Defying Barriers is the memoir of a man told by his own government to vanish — and who turned the threat into a business empire spanning two countries. In this interview with Irakli, businessman and author Sam Montši recounts how a 1987 order to "disappear" from military-ruled Lesotho drove him into apartheid South Africa, where he joined the mighty South African Breweries. There, he says, "I was the first Black general manager in the SAB Group at the time. And white people, sadly, were not used to having a Black person overseeing them. So some of them behaved in an unfortunate fashion, and I had to get rid of one of them." Montši explains the operating instinct behind a portfolio that broke barriers from fishing to shipbuilding — "a business needs to move, and move fast" — and reflects candidly on succession, recalling how his son Arif joined him: "Dad, I'm coming to work with you. I'm not coming to work for you. I'm not going to carry your briefcase." He reveres Nelson Mandela as a nation builder — "we were lucky to have him when we had him" — but delivers a stinging critique of Black Economic Empowerment, charging that it "has pitted the Black man against the white person, rather than getting them to work together," and that requiring white firms to take on Black partners is "in a sense, suggesting that Black people cannot create these things themselves." Montši also shares the leadership philosophy that carried him from a Soweto childhood to West African boardrooms: "for you to shine, you must make the people that work directly under you shine." He outlines in detail the journey of crossing boundaries others said could not be crossed — and what it means to now hand the family business to the next generation.

In this candid and hard-hitting interview, Alec Hogg speaks to Gerhard Papenfus, CEO of the National Employers' Association of South Africa, about his open letter condemning Black Economic Empowerment. Papenfus argues that BEE has distorted markets, damaged entrepreneurship, and entrenched elitism rather than broad-based upliftment. He challenges prevailing political narratives, questions the sustainability of empowerment through ownership transfers, and calls for merit-based economic reform to restore growth, accountability, and genuine inclusion.
The City of Johannesburg has removed a Solidarity billboard along the M1 highway due to its alleged anti-transformation agenda. The banner, part of Solidarity's "Race to the Bottom" campaign claimed South Africa is the world's most race-regulated nation, citing 145 laws including Black Economic Empowerment. The union has launched a documentary and handed memorandums to G20 embassies ahead of the summit in Johannesburg next week. Solidarity says it will fight the decision in court. The controversy follows US President Donald Trump's announcement boycotting the G20, claiming white South Africans face persecution. Elvis Presslin spoke to Connie Mulder, Head of the Solidarity Research Institute
The ANC has criticised the Democratic Alliance's proposal to scrap Black Economic Empowerment, saying it's an idea that must be challenged by all democracy-loving people. The DA argues that BEE has promoted corruption and killed jobs, benefiting only politically connected individuals. The party unveiled its Economic Inclusion for All Bill, which proposes winding down the BEE Commission and removing BEE references from legislation. For reaction Elvis Presslin spoke to IFP spokesperson, Mkhuleko Hlengwa
South Africa's economic chickens are coming home to roost. Economist Dawie Roodt warns that Black Economic Empowerment has enriched a politically connected elite while leaving the majority trapped in poverty. He says powerful trade unions are pricing workers out of jobs and strangling productivity, while the state is failing in its most basic duty to keep citizens safe. For Roodt, the penny is finally dropping - South Africans are waking up to the link between bad policy, job losses, and a shrinking economy.

Corruption. Black Economic Empowerment. And that R100-billion Transformation Fund…These are topics being debated hotly on a daily basis in South Africa. In his latest interview with BizNews, Toby Chance, the Democratic Alliance (DA) spokesperson on Trade, Industry and Competition, speaks about corruption at the Lotteries Commission were whistleblowers were “really severely damaged…and in many instances their lives have been ruined and their finances have been completely devastated” in the wake of allegations that up to R2-billion of corrupt grants were issued between around about 2011 and 2022. Chance gives an update on the controversy surrounding the appointment of a new licence operator and says: “It would be very surprising to me if there wasn't further litigation coming up around the corner…So they (Ithuba Holdings) really had four bites of the cherry, which I think many of the contesting bidders will find to be unconstitutional and unlawful.” Meanwhile, he also addresses the charge that the DA is “anti-transformation”, and shares the highlights of the party's submission on the R100-billion Transformation Fund. He also outlines the DA's alternative plan to BEE.
In his latest hard-hitting Sunday Show with BizNews, Neil De Beer, the President of the United Independent Movement (UIM) , slams the way the African Congress (ANC) is operating without a national mandate in the Government of National Unity (GNU). “This government doesn't have a quorum. There's not a singular party in this country that received the right to establish itself on a 50 plus one quorum. So in my opinion, they are not a legitimate government,” he says. De Beer also lambasts the other parties in the GNU for their lack of effectiveness. “It's just a fact that the DA (Democratic Alliance) and the Freedom Front and the rest of the people in the GNU are not keeping them (the ANC) and him (the President) accountable and therefore we as the citizens are sitting in a canoe going up the stream and hearing the thunder of the water.” With a second group of Afrikaner “refugees” arriving in America, De Beer expressed outrage at President Cyril Ramaphosa's defense of the Kill the Boer song and says the matter should be pursued all the way to the International Criminal Court of Justice. (ICJ) As for the President doubling down on BEE policies, De Beer describes the stark contrast between Black Economic Empowerment and Afrikaner empowerment that built economically solid companies that bolstered the economy of this country to turn it into an economic giant. He also has harsh words for Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe as tensions are rising over proposed amendments to SA's mining legislation. Furthermore, he expresses grave concern over the registration move of an apparently fundamentalist political party, the Islamic State of Africa.
John Maytham speaks with Ajay Lalu, Managing Director of Black Lite Consulting, about a heated debate around transformation policy in South Africa. At the centre of the discussion is Communications Minister Solly Malatsi’s proposal to allow Equity Equivalent Investment Programmes (EEIPs) as a path to BEE compliance for electronic communications licence applicants. Instead of selling 30% equity to historically disadvantaged groups, multinationals could invest in local development initiatives. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. South Africa has to get rid of policies with “race-related objectives” that “seek to divide us as a nation”. That is the call from Mawande Gqotso, the Founder of the African Renewal Movement (ARM). In this interview with BizNews, he says: “… we need to do away with all the current policies, the Black Economic Empowerment, the Affirmative Actions, the BELA, the NHI, all the things that seeks to divide us and look at more what needs to unite us.” Gqotso says the initial high hopes that the Government of National Unity (GNU) would make a difference in the lives of ordinary citizens, are being dashed because “the two major players are fighting amongst each other”. He says for South Africa to go forward, “we need a clear definition of what is government and what is opposition. And I believe that the current set up doesn't allow that…this arrangement is derailing us as the nation”. Slamming the Budget impasse and the proposed VAT hike Gqotso says: “…it shows a government that has run out of ideas and concepts on how to take the country forward”.
John Maytham is joined by Danny Masimene, President of the Black Business Council in the Built Environment, to unpack how the collapse of the 30% subcontracting rule has fuelled extortion, violence, and project delays in South Africa’s construction sector. Masimene explains how a once-promising empowerment policy was derailed, and how new legislation and formalising black business forums could help restore order and drive real transformation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
At the seventh BizNews Conference (BNC#7) in Hermanus, political scientist Moeletsi Mbeki delivered a searing critique of South Africa's century-long nationalist rule, blaming Afrikaner and African nationalism for the country's economic and social woes. He argued that policies like Black Economic Empowerment, rooted in entitlement and corruption, have deepened the nation's "hole." Mbeki urged the Democratic Alliance (DA), the second-largest party, to seize the moment, reject nationalism, and outline a bold plan to secure 51% of the vote and rescue South Africa from decline. In his post-keynote Q&A with BizNews founder Alec Hogg, Mbeki tackled questions on South Africa's rejection of nationalism, the ANC's decline, and the DA's potential to lead. He dismissed fears of ANC coalitions with EFF and MK as unrealistic, emphasized the need for a constituency-based electoral system, and criticized the bloated public service draining the economy. Mbeki urged the DA to leverage its influence and called for stronger ties with the US, separating South Africa's interests from ANC failures.
Black Economic Empowerment was initially introduced by former South African president Nelson Mandela in the 1990s, as one of his government's policies. But in 2003, it was revised and changed to BBBEE: Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment. It's aim is to facilitate the much broader participation of black South Africans in the economy, thus addressing inequality. This section of the population was excluded during the years of white minority rule, leading to high levels of poverty. But some sections of the white population, including American businessman Elon Musk, who was born in South Africa, have been critical of this policy. So today Africa Daily's Mpho Lakaje finds out why this law is so polarizing. Guests: Tshepo Mokoena, Kganki Matabane and Sandile Swana

The $1.98 Trillion Problem: The DIY Blueprint for Black Economic Empowerment
In this episode, we chat with Warren Beech, CEO at Beech Veltman, a leading mining, natural resources and energy focused law firm with a specialist team in mining, infrastructure, and natural resources. Warren is a highly accomplished and recognised mining, natural resources, infrastructure, and environmental law specialist. He provides multi-disciplinary legal and related services to the mining industry which includes health and safety, environment, anti-bribery and corruption / human rights, fair employment practices, community and social aspects, Black Economic Empowerment and transformation. He covers some of these topics above and discusses the challenges that the African mining industry is facing from many different angles. He will be also attending the Mining Indaba in February so be sure to reach out to him if you have any questions. KEY TAKEAWAYS The African mining industry faces systemic challenges such as regulatory uncertainty, infrastructure issues, and energy supply constraints. Political changes and the demand for greater citizen participation in mineral wealth are also significant factors impacting the sector. Compliance with safety regulations is crucial, and understanding the human impact of mining accidents can drive better safety outcomes. The approach to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices in mining has often become a tick-box exercise, which undermines its effectiveness. A more substantive approach is needed to ensure that ESG principles genuinely contribute to sustainability and community well-being. The Stilfontein illegal mining crisis highlights the socioeconomic drivers behind illegal mining activities, which are often linked to poverty and unemployment. Addressing these root causes and facilitating small-scale mining licensing could help mitigate the issue of illegal mining. BEST MOMENTS "The biggest challenge at the moment in Africa and the mining sector are the changes that are happening all along... political change is going to be one of the key themes for 2025." "Illegal mining has been around for a long time... What is unique and new about it is just the sheer scale of it." "If we were able to make it easier for small-scale miners to get licensed, then you'll start pushing out the illegal miners." "Health and safety is critical... The adoption of the zero harm principle is vital. I mean, everybody must be able to go home safely every day." Metal man and football fan Patrice Motsepe rose out of post-apartheid South Africa to become the country's first black billionaire. Under apartheid, Patrice had to get a special permit to study at an ‘whites-only' university - the same that Nelson Mandela attended in the 1940s - becoming a lawyer before following the gold into the mines. When the racist regime finally crumbled, he benefited from Black Economic Empowerment initiatives that turbo-charged his wealth. BBC business editor Simon Jack and journalist Zing Tsjeng track Patrice's rise from asking to do the worst job in the mines to owning them. Then they decide if they think he's good, bad, or just another billionaire.
“It feels like a black man deserves the worst. The poor are getting poorer while the rich are getting richer. I don't know how things will change” – Alexandra resident, Vusi Mbeye. On the 27th of April 1994, millions of South Africans voted in their country's very first democratic election. During white minority rule, black people were not allowed to vote. Nelson Mandela's African National Congress won that election and then introduced policies like Affirmative Action and Black Economic Empowerment. In addition, many black students received financial aid from the government and private companies, to further their university or college studies. All these measures were meant to correct the economic injustices of the past. But 30 years after the fall of apartheid, have black South Africans experienced meaningful economic freedom? Africa Daily presenter Mpho Lakaje, who is himself a black South African, sits down with two men who were both born in Alexandra township: street vendor Vusi Mbeye and Theo Baloyi, a wealthy businessman. He also visits political analyst Khaya Sithole.
South Africa's 5th largest party, the Freedom Front Plus, will TODAY launch it's election manifesto in Pretoria. Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen promised on Tuesday that if President Cyril Ramaphosa rams through the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill, the DA will immediately take him to court to protect the country's health system against what the DA calls the African National Congress's (ANC's) gutting of the country's health system. Steenhuisen was outlining the DA's blueprint to "rescue South Africa" after the 2024 general elections, when he said a new government would immediately prepare to introduce a new Budget to reflect its new priorities. He said the DA would bury the ANC's "job-killing policies", including land expropriation without compensation, the nationalisation of mines, farms, industry and the Reserve Bank, as well as the "madness" of the NHI. Steenhuisen said the DA fully supported the call by business leaders for Ramaphosa not to sign what is widely being called an "unconstitutional" NHI Bill, and to instead refer it back to Parliament. He applauded Business Unity South Africa and Business for SA for taking what he described as a principled stand against the NHI, after they also urged the President to refer the Bill back to Parliament. The NHI Bill was passed by the National Council of Provinces in late 2023, and sent to Ramaphosa to be signed into law. Government has stood firm in its support for the Bill, brushing off warnings that it undermines universal healthcare instead of advancing its progress. However, the Bill has been sharply criticised by doctors, health facility providers, and health insurance companies. Steenhuisen noted that the process that led to the Bill ignored public input and said the Bill itself was riddled with unconstitutional clauses. On December 14, the DA wrote to Ramaphosa imploring him to refer the NHI Bill back to Parliament, making the point that given the flaws in the Bill, it was, in fact, his constitutional duty to refer it back. Last month, the DA received a response from Ramaphosa's Parliamentary Counsellor Gerhard Koornhof. Steenhuisen noted that without even so much as addressing the substance of the party's request, Koornhof simply said: "You are kindly reminded that the DA participated in the Parliamentary process related to this Bill. The Bill was thereafter approved by both Houses, in a Parliamentary process in which the DA participated." Steenhuisen criticised Ramaphosa for seeing fit to send such a "politically-motivated response", which in no way dealt with the issue of the unconstitutionality of the Bill. He said this demonstrated that the ANC was putting the country's health sector at risk purely for political reasons. "Ramaphosa's apparent determination to ram this Bill through apparently to stick it to the DA, would be a violation of his constitutional duty to this country. We, therefore, also welcome the announcement by business leaders that they are considering legal action against Ramaphosa if he persists along this route," he said. ECONOMIC GROWTH AND JOB CREATION Meanwhile, Steenhuisen highlighted that if it came into power, the DA's "jobs-friendly" Budget would redirect priorities from destructive policies, towards job creation. He said for the first time in three decades, entrepreneurs, businesspeople, investors and hard-working South Africans would see a Budget that respected them. "For too long, the ANC has viewed economic growth with suspicion, and the people who create jobs as the enemy. With the DA in government, investor sentiment will soar and our new Budget will kickstart economic growth and job creation," he added. The immediate stimulus of a jobs-friendly new Budget will be followed by the introduction of the DA's Responsible Spending Bill and the Social Impact Bill. The former will introduce a debt rule that limits the amount of debt any government can add to the fiscus. The race-based Black Economic Empowerment will be replaced with "means-tested" empowerment that will benefit the 30-million people who still live in poverty and who...

Zandri Cirinna, founder of Resionex (a specialist BEE Business Consultancy), returns for another radio chat to demystify the world of Black Economic Empowerment and how your business can win by embracing it as part of a business strategy. Contrary to popular belief, being fully BEE compliant does not necessarily have to involve giving up direct business ownership/equity... Zandri explains some lesser-known indirect ownership initiatives that can add significantly to a business's BEE scorecard whilst meaningfully impacting the lives of beneficiaires that already have an existing relationship with the company. By playing "corporate cupid" and helping business owners identify deserving beneficiaries within their existing supply chain (or where a relationship already exists), Resionex is able to guide businesses towards meaningfully supporting individuals that they are already invested in. In doing so, real economic opportunities are unlocked both for beneficiaries and for the businesses supporting them that are now able to access a broader range of high-value clients (due to their high-ranking BEE score card). Zandri Cirinna, founder of Resionex (a specialist BEE Business Consultancy), explains some of the myths and misconceptions around the Black Economic Empowerment Act in South Africa and what businesses often get wrong about this aspect of Affirmative Action. Clement Manyathela speaks to the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Commissioner Tshediso Matona about the implementation of B-BBEE in the country. Matona says despite facing substantial criticism, B-BBEE policy should continue to be regarded as a key instrument for addressing the economic inequalities in South Africa's unequal society.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Roelf Meyer, known for his role in successfully negotiating South Africa's Constitution alongside the ANC, joined Biznews for an exclusive interview. Meyer provided insights into his relationship with Cyril Ramaphosa and shed light on the President's challenges in executing his plans. He highlighted the ANC and DA as the only parties with governing experience, cautioning against premature predictions on coalitions. Meyer discusses South Africa's peace efforts in Ukraine, addresses criticism of the 1990s settlement, and advocates for a revised model of Black Economic Empowerment. He reveals that the Transformation Initiative (ITI), consisting of him and four other transition veterans, has been requested by the US to share their experiences in dealing with factionalism. Elon Musk's Starlink, the high-speed, low-cost internet access offering from space, won't be coming to South Africa. The reason, says tenacious SA opposition politician Dianne Kohler-Barnard, is the ANC demands that to be licenced, Starlink must first give 30% of the local company to politically connected cronies under the guise of Black Economic Empowerment. That's a demand that Musk, who was born and raised in Pretoria and still has family in the country, refuses to countenance. This was admitted by the ANC in Parliament, prompted by Kohler-Barnard, the DA's Shadow Minister of Communications. So while the rest of Africa stands to leapfrog into the digital age through Starlink's cheap, fast, universally accessible bandwidth from space, ANC policy will stop South Africa from participating. Kohler-Barnard spoke to Alec Hogg of BizNews. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Most Black people, despite our ingenuity, still have to push through a wall of distrust, opposition and financial impediment that was built at the base of our family trees from the beginning. In this episode from the Take Action Series, Kiesha focuses on learning from work of Kerry Coddett, an activist and multi-hyphenate creative in NYC, who is doing her part to chip away at that wall. Kerry and her sister have showed moxie and creativity in designing and running a pub crawl with an aim to demonstrate black buying power, support the local black economy, and honor the seven principles of Kwanzaa.Episode Resources:Learn more about Kerry Coddettkerrycoddett.comKwanzaa CrawlInterview with Alex Babbitt on Behind the Mic StandContact InfoSend booking inquiries for Kiesha to (info at kieshagarrison.co)Kiesha on IG: @kiesha_garrisonDirectly support the podcast financially:Cash AppVenmoPayPal.Me

In celebration of Black History Month, we brought back Karen's popular 2 part podcast series on Black Economic Prosperity - Past Present and Future. Catch new intro and update too. The wealth gap between white and black communities because of systemic racism and the resulting obstacle for building equity and wealth is astounding. This is part 2 of Karen Rands' series on Black Economic Empowerment and Prosperity. This episode addresses the 10X prosperity gap, as reported by the Brookings Institute (AVG Black Household net worth is just $17,150 in 2016, while the average white household is $171,000) and suggests causes for that vast divide that compounded over time and builds upon the research and insights provided in Episode 1. Here, Karen discusses the cycles of prosperity for Blacks in a segregated America, often followed by violence and out right biased legislative and financial practices intended to help enrich White while prohibiting Blacks from participating in those same economic and educational opportunities. Karen touches on the challenges with public education, higher education, and societal beliefs that infect the black identity in America and the historic lack of capital and offers insight into new opportunities for Black Americans. Karen provides a strong call to action for successful black business owners, and 'white' corporations, investors, VCs and Family Offices to be proactive in efforts to engage and uplift minority entrepreneurs and black business owners. In this episode of the 'Solutions With David Ansara' podcast, I speak with former world champion boxer turned lawyer, Lovemore Ndou, about his new memoir, Tough Love. We discuss Lovemore's rough childhood in 1980s Messina (now known as Musina), his escape to Australia, and his long journey to the top of the boxing world. We also reflect on the transformational power of education, and his "second career" as an attorney in Sydney. Lovemore and I dissect the current state of South Africa, and try to understand where the country has gone wrong since he left in the mid-1990s. Lovemore pulls no punches in his assessment of the ruling party's performance: BEE, corruption and a culture of impunity are just a few of the problems the ANC has inflicted on South Africa, he says. Lovemore has his own ideas for how to fix the country of his birth. He details his plans to return to South Africa, as well as his long-term political ambitions in this wide-ranging conversation.
