Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, a retired U.S. Army Ranger and former psychology professor at West Point, is widely known for his book On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society. The book delves into the emotional and psychological impact that killing has on soldiers, and it introduced the concept of "killology"—the study of how taking a life affects the human mind. Grossman suggests that humans naturally resist killing, and that military training has evolved to help soldiers overcome this resistance. His research has significantly influenced military and police training programs, although some of his theories have sparked debate among scholars and critics.EPISODE CHAPTERS00:00 Introduction and Background of Lt. Dave Grossman was born in Frankfurt Germany and is a retired Lt Colonel in the Army. He is a US Army Ranger, paratrooper, and former West Point Psychology Professor. He has a Black Belt in Hojutsu and has been inducted into the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame. In 1995, he wrote On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society which has sold over half a million copies and is required reading both in the Marine Corps and FBI. Since his retirement in 1998, Colonel Grossman is now a NY Times best-selling author and has written a number of other books including On Combat, Warrior Mindset, Bulletproof Marriage, and On Spiritual Combat to name a few. He is one of our nation's leading trainers for military, law enforcement, mental health providers, and school safety organizations including working with mental health professionals after school shootings. He has been cited by the President, had articles published in the Harvard Journal of Law, and been an expert witness in state and federal courts and has testified before congressional committees. He has spoken out against video game violence, done deep research on PTSD, and coined and trademarked the term sheepdog. In this wide ranging interview, we talk at length about what it means to be a warrior for God, training in weapons and preparation, and the Sheepdog concept Dave famously trademarked in his book On Killing. We also talk about gun violence, school shootings, PTSD, and the psychology of killing. Dave talks at length about his love for the Lord and the role he sees for Biblically masculine males. This is a fascinating conversation with a man who is truly a psychological expert in combat, killing, and violence. He has some fascinating insights that there are few other people in the world qualified to bring. We continue our deep dive into self-proclaimed "killologist" Dave Grossman and his foundational work On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society (Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1995). This time around, we take a closer look at Dave Grossman's research process and learn how, shockingly, the sources that aren't based on a World War II journalist who made some stuff up are also pretty bad.  Topics discussed include: Kevin's run-in with Soldier of Fortune,  Andy's natural aversion to giving Dave Grossman money, Dave's looking out for the real victims (spoiler alert: it's white supremacists and fascists), a brief interlude about the 1994 Winter Olympics, and the ongoing debate over who stole valor. Today, we tackle Dave's central argument--that as many as 85% of American soldiers in World War II outright refused to fire their guns, which led the Army to trick its soldiers into becoming killing machines--by looking at his one source: the work of Samuel Lyman Marshall. Topics discussed include: The epic tale of a jet setting adventurer and war correspondent (or is it?), Dave Grossman is (shockingly) not a diligent researcher, what happens when historians make up their sources, the great debate over who stole valor, and the gang offers some exciting new dieting advice. In a world filled with war and violence, how should Christians interpret Jesus' teachings in the Sermon on the Mount such as “Resist not evil” (Matthew 5:39) and “To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also” (Luke 6:29, NKJV)? Are Christians supposed to stand aside while evil people destroy their homes, kill their family and neighbors, and steal their possessions?Dr. Bernard shares his thoughts on this difficult question and how Christians might respond when threatened with physical violence and potential harm. He also discusses how the Bible's teachings apply to participation in modern warfare and capital punishment. In this episode, Dr. Bernard references the book On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society by Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman. If you enjoy this podcast, leave a rating and a review on iTunes or your preferred podcast platform. Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel and renown author Dave Grossman essentially created the field of killology. His books On Killing and On Combat have made an entire generation of military, law enforcement, and first responders more ready for the stressful, sometimes violent situations they face. Long after his active duty career, Dave has continued to teach the stress-response techniques outlined in his books, traveling to hundreds of bases, posts, and precincts over the years. In this episode, you discover what happens in the body during combat. Visual distortion, auditory exclusion, memory distortion, vasoconstriction, and loss of bladder control are all physiological effects that Soldiers and law enforcement personnel experience in extreme stress but rarely prepare for. Dave Grossman's books and instruction prepare combatants and protectors for the challenge of face-to-face violent stress and infuse confidence in those who have never experienced it before. If you have a team who might face violent stress one day, they need to hear this conversation. Personally, I can tell you that reading On Killing and On Combat made me more prepared for my own combat experience. I invite you to do the same. Read more about Dave Grossman's work at Killology Research Group and check out his books On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society and On Combat, The Psychology and Physiology of Deadly Conflict in War and in Peace. He is one of the most sought after experts in the field of human aggression, the causes of violence and violent crimes. He is a former West Point psychology professor, Professor of Military Science, and Army Ranger. Using his experiences and knowledge of killing in war, the psychological costs of war, the causes of violent crimes, and the process of healing those who fall victim to violence, Col. Grossman coined a new field of scientific study termed “killology”. Col. Grossman is the author of the books On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society and On Combat: The Psychology and Physiology of Deadly Conflict in War and in Peace. Col. Grossman has presented at more than one hundred colleges and universities worldwide and is highly sought after for training law enforcement and first responders at the state and federal level throughout the United States and the worldwide. In this episode, we discuss the following questions and topics with Col. Grossman: How did you begin your research in the psychology and understanding of killing in war? Explain reality-based training and how it helps soldiers and first responders perform during high-stress situations. Is there a connection between how physically fit a soldier is and his or her ability to perform and recover from high stress situations? What are your suggestions for mentally and physically preparing soldiers and first responders for the job? What are your suggestions for those trying to recover from having to kill in the line of duty? For more information on Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, check out the following: http://www.killology.com/

Psychology professor Lt. Col. Dave Grossman talks about his new book "On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society". He maintains that it is inherent in us to resist killing our own species and that research has proven that many soldiers engaged in face-to-face combat found it difficult to kill. Soldiers can be trained however, to overcome that resistance. Some veterans are still plagued with guilt about taking another man's life, but this guilt can be eased if they are assured that what they did was right. Addressing the rise in civilian murders, he believes that part of the reason is that children are becoming desensitized to violence because they are associating the bombardment of graphic images by the media with pleasure. (Originally aired March 1996).
