In this international episode sponsored by Muse Microscopy, I sit down with Junya Fukuoka and Norman Zerbe—presidents of the Asian and European Societies of Digital Pathology—to unpack how cultural, regulatory, and infrastructural forces are shaping progress differently across continents. From direct-to-digital tissue imaging considered an alternative to frozen sections in Asia, to legal hurdles in Europe, we discuss what's advancing adoption—and what's still holding it back.
Today, we're diving back into the murky waters of secrets with none other than the incredible Dr. Katheryn Zerbe. This time around, we're exploring what secrets do to our bodies, why we keep them, and how they might just be fueling more than your midnight snack cravings. Kathryn Zerbe, MD, FAED, FABP, is a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and author of over 150 clinical papers, book chapters, reviews, and 4 books. Her publications include the landmark volumes: The Body Betrayed: Women, Eating Disorders, and Treatment (1993) and Integrated Treatment of Eating Disorders: Beyond the Body Betrayed (2008). Tweetable Quotes "Your secrets tell us who we are, but too many secrets with huge content areas that we keep out." - Dr. Kathryn Zerbe "Eating disorders are often hidden in plain view." - Dr. Kathryn Zerbe "Secrets may be the greatest problem of all. We don't look at the toll they take on the mind or the body." - Dr. Kathryn Zerbe "Secrets also make us very aware of where our boundary lies." - Dr. Kathryn Zerbe “ Transparency and sharing the content of a secret or information that might be private is not the point here. It's not about the content. It's not about people knowing. It's about what happens to you and your internal state and your relationships when the secret happens.” - Rachelle Heinemann "We all need somebody to talk to." - Dr. Kathryn Zerbe Resources Learn More About Dr. Kathryn Zerbe Here! Sin is not an outdated term. It's God's way to describe our natural bent towards destructive choices, fractured relationships, and crooked thinking. But even though we can't help ourselves, God can. And He provides grace – spiritual empowerment – to enable us to rise above… if we will first humbly ask for forgiveness and then allow Him the room to make changes in our lives. It's the New Year, and it's time to lose weight, read more, eat healthier, and exercise regularly… are you tired yet? We all know that most New Year's resolutions to do more and be more are discarded by February. But what if the secret to the best year yet is to subtract instead of add to your life? As the river flows, it makes no distinctions between who can enter and who can't. Neither do we. The next generation is as much a present force as a future one, and we do our best to empower them into be leaders in this gospel saturation movement. Join us as we explore 2 Timothy and Jeremiah for insights for empowering kids and teens, whatever it takes. When we think of a river, we do not envision something that stays in one place. In fact, a river does not stand still - a river flows! In Ezekiel 47, God gives the prophet a vision of what happens when the river of forgiveness, healing, and hope flows out of the church. The Valley Church will be a river church. We will be on a mission. We will be a church in and for the community. S., Hopke, A., Degrange, M., Villavicencio, B., Mansour, M. K., Zerbe, C. S., Irimia, D., Amir, A., Weiner, O. D. Abstract: Neutrophils exhibit self-amplified swarming to sites of injury and infection. How swarming is controlled to ensure the proper level of neutrophil recruitment is unknown. Using an ex vivo model of infection, we find that human neutrophils use active relay to generate multiple pulsatile waves of swarming signals. Unlike classic active relay systems such as action potentials, neutrophil swarming relay waves are self-extinguishing, limiting the spatial range of cell recruitment. We identify an NADPH-oxidase-based negative feedback loop that is needed for this self-extinguishing behavior. Through this circuit, neutrophils adjust the number and size of swarming waves for homeostatic levels of cell recruitment over a wide range of initial cell densities. We link a broken homeostat to neutrophil over-recruitment in the context of human chronic granulomatous disease. Copy rights belong to original authors. Notes: Anthropic's Claude improves on ChatGPT but still suffers from limitations | TechCrunch (01:10) A startup co-founded by ex-OpenAI employees called Anthropic has raised over $700 million in funding to date, and has developed an AI system similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT.System is called Claude and is accessible through a Slack integration as part of a closed beta Developed with a technique call constitutional AI The company explains:This learning is a principle based approach to aligning AI systems with human intentions, letting AI similar to ChatGPT respond to questions using a simple set of principles as a guide. Anthropic started with a list of around ten private principles that formed the constitution in the AI. The company says the principles are grounded in the concepts of beneficence (maximizing positive impact), nonmaleficence (avoiding giving harmful advice) and autonomy (respecting freedom of choice). Claude is fed an enormous number of examples of text from the web, and learns how likely words are to occur based on patterns such as the semantic context of surrounding text. Therefore it can hold an open-ended conversation, tell jokes and be philosophical, etc. Yann Dubois, a Ph.D. student at Stanford's AI Lab, also did a comparison of Claude and ChatGPT, writing that Claude “generally follows closer [to] what it's asked for” but is “less concise,” as it tends to explain what it said and ask how it can further help. Claude isn't perfect, however. It's susceptible to some of the same flaws as ChatGPT, including giving answers that aren't in keeping with its programmed constraints.Flaw example: asking the system in Base64, an encoding scheme that represents binary data in ASCII format, bypasses its built-in filters for harmful content. Anthropic says that it plans to refine Claude and potentially open the beta to more people down the line. The first CRISPR gene-edited meat is coming—and this is the CEO making sci-fi a reality | FastCompany (11:09) Joshua March is the CEO of SciFi Foods who are using CRISPR to hasten its advances. The gene-editing technology According to the Good Food Institute, there are 152 cultivated meat companies as of the end of 2022, operating in 29 countries.SciFi Foods is different because of the fact they are using CRISPR March got into the cultivated meats a reality because of these companies:“I honestly became pretty disenchanted with the companies in the space and all the arm waving about how the costs would be solved.” For their meat creation they have a simple process that sounds like natural selection:The key is engineering cycles that enable rapid prototyping. The best cell lines will go on to create the next round of modifications. Cost parity with traditional meat is every lab grown meat founder's goal, one that sets a seemingly unattainable target. 2022 - the average price of ground beef was $4.81/lb SciFi is betting that the only way to economically scale cultivated meat is with CRISPR, and that by making iterative tweaks they can create dependable cell lines with rich, meat-y flavor. CEO March stated, “We have an eventual target of $1 per burger at commercial scale.” Once harvested, beef cells will be formulated into a blended burger that is mostly like the plant-based burgers you may already know—soy protein and coconut oil.Adding a small percentage of SciFi cells (5% to 20%, according to March) to give “beefy” notes. According to the Good Food Institute, $2.6 billion has been invested in these alternative proteins since 2010. ISS astronauts are building objects not possible on Earth | Popular Science (20:49) Aboard the International Space Station (ISS) right now is a metal box, the size of a desktop PC tower.Inside, a nozzle is helping build little test parts that aren't possible to make on Earth. Fail under Earth's gravity. The Box is scheduled to spend 45 days aboard the ISS The MIT group behind this process explains it'll be the “first results for a really novel process in microgravity.” It involves taking a flexible silicone skin, shaped like the part it will eventually create, and filling it with a liquid resin. Like how you fill a balloon with air, this will just be resin The resin is sensitive to ultraviolet light. Once UV light reaches the resin it'll cure and stiffen, hardening into a solid structure. Remove the skin and you have your part If everything is successful, the ISS will ship some experimental parts back to Earth for the MIT researchers to test. Ensuring that the parts they've made are structurally sound. The benefit of building parts like this in orbit is that Earth's single most fundamental stressor—the planet's gravity—is no longer a limiting factor. If the experiment is successful, you would be able to produce test parts that are too long to make on Earth. Long-term thinking, if astronauts can make very long parts in space, those pieces could speed up large construction projects, such as the structures of space habitats. used to form the structural frames for solar panels or radiators Another benefit if you can make stuff in space means less things you need to pack into your rocket Every pound of cargo can still cost over $1,000 to put into space. Ultimately the MIT group wants to “make this manufacturing process available and accessible to other researchers.” 3D printing reaches new heights with two-story home | Nasdaq (25:39) A 3D printer weighing more than 12 tons is creating what is believed to be the first 3D-printed, two-story home in the United States.Producing layers of concrete to build the 4,000-square-foot home in Houston. Construction will take a total of 330 hours of printing The project is a two-year collaboration by Hannah, Peri 3D Construction and Cive, a construction engineering company. Hikmat Zerbe, Cive's head of structural engineering, hopes the innovative technique can one day help more quickly and cheaply build multi-family homes. Zerbe talks on the newest for the construction industry:“Traditional construction, you know the rules, you know the game, you know the material properties, the material behavior. In here, everything is new … The material is new, although concrete is an old material in general, but 3D printing concrete is something new.” Since the printer does all the heavy lifting, less workers are needed at the construction site. Gut Bacteria Affect Brain Health | Neuroscience News (31:39) A growing pile of evidence indicates that the tens of trillions of microbes that normally live in our gut microbiome have far-reaching effects on how our bodies function. Produce vitamins, Help digest food, Prevent the overgrowth of harmful bacteria Regulate the immune system According to researchers from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, findings from a new study suggests that the gut microbiome also plays a key role in the health of our brains. To determine whether the gut microbiome may be playing a causal role, the researchers altered the gut microbiomes of mice.Mice were genetically modified to more likely develop Alzheimer's-like brain damage and cognitive impairment. The mice were given a course of antibiotics at 2 weeks of age, permanently changing the composition of bacteria in their microbiomes. For male mice, it reduced the amount of brain damage evident at 40 weeks of age. No significant effect on neurodegeneration in female mice. From other studies we know that male and female brains respond differently to different stimuli. For instance visual stimuli. The composition of our brains are different as well. Further experiments linked three specific short-chain fatty acids — compounds produced by certain types of gut bacteria as products of their metabolism — to neurodegeneration. Were scarce in mice with gut microbiomes altered by antibiotic treatment They appeared to trigger neurodegeneration by activating immune cells in the bloodstream, which in turn activated immune cells in the brain to damage brain tissue. The findings suggest a new approach to preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases by modifying the gut microbiome with antibiotics, probiotics, specialized diets or other means.

And just as a reminder, I am Jordan VanCamp. I am a pastor's wife at Passion Creek. We have been a church for, wow, like almost seven years now or something like that. And so it's been. I've got three daughters. They're all in school now, which is really fun. And I am so excited that I have a new co-host with me. I have Sarah Beth with me, and I know, just, I wanna, how about you to introduce yourself, tell us about you. Awesome. Thank you so much, Jordan, for inviting me here. I'm excited to be here. I'm a leader, educator, and passion for, and have a huge passion for servant leadership. I've had the privilege of creating and. For several companies and businesses where I was always trying to create a positive and inclusive work environment and space for people. In addition to my professional pursuits, my faith in Jesus is super important to me. I'm married to my husband of Devin of 16 years together for 18. We have two daughters, Morgan and Alex. This, and they are definitely on their own now. And so I'm super excited to be here. I am a proud alumnus of Grace Christian University at a Grand Rapids, Michigan, where I graduated Summa CU Loud in their seminary program with a focus in leadership and women's ministry. I'm just really humbled by the opportunity to use my skills and experience to encourage and inspire others in their faith journey. I'm really looking forward to discussing topics related to faith and cultivating meaningful relationships on the Cultivate Podcast. So thank you so much for having me and inviting me to join you. Yeah, absolutely. I'm so excited. So today's episode, we're just gonna go over just what are, what's our vision for the podcast? What do we, where do we see it going? What topics do we see covering? And then in the next episodes, we'll obviously dive into specific topics. And so there are just like we did before, we talked a lot about leadership, about family, about marriage and so we want to do all of those same things and then expand. We really have a heart for discipleship at Passion Creek. And as I've run the women's ministry over the years, that has been my biggest like heart. My biggest goal was for us to be able to pour into women of all ages, like older women, pouring into younger women, pouring into older women, because we really can. Just because we're younger doesn't mean an older woman can't learn from us. And then vice versa, obviously. Yep. And I love that. One of those things is we find that in scripture, we find it in Titus to chapter two verses three through five. Sir bet. Do you wanna read that like verse specifically? Absolutely. So Titus two, three through five reads, older women likewise are to be relevant ENT in behavior, not slanderous or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children to be self-controlled, pure, working at home kind and submissive to their husbands that the word of God may not be. I don't know what that word is. Reveled. Reviled. Rev. Reviled. I'm gonna have to reread that. No Naval . I'll have reread that. Reviled, right? Reviled. I think that's what it is. Okay. I'm gonna reread that. We'll just have him pause that way. Absolutely the verse in Titus two, three through five reads, older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanders or slaves. Too much wine. They are to teach what is good. And so to train the young women to love their husbands and children to be self-controlled, pure, working at home kind and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. Yeah, I love that. I love that it speaks so much. Both older women and younger women, we both have a place and a role in the church. And I think that it's really important and I think that just a podcast that is going to touch on those things. It's going to give encouragement and tips and suggestions and and then just have like women who there is an age gap between SarahBeth and I. Yeah. I'm not a huge one. Sure. But enough that, like you raised a daughter who is. older now, and her, she's in her twenties and absolutely, it's like I still have young kids, so there's a lot of stuff that like of life that you have been through that I have not yet gone through. And so I feel like there's so much that we can talk through and discuss that's gonna be beneficial just for our individual lives, but also for all of you guys who are listening in. Who may have be in that same season of life that I am or may be the same season of life that Sarah Beth is in. Absolutely. I also think it's important that the goal of this podcast is to find ways to help teach both you and I and our listeners to cultivate great relationships with others and really inspiring everyone to be part of our community and enjoying what that looks like together, creating that togetherness, the groups together. Enjoy life together. And I think along with enjoying life together and cultivating those relationships, we learn great lessons that can also inspire us to live in alignment with what Titus Two three through five is talking about. Absolutely. I think that on this podcast we also wanna talk about Just like the importance of self-control and purity how these virtues can help us as women cultivate those strong, healthy relationships, like you were saying. I think that those are big things that society doesn't hold much value in. Self-control. I agree. Purity, like it's very much a , women today, this is my body. I'm gonna do whatever I want with it. , there's, and that we're old fashioned. Yes. That we're just like, oh my gosh. You said the word purity. That means something from the 1920s. Yeah. Why are we talking about something like purity? That's weird. And there's also a, a. Some somewhat of a stigma, I think about talking freely and openly about things that the Bible talks about. Yeah. Because people don't understand how it could be relevant today. And so I think through this podcast, we're gonna try to be a positive role model for everyone that's listening. And for each other, living in alignment with the way that we should go and what the Bible teaches us. So I think it's important that we share. We long for everyone to have that openness to hear what self-control means. And it may not mean what you think society is saying it means. Yeah. Cause there can be misconstrued statements and, popular people or famous people that we listen to that talk about those things and they give it a bad reputation. But our goal is to really share with you the goodness that those things bring. Yeah. And how it actually provides more peace in your life. And it removes. Guilt that we have had by not living in alignment, alignment with that, if that makes sense. Absolutely. And I think it's important too that. there. It's one thing to reach scripture and to figure that out and dissect it and really dig through okay, what is the Bible saying here? What is God saying here? What is Paul teaching about? Like that's all very important. But it also is like, how do I play that to my own life? , and so as a listener, I think it's really like crucial to hear like how do I, like how does Jordan struggle with self-control? Like what are ways that I have failed and. The Lord has worked through that and taught me, like Amen. So giving these like personal examples and being on some level vulnerable, trans transparent. Yeah. Not like you we're spilling everything here. There's things that you keep to yourself, but Yes. Yes. But having even just as a general, this is a situation I was in and here's how like I handled it wrong and here's how, like the Lord taught me through that, and maybe this is what I should have done because I think it's so easy to. to a podcast and have like someone sharing their story and you're sitting back going oh my gosh, I've done that too. You're like, oh, wow. Like I had a friend who did that meet to me yesterday, and I didn't even think that maybe that was her thought process and I got mad and maybe I, Yeah, you just, you get different perspectives and you hear different sides of the story. And when it's all based in scripture, yes. It, when we bring it back to this, these are our faults, these are the ways we messed up. . I was in a situation and I was so proud the Holy Spirit provided, and I handled it correctly. Yeah. A win. Yeah. But when we drive it all back to scripture, I think that's what's most important, yes. It's those holding those with two hands, like yes. Personal experience, things that we've been through, things that we have done, but also , how that aligns with the Bible or how it didn't align with the Bible. Yeah. And how we should change that. And I also think that there's often times where you might listen to a podcast and you might hear somebody talking about something that aligns with our faith, that aligns with what we're working on right now, or what we're reading in the Bible. . But we don't actually, maybe we have new believers on here that are just trying to understand. Stand, how to, pray or how to live in a godly way, how to be a godly woman. And I think our leader, our, everyone who's listening to this, could probably benefit from learning what we are doing, how you do it. , giving them actual practical steps in their journey, that they can follow and align with. I think that it's easy to, like you said, read your Bible and then try to dig into what that looks like. But one of the challenges can be, okay, but what do I do after I read the Bible and after I try to research what that verse might mean to somebody else on Google? , because that's common, if you're a new believer, you might say, you might Google, Hey, give me a Bible verse. How I can overcome my worthlessness if I don't feel worthy, like what do I do? But here, I think on the Cultivate podcast, our goal is to give you true actual meaningful steps that you can take as a follower of Christ. And, we're gonna share with you what Jordan and I have done individually and together. Yeah. And just the way that we have worked to love on our family, our friends, our marriages, and make certain priorities that are important. , just as you were talking it, just I don't even think we have this on our notes, but I was just thinking I know that your heart, like you love to learn, you love knowledge, you love reading and all of that. And so there are, and we've done this in the past in previous episodes of the Cultivate Women's Podcast, but we've brought up like books that we have read that were helpful resources and so that's something that we will definitely be doing also in the future. There, we did a whole series. If you guys, if you're a. Seasoned listener, if you've been around since the beginning. , we did a whole series on the book Rhythms of Renewal by Oh yes. Rebecca Lyons. Yes. And it was fantastic. Yes. And so we just did four episodes and they were a little bit longer cuz those are big sections of the book. Yes. What, but what did you know, what did that look like? What did, what are those rhythms of. And all of those things look like. And so I know that's probably something that we'll also do in the future is Yes. Found a book that Zerbe loved and she's Hey, you need to read this. Yes. And then we're gonna share about it because this was, this will be so helpful for women in every stage of life. Or that are going through this specific thing or whatever it is. Yes. Or vice versa. I read a book and I'm like, Hey, you've gotta read this. Yes. Cuz I know that's a heart for both of us. So you can definitely look forward to. I wouldn't say book reviews, but Yeah. But just communicating together and teaching you guys what we learned from different books. . And maybe even teaching you how you can become a reader. Yeah. Sometimes you might hear that people are reading a book and you're like, oh my gosh, that's so lame. Why are we reading a book? Yeah. But there actually is, So much knowledge and truth that you can get from books and different ways to think about things. And they actually can help me in diving into the Bible and learning more things about what scripture has to say. So I love to read. I think it'll be awesome to do a few book reviews and have you guys go along with us, maybe even read along with us. Yeah, absolutely. And learn what we're learning about and ways that are different. When you read through an author's. , so many different things come to light and you can learn in such a different perspective. . Yeah, absolutely. So those are just the, some of the things. Was there any other ones that, that you were thinking, Sarah Beth, of just like topics, ideas that we wanted to touch on? I think that one of the things that I wanted to make sure we touched on was that our goal is to really help encourage women to live a godly life and. Younger women and older women both have that ability to do that. You don't have to be a specific age. I believe that with, in all women, we all can be leaders in our own way, right? Yeah. And we can be encouragers in our own way. And so just the, to drive home that this podcast is all about encouragement, inspiration and really sharing with you. How you can be, part of our journey and how we can impact your life in a positive way. So that's my biggest hope here for what the podcast is gonna represent. Yeah, I love that. And I, that's definitely both of our hearts and our desires. And we just want to be an encouragement. We want to encourage you to cultivate relationships in your own life, cultivate your relationship with the Lord. Cultivate a love for learning, for reading. Memorizing scripture for a relationship with Jesus. Yeah. We wanna drive that home. , our life would be nothing without him. And so I think that bringing in the importance of actually what that relationship can look like as a woman. Yeah. It's so easy to go to church and hear all these different things, as women we just think so differently and we have so many different things going on. A hundred million ideas at one moment, right? ? Yes. So I think this is a great safe, spla safe space for women to come and for us to just encourage them in that. Yeah, absolutely. That is all we have for today. We are so excited. We hope that you would tune in for the episodes in the future. We are going to be diving to all the things that we just talked about today, and we cannot wait. All right. Thank you, Jordan, for allowing me the opportunity to participate in the relaunch of the Cultivate podcast. I just really hope that the conversation is meaningful and helpful to all of our listeners.

If the IRS gets all the money Congress promised it over the next ten years, its enforcement powers will grow a lot. One school of thought is that protections for taxpayers should also get a plus-up. Federal Drive host Tom Temin spoke with Dean Zerbe, who is a proponent of Congress passing a taxpayers rights bill. Zerbe worked on the IRS reform commission in the late 1990s, and is an attorney working for tax whistleblowers.

Tell me something- before you took a literature class, did you enjoy reading just for the sake of it? And now, do you find yourself identifying motifs, classifying steps in the hero's journey, or internally (or externally, we don't judge) commenting on how the color of the rug elevates the mood of a certain scene? Well, we're about to do that to you, only in this case, we're gonna tell you everything you need to know about maize, and, maybe, strawberries. Have you heard of Terpenoids? Terpe-WHAT?- you may be asking. Well never fear! In this episode we interview Dr. Philipp Zerbe on terpenoids and why they're such an important area of research. Hosts Roxanne Salkeld and Alejandra Valenzuela talk with Dr. Philipp Zerbe, a German-born plant biologist who currently works at UC Davis. Dr. Zerbe speaks of his research lab's desire to better understand the diversity of chemistry that plants utilize to defend themselves against stress and react to their surroundings. We start with the world's most formidable nerd, FARRAN ZERBE. A coin collector or NUMISMATIC he studied money and other types of currency like CIGARETTES in prison. And from there we head on over to JAZZ CIGARETTES or JOINTS which got their name from the OPIUM DENS of yesteryear which had their heyday in the US during the GOLD RUSH. Which instead of the folksy prospector being the first image that pops into mind when thinking GOLD RUSH, it should be the horrific CALIFORNIA GENOCIDE committed by the government on native peoples'. When Larry Zerbe took over as director of the COR (City of Reading) Tennis Program in 2006, his vision was to expose city kids, most of whom would be picking up a racket for the first time, to the game of tennis. Zerbe tells Zeke that there originally had been some consideration given to limiting COR to city kids, but the lure of tennis, high-quality instruction, top-notch competition, and fun attracted more and more suburban kids and eventually every school district in the county was coming to the program. Zerbe, who grew up in the Oakbrook housing project and now is the Alvernia University tennis coach, tells Zeke that COR has helped break down barriers and turned the program into a melting pot – with tennis the common denominator fostering a connection between kids from different worlds. The kids come to COR for the tennis but leave with an appreciation and awareness that serves them for a lifetime. The remarkable thing about COR bridging social gaps is that tennis traditionally discriminates fiscally and culturally. Zerbe tells Zeke that he and his COR staff also offer adult classes. As for tennis, COR has produced a number of outstanding scholastic and collegiate players through its summer and winter programs. Zerbe tells Zeke that the COR program receives support from the Reading Recreation Department, Fromuth Tennis and the United States Tennis Association. The connections Zerbe has made with the USTA enables COR to send kids to the U.S. Open and Philadelphia Freedom matches.

Frank Merriwell, the much-loved fictional hero of Street and Smith's Tip Top Weekly, was first introduced to readers on April 18, 1896. Merriwell was the creation of writer Burt L. Standish (real name: Gilbert Patten), and embodied a new type of dime novel hero, one who relied as much upon mental as physical prowess. The Yale-educated Merriwell possessed "a body like Tarzan's and a head like Einstein's," wrote one admiring writer, and thus represented "the perfect union of brain and brawn." The show First ran on NBC radio from March 26 to June 22, 1934 as a 15-minute serial airing three times a week at 5:30pm. Sponsored by Dr. West's Toothpaste, this program starred Donald Briggs in the title role. Harlow Wilcox was the announcer. After a 12-year gap, the series returned October 5, 1946 as a 30-minute NBC Saturday morning show, continuing until June 4, 1949. Lawson Zerbe starred as Merriwell, Jean Gillespie and Elaine Rostas as Inza Burrage, Harold Studer as Bart Hodge and Patricia Hosley as Elsie Belwood. The announcer was Harlow Wilcox, and the Paul Taubman Orchestra supplied the background music. There are at least three generations of Merriwells: Frank, his half-brother Dick, and Frank's son, Frank Jr. There is a marked difference between Frank and Dick. Frank usually handled challenges on his own. Dick has mysterious friends and skills that help him, especially an old Indian friend without whom the stories would not have been quite as interesting.
