Na Jičínsku v těchto týdnech přibývá policejních kontrol na silnicích. Důvodem je především nárůst počtu řidičů pod vlivem alkoholu a drog. Těch už je v tuto dobu podstatně více než za stejné období minulého roku.

Pokud se v těchto dnech vydáte na hrad Pecka na Jičínsku, měli byste být při jeho obcházení pozorní. Jižní stranu zakrylo lešení, stavbaři tu totiž dávají do pořádku a rekonstruují omítku, která opadává a na řadě míst vznikají praskliny. Instalace lešení byla náročná, protože se muselo stavět ve svahu.

The ongoing genocide in Gaza has been widely covered in the Canadian media. Yet the coverage has been shown to be unfair, misleading, and biased in favour of Israel. A 2023 analysis by The Breach of thousands of sentences in Canada's top newspapers found that the largest Canadian newspapers have given disproportionate attention to the deaths of Israelis, portrayed Israelis in more humanized ways and more often identified who was responsible for killing them. In response to this clear bias against Palestinians, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East set up their Media Accountability Project and has played an active role in challenging media bias about the situation in Gaza since then. We speak with Lynn Naji, media analyst at CJPME.

In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Peter Beinart speaks with Naji Abbas, Director of the Prisoners and Detainees Department for Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI), about Israel targeting medical workers in Gaza for arrest and detention inside of Israel, an effort that is part of the overall destruction of the infrastructure for community and life in Gaza. In Israeli detention, health care workers have been subjected to multiple methods of torture, including beatings, sexual abuse, the withholding of medical care and insufficient nutrition. Drawing on direct testimonies from detained medical workers, PHRI details this cruel and illegal treatment in their new report: Torture of Medical Workers in Israel - A Call for Urgent Action.  Naji Abbas is Director of the Prisoners and Detainees Department for Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI). He has been working and advocating for prisoners' rights in Israeli prisons for the past six years, with a focus on the right to healthcare in detention. His work has included providing individual assistance to hundreds of detainees and prisoners. Additionally, he has been involved in promoting policy changes regarding the healthcare system within Israeli prisons, including publishing position papers, engaging in legal work, giving lectures, and lobbying. Since the start of the war in October 2023, together with the PHRI team, Naji has worked extensively to expose the horrific conditions in which Palestinian political prisoners are being held in Israeli detention facilities. This includes publishing the first report (February 2024) which analysed the systematic violations of Palestinian human rights in Israeli prisons, as well as the first report that revealed to the world the atrocities at Sde Teman military camp (April 2024). Most recently, we published a report on the unlawful detention and torture of Palestinian medical workers in Israeli detention facilities. PHRI's work has also involved exposing numerous deaths of Palestinian prisoners. Peter Beinart is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Foundation for Middle East Peace. He is also a Professor of Journalism and Political Science at the City University of New York, a Contributing opinion writer at the New York Times, an Editor-at-Large at Jewish Currents, and an MSNBC Political Commentator. Tahrir Hamdi is a Professor of Resistance Literature at the Arab Open University in Jordan. She is the author of the award-winning Imagining Palestine and serves as an assistant editor of Arab Studies Quarterly. National identities are inherently fluid, shaped as much by collective beliefs and cultural practices as by official borders and territory. For Palestinians, whose national status remains contested, the articulation and imagination of national identity take on particular urgency. Imagining Palestine: Cultures of Exile and National Identity (Bloomsbury, 2022) examines how Palestinian intellectuals, artists, activists, and ordinary citizens envision their homeland, engaging with the works of key figures such as Edward Said, Ghassan Kanafani, Naji al-Ali, Mahmoud Darwish, Mourid Barghouti, Radwa Ashour, Suheir Hammad, and Susan Abulhawa. Drawing on decolonial and resistance concepts—particularly Palestinian sumud—Hamdi argues that the imaginative construction of Palestine is central to the Palestinian struggle. This interdisciplinary study, rooted in critical theory, postcolonial and decolonial studies, and literary analysis, offers valuable insights for students and scholars of Palestine, Middle East studies, and Arabic literature.
