We had the pleasure of interviewing girli over Zoom video!Alt-pop rising star girli releases her empowering new single, "Be With Me," from her highly anticipated sophomore album 'Matriarchy,' set to drop on May 17th, 2024. “Be With Me” rebels against patriarchal standards, rejecting societal expectations for women and queer individuals, and staying true to yourself. This self-love anthem highlights the uniqueness of being in a relationship with oneself as the ultimate connection. There are no strings attached, no room for jealousy, etc – only the pure and positive chemistry of self-love.In late 2023, girli dropped "Nothing Hurts Like a Girl," accompanied by a provocative music video that candidly explores the highs and lows of relationships. Of the track, Billboard stated “with a throbbing bass line, crisp guitar riffs and a sparkling assortment of synths, girli is dancing the pain away” while Queerty described it as “an explosive pop track that takes you through the wringer in the best way.”'Matriarchy' marks a new phase in girli's artistic journey, emphasizing individuality and empowerment. The album's title track, "Matriarchy," has been hailed as "a fresh era for the outspoken cult heroine" by Clash, serving as a rebellion against the male gaze and a mission statement for an album that promises to rewrite the book on artistic reinvention. Additional inspiration for the album consists of figures like Petra Collins, Sofia Coppola, Patti Smith, Marlene Dietrich, Rupi Kaur, and the Riot Grrrl movement.People Magazine featured girli on their 2023 list of Emerging Artists, highlighting her exploration of mental health, queer identity, friendships, and more through her music. Praised by NME, Refinery 29, and Bustle, girli's passions extend beyond music as she fearlessly uses her platform to spark conversations around feminism, sexuality, identity, and mental health. In a world where representation matters more than ever, girli is ready to rewrite the rules and inspire positive change through her art.About girli:Amelia Toomey, professionally known as girli, is a singer-songwriter from London, England. Through her pop-punk and electric sound, she has released multiple singles and EPs. girli's debut album ‘Odd One Out' was released in 2019. Under record label AllPoints, girli releases music about female empowerment, queer relationships and mental health. In 2021, single “More Than a Friend” was released and has since amassed over 53 million streams on Spotify alone. In 2023, People Magazine nominated girli as one of their “Emerging Artists” features. Olivia Rodrigo, Dan Nigro, Madison Hu, and Tate McRae discuss the new song "Vampire" in an Instagram Live on June 30, 2023. The four artists talk about the inspiration for the song, the writing process, and the video. They also answer questions from fans. Rodrigo says that she wrote "Vampire" after a breakup. She wanted to write a song about the experience of being in a toxic relationship, and how it can feel like you're being sucked dry. Nigro, who produced the song, says that he was inspired by Rodrigo's raw emotion when she sang the demo. He wanted to create a song that would capture the feeling of heartbreak and betrayal. Hu and McRae, who are both friends of Rodrigo, share their own experiences with toxic relationships. They talk about how important it is to find your voice and to stand up for yourself. The video for "Vampire" was directed by Petra Collins. It features Rodrigo as a vampire who is seducing her victims. The video has been praised for its visuals and its message of empowerment. The Instagram Live is a candid and revealing conversation about love, loss, and power. It is a must-watch for fans of Olivia Rodrigo and anyone who has ever been in a toxic relationship. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dudpodcast/support
EGG DAY, 3min., Australia, Experimental Directed by Syarisa Yasin, Claudia Dickson, Samantha Oo A surrealist film in the style of female vaporwave, “Egg Day” explores the complex facets of femininity through scenes that allude to female reproduction. A recurring motif reflects the birth of a powerful warrior from Hindu scripture, Karna, who was born from his mother's ear. The film's style takes inspiration from artists such as Maisie Cousins, Petra Collins, and Pipilotti Rist. Get to know Syarisa Yasin: We made this film for our final assessment for an experimental film class at university. We first discussed a visual interest in orbies, fruits, eggs, and fibrous/round/soft textured images in general and wanted to layer images of these things—this led to a discussion on our personal connections to womanhood when we realized what their shapes could represent, and added hard and foreign-looking plastic babies into the mix. We had a desire to create a surrealist/mythic environment that expressed our anxieties surrounding femininity and the impact that complex social expectations have on women physically and emotionally. You can sign up for the 7 day free trial at www.wildsound.ca (available on your streaming services and APPS). In this exclusive interview, Adam talks to California-based artist Marc Horowitz (husband to previous guest Petra Collins, a kind of full circle) to talk about his career and his life. Marc grew up "poor as fuck" in Middle America before moving to California to get a degree in business. One thing leading to the next, Marc eventually transitioned to being an artist after taking a painting class during his senior year. The first half of his career saw Marc staging elaborate conceptual projects that forced the art world to confront its own financial and cultural contradictions. But at some point, painting called him back. Since then, Marc has developed his own singular aesthetic in painting that blends modernist history with pop cultural tropes. He's also a rad dude and a good gossip, so enjoy! Marc has a book coming out in the Fall, which will include a text written by your faithful host Adam Lehrer. On this week's episode, we discuss the legendary online publication and twee teenage nightmare, Rookie magazine. Founded by ordained gifted kid Tavi Gevinson in 2011, Rookie radicalized a generation of Tumblr-addicted young women into free-bleeding their way through lives, physically and emotionally. We share stories from our self-imposed suffering as misguided teen feminists, discuss the neoliberal obsession with pubescent saviors, speculate on the potential pleasure of trauma, and do recon to figure out whether or not /my sister's boyfriend Fox on his last day of high school/ is still trade.

My guest today is the wonderful Hari Nef: model, actress, activist and first trans woman signed to IMG Worldwide, one of the biggest model management firms in the world. She has graced the covers of publications such as Elle UK, Love Magazine and Interview, and has appeared in editorials in Vogue and Wonderland Magazine, among others. She may be currently best known for her role in the Emmy award-winning series TRANSPARENT. Hari currently lives in LA and is currently starring in the Gucci Bloom fragrance campaign alongside Dakota Johnson and Petra Collins. Most recently Hari has starred in black comedy thriller Assassination Nation (also starring Suki Waterhouse) which is out now in UK cinemas. It is about a group of best friends live in a world of selfies, emojis, snaps and sexts. But when their town of Salem is besieged by a massive data hack, resulting in half the citizens’ private info spewed into the public view, the community descends into anarchy. The Times have called it "The Crucible for the Instagram era" and critics at The Guardian have said it "feels like the product of a one-night stand between Spring Breakers and The Purge."In this episode we chat about the film, dealing with internet storms, how to follow your gut when choosing which projects to work on and why she loves working on thrillers that centre around social media. Hope you enjoy! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
