(Erkenntnistheorie) Was darf ich hoffen? (Religionsphilosophie) Was soll ich tun? Have you heard people say that humans used to live in balance with nature? […] There was a balance. It wasn't because humans lived in balance with nature. Humans died in balance with nature. What does "Use Enough Gun" mean? Especially when hunting elk, moose, and bison or tough game such as Tahr or feral cattle in New Zealand and Sambar Stag in Australia? A phrase originally quoined by legendary author and hunter Robert Ruark, "Use Enough Gun" means what it says. This episode, we're joined by terminal ballistics specialist Nathan Foster, who has dedicated his life to the study of how bullets kill and what cartridges and bullets are most effective for various tasks. We examine the "small-bore for big-game" trend, and Foster explains where it began and why it's so misleading, and addresses the grim reality behind using inadequate caliber and bullet weight. Foster's company Terminal Ballistics Research specializes in hunting applications and the cartridges and bullets best suited, but has often been tasked with performing the forensics and analysis that lead to informed decisions by special military and law enforcement branches in multiple nations. You might say he knows his stuff, and has the decades worth of research and data readily available to back up the wisdom he imparts. FRIENDS! Whether you want it or not, we return to our long series on the self-proclaimed "killologist" Dave Grossman, and we finally get to Dave's entry into the violent video game fray as he peddled his killological wares in the wake of the March 24, 1998, Westside Middle School shooting, a less talked about school shooting that happened to take place in Dave's hometown and propel him from rando adjunct to media-anointed expert. Friends, the time has come for another Ask Didact Anything brain-dump. This instalment addresses a wide range of reader questions, starting with a fascinating article sent to me by a reader, and continuing on through various points of interest raised by members of my Telegram channel. (Join for the news feed - stay for the bantz.) The list of questions is as follows: LRFotS AuntRat asks for my thoughts on an excellent article by The Z-Man on the horrors of the new kind of mechanised warfare we see in Banderastan; Ambergris asks me to play a kind of "Desert Island Discs" with respect to the bands I would tolerate listening to for the rest of my life; Our native Kraut, MK, asks for my opinion on the best places to live with industrialised First-World environments, where a young buck can start a family - Germanic-speaking areas preferred, of course; LRFotS Kapios - a veteran from the very earliest days of the old Didact's Reach Blogspot site - asks how I might consider setting up a content-creation business online with a commercial partner; The hilarious SupremeCannon - he of the hysterical "Tyroneiums" moniker - asks a serious question about which out of the FUSA, the EUSSR, the UK, or China, will collapse first from colossal financial phuckwittery; SupremeCannon again with another question about how Civil War 2.0 will unfold in the FUSA, and whether 2024 will be the year in which it will happen; Many thanks to all of my channel members and subscribers for their most excellent questions. I hope I have answered them thoroughly and thoughtfully, and welcome your comments both here and on Telegram. Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Kate Lynch, Elford Stevens, and Phil Thomas. We finally close the book on On Killing and three whole months on Lt. Col. Dave Grossman by taking a closer look into more of his profoundly sad so-called accomplishments and wrap up by a look at the popular reception to Dave's first book.Topics discussed include: Dave Grossman: martial arts master? Kevin is a master of Gamekata, the martial art of the video game. The strange case of the guy with three doctorates, and the kinds of people who really took to Grossman's rhetoric in On Killing (spoiler: it's exactly the kinds of people you'd think would like it). Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Kate Lynch, Elford Stevens, and Phil Thomas. Sorry, folks, but it's one more month on everyone's "favorite" "killologist" Dave Grossman. This time, we shift away from Dave's debut book On Killing to some of his other alleged accomplishments (Spoiler alert: they're not much better than his book warning everyone about the "Virus of Violence").Topics discussed include: On Killing's tepid reception, Dave wants everyone to know he's been to mountains and deserts, and is Dave Grossman a furry? Plus, more about Kevin's experience as a failed academic, and Scandalous Games "earns" a Pulitzer Prize nomination. Plus, we share an exciting Halloween treat.Theme Music: Occam's Sikhwee by Sikh Knowledge (Free Music Archive: https://bit.ly/33G4sLO), used under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US (https://bit.ly/33JXogQ) More info, including show notes and sources at http://scandalousgamespodcast.wordpress.com.
Have you ever heard someone go about explaining the two sides to an argument, only to later discover they're involved in one side of the controversy? While a situation like that isn't exactly the view-from-above fallacy, it closely resembles the rhetorical strategy of one. Not directly a logical fallacy, the speaker presents themselves as an objective observer looking down on the battlefield between two subjective parties. While doing so, they make normative claims about the environment as if they had no impact or binding influence over his ability to observe. Gun Culture is regularly faced with this type of rhetoric, and we dive into both a recent article published by Relevant Magazine, as well as the worthwhile read "On Killing" by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman as this fallacy is sometimes referred to as the Psychologist's Fallacy. “If it works in the stress of combat, if it's a lesson learned in that toxic realm of combat, if it works there, then it can work in a lot of other places.” “All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost.” - J.R.R. "One casualty is one too many, every life is precious. We're preserving and protecting lives like nothing we've ever seen before. But now we have to apply those lessons to our loved ones and to ourselves in these desperately and astoundingly violent times.” “You are a sovereign in your home. In your castle.” LT. Col. Dave Grossman is back again to take the topic of violence discussed in the previous episode to the next level. Preparation. The murder rates throughout the world are under-represented. We all see the violence happening at home and abroad, it's being reported daily but it doesn't tell the whole picture. Of course, the world is too big for everything to be reported and no one wants that anyway. But the real issue is, on a macro scale, the violence statistics aren't accurate and that leaves men, the protectors, at a disadvantage because they might not realize the need to develop the skills needed to save lives. As always, this episode is about taking ownership and exercising your sovereignty. Dave and Nicky discuss two very simple and yet very powerful techniques that have been saving lives for decades. So simple, the tech can be bought on Amazon. Dave Grossman literally wrote the book On Killing, compiling countless interviews with soldiers and law enforcement people who've killed serving their countries. He served 24 years in the military as a paratrooper, Sargent, Ranger, and Westpoint psychology professor. He also wrote On Killing, On Spiritual Combat, On Hunting. He also trains law enforcement throughout the world. Grossmanonthruth.com Also in this episode: Tourniquet - SWAT-T on Amazon. “Not all that is gold doth glitter. Not all those who wander are lost. The old that is strong does not wither and the deep roots are not touched by the frost.” - J.R.R. Tolkien “Giving someone a weapon implies your trust in the maturity and responsible behaviour of the recipient. It speaks of your desire for their safety and well being. It communicates your mutual aspiration to make the world a better and safer place, by putting this tool in the hands of a virtuous and trustworthy person. But remember, in the end, you are the weapon. Everything else is just a tool.” - Paraphrased from a quote by Rocky Warren Men are symbols of strength. We're protectors of our sovereignty, our principles, our families and loved ones. As Dave Grossman says in today's episode, “we're about protecting, preserving, and conserving what's good.” That means learning how to be a dangerous man in dangerous times. A dangerous man fighting the good fight. But this isn't something to approach casually and weapons, or ‘being a weapon' as Dave puts it, is a matter of great responsibility. Dave Grossman comes to us today to help us see the truth of what's happening in our own streets and on our battlefields and how a man can prepare himself to join the battle. He literally wrote the book On Killing, compiling countless interviews with soldiers and law enforcement people who've killed serving their countries. Greg Drobny started writing in the early days of “blogging” as a full time contributor to The Rhino Den, an element of the Ranger Up company. Today he is one of the most prolific contributors to The Havok Journal. His piece “The Sheepdog Analogy Is Deeply Flawed” is the focus of our discussion. The Sheepdog concept was first formed by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman in his book “On Killing”. His theory is that everyone falls into one of three categories; the majority of the population are “sheep”. Those who prey on the general population are “Wolves” and those who protect the general population are “Sheepdogs” – members of our military and first responder communities. Greg was inspired to study in the fields of history and psychology after reading Grossman's book while training to be an Army Ranger. In his article he calls the Sheepdog “harmfully simplistic” because people, like life, are dynamic. He cites the examples of the grandmother who dispatched a “wolf” trying to break into her home. He also discusses how people who attempt to don the mantel of “sheepdogs” but are untrained can cause more harm than good. Greg was inspired to join the Army at 28 years old following the 9/11 attacks. During boot camp he was teased by his fellow soldiers warning him that because of his age he was going to break his hip. Sure enough, 2 days before completing Ranger training that is precisely what happened. He eventually did earn his tan beret as a member of the Ranger training brigade. Greg was deployed in Iraq as a psychological operations team chief. After leaving the military he spent some time working in politics, a field he says was very similar to his military psy-ops activities. Greg currently works as the Student Recruitment Manager for Code Platoon. Code Platoon addresses the issue of Veteran unemployment by providing high intensity “boot camp” training in the field of software engineering.

I am not exaggerating when I say that https://www.amazon.com/High-Risk-Soldier-Trauma-Triumph-ebook/dp/B01CN4KNIY (High Risk Soldier:Trauma and Triumph in the Global War on Terror )may be the best first-person military memoir I've ever read. Culled from Terron Wharton's personal journal and emails home, it captures so many sights, sounds, and emotions that come with a deployment that you will feel like you're there – but even more than that, you will also read descriptions that you never have heard articulated so simply and so thoroughly. One example that moved me was: “You never really know how much a situation has affected you until you're no longer neck deep in it, until you're no longer looking over your shoulder, until your mind finally registers "Hey, relax, no one is trying to kill you." You get a massive outpouring of tension... followed by relief... and then followed by guilt. Finally, the strangest thing of all: you start to miss it. You find you feel more awkward back in this alternate reality than in your "normal" world, and you wonder what that means. You find things start to itch just under the surface. You miss the rumble of gunpowder and cordite, and the throb of the pack. You find it all seems a little out of place back here.” Terron also has an officer's eye for innovation and hints at prescriptions for systemic change. In our interview, I pushed to see what changes he would like to see to make mental health treatment less stigmatized. A sizeable hat-tip to Marshall McGurk, Ayman Kafel and https://projectsapient.podbean.com/ (Project Sapient) who brought the book to my attention - and to Ayman for co-hosting this episode with me. Terron Wharton was born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His chosen military path began with joining his high school's JROTC program. His mother was not thrilled, but agreed as long as Terron kept his GPA above a 3.0. He first learned about West Point while in JROTC and became the first in his family to attend a service academy. He graduated in 2005 with a degree in International Relations and was assigned to Armor Branch, his first choice. In October 2006 Terron deployed to FOB Rustamiyah in Baghdad, Iraq as a Tank Platoon Leader, leading 16 men and four tanks in combat. This 15 month deployment occurred during "The Surge", a period marked by high levels of violence and viewed as a turning point in the Iraq War. Terron deployed two other times as part of the Global War on Terror. The second was to Baghdad again, this time as a staff officer to one of the largest Coalition bases in Iraq, Victory Base Complex. The third deployment was to Kandahar City, Afghanistan, during which he led over 100 Soldiers as a Troop Commander and lived with over 400 Afghan Police. I met Lt. Col. Dave Grossman in 2002 at a police conference. I attended as a participant after being involved in an officer involved shooting. Lt. Col. Dave Grossman was the presenter and he shared his philosophy of the phycological edge surrounding "police shootings." . Lt. Col. Dave Grossman (retired) is the author of a dozen books including best seller ‘On Killing‘ and ‘On Combat‘. These books deal with the psychological effects of killing and war on soldiers. He was a Professor of Psychology at West Point, a former infantryman, paratrooper, and graduate of the Army's Ranger School. Grossman stands alongside men such as Massad Ayoob, Jeff Cooper, and John Farnham, as a person who has begun conversations and helped laid the groundwork that the modern science of lethal force encounters rests on. He is also known for his popularizing of the term ‘sheepdog' referring to protectors. Parents, Lt. Col. Dave Grossman will shed some light on the truth of cell phones and how video games play a role in violence in our children. His insight into gaming and social media is alarming and should not be taken lightly. It is time to pick a side, are you willing to protect your children at all costs? Come Chase the Vase with Lt. Col. Dave Grossman and I explore tips for our home and communities. Please like, share and comment on this podcast.
