I'm thrilled to introduce a dear friend and a highly respected figure in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Scott Sigman, also known as “The Fro.” Dr. Sigman has made significant strides in the field, particularly with his pioneering work in opioid-sparing pain management techniques. His dedication to improving patient outcomes led him to found Ortholazer, a rapidly expanding franchise that is transforming pain management across the country. In addition to his groundbreaking work with Ortholazer, Dr. Sigman hosts the widely acclaimed podcast, The Ortho Show, where he shares his vast knowledge and engages in insightful discussions with experts in orthopedics and beyond. He also delivered an inspiring TED Talk titled "Changing the Paradigm of Pain Management," which has resonated with many and sparked crucial conversations about the future of pain management. Do you believe that photosynthesis is real? Then you should believe in the power of photobiomodulation and laser therapy. Let's break down the word photobiomodulation and deeply consider what it describes and why the potential to use light therapy in various conditions should excite the medical community. Photo - Light Bio - Biology/Living Tissue Modulation - Changing Something Now put it all together and what does that equal? Using light (at the right wavelength/frequency) to change living tissues. Extensive research shows that changes in cells and tissues are not only seen under the microscope but also clinically, in the benefits that photobiomodulation and laser therapy provide. By dramatically increasing mitochondrial function, enhancing blood flow and lymphatic movement, and through other mechanisms, light therapy can be used to heal numerous conditions and diseases. On the show, Dr. Scott Sigman will break down how he explains the concept of photobiomodulation and laser therapy to his colleagues, making this revolutionary technology more understandable and highlighting its potential to transform our approach to many medical conditions. Stay tuned for an enlightening and heartfelt conversation with Dr. Scott Sigman as we explore the incredible potential of light therapy.

On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson explores the endless allure of Inyo County and the Eastern Sierra with four in-the-know locals.  First up, Johnson talks with Brent Underwood, owner of Cerro Gordo, a former Gold Rush–era boomtown and mining operation nestled in the Inyo Mountains. Underwood starts off by sharing the thrills and daily struggles of living in a ghost town. “It's a lot of learning on the fly,” he says. “It's a lot of stressful days and logistical challenges, but I love it. It's probably the most interesting and fulfilling thing that I've ever done.” The entrepreneur dives into the town's history, his plans for reviving the property, and how visitors can explore Cerro Gordo for themselves.  Next, Johnson is joined by Bob Sigman, executive director of the Museum of Western Film History in Lone Pine. Sigman shares his insights into the rich Hollywood heritage of the Eastern Sierra region and what made Lone Pine in particular a filming hot spot for Western films. As Sigman explains, “The sun going from east to west over Owens Valley provided just a unique opportunity for filmmakers, not only to have the landscape, but to have variable light, whether they were shooting northeast, south, or west.” He also discusses the Lone Pine Film Festival's evolution, popular exhibits, and how to experience the cinematic landscape of Inyo County in person. Lastly, Johnson talks to Brittany and Dave Holman, the husband-and-wife team behind Owens Valley Distilling Company in Bishop. The two share how the area's magnificent rock climbing initially drew them to the area 17 years ago. “Bishop is literally a climbing mecca now,” Dave says. “I mean, you talk to any rock climber around the world, they will know Bishop, California.” The Holmans discuss the distillery's origins, including the secret to their locally made spirits. The avid outdoor enthusiasts also give tips for enjoying Bishop's epic surroundings. “If you love the outdoors, regardless of what your fitness level is—if you're just a car tourist trying to see some beautiful things or you're a hardcore athlete—there's just so much to do in this town,” Dave boasts. “It's incredible.”

Former University of West Georgia lecturer Richard Sigman, 49, pleaded guilty on Monday to malice murder, three counts of aggravated assault, and three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The charges stem from Sigman's inexplicable and random fatal shooting of 18-year-old Anna Lynn Jones, a college student with no prior connection to the assailant. The incident occurred on July 30, 2022, when Sigman, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, engaged in a heated argument at Leopoldo's Pizza Napoletana. After threatening violence, security ejected him from the establishment. Authorities later described Sigman as a "belligerent drunk who liked to pick fights with others." Even the authorities don't know why Sigman did what he did next. “For reasons that are not clear from the evidence, shortly after midnight, Sigman stumbled into the lower level of the courthouse parking deck, drew his firearm, and walked up to the parked vehicle occupied by the three female victims, all of whom were college students,” they wrote. “Sigman approached the passenger side of the vehicle and banged on the window while brandishing his handgun. The victims were naturally terrified and began to back out of the parking space to escape from Sigman. As they reversed out of the parking space, Sigman fired three rounds, striking the front seat passenger in the head and killing her.” The court sentenced Sigman to life imprisonment plus 55 years, with the possibility of parole after 30 years. Prosecutors emphasized that Sigman, who was 47 at the time of the murder, would be 77 before having a chance at freedom. During the court proceedings, Sigman claimed self-defense, alleging that someone had shot at him. However, security footage contradicted his account, leading prosecutors to denounce his actions as "legally unjustified, senseless, and incomprehensible." As the court heard the tragic details, Anna's family expressed their profound grief. Anna's father, Carl, delivered a heart-wrenching statement outside the courthouse, lamenting the loss of his daughter's dreams and the milestones she would never experience. The family's attorney, Jim Myers, revealed that Sigman attempted to deflect blame during the proceedings, but the judge swiftly put an end to such explanations. Myers is representing Anna's family in a lawsuit against Sigman and the bar where the initial altercation occurred. The lawsuit alleges negligence on the part of the bar staff for failing to address Sigman's dangerous behavior despite being aware of his intoxicated and agitated state. "He took our hopes for what we knew Anna would become and what she would accomplish -- the life she would have lived. The lives she would have touched, the life she would have given, and the lives she would have saved as a nurse," Anna's father said. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Even the authorities don't know why Sigman did what he did next. It all began with 18 months in Paris as a young woman more than 30 years ago. Inspired by her time volunteering during the day at a Parisian floral boutique while she figure skated in the evenings, Sandra Sigman's life journey and approach to floral arrangements was forever changed, and thus began the unfolding of a dream. In today's episode, author of the best-selling book in Floral Arrangements, Sandra Sigman joins me to talk about French Blooms: Floral arrangements inspired by Paris and beyond and goes behind the scenes telling more of the life journey, the highs and the lows that have left her grateful and celebratory for where she is today. Sigman's floral boutique Les Fleurs in Andover, Massachusetts, continues to offer seasonal floral arrangements that draw direct inspiration from what she learned in Paris so many years ago. Whilst continuing to take regular trips to France to visit brocantes and antique fairs, Sigman's love for the country is abundant. In our conversation Sandra will also talk about the French's sacred ritual of welcoming flowers into the home on an regular basis, just because, as well as go behind the scenes to the genesis of the book and how her friendship with Sharon Santoni, the founder of My French Country Home who makes her home in Normandy, France, played a role in many of the images found in the book (the image just below was captured on Sharon's property with her guest cottage setting the scene in the background; and her pup Ghetto is also captured in a few photographs as well). Also, the cover! Discover the cover story that took her to Paris to capture and why she felt it was important for this particular image to be the one we now see today. And Sandra also shares how her mother holds a powerful role in the business venture both daughter and mother began together to open Les Fleurs so many years ago and how her spirit continues on in the work Sandra does. I do hope you will tune in to listen to our conversation, and rest assured, a Petit Plaisir will be shared as Sandra extends ideas for setting herself up for a beautiful day.   Links from the conversation: Visit Sandra Sigman's floral boutique online or in person - Les Fleurs Brecks - Sandra's go-to for bulb shopping Adelman Peony Garden (located in Oregon) Chatou Fair - Antique Fair just on the outskirts of Paris Marché de Rungis - the flower market that offers 5am tours Sandra shared the green tea she enjoys each morning - Yogi Green Tea pure green decaf Follow Sandra Sigman on Instagram @lesfleursandover. and @lesfleursviasandra Below are a few images and a video from her account:       ~Listen to more French-inspired episodes of The Simple Sophisticate podcast here. ~Learn more about the show, The Simple Sophisticate podcast and download all of the episodes here.
