Why is it that even the most well intentioned, well thought out reforms for policing fail? At the heart of policing is a culture that teaches police to see threats around every corner. Today, Hunter sat down with sociology professor, Michael Sierra-Arévalo, to discuss his newest book The Danger Imperative: Violence, Death, and the Soul of Policing to try and understand all that contributes to that culture and how it impacts police practices. Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Kate Lynch and Phil Thomas. We've gone too far to turn back now, as we continue our long look into Dave Grossman and why people should not listen to him. Today we continue our deep dive into Dave's tactics by seeing how his "killological" philosophy made its way into the State House and the courthouse through anti-gaming legislation and wrongful death lawsuits against the games industry.Topics discussed include: The epic bromance that was Dave Grossman and Jack Thompson, the debut of a new segment called "Scandalous Games Theatre," and all the ways politicians uncritically parrot the ideas of a pretend academic.Theme Music: Occam's Sikhwee by Sikh Knowledge (Free Music Archive: https://bit.ly/33G4sLO), used under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US (https://bit.ly/33JXogQ) More info, including show notes and sources at http://scandalousgamespodcast.wordpress.com.

We continue our deep-dive into self-proclaimed "killologist" Dave Grossman seeing how he became a media-anointed expert on video game violence in the wake of a school shooting in his home town, and how Dave managed to insert himself into future violent video game conversations in the wake of mass shootings. Topics discussed include: Did a school shooter go from average teen to deadly marksman by playing too much DOOM? Whether you want it or not, we return to our long series on the self-proclaimed "killologist" Dave Grossman, and we finally get to Dave's entry into the violent video game fray as he peddled his killological wares in the wake of the March 24, 1998, Westside Middle School shooting, a less talked about school shooting that happened to take place in Dave's hometown and propel him from rando adjunct to media-anointed expert. Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Kate Lynch, Elford Stevens, and Phil Thomas. We finally close the book on On Killing and three whole months on Lt. Col. Dave Grossman by taking a closer look into more of his profoundly sad so-called accomplishments and wrap up by a look at the popular reception to Dave's first book.Topics discussed include: Dave Grossman: martial arts master? Kevin is a master of Gamekata, the martial art of the video game. The strange case of the guy with three doctorates, and the kinds of people who really took to Grossman's rhetoric in On Killing (spoiler: it's exactly the kinds of people you'd think would like it). Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Kate Lynch, Elford Stevens, and Phil Thomas. Sorry, folks, but it's one more month on everyone's "favorite" "killologist" Dave Grossman. This time, we shift away from Dave's debut book On Killing to some of his other alleged accomplishments (Spoiler alert: they're not much better than his book warning everyone about the "Virus of Violence").Topics discussed include: On Killing's tepid reception, Dave wants everyone to know he's been to mountains and deserts, and is Dave Grossman a furry? Plus, more about Kevin's experience as a failed academic, and Scandalous Games "earns" a Pulitzer Prize nomination. Plus, we share an exciting Halloween treat.Theme Music: Occam's Sikhwee by Sikh Knowledge (Free Music Archive: https://bit.ly/33G4sLO), used under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US (https://bit.ly/33JXogQ) More info, including show notes and sources at http://scandalousgamespodcast.wordpress.com.
Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Kate Lynch, Phil Thomas, and Andy Hunter. We continue our deep dive into self-proclaimed "killologist" Dave Grossman and his foundational work On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society (Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1995). This time around, we take a closer look at Dave Grossman's research process and learn how, shockingly, the sources that aren't based on a World War II journalist who made some stuff up are also pretty bad. Topics discussed include: Kevin's run-in with Soldier of Fortune, Andy's natural aversion to giving Dave Grossman money, Dave's looking out for the real victims (spoiler alert: it's white supremacists and fascists), a brief interlude about the 1994 Winter Olympics, and the ongoing debate over who stole valor. Plus, some more rounds of Pokémon or Prescription Drug! For a look at the history of Rhodesia: check out Well There's Your Problem's episode - https://youtu.be/7dtJGRIWEls?si=2lJ2S3fFTAwVcsVy. We continue our deep dive into self-proclaimed "killologist" Dave Grossman and his 1995 book On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society (Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1995). Today, we tackle Dave's central argument--that as many as 85% of American soldiers in World War II outright refused to fire their guns, which led the Army to trick its soldiers into becoming killing machines--by looking at his one source: the work of Samuel Lyman Marshall. Topics discussed include: The epic tale of a jet setting adventurer and war correspondent (or is it?), Dave Grossman is (shockingly) not a diligent researcher, what happens when historians make up their sources, the great debate over who stole valor, and the gang offers some exciting new dieting advice. We continue our deep dive into self-proclaimed "killologist" Dave Grossman and his 1995 book On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society (Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1995), dissecting his claims that America is in the midst of a hellish Purge style world of violent teens who have been activated by watching too many horror movies and playing one too many light gun games.Topics discussed include: Dave Grossman has never watched a horror movie or played a video game (but that won't stop him from having strong opinions anyway), whether Rodney King was a serial killer, Kevin has a problem with A Clockwork Orange, the gang learns there actually is no crime, and Andy offers more choices between Pokémon and prescription drugs. For more on possible theories behind America's dramatic crime decrease since the 1990s, check out: Dana Lind and German Lopez, “16 Theories for Why Crime Plummeted in the US,” Vox, May 20, 2015, https://www.vox.com/2015/2/13/8032231/crime-drop. Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Kate Lynch, Elford Stephens, and Andy Hunter. In honor of our second full year of doing this show, we start a deep dive into a guy who may be the single most influential figure in the violent video game discourse over the last 30-odd years: Lt. Col. Dave Grossman. Starting our six-month (don't worry, we'll take breaks along the way) deep dive into the self-proclaimed killology expert. Today, we start with Dave's early life and start looking at his most influential work on how we thing about video game violence: On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society (Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1995), and how a lot of the violent video game discourse is based on a bad book.Topics discussed include: The horrifying thought of soldiers not killing people (and how we allegedly "fixed" it), some sketchy wheelings and dealings among our panelists, Dave Grossman warns those nasty video games are teaching kids to kill (citation needed), and Andy tests the gang's knowledge on Pokémon and prescription drugs. For more on the evolution of the public perception of the American soldier between World War II and the Vietnam War, check out Andrew J, Huebner, The Warrior Image: Soldiers in American Culture from the Second World War to the Vietnam Era (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2008: https://www.amazon.com/Warrior-Image-Soldiers-American-Culture/dp/0807858382. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma host Rosie Collington, Ph.D candidate at University College London, to discuss her recent book The Big Con: How The Consulting Industry Weakens Our Businesses, Infantilizes Our Governments, And Warps Our Economies, co-authored with Mariana Mazzucato. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the debt ceiling fight, Biden's plummeting polling (and why he still fares better than the GOP's candidates), Minnesota's gig work bill, Manchin sinking Julie Su's candidacy, the NAACP travel advisory for Florida, the devastating death of an 8-year-old in border custody, and failing US intelligence at home and abroad, before diving into the Democratic party's (and particularly their leadership's) insistence on never having any real power. Rosie Collington then joins as she parses through the massive state of the management consulting industry in the US, with agencies like McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, and Bain, working for both the regulatory (political) and industrial sides, and conning the public into believing they actually have a massive impact on the economy. She walks Sam and Emma through the evolution of the consulting-industrial complex, with the introduction of the Reaganomics of the 1980s in both reducing spending on welfare and shifting the distribution of it onto private industry, and the neoliberal establishment cementing this shift over the next couple of decades, with private companies slowly taking over not just the implementation, but the development of public policy in the US. After parsing through the rollout of the ACA under Obama, as well as stories like the East Palestine derailment and McKinsey's role in the opioid crisis, as key examples of the failure of consulting's control over the government, from the conflicts-of-interest in creates to the obscuration of responsibility for our democratic officials, Collington wraps up by tackling the role of elite institutions in laundering the reputation of consulting industries, and explores what actions the US government can take to protect democracy. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into AI's role in the WGA and SAF strikes, with some help from Tesla stans, Moms for Liberty exemplifies the GOP's exterminationist rhetoric, and Hitchen's Ghost dives into his personal experiences with Killology experts. Ash from Southern Illinois reflects on the criminalization of a teacher's trans acceptance, Dez from NJ discusses unionizing his workplace, and Emma reflects on mistakes made in reporting on a recent “Karen” story. DeSantis continues to flounder socially, and Tim Pool acts in his role as the final body in the reactionary right's human centipede of (dis)information, plus, your calls and IMs! Lt Col Dave Grossman the founder of Grossman On Truth, a former US Army Infantry Officer and Ranger, West Point Psychology Professor, and the founder of killology. Killology is a relatively new field of scientific study focused on the psychology of having to take a life on the battlefield, which not only includes war zones abroad, but the one many of our law enforcement brothers and sisters face every day. He has written numerous books and publications on the topic like his well known books On Combat, and On Killing and is globally known as the subject matter expert on dealing with violence in a violent world. He has testified before congress, been an expert witness in high profile cases like the Timothy McVeigh trial and has trained countless mental health, law enforcement, and military professionals globally. He has advised presidents on topics revolving around violent video games and media and is also, and most importantly, a man of God. His book On Spiritual Combat provides insight into the spiritual war raging around us all the time, and how we can equip ourselves through the word to fight this battle as warriors in Christ.

Dave Grossman is a former Army Ranger officer, expert trainer and best-selling author. His book, On Killing and On Combat were essential pieces of literature for me prior to heading to Afghanistan. He contends that our society is very sick and are fed a constant feed of violence and murder that creates social instability and chaos. This week I'm joined by author and trainer Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, who shared about the effects of violence in our society and the psychology of killing. This fascinating discussion makes for quite a heavy episode, but the information is so important. We dive into why we do certain things and how we can move, through understanding the darkness, into the light. After visiting places like Auschwitz and The Killing Fields, I understand why we need to learn how to ensure these things never happen again.

Living in a time with great unrest, we all need to examine our ability to survive. Whether it be a natural disaster, a violent encounter, or a silent attack like sleep deprivation, post traumatic stress, or the guilt and shame of our past we all need to take inventory as to the skills and knowledge we have to press on during difficult times. My guest today, is (Ret.) Lt. Col. Dave Grossman who has spent his life preparing for the unknown. He served in the military for 24 years as an Army Ranger, and Paratrooper. Additionally, he was a professor of psychology at West Point. He has been retired for almost as long as he was in the military and still travels the majority of the year training military and law enforcement personnel. Lt. Col. Grossman studied the psychology of killing and combat and wanted to better understand the topic and educate warriors about what to expect when involved in violent encounters like war and protecting the communities of this Nation. He is the author of On Killing, On Combat, Assassination Generation, and the children's book, Sheepdogs: Meet our Nations Warriors. Lt. Col. Grossman is a man of faith, and two of his more recent books, On Spiritual Combat and Bulletproof Marriage address matters or faith and spirituality. The conversation covers a number of topics to include, increasing murder rates, the conditioning of violence in children, becoming a sheepdog, hope for those dealing with trauma, and the epidemic of sleep deprivation.Killology Website Lt. TWJ welcomes back Lt. Col. David Grossman (US Army, Ret.) for the second half of conversation that speaks to his experiences, and equips people to deal with a serious issue, which may surprise some: sleep deprivation. When studied carefully, this issue is actually revealed to be a deadly epidemic gripping our world – and specifically our military – today. Lt. Col. David Grossman (US Army, Ret.) is an author and law enforcement trainer who has specialized in the study of the psychology of killing on the human psyche. Since 1998, he has been on the road almost 300 days a year, as one of our nation's leading trainers for military, law enforcement, mental health providers, and school safety organizations. Following his retirement from the Army, Grossman founded the Killology Research Group to educate law enforcement officers and soldiers how to improve outcomes in lethal encounters. Grossman is best known for his police training program, based on the self-coined study of "killology", which aims to reduce officers' psychological inhibition to kill suspects. His widely acclaimed books, such as On Killing and On Combat, as well as his brand new book, On Spiritual Combat: 30 Missions for Victorious Warfare, are available now on Amazon. Hey! It's the second part of the conversation with Angelique Tomeo and Sabrina Ryan-Helton of the Bail Project. If episode one was about talking about the system and how it destroys people's lives and weakens the fabric of society itself, episode two is more about how we might fight back in the short term by helping bail as many folks as possible out so they can actually claim their rights and fight their cases. Just a reminder: there's a supplement to these episodes outlining what happened to crime rates when Spokane let a bunch of people out of jail due to COVID. Really gives some extra urgency to the work.If you feel moved by this work, make sure to ask to join the Bail Project Spokane's Facebook community. Lots of information and solidarity happens in that space. And at Sabrina's request: it's not too late to sign the anti-Killology training petitions. There are two. This week we look at Sidney Lumet’s NYPD corruption trilogy, starting with Serpico (1973) starring Al Pacino and based on the experiences of Frank Serpico. We finish with Q & A (1990) starring Nick Nolte and Timothy Hutton and based on the book by NY state Supreme Court judge Edwin Torres. 16 Blocks (2006) by Richard Donner gets a tangential mention. Also: The Negotiator (1998) and Date Night (2010). While much of America is on fire, and trust in police is shaken to the core, activists have discovered that Spokane law enforcement has invited Dave Grossman -- the inventor of "Killology," a widely discredited training technique -- to train our local police. His ideas are flippant, callous and more concerned with making sure cops know how to beat a shooting than how to help those in need. These are not de-escalation techniques. This episode showcases audio of Grossman's lectures and makes the case that he should not be welcome in Spokane.Among Grossman's more infamous pupils: the guy who killed Philando Castile in Minneapolis in 2016, a precursor killing that laid the groundwork for the nationwide unrest that sprang up after the murder of George Floyd. PART 1 of 2 - due to a recording glitch this file was split into two separate segments. Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman , U.S. Army (Ret.) is the Director, Killology Research Group, an author, a speaker, and a former West Point Psychology Professor. All of this geared toward this one goal: We must protect the children who have been entrusted to our care. Killology is the scholarly study of the destructive act, just as sexology is the scholarly study of the procreative act. In particular, killology focuses on the reactions of healthy people in killing circumstances (such as police and military in combat) and the factors that enable and restrain killing in these situations. On Gun Freedom Radio, Col. Grossman discussed the ever more addictive qualities of modern video games and the negative impact they can have on not only adults but very much on our children and teens. Also, that disarming citizens in the name of “protecting society” is to create a society of empowered criminals. Further, he discussed the "contagion effect" that over-reporting by the Network News on any one event can cause, even when the name of the murderer is not used. Finally, Col. Grossman offered some helpful resources for parents, churches, and schools including FASTERSavesLives, which he will be discussing at a Safe Schools & Healthy Students Seminar, hosted by the AzCDL Foundation, on September 14, 2019 in Phoenix, AZ.

"We have learned more about the psychology and physiology of combat in the last 50 years than in the previous 5,000 years put together." - LT. COL. Dave Grossman I've known Dave Grossman for decades. From long before 9-11. A mutual passion for studying violence, specifically, the link between physiology and psychology, cemented our friendship. Dave was the first person to really study it in a scholarly fashion and has authored several books on the subject. We discuss so many things on this call from violence to sleeping habits, his knowledge-base is astounding. Listening to Dave is always thought-provoking. Enjoy this talk. Tony Dave has five patents to his name, has published four novels, two children's books, and six non-fiction books to include his “perennial bestseller” On Killing (with over half a million copies sold), and a New York Times best-selling book co-authored with Glenn Beck. He is a US Army Ranger, a paratrooper, and a former West Point Psychology Professor. He has a Black Belt in Hojutsu, the martial art of the firearm, and has been inducted into the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame. www.killogy.com KILLOLOGY, (n): The scholarly study of the destructive act, just as sexology is the scholarly study of the procreative act. On Start the Week Kirsty Wark asks what it is to be a man, and to belong to a tribe. Thomas Page McBee has sought answers as he's transitioned from female to male, and explored how far the violent men of his youth are models of masculinity. Fatherhood and aggression take centre stage in Gary Owen's play, Killology, in which he's created a video game that allows players to live out their darkest fantasies. The poet Kayo Chingonyi moved to Britain when he was a child and in his debut collection he translates the rites of passage of his native Zambia to his new home. In the TV drama Ackley Bridge, filmmaker Penny Woolcock imagines a new school that throws together two communities, segregated along ethnic lines, in a fictional Yorkshire mill town.
