Lon and Derek discuss the Illini's relatively flat home performance this season and the need to take care of Michigan in dominant fashion. Later, hear from Brad Underwood as he shares his thoughts following his team's late game failures against MSU and the game ahead vs the Wolverines.
We are back after taking a week off! This week Eddie is joined by Mike, Cleon & Alex Reiter. The guys briefly looked back on the NYCFC & Inter Miami matches & what could have been. It's all positive vibes from there as the boys highlight the dominant performance at home against Montreal, how the team is getting hot at the right time, what players could be key going into the final weeks, and even if OCB's early excite might offer a few younger players an opertunity with the first team as the season winds down. Mike then breaks down the playoff & CCC qualification scenarios with 3 matches left to play. Finally, shoutouts get out of hand as usual, including an unplanned meltdown from struggling fantasy football owner Cleon. Building HVAC Science - Building Performance, Science, Health & Comfort
If you weren't aware up to now, I am very passionate about Home Performance. So passionate, that I volunteer my time as a board member of, and now, Treasurer of the Building Performance Association or BPA. Among many other things, BPA runs a series of excellent trade shows call Home Performance Conferences (HPCs) (formerly called the Affordable Comfort Conference that started in the late 1980s). It was at a recent HPC that I heard several people remark that they were not clear on what exactly BPA was. To overcome this lack of clarity, I will be running an intermittent series to discuss BPA and its activities, as, frankly, more people ought to know about them and tap into their resources, especially HVAC Contractors. In today's episode I interview Steve Skodak, the CEO of BPA. Steve shares with us his history as a leader of non-profits, the history and activities of BPA, including helping to set policy, state and industry outreach, apprenticeship models, as well as the paid and free membership benefits for those interested in better understanding or doing work in the field of building performance. Listen closely and you will hear of the tie in between Steve's career and expanding foam. “Leadership is not about the next election, it’s about the next generation” -Simon Sinek 2020 was both a notable and challenging year in so many ways. Beyond everyone learning how to Zoom (and Zoom becoming a verb) the election of 2020 is sure to go down in history. What impact did the 2020 election have on RESNET's future-oriented mission to make the energy use for all homes transparent? (THIS EPISODE WAS RECORDED IN MID-DECEMBER 2020) In today’s podcast we are joined by Carl Chidlow, a registered federal lobbyist and Steve Baden, Executive Director of RESNET as they again pull out the crystal ball to discuss what changes may come about in the world of Home Performance as a result of the 2020 Elections. Carl and Steve help us understand the possibilities and probabilities of policy change that may happen with the slim majorities, negotiations and compromise we are likely to see. Learn how there may be possible bipartisan consensus with an infrastructure bill and the belief that much change will come about through executive order and regulations. We also discuss the implications of the recently passed extension of the 45L tax credit for builders. Steve also notes the two new proposals forwarded to the new Administration and Congress. Both proposals encourage the energy use calculation as a factor in mortgage approval process We discuss the cabinet nominees focus on a climate agenda and we learn about the potential impact that Gina McCarthy, the Energy Czar, can have on Home Performance. Carl also gives us his definition of Czar. Carl and Steve describe what they found most surprising as they think back to RESTALK Episode 57 (first aired in September 2020) where we discussed the upcoming election. Green Gab Podcast – Green Homes, Green Living and Green Companies
Today’s guest, Kellye Markowski, is a residential and commercial energy audit provider and project manager with Energy Smart Homes. Kellye works independently, which allows her to have an unbiased approach to finding out how to get a home to perform well. Kellye’s enthusiasm for helping clients and homeowners optimize the comfortability of their space, along with reducing costs, is genuine and powerful. She not only carries out a meticulous energy audit for each and every home but always delivers more than the client’s money’s worth. While every homeowner wants what’s best for their home and family, people often don’t know where to start, and that’s where Kellye comes in. Taking the Best Course of Action There are always multiple solutions to every problem. Kellye’s job is to help clients better understand and weight out the pros and cons to each method. Kellye’s go-to strategy consists of helping people recognize the benefits of each solution and what would make it a good option for their individual circumstances. With this in mind, clients are able to accurately weigh out options by acknowledging which strategy best reflects their needs. Reducing Energy Cost and Optimizing Comfort in your Home Often times, homes and commercial buildings are built with only one thing in mind; stability. Stability and protection from outside elements don’t ensure comfortability or optimal energy preservation, which is why having an energy audit prior to further construction is so necessary. Kellye has encountered a plethora of homes with inadequate insulation, uncapped holes, electric furnaces with misplaced ducts, and so much more. Her ability to find and solve large-scale problems hidden right under the noses of homeowners is unmatched. Kellye implements her expertise in a way that will help homeowners divert further discomfort. Without an energy audit, homeowners often result in dealing with unresolved and easily avoidable problems. Kellye finds ways to address issues relatively inexpensively and as seamlessly as possible. Understanding Construction for Energy Conservation People tend to gravitate towards the prettier, more glamorous aspects of a home – lighting, countertops, extravagant bathtubs. While the mechanics of a living space may be the least fun aspect of maintenance, it may easily be named the most important. No matter how pretty your home is, if you’re uncomfortable, you won’t be able to enjoy anything else. Homeowners typically aren’t well educated in how to tell if a house is built to perform well, which is why energy audits are important. Kellye’s experience as a construction estimator and large loss handler with an insurance company has qualified her with the expertise needed to properly evaluate a living space. Along with this, she has extensively submerged herself not only in her own education but as an educator. After 18 years as an art teacher, she transitioned to use the skills she acquired in creative thinking to support her passion for conserving and energy efficiency. Assumptions Home Owners Make when Buying Just as people often assume products are sustainable, people often make the same assumptions when purchasing a home. After all, why would people build something defective? Well, the truth is that homes are often built simply for protection, and little thought of comfortability is applied to the building process. Kellye’s comprehensive knowledge of building functionality is applied when auditing each and every home. She helps clients understand what is needed for their home in order to integrate the necessary elements to improve their level of satisfaction. Approaching Clients with Attainable Solutions Kellye is able to achieve her goal to optimize comfortability by communicating with clients in a way that is easy to understand. Kellye has found that the number one reason clients work with her is due to her comprehensive communication skills. She is very articulate and thorough when it comes to her evaluating and conversational methods. There is an array of resources available to individuals looking to improve and optimize their homes. What Kellye has to offer promises stability, comfortability, and long-term satisfaction. The benefits of a home audit are endless and guarantee to bring great value to each and every client. Links AeroBarrier – breakthrough envelope sealing technology, offers a revolutionary air-sealing solution that solves the problem of homes that leak. Air leaks are a major factor in homes that may not be comfortable or perform well. AeroBarrier stops the leaks for improved comfort, health, and safety for the people living in the home. The #1 reason people call Kellye is high utility bills and lack of comfort. When people see Kellye do an audit, they see the benefit of the audit before she even reviews the audit report with them. The report gives the actions that can be taken to address the issues found. And it is the actions that make the difference. The great reactions and ad hoc testimonials she receives attribute to her passion for her work and helping homeowners live better in their homes. She knows how to use her tools and talents to discover the “smoking gun” and gets a charge out of being able to find the culprit and get it fixed. You can reach Kellye at Kellye@EnergySmartHomes.us. Building HVAC Science - Building Performance, Science, Health & Comfort
“True genius lies not in doing the extraordinary things, but in doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.” General Louis H. Wilson, Jr. Building science principles are few and fairly straightforward; ordinary, perhaps. HAM: A lot of it amounts to control the flow of Heat, Air and Moisture. But, like so many things in this world, the devil is in the details. Listen in as I chat with my good friend Nate Adams (a true genius) to get an update on his extraordinarily execution of ordinary measures in his new concept of Home Performance 2.0. This is a follow up to Episode 36, where I interview two of the HP 2.0 practitioners, Neil Comparetto and Michael Housh. Measurements (so near and dear to my heart) are at the core of what he and his HP 2.0 army are all about. For a more complete overview, tune in to a recording of his recent webinar on HP 2.0: www.bit.ly/NATE-HP20 Nate’s book, The Home Comfort Book, is perfect for consumers or practitioners alike and can be found at TruTech Tools or on Amazon. You can reach Nate at Nate@EnergySmartOhio.com.
Duane Knickerbocker and Bill Small dig into the local community scene with a conversation on the Public Safety Power Shutoffs and how that message is being disseminated in the community. This is a great and necessary outreach to keep homeowners aware of what they can do for prevention first, then power second. Generators, batteries, solar are all topics of the discussion. Those necessities, or bare essentials are individual to each consumer. The consensus is that a PSPS could be, on average, two to three days. Very important if you’re one of the families affected. I’ll bet you didn’t know why SMUD might be different than PG&E with regard to Public Service Power Shutoffs. Michael Corbett tells the story. The conversation then drives straight into time of use billing and how you should actually save on the program and how it’s going to benefit in Winter with little to slight impact in the Summer if you pay attention to the peak hours. The discussion continues with Michael Corbett talking more about why utilities give rebates to use less of the service. You’ll even hear about a big decision you’ll have to make when you purchase your electric vehicle. It has to do with saving money so you’ll want to hear it. Now, about those rebates…why. Start with carbon and emissions reduction. Environmental Stewardship is critical and knowing demand will likely continue to grow, managing it today preserves the future and in the long run, reduces cost to the consumer. This allows each customer to make choices to meet their specific needs to their best advantage. Electrification will be more and more significant in the future and now is the time to get educated. The case study here is one that literally took advantage of every energy upgrade and rebate available including solar. It’s a compelling story that starts with a solar only option to reduce the expense. You’ll hear how this turned out to be a terrible option. Then, after a home performance evaluation, the steps were taken to completely upgrade the home. The outcome is nothing short of remarkable. Originally bid at 45 solar panels, after all the upgrades were complete, the final solar panel count was 16! 29 panels less mean roughly $30,000! And that does not include all the rebates! If this makes sense to you, and you want to get that same evaluation and potential savings, you have to give Brower Mechanical a call at 916-624-0808. On-line @ www.browermechanical.com.

Corbett Lunsford, wasn't a home performance expert- he used to play piano for ballerinas. In 2008, he learned a few things very quickly: construction is unbelievably messy, most pros are over-rushed and under-paid, and homeowners end up suffering in small ways, for their entire lives in a house. None of this has to be so- we can opt out of the whole thing with performance testing. His goal is to package building performance so it can easily be understood and used by professionals and consumers alike, for better buildings worldwide. In 2009, he started teaching pros through the Building Performance Workshop and he has hosted over 300 YouTube videos and 80 interviews for the Building Performance Podcast. He also wrote the book Home Performance Diagnostics: the Guide to Advanced Testing, and developed the APT Reports software tool. In 2016 he and his wife Grace built the world's highest performance tiny house on wheels, the #TinyLab, and toured the US before settling down in Atlanta, Georgia. Along the way, they created the first TV series about home performance, Home Diagnosis, which airs on public TV across the U.S. Corbett, Grace, and their new baby went on a 13,000 mile, 34-city U.S. Tour from April 2016-January 2017 in the world's highest performance tiny house on wheels, the #TinyLab. Their mission was simple: to revolutionize the home market by teaching consumers and contractors alike to use scientific testing to prove the work gets done to quality standards. Each city on the Proof Is Possible Tour was sponsored by a local company that shared the passion for empowering homeowners and changing the game. Along the way certain cities shared in filming of the couple's TV show Home Diagnosis. They invited over 7,000 strangers into their home on the tour, and now live in Atlanta, Georgia.

Building HVAC Science - Building Performance, Science, Health & Comfort
Today we turn the tables and your host becomes the guest! As you may or may not know Marilyn and I are building a new high-performance home this year (2019). Even though I have been involved in home performance for 30 years, it was in the narrow field of test and measurement, not in construction detail and aspects. And because it is our home and our money, everything about it is personal and I have a real hunger for the details which tends to complicate decisions! So, I asked my thoughtful pal, Nate Adams to pitch some questions at me to get me to talk about the subject and share our journey up to this point. We were calling it a high-performance house, but recently I’ve changed that to a new concept (in my mind): personalized performance – it’s what we want our home to be. I hope you enjoy the listen. Some of our listeners have likely heard of the term Home Performance. But have you heard of Home Performance 2.0? Michael Housh and Neil Comparetto join us to describe how they are helping to develop this new approach to serving customers with total home performance. This is a systems being developed by Nate Adams and Ted Kidd. They describe a well performing home as one that is healthy, comfortable, safe, durable and, as a side benefit, uses less energy. Michael and Neil are both trained and experienced HVAC technicians; mechanics in their own words. They discuss how some simple changes in the approach to the way technical work is presented is resulting in better business and happier clients. They describe the HP 2.0 process as consisting of 6 steps: client education, initial PAID consult, a comprehensive planning process, executing the project, QC, and continuous optimization with monitoring. A large part of the client education consists of the resources available at www.NateTheHouseWhisperer.com – there you will find an inexpensive book that educates consumers (and techs!) on home performance, as well as 2 free downloads(chapters from the book) to share with Clients: Home Comfort 101 and HVAC 101. These steps help to remove the pain of being a residential HVAC business owner: (Much of this is based on the Sandler Selling Process) Avoid fights over stuff you can’t fix More Happy Clients - Actually SOLVE client problems, no band aids Smooth out monthly sales with large HP projects in off seasons Onboard Staff Faster-with something else for apprentices to do Fewer Unhappy Clients Reduce Mold Risk Reduce Boredom with Challenging projects and new twists all the time Reduce or eliminate free quotes Increase Ticket Sizes w/o Home Performance Jobs Lower sales and marketing costs, with better word of mouth and paid consultations. Bigger, more satisfying jobs vs Small jobs with lots of up-front work that often don’t solve problems If you want to learn more you can reach Michael at MHoush@HoushHomeEnergy.com and Neil at Neil@ComparettoComfort.com or Nate Adams and Ted Kidd at Nate@EnergySmartOhio.com

How can an IOT (internet of things) based device help home dwellers and home performance contractors? Listen as our guest Jacques Touillon, inventor of the foobot describes what got him started on the journey from a concept to a successful product sold around the world. Jacques’ describes his vision of a future homes that has “invisible” sensors control systems to maintain superb indoor air quality. We discuss the importance of data and data processing, as well as recent environmental events (the wild fires in the Western United States) which shape the continuing development of this product He tells of Home Performance and HVAC contractors using the foobot and similar products to diagnose and solve home owner problems related to indoor air quality and comfort.
Today on IAQ Radio we welcome "Nate the House Whisperer" Adams. Nate is the founder of Energy Smart Home Performance outside Cleveland Ohio. Today we conclude our 3 part series "The Evolving World of Home Performance". This week we will focus on Building Science, IAQ & Insulation. Much or what we will discuss today comes from Nate's excellent book, The Home Comfort Book; The ultimate guide to creating a comfortable, healthy, efficient and long-lasting home. Nate is knowledgeable, entertaining and always eager to share his ideas and unique perspective on home performance. Nate Adams, Cleveland, Ohio based company Energy Smart started out as an insulation contractor for existing homes and evolved into doing Comprehensive Home Performance retrofits. These projects are somewhere between a simple attic insulation job and a deep energy retrofit. These projects are sweeping in scope with thorough planning process and careful attention paid to what problems the client wants to solve, what the house needs, and what fits within the homeowner budget. No two projects are alike. Through substantial air tightness and insulation upgrades, and sometimes HVAC replacement, homes are made far more comfortable.

Blake Reid shares with us the challenges and rewards of doing home performance work in Hawaii which has the most expensive energy, 12 climate zones, no energy code, an active volcano, and an aggressive state climate goal. As a knowledgeable, ethical and honest “wiz kid” contractor, Blake made a huge decision and moved his family from Ithaca, NY to Hawaii to “set up shop” as a home performance contractor. Listen to Blake describe some of his motivations to move as well as why he choose the name www.TerraWattHome.com for his company. Blake shares many of his business techniques which meld with his personal philosophies and encourages all contactors not to “get stuck”. Listeners are encouraged to go to his website and read his blog posts, and if interested, fill out a contact request to get in touch with Blake.

This week on IAQ Radio+ we look forward to a great discussion on better ways to build and an industry update. Tedd Benson of Bensonwood and Unity Homes and Bob Krell of Healthy Indoors Magazine are our guests this week. Tedd Benson the founder of Bensonwood (1973) and Unity Homes (2012), has devoted his life to developing a better way to build. A key figure in the revival of timber framing in America, he was one of the founders of the Timber Framers Guild of North America (1984) and authored four books on the subject. Through the decades, Bensonwood established itself as a creative leader in timber frame design, engineering, craftsmanship, and CAD-CAM technology. This work has taken the company to nearly every state in the U.S. (Oklahoma is a holdout), as well as Canada, England and Japan. Today, Bensonwood continues that leadership, pioneering the use of Mass Timber and Cross Laminated Timber's CLT's in buildings large and small. After having spent many years with the Bensonwood team developing processes, systems, logistics, and technology, Tedd went on to found Unity Homes, now a sister company, with the objective to make high performance homes affordable and normal. Tedd is a nationally known speaker and presenter and is the recipient of many awards, including an honorary doctorate from Unity College, and most recently, The Granite State Award in recognition of his statewide and national influence on best building practices. Tedd will give us a look at his vision of the future and how his company is part of that future right now! Bob Krell of Healthy Indoor Magazine will also join us to talk about the state of the IAQ, restoration and home performance from his perspective. He is just returning from the Home Performance Conference this week in Philadelphia and he goes to just about every conference relevant to IAQ and Home Performance across the country. We will talk to Bob about where we are and prognosticate about where we are headed. Bob is also preparing for an ambitious first in the industry when his group will be simulcasting the Maine IAQ and Energy Expo May 1-2, 2018 in Portland, Maine.
Today on IAQ Radio+ we welcome Nate Adams for Part 2 on the Evolving World of Home Performance. This week we will focus on the HVAC system and how it fits into home comfort. In Part 1 we discussed how what was once called an energy audit is now evolving into something different. The energy programs are changing and the people that perform/ed energy audits are changing how they market their services and what they provide. Some have gone into healthy housing others are pitching home performance and much more comprehensive and costly changes to existing homes. Nate has a unique perspective on the topic and has released the first edition of his book, “The Home Comfort Book” on the topic. We will go into depth on how HVAC systems affect comfort. There may be things that you disagree with but Nate has done the numbers on his project and is confident in his process.

This week on IAQ Radio one of the modern day pioneers of the Home Performance industry Mr. Nate Adams joins us for the hour. Nate started out in outside sales for a fiberglass insulation manufacturer. He then started a retrofit insulation contracting business in 2009, Energy Smart Insulation, earning the Department of Energy's Century Club award in 2012, one of only 97 contractors nationwide. Nate grew frustrated with the fact that all too often he was not truly solving the problems he was called to solve and the unsustainable treadmill of small, unfulfilling jobs that is typically the life of an insulation contractor. Searching for a better way, Nate has spent the last two years developing and honing a sales process to sell the large, complicated Home Performance jobs typically required to solve homeowner problems at their root. These jobs typically involve air sealing, insulation, and new HVAC equipment and often result in large IAQ improvements. Average job size has risen from $2500 to over $15,000 with much higher client satisfaction and personal job fulfillment. Nate blogged throughout this painful transition on the Energy Smart Blog and his work was picked up by the Journal of Light Construction where he frequently writes the Energy column, GreenTech Media, Green Building Advisor, Energy Vanguard, and more. He has spoken at industry conferences, most recently about using energy modeling to sell larger jobs. The focus on results has also lead Nate to focus on measurement, and he has found that energy savings are predictable in these projects. These energy savings are a good proxy for a successful job and a happy client. It could also lead to a larger market and unlocking large scale financing. This discovery has lead Nate to advocate for measured results in the Home Performance industry via the One Knob blog. Nate would like to see the Home Performance industry finally fulfill its promise to make the nation's homes healthier, more comfortable, longer lasting, and less expensive to operate while providing fulfilling, high paying jobs and leaving a better world for our children.
