Notes: Anthropic's Claude improves on ChatGPT but still suffers from limitations | TechCrunch (01:10) A startup co-founded by ex-OpenAI employees called Anthropic has raised over $700 million in funding to date, and has developed an AI system similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT.System is called Claude and is accessible through a Slack integration as part of a closed beta Developed with a technique call constitutional AI The company explains:This learning is a principle based approach to aligning AI systems with human intentions, letting AI similar to ChatGPT respond to questions using a simple set of principles as a guide. Anthropic started with a list of around ten private principles that formed the constitution in the AI. The company says the principles are grounded in the concepts of beneficence (maximizing positive impact), nonmaleficence (avoiding giving harmful advice) and autonomy (respecting freedom of choice). Claude is fed an enormous number of examples of text from the web, and learns how likely words are to occur based on patterns such as the semantic context of surrounding text. Therefore it can hold an open-ended conversation, tell jokes and be philosophical, etc. Yann Dubois, a Ph.D. student at Stanford's AI Lab, also did a comparison of Claude and ChatGPT, writing that Claude “generally follows closer [to] what it's asked for” but is “less concise,” as it tends to explain what it said and ask how it can further help. Claude isn't perfect, however. It's susceptible to some of the same flaws as ChatGPT, including giving answers that aren't in keeping with its programmed constraints.Flaw example: asking the system in Base64, an encoding scheme that represents binary data in ASCII format, bypasses its built-in filters for harmful content. Anthropic says that it plans to refine Claude and potentially open the beta to more people down the line. The first CRISPR gene-edited meat is coming—and this is the CEO making sci-fi a reality | FastCompany (11:09) Joshua March is the CEO of SciFi Foods who are using CRISPR to hasten its advances. The gene-editing technology According to the Good Food Institute, there are 152 cultivated meat companies as of the end of 2022, operating in 29 countries.SciFi Foods is different because of the fact they are using CRISPR March got into the cultivated meats a reality because of these companies:“I honestly became pretty disenchanted with the companies in the space and all the arm waving about how the costs would be solved.” For their meat creation they have a simple process that sounds like natural selection:The key is engineering cycles that enable rapid prototyping. The best cell lines will go on to create the next round of modifications. Cost parity with traditional meat is every lab grown meat founder's goal, one that sets a seemingly unattainable target. 2022 - the average price of ground beef was $4.81/lb SciFi is betting that the only way to economically scale cultivated meat is with CRISPR, and that by making iterative tweaks they can create dependable cell lines with rich, meat-y flavor. CEO March stated, “We have an eventual target of $1 per burger at commercial scale.” Once harvested, beef cells will be formulated into a blended burger that is mostly like the plant-based burgers you may already know—soy protein and coconut oil.Adding a small percentage of SciFi cells (5% to 20%, according to March) to give “beefy” notes. According to the Good Food Institute, $2.6 billion has been invested in these alternative proteins since 2010. ISS astronauts are building objects not possible on Earth | Popular Science (20:49) Aboard the International Space Station (ISS) right now is a metal box, the size of a desktop PC tower.Inside, a nozzle is helping build little test parts that aren't possible to make on Earth. Fail under Earth's gravity. The Box is scheduled to spend 45 days aboard the ISS The MIT group behind this process explains it'll be the “first results for a really novel process in microgravity.” It involves taking a flexible silicone skin, shaped like the part it will eventually create, and filling it with a liquid resin. Like how you fill a balloon with air, this will just be resin The resin is sensitive to ultraviolet light. Once UV light reaches the resin it'll cure and stiffen, hardening into a solid structure. Remove the skin and you have your part If everything is successful, the ISS will ship some experimental parts back to Earth for the MIT researchers to test. Ensuring that the parts they've made are structurally sound. The benefit of building parts like this in orbit is that Earth's single most fundamental stressor—the planet's gravity—is no longer a limiting factor. If the experiment is successful, you would be able to produce test parts that are too long to make on Earth. Long-term thinking, if astronauts can make very long parts in space, those pieces could speed up large construction projects, such as the structures of space habitats. used to form the structural frames for solar panels or radiators Another benefit if you can make stuff in space means less things you need to pack into your rocket Every pound of cargo can still cost over $1,000 to put into space. Ultimately the MIT group wants to “make this manufacturing process available and accessible to other researchers.” 3D printing reaches new heights with two-story home | Nasdaq (25:39) A 3D printer weighing more than 12 tons is creating what is believed to be the first 3D-printed, two-story home in the United States.Producing layers of concrete to build the 4,000-square-foot home in Houston. Construction will take a total of 330 hours of printing The project is a two-year collaboration by Hannah, Peri 3D Construction and Cive, a construction engineering company. Hikmat Zerbe, Cive's head of structural engineering, hopes the innovative technique can one day help more quickly and cheaply build multi-family homes. Zerbe talks on the newest for the construction industry:“Traditional construction, you know the rules, you know the game, you know the material properties, the material behavior. In here, everything is new … The material is new, although concrete is an old material in general, but 3D printing concrete is something new.” Since the printer does all the heavy lifting, less workers are needed at the construction site. Gut Bacteria Affect Brain Health | Neuroscience News (31:39) A growing pile of evidence indicates that the tens of trillions of microbes that normally live in our gut microbiome have far-reaching effects on how our bodies function. Produce vitamins, Help digest food, Prevent the overgrowth of harmful bacteria Regulate the immune system According to researchers from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, findings from a new study suggests that the gut microbiome also plays a key role in the health of our brains. To determine whether the gut microbiome may be playing a causal role, the researchers altered the gut microbiomes of mice.Mice were genetically modified to more likely develop Alzheimer's-like brain damage and cognitive impairment. The mice were given a course of antibiotics at 2 weeks of age, permanently changing the composition of bacteria in their microbiomes. For male mice, it reduced the amount of brain damage evident at 40 weeks of age. No significant effect on neurodegeneration in female mice. From other studies we know that male and female brains respond differently to different stimuli. For instance visual stimuli. The composition of our brains are different as well. Further experiments linked three specific short-chain fatty acids — compounds produced by certain types of gut bacteria as products of their metabolism — to neurodegeneration. Were scarce in mice with gut microbiomes altered by antibiotic treatment They appeared to trigger neurodegeneration by activating immune cells in the bloodstream, which in turn activated immune cells in the brain to damage brain tissue. The findings suggest a new approach to preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases by modifying the gut microbiome with antibiotics, probiotics, specialized diets or other means.

Inevitable has already outlasted all of the shows we’ve watched on this show. Including Lexx. At least in terms of number of seasons, so take that, Lexx. It’s Objects in Space,Continue reading →

REVIEW SONGS FROM THE LAST EPISODE Marc: By Amazing Grace Mikey: Ties That Bind FIVE MINUTE SHOW SUMMARY Episode 14: Objects In Space - Written by Joss Whedon PLOT SYNOPSIS (completely unedited version of wikipedia entry on it) MARC: As Serenity flies by a planet, River lies in bed listening to not-quite-audible voices. She arises and takes a walk through the ship's rooms and corridors, in her bare feet, encountering her shipmates in varied conversations with each other. Simon is relaxing with Kaylee in the common room, telling her an amusing anecdote about medical school. River suddenly "sees" them looking at her, with Simon telling her that he'd "be there right now", implying she is responsible for taking him away from his successful medical career. MIKEY: She then finds Jayne and Shepherd Book in the kitchen, where she "hears" Jayne repeat his confession to Mal about selling out the Tams on Ariel, and Book mutter an angry but cryptic statement hinting at his less wholesome past. River continues to wander the ship and is moved by the sound of ocean waves as Zoe and Wash passionately kiss on the nearby bridge. Above the cargo bay, as Mal and Inara discuss her impending departure, River sees their unspoken frustrations over their unrealized relationship. None of the people she encounters are aware of her presence - except when speaking directly to her - making it clear that this is River's mind "walking" telepathically through the ship. MARC: Fleeing the intense emotions, River runs down to the unoccupied cargo bay, where she spots a tree branch. She sees herself on leaf-strewn ground and picks up the branch, telling herself "It's just an object. Doesn't mean what you think." Suddenly, the real world returns, and she finds that she is holding one of Jayne's pistols while the crew surrounds her in a panic, trying to get her to give up the weapon. Mal takes the gun from her and discovers it is loaded and ready to fire. When Mal admonishes her for handling loaded weapons, River runs off, crying. MIKEY: As Mal comments on how alone they are, a small vessel closes with Serenity, aboard which is a man reviewing wanted bulletins for Simon and River. Meanwhile, the crew discuss the dangers of River's presence on the ship. When Zoe muses whether River has ever handled a gun, Kaylee reluctantly tells everyone about her experience during their assault on Adelei Niska's SkyPlex, when River killed three attackers with single shots with her eyes closed. The crew begin to speculate that River may be a "reader", having psychic powers, and though Simon objects, they begin to question whether she is a danger to them. While talking, the crew are being listened to: outside the hull of Serenity, the bounty hunter has left his ship and has tapped into the hull, and below the room, in the cargo bay, River is listening through the floor plating. MARC: Once the crew goes to sleep, the bounty hunter boards Serenity. He first encounters Mal, quickly knocks him unconscious, drops him into his cabin, and then locks the rest of the sleeping crew in their cabins. He surprises Kaylee in the engine room, ties her up, and threatens to rape her if she does not cooperate. Next, he disables Book with a surprise attack. Simon hears a noise and rises to check on his sister, only to be attacked by the stranger, who addresses him by name. The bounty hunter, Jubal Early, waxes philosophically on the nature of things while he demands to know where River is. Though Simon refuses to help Early, the bounty hunter threatens to kill him and rape Kaylee if he refuses, and the doctor reluctantly agrees. MIKEY: With Simon accompanying him, Early checks out the cargo bay and shuttles. When Inara tries to appeal to Early's emotional side, he smacks her across the face, and then locks her in her shuttle. The two men finally arrive on the bridge, where Early settles on a direct threat, announcing loudly to the ship that he will kill Simon if River doesn't reveal herself. River then responds over the ship's intercom, telling Early about how she was unwanted on the ship but could not bring herself to leave, so she simply "melted away", becoming part of Serenity. MARC: In the engine room, River's voice comes over the intercom, reassuring Kaylee and asking her for help. On the bridge, Early is skeptical about River's claim, but she reveals uncanny knowledge of the bounty hunter's own weaknesses. Early gradually starts to accept the possibility that River has joined with the vessel. Meanwhile, River sends Kaylee, who has freed herself, to unlock the cabins. Zoe begins to prepare an assault, but River insists that they do not use guns, and instead tells Mal of an alternate plan. MIKEY: On the bridge, River continues her conversation with Early, needling him about his violent tendencies and his past. Early realizes that River is not part of Serenity, but she has managed to sneak onto his ship, which puts him on the defensive. River reassures him that she will go with him as his bounty, as she is a burden on her shipmates, and her departure will allow them to get on with their lives. As Early starts to leave, Simon tries to stop him, but in the process is shot in the leg. Jayne wakes up and pulls the curtain off of his weapons compartment, but just uses it as a blanket and returns to sleep. Leaving Simon in the cockpit, the bounty hunter starts his EVA back to his ship, but finds Mal outside, waiting in ambush. Mal shoves Early off into space, before welcoming River back aboard Serenity. MARC: Later, in the infirmary, Simon instructs Zoe as she removes the bullet from his leg. Inara walks away from Mal as he tries to examine her cut lip. In the cargo bay, Jayne mocks Book's failure to defeat Early, despite "all them years of priest trainin'", and Book implies that he fought Early and only succumbed after a prolonged fight. Their friendship apparently restored after being damaged by the events of War Stories, Kaylee and River play jacks while Kaylee relates a racy anecdote from her past. River picks up and examines the bouncing ball, with its swirling, multicolored surface. MIKEY: Meanwhile, Jubal Early tumbles helplessly through space and says, "Well... Here I am." Taking images of strange objects in space is incredibly complicated and requires both large telescopes, and even larger teams of scientists to pour over the data. Techniques, codes and algorithms to sift through that data to find the unusual patterns is an incredibly difficult and challenging task. However with it we can capture some incredible things whether it be images of black holes, to asteroids literally spinning themselves apart, or even missing endangered species here on earth.References: Iowa State University. And that’s exactly what they all are, Objects in Space. This is the final episode of the series proper, and it’s a great way to go out for the show. We finally get River as part of the crew, and we get the best villain that the series had to offer in Jubal Early. Next week we’ll have the episode for the feature film Serenity, and then the final episode of this season for the ranking.
In "Objects in Space", after River picks up a gun the crew discusses her danger to the rest of them. Meanwhile, a bounty hunter named Jubal Early sneaks onboard Serenity to apprehend the Tams. When River is not found on the ship, she announces that she has become Serenity. While Jubal tries to comprehend this, River forms a plan. Kristen and Mike discuss the existentialist themes of this episode, and compare and contrast River and Early. We round out our Firefly discussion with our series wrap-up. Topics include: Yearbook Awards, In Memorium, Biggest Damn Hero, Favorite Episodes, Favorite Characters, and why Firefly was cancelled. PLUS! What would we have seen in Firefly Season 2?
Chris, Alex and both Toms celebrate the 5th anniversary of the podcast with gin and a digression to The David Cage. Plus: more Mooncrash, Yoku’s Island Express, Warhammer 40K: Gladius, and Objects In Space. That’s for my nan! And her house! Tom F’s further explorations of Prey: Mooncrash reveal a few rough edges. Alex has [...]
This is the last episode for Rooms of the House! I hope y'all enjoy it! If you want to help decide any future episodes, follow me on Instagram because I will be having polls there every time we come near an event.

This week on Player Attack, we're headed out to the far reaches of the galaxy. First up, it's survival time as Jessica explores Oxygen Not Included, a new experience from Don't Starve developer Klei. The game is packed with adorable features and creatures, and some unique interstellar residents, but - you guessed it - easy to pick up, fiendishly difficult to master. You can forget everything you think you know about driving a spaceship. Turns out that it's not at all like flying a plane, and a lot more like piloting a giant, floating submarine. At least, that's the approach Flat Earth Games is taking, with the upcoming release of Objects In Space - a game that also encourages you to build your own cockpit. And as if all that wasn't enough, in the latest clip from Angelo's Player A-Chat series, we sat down with local Adelaide games writer James O'Connor to chat about freelance writing, kids' magazines, video game academia, and the thesis he wrote about player-driven narratives in GTA IV. ...plus, of course, we have all the latest in gaming news - this is Player Attack! http://www.playerattack.com
Ayden & Kash are at GX Australia and are joined by Leigh from Flat Earth Games in Sydney, talking about Objects In Space, the inspirations of gameplay and the rig build and much more! Sadly, we’ve reached the last episode of Firefly, and sadly, it’s quite terrible. “Objects in Space” is little more than excuse for Joss Whedon to share his thoughts on existentialism with us, and well, that’s about as edifying as it sounds. iTunes RSS

We’re back from our two-week break and we’re hitting the ground running, Gianni has returned from the land of pineapples and beaches to host once again. First off this week we’re talking justice for cheaters in online games. With player vs player elements in pretty much every title these days, the temptation to cheat can be too much for some people. But the creators of Overwatch, Blizzard have found a unique way to take down cheaters and keep them out of their servers for good. This week we spoke to sibling founders Elissa and Leigh Harris of Flat Earth Games. They spoke to us about their game “Objects in Space”. This space fairing simulator strays away from classic twitch based space combat to a more strategic system management style game coupled with a unique home built physical interface. Elissa and Leigh tell us how they are taking the genre into a new direction. You can find out more about their game at www.objectsgame.com With many new developers making great games, systems like Steam Greenlight can really get the ball rolling. But sadly there is a new disturbing trend is rearing its head in the gaming world. Organisations posing as legitimate publishers are now approaching small inexperienced developers promising huge exposure and a guaranteed audience for a “small” percentage of profits, only to leave them high and dry when things don’t go as planned. The team discuss ways to weed out the frauds and the difference between social media statistics and true audience engagement. You can find us on all the social media sites, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Twitch, YouTube and Steam. Just search for "pixelsift".
The AstrOlympics project explores the spectacular range of science that we can find both in the impressive feats of the Olympic Games as well as in cosmic phenomena throughout the Universe.
Our penultimate outing with the Crew of the Serenity. It's an emotional affair that wraps a few plot lines up but leaves us asking, "WHERE THE HELL IS SERIES 2?"
Episode 14 Objects in Space (dt: Der Kopfgeldjäger).
In the series ending episode, River Tam agonizes over the crew's reactions towards her as she comes to terms with her new home and new family. Counterpointed against the bounty hunter Jubal Early who also tries to find meaning in the world, River's intense reactions to the feelings of the crew eventually allow her to find some sense of normalcy.
“It’s just an object. It doesn’t mean what you think.”

Summary: Adam J Purcell, Andy Simpkins and Keith Dunn sit down, philosophically, in front of the final ever Firefly episode, ‘Objects in Space’, and spout our usual nonsense! Jubal Early is having an existential crisis, River is one with Serenity and Simon is injured, again. But enough of their problems, please sit down with us […]

Lecture 03: The matrices that are used to move objects in space.
Well, it took me nearly two years, but I've finally done it. I have now recorded commentaries for every episode of Firefly. I finish out this long, memorable journey, fittingly enough with the final episode, Objects In Space. In the show, River melts away and becomes the ship, a bounty hunter sneaks on board and wrestles with his own sanity while holding Simon at gunpoint and Jayne sleeps through it all. Please join me for this one-man, pity party as I mourn the loss of such an amazing, innovative, funny slice of science fiction greatness in television. As is generally the case, please listen for my preemptive countdown before starting the episode on your DVD.The Firefly commentaries have stopped here, for now. He understands. He does not comprehend.
