When he was 7 years old, a friend's father was in the entertainment business. Hanging out at rehearsals and on the tour buses sold Matt on the idea of being a musician, or at the very least, a drummer. All this lead to spending his high school years at Fort Hayes vocational school for music and Capital University Conservatory of Music for college studying under drum instructor Bob Breithaupt. The musical diversity in Columbus gave Matt the chance to play with many great players and learning many different styles – from Big Band (Vaughn Weister's Famous Jazz Orchestra) and Brazilian to Afro-Cuban and Fusion. All the while, he was doing his share of gigs with original rock bands and top 40 bands. Matt moved to Nashville in the summer of 1999. Working as a freelance drummer based in Nashville has taken him to all 50 states in the U.S. and most of Canada, as well as overseas to Europe, Asia, The Middle East and The Caribbean. As well as the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Matt has performed in great local venues like the Ryman Auditorium, Mercy Lounge, 3rd and Lindsley, The 5 Spot, The Sutler, The Basement, The Wildhorse Saloon, and many clubs on lower Broadway. Matt has toured both regionally and nationally, with the Adam and Shannon Wright, Mark Selby, Eddy Raven, Billy Dean, Stephen Simmons, Three Lane, Whiskey Cash & Roses, Michelle Wright - (throughout Canada), Julie Roberts, and The Frontmen of Country which is Larry Stewart of Restless Heart, Richie McDonald of Lonestar, Tim Rushlow of Little Texas. From 2009 to 2017 Matt was the full time drummer for the band Savannah Jack. He played percussion on their first studio record in 2010 opposite Steve Ferrone on drums. For their second studio record in 2015, Matt was the drumset and percussion player in the studio. In the studio, Matt has had the pleasure of working with talented producers including Eric Fritsch, Teddy Morgan, Jim Reilley and Brent Maher. Artist he's recorded with in the studio have included Sheryl Crow, legendary songwriter Buzz Cason and actor Kevin Costner. In 2015, Matt started a podcast for drummers called "Working Drummer", an interview based podcast that maintains a focus on the drummer that makes a living at his or her craft. Along with the help of co-host Zack Albetta, the podcast has a growing audience throughout the world with more listeners every week. www.workingdrummer.net *******SUBSCRIBE/RATE/REVIEW!!! www.richredmond.com/listen The Rich Redmond Show is about all things music, motivation and success. When it comes to such simple things as communication, networking, and even relationships, there are three basic skills you need to remember. You need to build upon the relationship. You also need to maintain them, and work towards them growing. Joining us in the studio is music industry veteran Lyn Stevens who is an award winning photographer, who combines her love of photography with her passion for music. From that, she has learned the ability to network among industry peers, and shares her insight with our listeners. While on the subject, we also discuss documenting your career with photography, and how important it is in the bigger picture. Since her days as a producer at WIBA-FM and Morning DJ & Country Music Director WDUX in Wisconsin, Lyn has always had the bug to work in the music industry. Working in radio provided Lyn the opportunity to meet and interview legendary performers such as Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Charlie Daniels, Loretta Lynn, and The Kentucky Headhunters among many others. After moving to Nashville in 2009, her photography "hobby" started catching the eye of local performers. In 2012, the door was opened as Lyn was honored to have 3 of her photos on display as part of the Cameras and Community in Action Project at The Frist Center for The Visual Arts. Her work went on to be featured in Country Weekly, Billboard Magazine and the Nashville Music Guide. In late 2014, she was asked by country legends, Little Texas, to shoot the photos for their album, "Young for A Long Time," which garnered her the award for "Best Visual Art" at the 2015 Nashville Independent Music Awards. She added the title, “International Photographer” to her resume, after documenting a Blues/Rock tour to Australia in 2016 and another tour to Iceland in 2018. Her work has since been seen on television in Australia and in newspapers and magazines throughout Europe. She approaches photography as a documentarian, based off the strong belief that she is documenting future history, in the present-day moment. Little Texas continue to blend musical streams with their only #1 single, 1994's "My Love". This song is more than just the video, and this band is more than just the hair. But they aren't less than that either. Listen to find out what 80s hair metal and 70s California rock have to do with this song's specific sound. How much is Heart, and how much is Restless Heart? And what does Janis Joplin have to do with it?Also, here's the Brady Seals's solo version that we reference in the episode.
In Lee's own words: I was born and raised in Concord, NC. Just Northeast of Charlottle, it was a town of 25,000 back then. As long as I can remember, music was around. Whether it be the turntables or 8 tracks; where my older brothers played rock and roll of the 60s & 70s, Dad listened to older country artists or Mom's Pontiac Bonneville, which seemed to always have the hits playing through it's car stereo from either 61AM Big Ways, 95FM WROQ or 1100 WBT-AM…Music was always a comforting companion. Not coming from a particularly musical family other than them playing the radio, the drum bug came from the next door neighbor playing and then taking it from there. I was playing with records by 8-9 years old; began school band in 7th grade with the natural progression through high school playing in marching, jazz and symphonic bands throughout. Since music was not viewed in my family as something you pursued as a career, I studied English Literature & Writing at Pfeiffer University until my senior year in 1990-91 when long time friend and a musical mentor, Rick Lee, called and said, "I'm forming a new band and you're the drummer." This was the beginnings of my music career and the 2019 Carolina Beach Music Hall Of Fame band, Too Much Sylvia. After leaving TMS in 1994, I played with a few different bands out of Charlotte and all around the East Coast through 1996. In September 1996, a weeklong trip to Nashville, TN put the hook in and I moved to Music City on January 11, 1997. Fortunately, I got club and road work pretty quickly while learning constantly along the way. The idea was to make a living while seeing the world and that plan came to fruition over the years backing artists like Gary Allan, Mark Chesnutt, Heidi Newfield, Kelly Pickler, Loverboy, Kendell Marvel and, now, Hank Williams Jr. Also, to be able to play and share time with some of the finest musicians & people along the way has just been magic. It's a ride I can't get off of...Nor do I want to. Along with time on the road with Hank Jr., I offer drum/percussion tracks to any clients out of the "Boom Boom Drum Room", do club/showcase/session work around town and spend time caring for my family. It's never boring and music is STILL a comforting companion. Hope to see y'all at a show sometime!! Stone Senate has been called “a heavier version of Lynyrd Skynyrd, crossed with The Allman Brothers Band”. While being mentioned in such heady company is flattering, it is important to note Stone Senate is most definitely not a retro act. They are taking what came naturally from their collective influences a step further and making a name for themselves in the world of modern country rock. The band is fronted by vocalist/ guitarist Clint Woolsey's smoldering, soulful vocals and unmistakable stage presence. Meanwhile stage left and stage right are burning down with dual lead guitars/vocals of James Beau Edwards and Brother Ted Hennington. Add to that the bonded rhythm section of Kieran Cronley on bass and David “DZ” Zettler on drums/ vocals, and you have caught lightning in a bottle. Stone Senate has toured with Bulletboys, Uli Jon Roth, Davisson Brothers Band, and Tantric, and direct support for bands such as Styx, Collective Soul, Jackyl, Cowboy Mouth, Saliva, Little Texas, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Quiet Riot, Asleep at the Wheel, Lit, Alien Ant Farm, Tom Kiefer Band, Billy Gibbons and the BFG's, Tim Montana, Uncle Kracker, Rehab, David Alan Coe, Whitford – St Holmes, David Lee Murphy, Andy Ross, Mike Zito, John Micheal Montgomery, Eddie Montgomery, and Confederate Railroad to name a few. www.stonesenate.com Creator and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Showrunner and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man we sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy. On this episode of Roger the Wild Child Show: Nashville edition, we are joined by award-winning songwriter & artist, Ashley Jordan!ASHLEY JORDAN When it comes to writing slice of life songs and then singing them from the heart, Ashley Jordan is in a league of her own. Born and raised in the tiny town of Harvard, MA, Ashley spent her summers in the Ozark Mountains with her grandparents, listening to and singing country music. She credits her late grandfather as “the light of her life” and it is clear that his influence as a country-folk singer/ songwriter is part of her DNA. At only 13, Ashley convinced her parents to allow her to travel to iconic Harvard Square in Cambridge where she and her guitar set up shop on a street corner. While a family member stood by, crowds gathered and her tip jar filled to the brim. The shy girl came to life in front of an audience and Ashley found her voice and her calling. By the time she was 16, Ashley was touring New England with her first album of original songs. Four albums later, Ashley Jordan is a seasoned live performer who has played to crowds as large as 40,000 opening for everyone from Trace Adkins to The Beach Boys, to Billboard Chart hit-maker Jimmie Allen, to the legendary Charlie Daniels Band. She has scored major market airplay, a first-round Grammy nomination, two unprecedented back-to-back Country Artist of the Year wins at the Boston Music Awards and was twice named a top 10 finalist on Nash Next, where she performed for Scott Borchetta of Big Machine Records, Kix Brooks and music legend Desmond Child. With the upcoming release of her fifth album of original music recorded in Nashville and produced by Jeff Huskins of Little Texas fame, Ashley Jordan is perched at the edge of stardom. Blessed with a powerhouse voice that moves effortlessly from pure country to an authentic pop vibe, Ashley Jordan is on fire and ready to roll. ******Roger the Wild Child Show: Nashville is streamed live every Wednesday night 9pm ET/ 6pm PT on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. Having spent so much of my life surrounded by music, first in radio and then in the music business, I often think in song titles or lyrics. Yesterday I had an old country song come to mind. My internet provider reached out because they noticed a problem with my equipment. Immediately the tune from Little Texas, First Time For Everything, came to mind. I'm still a bit stunned by what happened... This week we welcome Route 3 and Brady Seals! From Southern Missouri, award winning Bluegrass Band ROUTE 3 is comprised of veteran musicians that have performed at venues all over the mid-west as well as nation wide. With a traditional sound, many originals, and great instrumentation, they bring a hard driving bluegrass sound. Route 3 are recipients of the 2020 Arkansas Country Music Awards, Bluegrass Artist of the Year Award. Members of the group include: Jason Jordan: When nine-year-old Jason Jordan met Bill Monroe, he got to play his mandolin, and his love for bluegrass music began. Shortly after that, Jason began playing mandolin in his first band, an all-youth band called The Parking Lot Pickers. Jason subsequently was a founding member of Just In Tyme. He started writing and arranging his own songs. Shortly after he received an invitation to join Brightwater Junction as their guitar player. Jason co-wrote the song Captain that was recorded and made popular by Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, and also wrote seven of the songs on the Route 3 debut album. Doug Clifton: At the age of 12, Doug Clifton began playing bass at his home Church, Macedonia Freewill Baptist in the Southwest Missouri town of Purdy. Soon after, he and best friend Brandon Rickman, along with Brandon's brother Heath and dad, Gary, formed The Rickmans. In 2000, Doug was a part of New Reflections, winners of the S.P.B.G.M.A International Band contest in Nashville, Tennessee that year. Doug has played with multiple bands over the years including The Messengers, Breakaway, The Signature Quartet, The Kellys, The Drifters, Roaring River Sound and New Road. Gaylon Harper: In 1986, Gaylon started learning banjo at home and attending weekend festivals with friends. It wasn't long before he was playing with a local traditional bluegrass band, Jim Orchard and The Bressler Brothers. While traveling the bluegrass circuit with them, Gaylon met the Bob Lewis Family. Shortly after, he was given the opportunity to join their band. In 1994, Gaylon and wife, Katrina, started a group with his two brothers to form The Harpers. 2009 begin the biggest adventure with the Lord so far, when Gaylon and his family begin a full-time music ministry as The Harper Family. In 2010, The Harper Family won the S.P.B.G.M.A International Band competition. A highlight is when Crossroads Recording signed them to their Pisgah Ridge label in 2013. Gaylon came off the road and became music minister at First Baptist of Birch Tree, MO. Roy Bond: Roy attended his first bluegrass show at the age of 12 and was instantly hooked. He soon began learning to play guitar and study music. Roy has been performing on stage since he was 13. He became a member of the Current River Opry show for the last two years of its 45 year run at the age of 14. After that, Roy became a member of Jim Orchard & The Ozark Bluegrass Boys where he stayed for 13 years. He has also done a considerable amount of fill in and part time work with many Ozark based bands including The Bressler Brothers, The Baker Family, Kirby Clark, and many more. Route 3 just got signed to Pine Castle Records. You can see them perform at the upcoming Treasure Lake Bluegrass Festival. For more information visit their website: Route3Bluegrass.com . Singer-songwriter and artist Brady Seals has a pedigree for success. He is related to numerous music industry heavyweights including, Jimmy Seals (Seals & Crofts), Dan Seals (England Dan & John Ford Coley), and country songwriters Troy Seals (Songwriting Hall of Fame Member) and Chuck Seals. Throughout his career, Brady Seals has sold over 11 million albums, topped three genres simultaneously, and his songs continue to captivate audiences and attract licenses for TV, radio, and film. A touring musician since the age of 16, Brady Seals is probably best known for his tenure in Little Texas. During his six years as keyboardist and co-lead singer for the multi- platinum group, they were voted ACM's Vocal Group of the Year Award and received two Grammy nominations. Little Texas celebrated three consecutive number one hits with What Might Have Been, God Blessed Texas, and My Love, all of which Seals co-wrote, granting him the ASCAP Triple Play Award. In 1996 Seals pursued a solo career, collaborating with the legendary Rodney Crowell to co-produce his Warner Brothers album, The Truth. It features a duet with Wynonna Judd, Another You, Another Me that sold over 100,000 singles. In 2002 Seals formed Hot Apple Pie (DreamWorks). Comprised of extraordinary musicians, the music industry dubbed the band “Music City's Super Group." Seals spent the next two years with Hot Apple Pie playing large venues in North America and Canada. Fans clamored for tickets to see and hear their live show as word spread about the amazing musicianship and Seals' “Jagger-esque” stage appeal gaineing the respect of music industry insiders and established acts due to their tight harmonies, agile playing skills, and charismatic stage antics. In 2008 Seals released an independent solo CD called “Play Time” featuring friends, Richard Marx and Stan Lynch (Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers) and hit the road again. He spent two years performing in clubs, theaters, and other venues across the country. When 2015 rolled around Seals along with his friend and co-writer, Gordon Kennedy founded the songwriter show called Music City Pickers LIVE! featuring artists such as Ricky Skaggs, Larry Stewart (Restless Heart), Richie McDonald (Lonestar), Peter Frampton, and many other hit-makers. In 2016 Brady paired up with Lua Crofts to form Seals & Crofts 2. 2016 also brought on another musical project for Seals. He was also asked to front a Tom Petty tribute band called The Petty Junkies. The group is comprised of the who's who of Nashville professional studio musicians and artists who have been very successful in their own right. In 2022 Seals signed with SM1 Music Group/Universal Music to release a brand-new musical project that he's been working on for years. Brady's first single from the project, "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight", has streamed over 1.5 million times on Spotify. His latest single "Farm Boy" is available now on all major streaming platforms. You can check out Brady's website at: www.BradySeals.com.
Lee Kelley has been drumming it up for the likes of Hank Williams Jr, Gary Allen, Little Texas (filling in for Del Gray) and many more. And if I did something I need to deal with maybe I need to give myself those 15 minutes to really feel it. And then go back into activity. What it does is allows me to cancel a negative thought, or to not have my day go off the rails because I got angry or I got sad about something or something that came in that I wasn't expecting, I can really put it in its right place and then reset. Thoughts on Breathing I noticed when I need to stop and take a full breath in. We all tend to do this to the point that when we're busy, like I gotta get this done. Oh, you're panting stop and breathe. Let your brain let your body feel where it's all coming from in the body. Relax into this, then go into the activities. And the breathing I noticed is a big, big deal. I was chased home, spit on, and teased. There was a lot of bullying as a young child and I think if I had been taught mindfulness, I would have realized this wasn't about me, it was about them. It was something broken in them, maybe something going on in their home. I think if I had understood the bigger picture to forgive and let that go; to not just see them as bullies, but see them as individuals that just had brokenness they weren't dealing with, even as children, then I could have not attached those to myself for so many years. I was the choir geek. I was the one that had bad hair and braces. My brother was captain of the football team. He was a senior and I was a freshman. I remember his friends even picking on me or throwing footballs at my head in class. I didn't understand then that mindfulness could have helped me just let it go. Let them go and find their own journey. It'll catch up with them, you just stay true to yourself and evolve. I just want to hug them and say, it's okay. These are others projecting their own stuff. Everybody has their own brokenness, and they're dealing with it in different ways.
