Why is screenwriting so difficult, even for the smartest people? John and Craig look at the relationship between intelligence and wisdom, the kinds of problems writers attempt to solve, and the unmeasurable skills that screenwriters need to succeed. Then it's another round of the Three Page Challenge, where they give their honest feedback on three listener-submitted scripts. We also follow up on Moneyball, green envelopes, shorts, script coordinating, and what Craig means by writers being “calculating.” In our bonus segment for premium members, how do you talk about movies and TV shows without spoiling them? Damion Poitier is an American actor and stuntman, best known for his role as Chains in Payday 2. He made an uncredited appearance as Thanos in The Avengers, the character's first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has also had roles in Captain America: Civil War, Star Trek, Jarhead, and Never Die Alone. Poitier played Cenrari 7 in one of my personal favorite movies “Hunter Prey” along with his breakout role as GoldFace on the hit CW television series, “The flash.”

When COVID-19 hit in early 2020, hospitals restricted family members access to their loved ones' rooms. Without the comfort of an advocate or the desperately needed human touch at their bedside, many patients become more sick or die. On today's edition of Family Talk, Steve Reiter continues to share the heartbreaking story of his wife, Elizabeth, who died alone in her hospital room during the pandemic. Thanks to Steve's organization, ten states are moving toward a reasonable accommodation for a loved one to be allowed in the room around the clock through Never Die Alone bills. "Isabel Sarli squeezes more sexual frisson into the space between breathing in and breathing out than most of us could spread over a lifetime of ordinary love-making." -New York TimesDjango Nudo welcomes the Smut Peddler and this week's guest Adrián García Bogliano, and then leaves for a well-deserved birthday vacation!Smut and Adrián have an in-depth conversation about the week's theme: the king and queen of Argentinian sexploitation cinema – Armando Bó and Isabel Sarli. Their film "Fuego" (1969) was a major influence for John Waters (especially Pink Flamingos, 1972), which he talks about here. The Mexican-Argentinian film director Adrián García Bogliano knows a thing or two about Sarli/Bó and about the modern history of Argentina, as his parent escaped the military junta in the country for Spain, where Adrián was born. He then grew up in Argentina, when the country got a democratic government, and in his youth, he was fascinated by the goddess Isabel Sarli. She was the former Miss Argentina (1955), met the director Armando Bó, who cast her in her first film in 1957, "Thunder in the Leaves", which contains Argentina's first frontal nudity in a film. They became lovers (while he was still married) and made 27 amazing erotic melodramas or comedies together, until his death in 1984. She only did two films with other directors. Cultpix shows: "The Female" (1962/1968). The film was exported to the USA, where it was dubbed, re-cut, and got new sex scenes. This week's theme has 10 films by Bó, starring Sarli. Adrián discusses some of her most famous films like "Carne" (1968) and "The Naked Temptation" (1966) which was a major inspiration for his own "I'll Never Die Alone" (2008), as well the couple's venture into a kind of horror film "Bewitched" (1976).Adrián explains about the Bó family, where Armando's son Victor starred against Isabel, and had sex scenes with her, while his dad was still married to Victor's mom. Victor's son, Armando Jr, is in turn an Oscar-winning screenwriter in Hollywood today. They also discuss the films in relationship to the dictatorship of the country. Isabel had met with President Perón, and the clothes designer in her films also dressed Eva Perón. So, there were mixed emotions about Armando Bó's films, both from the leadership and from the audience.Adrián has theories of why the voluptuous Isabel never made it abroad (like stars like Sophia Loren or Brigitte Bardot), one being that she only worked with Armando Bó as a director, not for the lack of offers, even from abroad.Their career is also interesting, as the films changed with the times; where she in the 60's was mainly a victim in the films, being abused and/or raped, in the later films her characters were much more empowered, taking charge of their lives. The other films in the theme week are: "Heat" (1960), "The Hot Days" (1966), "Nude in the Sand" (1969), "Tropical Ecstasy" (1970) and "The Insatiable Widow" (1976).Thank you, Adrián, for all your great insights, stories and analysis of this amazing phenomenon.
Dakota and I break down his third movie choice of the month.
This is an expose of a bunch of illegal and unsavory acts happening between a handful of characters. Goines, famous for his urban fiction contribution, delivers another gritty portrayal of street life during the 60's/70's. The character arcs are flat yet effective, proving nuance isn't always necessary. This short read was adapted into a film starring the greats, DMX, Michael Ealy & Clifton Powell. Check out this review for a breakdown on this masterpiece. We discuss 5 of his performances: his debut, the influential hip hop classic Belly (1998), his trilogy of dumb studio action films by the overqualified cinematographer turned director Andrzej Bartkowiak - Romeo Must Die (2000), Exit Wounds (2001) and Cradle 2 The Grave (2003), and his most ambitious film, Ernest Dickerson's misunderstood crime drama Never Die Alone (2004). DMX discovered the source material by the Black pulp fiction novelist Donald Goines when he was in prison and used his clout in Hollywood to get it made as a movie: a disturbing and often grimly effective potboiler about how a sociopath's mind operates. We also discuss our shared neighbourhood of Bloordale: a magical land of bodegas, ice cream shops and numerous weed dispensaries. In Part 2 of our interview, we continue our conversation with cinematographer Matty Libatique. After Pi, Matty couldn't believe that such a small movie shot on 16mm black and white film opened so many doors for him. He began to get calls for large Hollywood movies, such as Tigerland with director Joel Schumacher. Schumacher, known for big-budget, glossy films like Batman and Robin, was looking for a new look for the gritty Vietnam training camp film, starring an up and coming Colin Farrell. Matty and Schumacher decided to shoot hand-held 16 mm for Tigerland so that it would amplify the anger, stress and pain of preparing for war. Spike Lee's film Do The Right Thing influenced Matty's path to a career in cinema, and he had the honor to work with Lee on four films, including Inside Man. Matty found Lee's approach to film to be incredibly unique. Lee would decide scenes with multiple cameras could become one camera done in one shot, or plan that a single camera scene should be done with multiple cameras and angles. Matty thinks that as a DP you are a collaborator and need to be present as a fellow filmmaker and not as a fanboy, so he resisted telling Lee that Do The Right Thing was the reason why he went into film. Matty also got the chance to work with another hero of his, director and cinematographer Ernest Dickerson, who shot Do The Right Thing, on the film Never Die Alone. Matty teamed up again with director Darren Aronofsky on The Fountain, an incredibly surreal sci-fi love story that takes place across space and time. It was a big challenge for Matty to bring Aronofsky's vision of The Fountain to life, bouncing ideas off Aronofsky's astrophysicist collaborator, who described what other universes might look like. By contrast, their next movie together, Black Swan, was a stripped down thriller, focused on taught performances and choreography. Black Swan earned Matty his first Academy Award nomination for cinematography. Surprisingly, working on the first Iron Man movie felt to Matty just like working on a giant independent film. With a comedic star like Robert Downey Jr. and an experienced comedic director like Jon Favereau, the two often reworked the script before shooting scenes. Matty had never worked on a project with such a large budget, and he helped create the look of the Marvel cinematic universe. When Matty heard Straight Outta Compton was in developement, he immediately asked his agent for a meeting with director F. Gary Gray, because he was such a big fan of the hip-hop group NWA. The film is about the origins of NWA's generation-defining album and the story of the band, but it was not a straightforward biopic, and Matty wanted to make sure the movie had the right look and feel for the era. For 2018's A Star is Born, starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, Matty and Cooper, who also directed the film, wanted to pay homage to the other two versions but Cooper's take on the story was definitely different. They decided to feature more musical performance in their version, and early into shooting, Cooper changed the ending so that the main character, Jackson Maine, doesn't die in a motorcycle accident. Matty found that Bradley Cooper has the ability to clearly explain what he sees in his imagination, and his acting experience enabled him to be aware of where the camera was positioned so he didn't have to watch playback of his scenes. Matty's film, The Prom, can be streamed on Netflix. He is currently shooting the film, Don't Worry Darling, directed by Olivia Wilde. Rapper DMX is hospitalized and on life support following heart attack, longtime lawyer says Updated 1:19 PM EDT April 4, 2021 Rapper DMX remains hospitalized and on life support in White Plains, New York, his longtime attorney Murray Richman confirmed to CNN on Sunday. The rapper suffered a heart attack Friday around 11 p.m. at his home in White Plains and was taken via ambulance to a local hospital, where he remains on a ventilator, Richman said. The attorney said he did not know what may have caused the heart attack. Richman said he has known DMX for 25 years and said Saturday evening that he has been in touch with the rapper's family all day. He said he is aware of the rapper's medical prognosis, but declined to comment on it. DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, burst on the rap scene in the late 1990s with songs including "Party Up" and "Get At Me Dog." His first five albums debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. The 50-year-old is also an actor, and IMDb lists more than 40 acting credits for him. His roles in "Romeo Must Die" -- which starred R&B star Aaliyah just before her death -- and "Never Die Alone" are among his most notable, and he often appeared as himself in films and TV shows. DMX has received three Grammy nominations, all of which came in either 2000 or 2001. Two were for Best Rap Solo Performance and the third was for Best Rap Album --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/oss2389/support
