C’est un des effets inattendus de la pandémie : le boom des exportations de dattes d’Arabie saoudite. En 2020, le pays est passé devant l'Algérie qui était jusque-là le premier producteur de dattes à fournir le marché belge. Entre 2019 et 2020 les importations de dattes saoudiennes au port d’Anvers ont bondi de 88%. « Impensable il y a quelques années » pour Mustapha Chihabi, président de la société d’import export belge Tomoor. D’autant que la datte saoudienne est taxée à 7,7% dans les ports européens alors que les variétés nord-africaines Deglet Nour et Medjoul sont exonérées de droits de douane. Mais les restrictions de voyage et de rassemblement sont passées par là et ont fait s’effondrer le tourisme religieux dans le Royaume. Le Haj et la Omra, le grand et le petit pèlerinage qui drainent des foules ont été redimensionnés. Moins de pèlerins, c’est moins de dattes consommées et le pays a dû chercher des marchés alternatifs via Dubaï qui joue le rôle de « Hub » dans la région. L'Arabie saoudite à l'initiative d'une année de la datte en 2027 Cette arrivée massive de dattes saoudiennes sur le marché européen est le fruit d’une ambition qui dépasse le cadre de la pandémie. La dynamique a été renforcée par l’octroi du label de « patrimoine culturel » de l’Unesco à l’oasis de palmiers dattiers de Al-Ahsa. Le Royaume a par ailleurs demandé l’année dernière à la FAO que 2027 soit déclarée année internationale du palmier dattier. Une résolution en bonne voie d’être obtenue. Les exportations saoudiennes ont contribué à faire baisser les prix ces derniers mois. D’autant que la dernière production dans certains pays comme la Tunisie et l’Algérie a augmenté de 20% environ selon un importateur basé à Marseille. Il faudra deux ans selon la société Tomoor pour réguler le marché, qui se caractérise par des stocks élevés faute d’une consommation suffisante au niveau mondial. Le Ramadan 2021 est le deuxième marqué par des ruptures de jeûne moins festives. L’annulation de cérémonies de mariage dans les pays maghrébins pèse aussi lourd sur la demande. Les consommateurs en quête de qualité Coté fruit, la mode de la variété Medjoul se confirme, elle est plus chère mais beaucoup plus goûteuse et répond à la demande d’authenticité des consommateurs. Les produits sans sucre ajouté sont par ailleurs de plus en plus prisés au détriment de la datte séchée glucosée. La pâte de dattes et le sucre de dattes se développent, eux aussi, et pourraient demain permettre à la datte de ne plus être seulement un produit « ethnique » et « festif » mais un fruit du quotidien, qui se vend toute l’année.

Pour ce mois sacré, beaucoup en profitent habituellement pour se rendre à la Mecque et accomplir le petit pèlerinage, la « Omra ». Mais pandémie oblige, seules les personnes vaccinées contre le Covid-19 seront autorisées à s’y rendre. Voilà des mois que les villes saintes de l'islam tournent au ralenti, privant le Royaume d’une source de revenus primordiale. C'est la seconde source de revenus pour le royaume saoudien derrière les hydrocarbures. Le Hajj, le Grand pèlerinage qui tombe cette année en juillet draine à lui-seul plus de deux millions de fidèles. Il est obligatoire pour tout musulman en ayant les moyens physiques et financiers. C'est bel et bien une rente dont on estime qu’elle génèrerait en quelques jours 8 milliards de dollars. Quant à la Omra, le petit pèlerinage qui, lui, n'est pas obligatoire et peut se faire toute l’année (du moins en principe), il attire 8 millions de visiteurs et rapporterait 4 milliards de dollars par an. Priorité des autorités : réduire radicalement le flux des pèlerins Cela a été son objectif dès le mois de mars 2020 en effet. Le ministère saoudien des Lieux saints a dû appeler les pèlerins à reporter leur séjour. Impossible de continuer à organiser normalement l’un des plus grands rassemblements humains de la planète. Il a été restreint à un nombre limité de Saoudiens et de résidents du royaume. Depuis quelques semaines, les autorités assurent vacciner massivement. Le royaume ne donne pas d'objectif chiffré pour le Hajj prévu en juillet prochain. Mais il a tranché : seules les personnes doublement vaccinées ou immunisés auront accès aux lieux saints. Les autorités font le pari que d’ici l’été, une grande partie de la population mondiale aura été vaccinée et se remettra à voyager. Rien n'est moins sûr. Beaucoup de musulmans devraient renoncer au pèlerinage cette année, faute de moyens ou de vaccination. Des conséquences économiques désastreuses pour le Royaume Ce sont des milliards de dollars en moins dans les caisses du Royaume cette année. Mais pour les dirigeants saoudiens, l’industrie que sont devenus les pèlerinages ne saurait s’arrêter. Des milliards de dollars ont été récemment investis dans un train express reliant les deux villes saintes, ou dans d'immenses hôtels de luxe. Dans le plan stratégique « Vision 2030 » du prince héritier Mohamed Ben Salmane, le tourisme, dont fait partie le tourisme islamique, est un pivot de la politique de diversification de l’économie. L’objectif, très ambitieux, est d'accueillir à terme 30 millions de visiteurs annuels. Problème, les investissements attendus, notamment étrangers, prennent du retard. En attendant, les centaines de milliers de travailleurs dépendant de l'activité générée par les pèlerinages attendent, anxieux, la fin de la crise. EN BREF Accords signés ce dimanche entre l'Ouganda, la Tanzanie et deux compagnies pétrolières pour enfin exploiter le brut du Lac Albert en Ouganda Après de longues tractations, ces réserves découvertes en 2006 vont pouvoir être opérées par les géants français Total et le chinois CNOOC. La construction d'un oléoduc transfrontalier chauffé de 1 400 km pourra être lancée entre la région du Lac Albert et le port tanzanien de Tanga. De quoi produire jusqu'à 230 000 barils par jours pendant trente ans. La fin du pétrole attendra. Colère bien-sûr des ONG environnementales qui alertent depuis des années sur les risques pour la nature et les communautés locales.

In this first episode of the newly formed podcast format, Emma and Sanjay discuss the new setup for the podcast. Over the course of the year, Emma and Sanjay will travel to different parts of Sweden to see how different types of people find communities and home in their neighbourhoods in Sweden.
