For nearly 20 years, the City of Sierra Vista has displayed 53 Old World Santas in Veterans Memorial Park each holiday season. In this episode, we share some of the stories tied to these Santas, both the original ones made out of wood and paint, and the new ones on display today that were recreated to stand the test of time. Residents lobby officials for accessible parks Having a physical disability is a challenge. Having a physical disability, owning a dog and finding an accessible park presents an even greater challenge. Cali Gorevic, 80, who lives in Philipstown, has difficulty walking. She has two "country dogs" - a golden retriever and a German shepherd - that would benefit from running free and meeting other canines at the town's North Highlands Park on Route 9 at Glassbury Court. The problem, she said, is that the dog park is located more than 100 yards from the parking area. Fabiola Gomez, 62, a New Hamburg resident who suffers from post-polio syndrome, would also like to exercise her giant schnauzer at North Highlands Park. In addition to the distance from parking, she said the gravel and grass path leading to the park is unsuitable for the devices she uses to improve her mobility, such as forearm crutches or a wheelchair. Gomez and Gorevic each complained to the Town of Philipstown but said they were not satisfied by the response. Gorevic wrote Supervisor John Van Tassel in August to suggest two handicapped spaces adjacent to the dog park. Van Tassel responded that a lot isn't possible at that location because Glassbury Court's septic field lies beneath it. Van Tassel expanded on his response in an email to The Current on Wednesday (Oct. 2), writing that "due to terrain and other physical boundaries we cannot make the dog park fully accessible" and that the town had problems in the past when visitors were able to drive closer to the park and added a gate to prevent it. "I'm sympathetic to her wishes to be able to utilize the dog park; it's just not feasible for that area of the park to be handicap-accessible," Van Tassel wrote. Gomez said she contacted the town in June and also reached out to Disability Rights New York, a nonprofit that provides free legal and advocacy services to people with disabilities. In response, DRNY wrote to the Philipstown Recreation Department stating that the federal Americans with Disabilities Act "requires that services and programs provided by local governments be readily accessible to individuals with disabilities," although the ADA qualifies that requirement, saying that when full compliance is impractical because of terrain, "the service must be made accessible to the greatest extent that is structurally feasible." DRNY also noted that the ADA requires public facilities, including dog parks, to provide accessible parking and a "stable, firm, level and slip-resistant" path that is the shortest accessible route to the dog park. Van Tassel said he would ask the town attorney for a legal opinion. Marilynn Glasser, the president of Dog Park Concept and Consulting in Patterson and author of Dog Park Design, Development and Operation, has worked with dozens of communities across the U.S. She said the ADA "absolutely" applies to municipal dog parks but municipalities, especially in the Northeast, often create parks with little or no thought to making them accessible. She noted that while "a disabled person needs to be able to get inside a dog park," they don't necessarily need access to the entire area where dogs are free to run. She said a path to a park should be wheelchair-friendly and that long paths are also more difficult for people on crutches. Shorter, easier paths also benefit people with heart conditions and other health issues, she said. The lack of accessibility at North Highlands Park is not unusual. A survey of local municipalities found no ADA-compliant dog parks in Peekskill, Kent, Fishkill, Putnam Valley or Nelsonville. County parks in Westchester and Dutchess also lack facilities. In Putnam County, Chris Ruthven, the director of parks and recreation, said a dog park being developed with Guardian Revival at Veterans Memorial Park in Carmel will be ADA-compliant. In Beacon, Friends of Beacon Dog Park operates its facility at Memorial Park. While parking is nearby, the site is not fully ADA-com...

All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Beloved Marietta Middle School Teacher Dies Marietta Middle School is mourning the loss of 25-year-old computer science teacher Jason Ogbomoh, who passed away. Principal Diona Brown conveyed the news in an email to families, describing Ogbomoh as a beloved teacher who had taught at the school for two years. Brown highlighted his passion for teaching, commitment to students, and significant impact on the community. Ogbomoh's students regarded him as a mentor and role model. The school is providing counseling and support for students and staff during this difficult time, and Brown encouraged open communication with students about their feelings. STORY 2: Wellstar Kennestone Employee Honored for Saving Man's Life Samiya Seid, an environmental services worker at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, received one of Cintas Corporation's CAPE Awards for saving a man's life during a heart attack. Seid, among the 10 national winners, encountered a distressed woman who led her to a man experiencing a heart attack. Seid promptly contacted the hospital's rapid response team and provided emotional support to the woman while assisting the man. Despite the seriousness of the situation, Seid remained calm and focused. Her actions were credited with helping save the man's life. As part of the honor, Seid's name was displayed on the Nasdaq tower, and she received a monetary award, a plaque, and a housecleaning bucket from Cintas. STORY 3: Planning Commission OKs 91-Home Development Off Sandy Plains Rd. The Cobb Planning Commission approved a 91-home development near Kincaid Elementary School, off Sandy Plains Road, in a 4-1 vote. The 19.5-acre property was originally proposed for 105 units, but the plan was scaled down to address concerns from residents. The development, by Toll Southeast Limited Partnership Company, will feature single-family homes ranging from 2,200 to 3,800 square feet, with an estimated price range of $600,000 to $700,000. The approved rezoning allows for five units per acre. Some residents raised environmental and traffic concerns, with assurances from county staff that a hydrology study would address environmental issues, and a request for a new traffic study during the school session. The victim advocates' funding, traditionally from grants, is under threat due to a significant cut in the Victims of Crime Act grant from $1.2 million to $130,000. Broady is seeking the county's support to cover nine positions, stating that without county intervention, victims of crime would be deprived of the services they deserve under Georgia Law. Broady is also seeking approval for three new positions at the Cobb Family Advocacy Center. STORY 5: Acworth Celebrates Veterans Day The city of Acworth's annual Veterans Day celebration, initially planned at Veterans Memorial Park, was relocated to the Acworth Community Center due to rain. Veterans from the U.S. Armed Forces were honored, with paving bricks dedicated to some veterans, to be displayed at Veterans Memorial Park. Dignitaries, including Acworth Mayor Tommy Allegood and state Sen. Ed Setzler, attended the event. Pastor Michael Smith highlighted the significance of Veterans Day, acknowledging the sacrifices and lasting memories of disabled American veterans. The ceremony included musical performances by the Academy Singers from North Cobb Christian School, celebrating veterans' service. We'll be back in a moment Break: DRAKE – INGLES 3 STORY 6: Caffeine and Octane Brings Monthly Car Show to Town Center Caffeine and Octane's monthly car show took place at Town Center mall, attracting car enthusiasts with diverse vehicle displays. The event, held since 2006, showcased various makes and models, welcoming antique and work-in-progress vehicles. Town Center's spacious location accommodated the growing event, drawing hundreds of guests. Participants shared stories about their vehicles, including notable finds and customizations. One standout was Hailey Rose's 1999 custom-made hearse, serving as her daily driver and uniquely combining front and back halves. Collectors like Ray Beaupre displayed their cherished cars, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere at the show. STORY 7: Smyrna's New Green Space Awarded Smyrna's new downtown green space received the Medium-Sized Redevelopment of the Year award at the 2023 Metro Atlanta Redevelopment Summit. Mayor Derek Norton expressed pride in the project, highlighting extensive citizen input in its development. The $6.5 million project, funded by the 2022 special-purpose local-option sales tax, replaced an outdated traffic circle and fountain. The transformed space has become a popular gathering spot, featuring activities like morning yoga, afternoon games, and evening relaxation. Described as a special place contributing to community well-being, the green space reflects Smyrna's commitment to enhancing its downtown area and fostering community engagement. In our final episode of 2021, podcast host and City Public Information Officer Adam Curtis is joined by Parks, Leisure, and Library Director Laura Wilson and Sierra Vista Area Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Officer Melany Edwards-Barton. Together we talk about how the City and Chamber are partnering to combine two of Sierra Vista's favorite holiday traditions: The City's Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Chamber's annual Christmas Light Parade. The City's tree lighting has been expanded into a two-day festivity with children's activities and a holiday market on Friday, December 3, and Saturday, December 4. That has enabled the City to partner with the Sierra Vista Area Chamber of Commerce on its annual Christmas Light Parade, which will now feature a new route running around Veterans Memorial Park on the evening of Saturday, December 4. The Kiwanis Club of Sierra Vista has partnered with the City too by donating a large Christmas tree that will serve as the centerpiece of the newly expanded event. HIGHLIGTS Intro 00:10 Hi Laura and Melany, welcome to the podcast! (01:25) So Melany, let's start with the parade. Newcomers to Sierra Vista may not know much about its history. Remind us just how long the parade has been a part of our holiday traditions here in Sierra Vista and how it's changed over the years. (01:31) What's the theme for this year's parade and how do people participate? (03:49) Laura can you describe the City's tree lighting event and how it is being expanded this year? What do we hope to grow it into as time goes on? (04:32) How partnerships tie into this effort. What we seek to accomplish by bringing in community partners like the Kiwanis Club of Sierra Vista and the Sierra Vista Area Chamber of Commerce. Melany, what was your reaction to the City's vision for this event and how do you hope the parade complements these efforts? (12:13) The Chamber has some other long-running holiday traditions, plus a new one that began during COVID last year and is continuing this year. Can you tell us a little bit about these other activities and how folks can learn more? (17:47) We wrap up sharing what we each love most about the holiday season in Sierra Vista. (23:50) Outro (32:39)

Lucas and Patti welcome Harvey Mayhill to Palmetto Mornings.
Good morning, it's Thursday, May 13th and this is The Herald Review's podcast, the Daily Chirp. We're excited to bring you a closer look at top stories, events in the community, local history, sports, and more. Today - It's been almost two weeks since the Arizona National Guard landed in Cochise County to help the Sheriff's Office on the border. So, how's it going so far? Before we begin, some local history. Did you know that from 1913 to 1933, Fort Huachuca was the home of the Buffalo Soldiers of the 10th Cavalry Regiment? Formed as a segregated African-American military unit, it served during the Indian Wars in the West, the Spanish-American War in Cuba, and the Philippine American War before being relocated to the Fort in 1913 because of increasing border tensions with Mexico. Today, the 10th Cavalry are known as Buffalo soldiers and proudly use a buffalo symbol to commemorate their heritage.. Today's history is brought to you by Benson Hospital. The team at Benson Hospital is always working towards building a healthier community. For example, when the Benson Food Pantry needed a new home, they worked with them to find one, and their staff even helped them apply for grants to support the mission. You can learn more about everything they're doing for our community by following them on Facebook at facebook.com/bensonhospital. Also, The Daily Chirp podcast is giving away 5 Amazon Echo Dots - one every month now through July. You can enter for your chance to win twice a day! Today's code is FROGS and find the other codeword in our “Daily Chirp Podcast Alert” e-newsletter. To enter the sweepstakes go to myheraldreview.com, again today's codeword is: FROGS Now, our feature story. It's been almost two weeks since the Arizona National Guard landed in Cochise County to help the Sheriff's Office on the border. With the number of illegal crossings spiking monthly, the assistance is needed more than ever. Sheriff's Chief of Staff Mark Napier said the National Guard's help with administrative duties, and especially with monitoring the Buckeye cameras that are placed along the international border, has helped deputies hit the ground and reinforce the manpower out in the field. But Napier also said the number of undocumented migrants who have been seen on the cameras attempting to cross into the region illegally has been “off the charts.” So where exactly are the cameras? The cameras are placed along the border from New Mexico through Arizona and into California. And between March and April alone, investigators monitoring the cameras have seen an additional 428 people attempting to cross over. In April specifically, the cameras caught images of 3,807 undocumented migrants attempting to cross over the border illegally. And in March, the cameras saw 3,379 people attempting to come in. Last year, the attempted illegal crossings were dramatically lower with 835 people in March and 350 in April. So help from the National Guard has been welcomed. Napier said that it's allowed them to use more enforcement resources. He also said that working with them has been going well. The 32 members of the Guard were sent by Gov. Doug Ducey at the end of April. The intent is that they'll help out in various non-law enforcement duties. The majority were assigned to the Sheriff's Southeast Arizona Border Region Enforcement team. Other National Guard members were assigned to help with administrative duties in the Sheriff's Willcox and Bisbee offices. And monitoring the cameras is a key function aimed at helping authorities hold back the number of illegal crossings into the area by undocumented migrants. This was all prompted by Governor Ducey's announcement earlier in April when he said that Arizona would take matters into its own hands regarding the onslaught of undocumented migrants pouring into the state. Ducey's statement came after the Arizona Department of Public Safety spotted 20 undocumented migrants in Chandler that same day, but were rebuffed by both the Border Patrol and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement when they asked for help. Those migrants were then released back into Chandler. The governor's law enforcement and military liaison, Megan Fitzgerald, said Ducey had asked the federal government for support in deploying the National Guard — known as Title 32 — but the support never materialized. So Ducey decided to declare an emergency along Arizona's four-border counties and deployed the National Guard under State Active Duty. One of the National Guard members deployed to Cochise County is Sgt. Jacqueline Schamahorn, a six-year veteran of the Guard. Schamahorn, who lives in Tucson, was assigned to help out with administrative duties at the Sheriff's Office in Willcox. She told us that it's been a good experience so far. In the morning she instantly gets started on paperwork. She helps with administrative tasks so the deputies can be out in the field. Schamahorn, who said the public's reaction to the National Guard has been welcoming, also told us that she was enthusiastic when the governor's order was issued. She was ready to help. Over the weekend Douglas had an unexpected visitor. It triggered a public response as local residents were curious as to what was going on. Sometime between 6 and 7 a.m. a relatively large brown bear was spotted in the alley between 11th and 12th Streets. Apparently it was spooked by all the unwanted attention. So it scurried up a utility pole where it stayed for a while. According to Mark Hart, public information officer for Arizona Game and Fish, the bear is believed to have been a male, weighing approximately 200 pounds and was an estimated 5-years old. Hart said paw prints indicate the bear had entered the area from the west. And as word began to quickly spread around Douglas that there was a bear downtown, a small crowd of residents flocked to the area. One resident even had a drone hoping to get a better view. The unwanted attention led the bear to descend down the poll and scurry down the alley toward 13th Street, where it found another utility pole to climb. It was there until officials from the Arizona Game and Fish Department arrived. Shortly after arriving, Game and Fish officials decided to shut down Pan American Avenue in both directions and allow the bear to come down the pole, cross Pan American and proceed toward Whitewater Draw where it is thought the bear came from in the first place. And in a short while the bear climbed down the pole, ran toward the desert with Game and Fish officials on its tail in an effort to push it deep inside the area. Mark your calendars, because the Sierra Vista Wine, Beer and Spirits Festival will be here before you know it. It's on May 29th starting at 12pm and going until 7pm. And for this year it's been reimagined to offer a more relaxing and comfortable day. So bring your own blanket and lawn chairs to set up under the shade trees in Veterans Memorial Park! Finally, today we're remembering the life of John Economy, long-time resident of Bisbee. John was born in Silvis, Illinois. The family moved to Bisbee when John was three years old. He was a first generation American of Greek — German descent and attended Bisbee schools until W.W.II. Before retirement he owned Economy Building Supply, a local hardware store and lumber yard and Economy Builders. He worked in many locations throughout Cochise County including Indian Hills Plaza in Sierra Vista and the San Jose and Mountain Ranch neighborhoods. John took pride in his workmanship and made many friends through his business endeavors. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and was involved in many civic activities during his life. John became a founding board member of the San Jose Fire District which has provided fire protection for a previously unserved area in Bisbee. A World War II Navy veteran, John was assigned to the U.S.S, Logan and made landings at Tinian, Saipan, and Iwo Jima. In February, 1945, under heavy Japanese bombardment, John piloted his landing craft taking troops and supplies onto the beaches of Iwo Jima. From the USS Logan's 23 landing craft, only John's craft remained intact when the bombing ceased. John is survived by his wife, his sons and daughter, his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and his sister and brothers in law. He will be greatly missed. The Sandwich Weekly Podcast Episode 5. Activities and events from Friday May 31 through Thursday June 13. Hello again and welcome to the Sandwich Weekly Podcast. This is Episode 5, covering activities and events in and around Sandwich for the period Friday May 31 through Thursday June 13. Before I begin, I would like to thank all the listeners who have taken the time to visit and like the podcasts Facebook page and those who have sent some wonderful comments. Remember that this podcast is for you and if you have any suggestions for improvement, please send them to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com. A special thanks to Geoff Penman who corrected the historical tidbit from last weeks episode. If you remember, I said that Davis Lake extended from Veterans Memorial Park to, what is now, Gletty Road. I didn’t believe that was possible since the buildings on Main Street existed prior to Davis lake being drained. I mistakenly thought that the Park referred to Veterans Park which is across from City Hall. Actually the lake extended from Sandwich Memorial Park to Gletty Road. Sandwich Memorial Park lies west of the YMCA and has an entrance on Water Street. This weeks tidbit of Sandwich history is about what once was an old train car and is now the Bull Moose Bar and Grille. The train car is a former Pullman Palace car that was built in 1893, at a cost of $25,000, and initially shown at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago later that year. It was placed into service by the Burlington (now the Burlington Northern Sante Fe) railroad and was part of their special “Pride of Burlington” train. In 1904, the train car was given to President Teddy Roosevelt to use during his presidential campaign and returned to the Burlington railway after Roosevelt was elected. The train car was put back into use for another presidential election in 1908 as William Howard Taft’s official transportation carriage. Taft won the election. During the next election, Roosevelt ran on his own Progressive Party (or “Bull Moose” Party) ticket Figuring the train car was good luck since it was used by the last two winners of Presidential elections, he got the car from the Burlington railway and used it to criss-cross the country during his campaign. Well, Teddy Roosevelt lost that election to Woodrow Wilson and the train car was returned to the railroad. The train car continued on the Burlington line until it was retired in the early 1930’s. In 1934, Sandwich resident Henry Tattersal bought the train car for $75 dollars and moved it from California to Sandwich, placing it on the southwest corner of Main and Church Streets. He redesigned the train car as a diner and opened it later that year and called it “The Diner”. In 1935, a man by the name of Wright bought the diner and moved it across the street to its present day location next to a house and renamed it “Wright’s Diner”. The train car diner has gone through a number of owners and name changes over the years, eventually incorporating the house into part of the restaurant It has been known as Paul’s Diner, Cucina Plata, Kelly’s Pub and the American Grill. The diner closed in 2008 and sat vacant for a couple years. That’s when Ron and Sue came into the picture. Ron and Sue bought the train car and house and painstakingly restored the inside building and car, as well as spruced up the outside that had deteriorated over time. Having had an antique business for over 25 years, Sue Saballus used her antique connections to find lighting fixtures and decorations to restore the train car to its original splendor when Teddy Roosevelt used it a century before. They even restored the original leaded glass windows along the top of the railcar. The family opened their restaurant in 2010 choosing the Bull Moose Bar and Grille name as a nod to the historical significance of the rail car. The Sandwich Weekly podcast, covering local activities and events for the period May 24th through June 6th. Here’s a little tidbit of Sandwich history thanks another podcast listener. Did you know that there once was a lake, Lake Davis, which stretched from Veterans Memorial Park to what is now Gletty Road. The lake covered approximately 100 acres, but was drained in 1912–1913 by installing tiles routing the water east to the Little Rock Creek. This was possible because Sandwich was built on a natural gradation due to a geological fault line known as the Sandwich Fault, so the city stands on a hillside. The southeast corner of the city is the lowest spot, roughly near the Harvey Creek Preserve, as well as near Little Rock Creek. It was drained because it was considered a “dead” lake. The lake didn’t have a sand beach, but was used for boating, fishing, swimming, hunting, and trapping. If you have some little-known history about Sandwich, send it to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com. I’ll read it on a future podcast and give you full bragging rights. I have some good news, you may remember in episode one that I made a reference to chapters. Well, through lots of trial and error, I was able to get chapters implemented. If your podcast player supports chapters you can now jump directly to any day in the audio file by selecting that day in the chapters list. Two excellent podcast players that support chapters are Overcast for Apple devices, and Pocket Casts for both Apple and Android devices.
