Tara VanDerveer has more wins than any other coach in NCAA basketball history. But as she says, motivating and leading teams isn't about barking orders. Communication, she says, “It starts, number one, with listening.”For VanDerveer, leadership isn't about a power dynamic, but a collaboration between her and her team. “I can't do it by myself and they can't do it by themselves. But as a team, we can,” she says. From seeking opinions from her assistant coaches to connecting with players about life outside the gym, VanDerveer recognizes that championships are won through communication. “The relationships that you have with your players, the communication that you have with them, will determine your success as a coach,” she says.In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, VanDerveer and host Matt Abrahams explore more communication insights from on and off the court — being clear and concise, giving praise and positive feedback, and letting go of perfectionism.Episode Reference Links:Stanford Cardinal Profile: Website Ep.102 Create Presence: How to Communicate in a Way Others Can Feel Website / YouTube Ep.35 Leading From The Hot Seat: How To Communicate Under Pressure Website / YouTube Connect:Email Questions & Feedback >>> thinkfast@stanford.eduEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn Page, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInStanford GSB >>> LinkedIn & TwitterChapters:(00:00:00) IntroductionHost Matt Abrahams introduces guest Tara VanDerveer, former Stanford University basketball coach.(00:00:59) Building Trust and OpennessFostering an environment where players feel comfortable being challenged and pushing themselves.(00:01:52) Communicating Under PressureStrategies for speaking clearly and concisely during crucial moments in games.(00:05:24) Motivation and FocusMotivating a team during challenging times and keeping them focused after successes.(00:07:26) The Value of RoutineThe value and impact of routines in practice and performance.(00:09:01) Positive Feedback and PraiseBalancing constructive criticism with positive feedback to foster player growth.(00:10:46) Taking RisksInsights on taking risks in career and coaching strategies.(00:12:56) Dual Role of CoachingThe dual role of a coach in ensuring both athletic and personal growth for players.(00:14:11) Handling Turnover and OnboardingManaging player turnover and integrating new team members.(00:16:39) Managing EmotionsTechniques for staying calm and focused during high-emotion situations.(00:17:55) Handling Mistakes and Staying PositiveMethods for helping players move past mistakes and stay focused.(00:19:35) Equity in SportsAddressing and advocating for equity between women's and men's sports.(00:21:21) Final Three QuestionsTara shares how to accept praise, two communicators she admires, and her recipe for successful communication.(00:26:30) ConclusionSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

1,216. That's the total number of NCAA games won by Tara VanDerveer, making her the all-time winning coach in college basketball history. In addition to coaching for 38 years at Stanford, she led the U.S. Women's team to Olympic gold in 1996 – finishing with a flawless 16-0 record. “Coaching is teaching. It's really trying to help people go to places they can't go themselves,” says VanDerveer. “There's nothing more rewarding than a great team.”It's hard to believe that the legendary coach was once barred from playing herself. In the seventh grade, VanDerveer was her school basketball team's mascot. By the time she was in ninth grade, she still wasn't allowed to play – even though the coach told her she was the best among both the boys and girls. Since then, the iconic trailblazer for women in sports has changed the game. In this episode of the View From The Top podcast hosted by Shannon Beckham, MBA '24, VanDerveer shares moments from her legendary career and reflects on what it means to be a great teammate – on and off the court. A homily is a public speech, so it only makes sense to write it in public, says Scott VanDerveer, who mostly writes his homilies sitting at a long shared table in a coffee shop. “I love looking up at whoever's in line at the cash register at that moment and thinking, ‘Would this guy, or would this woman care about what I'm saying at all; would this speak to their life at all?'” he says. “Or would they say, ‘Ugh, that's so churchy?'” The Rev. VanDerveer, a priest of the Diocese of Albany and the pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Glens Falls, New York, joins “Preach” host Ricardo da Silva to discuss his homily for the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, often referred to as Corpus Christi. In the season finale of Preach, we're answering a resounding call from our listeners! Instead of our usual homily recorded exclusively for the podcast, we're sharing one Scott delivered at his parish in June 2022, before a live congregation. Ricardo invites Scott to revisit the homily, two years later, to explore how it evolved from preparation to delivery and how he would refine it today. Scott also shares his tips for weaving parishioners' personal stories into his homilies, revealing how he leverages his training as a journalist and uses the notes app on his cellphone, akin to how a reporter might use a notebook to capture inspiration on the go. Scott also jokes about his retirement plans, imagining himself back behind the wheel of a school bus, a job he briefly held for a time after college. He quips, “I always tease my friends that priesthood is the second-best job I've ever had.” Read Scott's homily Read the Scripture readings for the Solemnity of the Body and Blood Christ, Year C. MLB – AP source: Verlander agrees to 2-year contract with Mets A person familiar with the negotiations says Justin Verlander has agreed to an $86.7 million, two-year contract with the New York Mets. The deal reunites the AL Cy Young Award winner with Max Scherzer and gives the Mets a high-profile replacement for Jacob deGrom. The deal includes a vesting third-year option, according to a person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because there was no announcement. Verlander leaves World Series champion Houston to step in for deGrom, who agreed to a $185 million, five-year contract with Texas last week. It also puts Verlander on the same team as Scherzer after they played together with the Tigers from 2010-14. Verlander turns 40 in February. MLB – Judge looms; Verlander, Turner deals heat up winter meetings Justin Verlander is going to the New York Mets. Trea Turner has agreed to a blockbuster deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. Baseball's first winter meetings since 2019 kicked into high gear when Verlander agreed to an $86.7 million, two-year deal with New York, and Turner joined Philadelphia for a $300 million, 11-year contract. Clayton Kershaw also returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers on a $20 million, one-year deal. The biggest outstanding question at the end of an impactful day at a downtown San Diego hotel centered on the status of MVP Aaron Judge, who remains a free agent after setting the AL home run record and powering the Yankees to a division title. The seven-time Super Bowl champion tossed a one-yard TD pass to rookie Cade Otton, finishing a 91-yard drive to pull within 16-10 with exactly three minutes remaining. NFL – Packers GM, coach want Rodgers back next season A day after Aaron Rodgers said returning for a 19th season with the Green Bay Packers will require a “mutual desire on both sides”, his general manager agreed with the franchise quarterback. “Surely, yeah,” GM Brian Gutekunst said on Monday, a day after a 28-19 victory at the Chicago Bears moved the Packers to 5-8. Even with 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love waiting in the wings, the Packers want Rodgers back. Coach Matt LaFleur also said on Monday “absolutely” he'd want Rodgers back for 2023. Baseball’s first winter meetings since 2019 kicked into high gear when Verlander agreed to an $86.7 million, two-year deal with New York, and Turner joined Philadelphia for a $300 million, 11-year contract. Even with 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love waiting in the wings, the Packers want Rodgers back. Coach Matt LaFleur also said on Monday “absolutely” he’d want Rodgers back for 2023. No. 1 played No. 2 last week and some weird stuff happened. More importantly, it showed just how darn good South Carolina and Stanford actually are. But, on the eve of Thanksgiving, we need to do more than just talk about the happenings on the court. We need to spend some time talking about what it would be like if Tara VanDerveer came over for Thanksgiving. Sit back and enjoy. Also included: Some mid-major love, a PK85 preview, Ava Jones rules, and your usual NYU update.
Tara VanDerveer is an absolute legend in the world of basketball. She's a hall-of-famer, she's a 5X National Coach of the Year in College Basketball, she's won 3 NCAA Division I titles, she's been to 13 Final Fours, and she's won a gold medal with USA Basketball. Her awards and accolades are up there with just about any college coach, and she's the all-time leader in wins in women's basketball. However, you're going to find out pretty quickly that Tara does not really enjoy talking about herself and her accolades. She loves talking about her teams. She loves talking about the athletes that she's had the privilege of coaching. She loves talking about Stanford University, where she is currently the Head Women's Basketball Coach. But Tara is the real deal when it comes to humility. She's authentic. She's somebody who cares deeply about the world and basketball. She genuinely cares about the people she serves, and she really makes it about them. Tara had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “It really helps my energy during the year, that I can be all-in during the season, when I've had that great time on the lake in the summer” (7:55). “When you die, no one's going to say, ‘Do you wish you worked more?' I want to wish I'd played more” (10:05). “Work will always be there. You can always come back to it” (12:00). “Sometimes I think less is better” (13:00). “I have to pace myself. You only have so much tread on the tire” (13:30). “I want to really pick my spots of what I'm going to do, how I'm going to do it, and how well I want to do it” (14:30). “I just like being in the gym with our team” (16:30). “The things that keep me grounded are what's really fun” (16:40). “If I were in junior high right now, with all the basketball on TV, I'd probably flunk out. I just love basketball” (17:40). “I work hard at taking care of myself” (17:55). “I try to do things that are nurturing to me so that I can be effective with our team” (18:15). “I don't really think about [legacy] at all” (18:45). “The energy at Stanford and the people I meet there, that gives me a lot of juice” (20:25). “A college degree is a very valuable thing for women” (21:45). “I love coaching the quintessential Stanford student” (22:10). “I love the challenge of working at Stanford” (25:00). “The court is our classroom” (29:00). “I want to enjoy today” (31:10). “I'm not going to stare in the rearview mirror as I'm going forwards” (31:45). “Parenting and coaching are very similar, and they're both very similar to gardening. You don't just sit there and look at the garden. You water the garden, you weed the garden, you fertilize the garden” (38:00). “The world is bigger than just you” (39:20). “The thing that can really destroy us is greed” (42:00). “I like it when our team is happy for other people's success” (42:05). “I want our players to love playing at Stanford and love playing for me” (55:00). “I can look in the mirror and be happy with being myself… I can't try to be someone else” (56:35). “I'm a copier by nature, which I'm proud of” (56:55). “Being a person takes work” (1:00:10). “My job is to help them be the best they can be” (1:02:30). Thank you so much to Tara for coming on the podcast! I wrote a book called “Shift Your Mind” that was released in October of 2020, and you can order it on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Guest: Karl Smesko, Florida Gulf Coast Head Coach Florida Gulf Coast head coach Karl Smesko joins the Basketball Podcast to discuss his offensive system, shooting psychology and the things that helped him become one of the most successful coaches in women's college basketball history. Karl Smesko's resume sits among the best all-time in NCAA Division I women's basketball as he enters his 22nd season on the sideline in 2020-21, including his 19th with the Green and Blue. On pace to reach 600 career wins faster than legendary coaches such as Pat Summitt and Tara VanDerveer, Smesko has compiled a 554-122 record (.820) in his career, which ranks him as the third-winningest active Division I head coach behind Geno Auriemma (1,091-142, .885) and Kim Mulkey (604-101, .857). Furthermore, he passed VanDerveer (1,094-253, .812) in 2017-18 to become the fifth-winningest Division I head coach of all-time – behind Auriemma, Leon Barmore (576-87, .869), Mulkey and Summit (1,098-208, .841). If that isn't enough, he is the 10th-winningest active head coach across all divisions, as well as the 12th-winningest such coach all-time. Smesko has the Eagles on pace to shatter the NCAA's all-time Division I winning percentage record by the end of the 2020-21 season as his team is one of only two in the nation along with Tennessee (.801) with at least an .800 all-time winning percentage. In fact, FGCU is 493-95 (.838) since the program's inception in 2002-03, which is easily the best winning percentage in the nation and also ahead of third-place UConn (.795), but the NCAA requires at least 10 years as a Division I program, and FGCU's four reclassification years (2007-11) do not count towards the 10-year minimum. Thus, Smesko and the Green and Blue will have to wait just a little longer to be recognized as the winningest Division I women's basketball program in NCAA history. As a little girl in the 1960s Tara VanDerveer loved playing basketball. However there were no organized sports for girls at the time. After a stellar college playing career, Tara became 2x Coach of the year at Ohio State in the early 80s. Fast forward to 2021 her Stanford Cardinals won their 3rd National Championship (90' & 92'). Coach VanDerveer is the definition of Sustaining Excellence!
Hall of Famer Tara VanDerveer is the all-time winningest coach in NCAA women's basketball history. She and her Stanford University team just capped off a magical year by winning the 2021 NCAA championship and overcoming numerous challenges in a Covid-filled season. While remarkable, what does that have to do with the wealth management industry? The parallels between sports and our industry are numerous, particularly as they relate to leadership and teamwork. Recruiting and developing talent, preserving in the face of adversity, building a culture of excellence - I could be talking about objectives of both basketball coaches and wealth management leaders. There's no difference. Listen to this episode of Can You Hold My Attention? as Tara shares her playbook for success.

Episode 22 - Aari's House March Madness is over and we're here to talk about the final four (not, as it turns out, the final THREE). We talk Aari-zona and Adia Barnes, Stanford and VanDerveer's national tour leading up to the tourney, and the cameras lingering a little too long on South Carolina's faces after getting knocked out. (We spent a lot of time on UCONN in the last ep, and the media covers UCONN enough for a season of episodes, so go there if you're interested). Plus, it's FRESH JERSEY DROP TIME for the WNBA and the NWSL. Katie can't purchase all of these, so we need you to step up and get some sweet new merch and support women's sports. Sylvia Hatchell solidified her place among the legends of basketball when she was chosen for induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a member of the class of 2013. You can reach out to coach at SRHatchell@gmail.com. Also check out her Blueberry Farm: Former UNC Women's Basketball Coach Sylvia Hatchell has a very special blueberry patch near Black Mountain, NC. On this land, Hatchell keeps a blueberry patch with 250 blueberry bushes and invites visitors to the “pick your own” patch. Pickers are encouraged to make a donation to UNC Lineberger on an honor system based on how much they pick. All proceeds and collections from the blueberry patch go directly to UNC Lineberger, where Hatchell was treated for leukemia in 2013 and 2014. Blueberries are full of powerful antioxidants, vitamins C and K, and dietary fiber, making them one of the American Institute for Cancer Research's top foods that fight cancer. The blueberries at the patch are generally available from early July through mid-August each summer. Four years later, Hatchell achieved another monumental milestone when she became only the third women's basketball coach in history to reach 1,000 career victories, joining former Tennessee legend Pat Summitt and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer. Duke's Mike Krzyzewski is the only men's coach among Division I basketball coaches to hit the 1,000 mark, and Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma got his 1,000th victory on the same day as Hatchell on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017. Hatchell's career record of 1,023-405 places her third among active women's coaches by total victories, trailing only Vanderveer and Auremma, and stands fourth in the history of the sport when you include Summitt, the all-time victories leader and long-time friend of Hatchell. Hatchell became the ACC's all-time wins leader in women's basketball, passing former Virginia coach Debbie Ryan, with an 83-62 victory over UNCG on Dec. 14, 2018. In 33 seasons in Chapel Hill, Hatchell has amassed a 751-325 mark with the Tar Heels. Beyond the sheer magnitude of wins, Hatchell's credentials are sterling. She was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004, has been named national coach of the year three times and has led teams to at least 20 wins 31 times, fourth-most nationally. While Hatchell keeps impressive company in many categories, she is also part of an exclusive club that features just one member. When UNC defeated Louisiana Tech to win the 1994 NCAA Championship, Hatchell became the first and only coach to lead teams to national championships at the AIAW, NAIA and NCAA levels. Those titles - the first two coming at Francis Marion - are the crown jewels in one of the most decorated coaching careers in women's basketball history.
