How did an eBay search lead to the discovery of a lost classic of comics? How can art help us build a better America? Artist and teacher Keith Mayerson joins the show to talk about co-editing the amazing new book, Frank Johnson: Secret Pioneer of American Comics, Vol. 1 (Fantagraphics) and his multi-decade "wordless novel" in paintings, My American Dream (Karma). We get into how Frank Johnson made thousands of pages of comics in private, never published, and may have created the first American comic-book in history, whether he constitutes an Outsider Artist, how his creative legacy contrasts with Henry Darger's, and what it means to make a lifelong body of work with no sense or expectation of a readership. We also get into Keith's My American Dream project, its roots in 9/11 & the GWBush era, how his paintings play off of each other like panels in a comic (and how the curation of art exhibitions is a form of comics), the mash-up of key cultural figures of modern America, his art-subject trinity of James Dean, Elvis, and Keanu Reeves (and his story of meeting Keanu), how My American Dream works to synthesize aspects of Warhol & Rembrandt (& Haring), and the vitality of his painting of Kermit the Frog on a bicycle and the significance of the Muppets in his vision of America. Plus we discuss Keith's art & comics upbringing, the process of building comics programs at SVA and USC, his cult classic queer horror graphic novel with Dennis Cooper, the artistic act of suturing in to his subjects, why the job of art is keeping hope alive, how he felt when he found a parallel, secret history of comics taking place solely in one person's mind, and a lot more. Henry Darger is one of the most profitable outsider artists out there. Unfortunately he didn't reap the benefit of that while he was alive, spending much of it in abject poverty. He was compelled to make and write art during the time he was not working as a janitor or dishwasher. His artwork dealt with themes of child abuse and violence, subjects very familiar with Darger when he was put in an asylum at the age of 12. Strange Country cohost Beth with special pinch (or pitch) hitter Terry discuss this artist and why work gets recognition after they're gone. Theme music: Big White Lie by A Cast of Thousands. Jim McDowell, aka "The Black Potter," is a gallery-level, outsider artist working in the ceramic tradition of face jugs inspired by his enslaved African ancestors. In this passionate & electric episode we learn about what pottery was like in colonial & slave times: the spiritual side of African & voodoo pottery; utilitarian vessels on the plantation; digging clay & building kilns; face jugs [aka ugly jugs]; & a renowned, literate slave potter named David Drake. Jim then tells a horripilating story about the making of an emotionally torturous jug he titled, "Slave." This opens powerful conversations about getting one's demons out & the artist's role, channeling ancestors & building generational wealth. For a visual check out a gallery of Jim's powerful face jugs & watch him on History Detectives. For more information check out his website. As a bipolar artist in Lewisville, Texas, resident Charles McDowell merges medication and art therapy through his mastermind group, MyPolarLife. Charles explains that his artwork is inspired by the complexity of the human mind and the void between mental illness and mental clarity.Podcast host Christopher Miller and Charles discuss what it means to be in a flow where you give up expectations and keep yourself “straight.” Art inspires people, and Charles believes that the artist will be successful if one person is encouraged.Charles and his group choose their languaging carefully, always remembering the positive gift in their mental situation. Everyone's experience of mental health is different. Learning to embrace your current mental situation is a central theme of his recent work. As spiritual artists, we bring “all of ourselves” to our art.According to Charles, mental illness is overthinking. He recommends “pouring yourself into your talent” and focusing on others are two ways to get out of yourself and deal with mental challenges. In addition to MyPolarLife, Charles strives to destigmatize the conversation around mental health by participating as an active member of the Society of Depressed Artists (SODA), located in Dallas, Texas. He also participates in events that provide a portion of his sales to the non-profit, Foundation 45, a health awareness group that offers services in Dallas-Ft. Worth. You can see Charles and his work at the Coral Reef Coffee Company in Lewisville, Texas, on April 7 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. A portionCharles' mixed-media paintings can be seen on Instagram @polar seeker. The private world he created was fascinating, horrific, and ultimately influential beyond his lifetime.Jared Logan is a writer and performer whose comedy albums My Brave Battle and The Twilight Door are available to stream. Artist Michelangelo Lovelace's paintings depict the soul of the streets: real life in America. We talk about being raised to hustle, belt vs. extension cord whoopings, meeting his first wife (who is also his fourth wife), how many jobs a man really needs, and why it's never Momma's fault. What artist and mentor Reverend Albert Wagner taught him about life, paint, and sex. Then, we explore the life of an outsider artist, from selling his work in the streets to selling at Tina Knowles's benefit and collectors abroad, and all of the rejections and hustles in between. It's vodka love, Superman, and Black Kryptonite ... on #conversationforadults. Kim Carlson is an outsider artist who operates and creates within the realms of conceptual and collaborative frameworks. Outsider art is a form of art that is derived from individuals with little to no formal art instruction or knowledge. Outsider art is a gnostic art; the term gnosis refers to something that is ‘known' directly from the source of all that is and tends to have mystical qualities about it. Outsider artists are often people marginalized in Western society, misunderstood, misrepresented, and misinterpreted in and among the cultures, communities, and families, making many of them in the American and predominantly Western cultures categorized as mentally ill and/or disabled. For Kim, being an outsider artist means that she allows her spirit and intuition to guide what she creates. Artistically, this has led Kim through anime and comic book-style art to painting, mixed media, dance, written word, teaching, nursing, coaching, and Tarot card inspired psychic readings and interpretations. Kim believes the ultimate mission of the outsider artist is to awaken in themselves their authenticity, transform the world they see around them from pain and suffering to joy, love, and inspiration, and then to go out in to the world and shine with hope and light to inspire others to do the same. Joseph Cornell has often been referred to as an ‘outsider’ but he was accepted into the art market as a partial Surrealist at a time when the art of the self-taught had no name or definition. If he had been defined as an outsider, would he have had difficulty being accepted into the canon of 20th century art history? How would this definition change our approach to the display, interpretation and market for his work? This panel discussion considers what the new spaces are for outsider art and what the responsibilities are for those involved in the interpretation, collection, curation and sale of these works within the context of today’s art world.

Prof. Dana Chandler has always said he thinks many women are smarter than he is, especially black women. So, we're back this week talking about how Chandler's art reflects the black female intellect and what the intent of the content of pieces like his portrait of Angela Davis as well as every day women portrayed in his "Afrifaces in Your Neighborhood" pieces. Why did Chandler paint these pieces? During this, our final show celebrating women in honor of National Women's History Month, we will discuss how this art is intended to encourage black people to love themselves and, especially, of black women. Called "controversial", a "Black Power Artist", "activist artist" and "Outsider Artist", Chandler, 70, was born in 1941 in Lynn, MA. He is best known for the edgy, colorful, controversial and hotly-debated artistic statements of his 1960’s-1980’s works. Prof. Chandler has long argued that African American are the least respected, least valued women on the planet. In a society that still touts the Eurocentric ideals of beauty, African American women, including First Lady, Michelle Obama, are thought and even called "ugly". Chandler, however, thinks black women are the most beautiful women in the world and his art reflects that. So, on this episode of our show, continuing our them of celebrating women during National Women's History Month, we will continue to discuss Chandler's love of black women and the ways he empowers them by reflecting thier unique beauty in his works. We will discuss, in particular, his seminal Black on Black for Blacks pieces of rhe 1960s and 1970s (which the Artist reprised in the early 90s). These pieces encourage black people to love themselves. They also promote black love and respect of black women by portraying them positively. As importantly, they depict black women's love of black people and, especially, of black men. Prof. Chandler has long argued that African American and other women of color are the least respected, least protected women on the planet. It is, indeed, an unsafe world for females. Moreover, Chandler asserts, rightfully, that black women in particular have not been highly valued for their beauty and strength. But, Chandler sought to remedy those challenges in his art, portraying the value, power and beauty of black women and showing all women how they can empower themselves against crime, violence and physical abuse using common household items to protect themselves. His Urban Weaponry Series does precisely that. On this episode, as we continue our National Women History Month series, we'll start to a three part series discussing those works. Part 1 will focus on Chandler's Urban Weaponry series of the 1970s. Chandler continues to evolve and his views, expressed on this show, provide weekly evidence of his continued development. In recognition of Women's History Month, our series of ArtsTalk shows will be about Prof. Chandler's long history of depicting the realities of women's lives in his artwork. From the 1960s and 70s with his Black on Black for Blacks and Urban Weaponry works, Chandler has expressed value and concern for Black women in his art. As a professor of Art and Art History for 33 years at Simmons in Boston, a women's college, Chandler taught about and began to take an interest in his art in creating works that portrayed other women's experiences. So, on this episode, we will discuss the intent of the content in his KKKrimes Against Womanity reprographic collage series that he began creating in the early 90s to depict the effects of atrocities of human holocausts like Native American eradication, African slavery and the Jewish Holocaust had on women's lives. Because he continues to evolve, his messages change to reflect his personal evolution, he is still an interesting, provocative speaker who can speak and/or lecture brilliantly about the historical relevance of his art and his activism to the worldwide struggle for race and gender equality as well as bridge the generation gap that is confounding this country’s leadership and confronting America as we move into the “internationalist” phase of our own evolution. The show is co-hosted and produced by Chandler's daughter and artist agent, Dahna M. Chandler, an award-winning journalist. (c) 2012. The Outsider Artist, LLC and BAPsody in Blue, Inc.
Most of us know by now that archeologists believe that all human history originated in Africa. By extension, Africancentric art historians and scholars have long argued that all culture grew out of the world's African origins. It follows that African art was the world's first art form and all art is infludence by ancient African art. Thus, in this, our final ArtsTalk episode celebrating Black History Month, Prof. Dana C. Chandler, who taught African and African American Art from 3000 BC to the present at Simmons College in Boston, for 33 years, will discuss, from his artist's perspective, the influence ancient African art on all art, especiall African American art. How did the principles and practices of Afrocentrism, that begin in the late 19th century but was popularized in 1980s and 90s, affect African American thought and, by extension, art? How was it the same or different from Black Nationalism? Who were its thought leaders and what were they saying about who African Americans are and should be? What is the basis of these often heated and frequently scholarly debates about the nature of black identity? Who were the movement's detractors? How did Afrocentrism affect the culture, especially art education? As we continue our Black History Month ArtsTalk series, Prof. Dana C. Chandler, who taught African and African American Art from 3000 BC to the present at Simmons College in Boston, for 33 years, will discuss, from his artist's perspective, the influence Afrocentrism on African American thought and art. Have you ever contemplated the influence of African Art on the European classical art tradition? Has cubism always fascinated you? Would you like simply to learn more about this early 20th century avante garde movement in European art? Pablo Picasso, Ferdinand Leger, Georges Braque, Henri Matisse and Paul Gaugin and many others, all, desiring to move away from classical European art tradition and intrigued by the stark forms found in African imagery, began incorporating African art forms into their works. There is convincing evidence of the existence of this program and we will provide links to credible sources on the subject, including to a video documentary and expert in the blogosphere. Chandler and his equally erudite and sardonic daughter will bring their perspectives on domestic and foreign politics, social issues and current events to internet radio each week on Blog Talk Radio. In this premiere episode, Prof. Dana C. Chandler, Jr. (Akin Duro) introduces the audience to his thought-provoking show and the issues he will cover. The show is co-hosted by his daughter, award-winning journalist, Dahna M. Chandler. These views will form the basis of this show's content. Learn more about Chandler by visiting his Facebook Page. (c) 2011. BAPsody in Blue, Inc. and The Outsider Artist, LLC
