My name is Marina A. Smirnova. I was born on Sakhalin Island (the Far East of Russia), and, well over twenty years ago, I made the U.S.A. my home. My journey has been enriched by earning a Bachelor degree in Music Education (Minsk State Pedagogical University, 1996), a Master of Arts degree in Counseling (Central Michigan University, 2003), and a PhD degree in Psychology, with Transpersonal Psychology Concentration (Sofia University, formerly Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, 2013). I started my teaching path at the age of 18 as a K-12 music teacher. In 2013, I began my contribution to Saybrook University. In 2016, I became an Assistant Program Director for the Department of Humanistic and Clinical Psychology; in 2017-an Interim Psychology Chair. Currently, as a core faculty member of the Department of Humanistic Psychology at Saybrook, I serve as a Full Professor of Psychology and Consciousness, Spirituality, and Integrative Health (CSIH) Specialization Director. I am a recipient of two recent Saybrook University awards: Presidential Award for Excellence (November 2021) and Exemplary Humanistic Educator Award (August 2024). My interests are deeply humanistic and transpersonal in nature. Outside of the halls of academia, I support adults' inner development by helping them to integrate fully their deeply evocative, Exceptional Human Experiences (EHEs). Such experiences often arise within and out of dreams, visions, visitations, spiritual practices, breathwork, visionary journeys, and reality-shattering UFO /ET /Alien /Non-Human Intelligences encounters. I support experiencers transpersonally in their quests for spiritual vitality, fulfillment, vibrant longevity, soulful sovereignty, wholeness, and ascension. I have a deep sense of appreciation for contemplative spirituality, mystical and esoteric traditions, and contemplative practices, and my current overarching focus is on exploring, potentiating, and integrating Exceptional Experiences (EEs) and Exceptional Human Experiences (EHEs), in general, and reality-shattering UFO /ET /Alien / Non-Human Intelligences encounters, in particular. My heart-centered art and interests include: (1) intuitive spiritual support and guidance; (2) transpersonal ways of knowing, embodiment, ascension mentoring, and spiritual consultation; (3) extreme, deeply evocative, and visionary transpersonal/holotropic states; (4) John E. Mack's transpersonal research on UFO / ET /Alien encounters and human transformation; (5) Stan Grof's expanded cartography of the psyche, holotropic states of consciousness, and GROF® Breathwork / Holotropic Breathwork®; (6) C.G. While Truth Fairy is away, Dr. T hosts this episode solo, welcoming Scott Hill, author of “Confrontation with the Unconscious: Jungian Depth Psychology and Psychedelic Experience”, who completed his PhD with a dissertation titled ‘Building a Jungian Framework for Understanding Psychedelic Induced Psychotic States' at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Dr. Hill shares his early transformative encounters with LSD in 1967, which, though initially ecstatic, devolved into psychologically traumatic events. These experiences led him on a lifelong journey of self-exploration, academic inquiry, and healing. Scott shares his journey very openly with Dr. T and they discuss how Scott's return to academia in Cailfornia, studying under Stan Grof and Ralph Metzner, deepened his understanding of his own experiences. They examine how Jung's concepts of the collective unconscious and archetypes reflect in intense psychedelic states. Scott details how key reading, Holotropic Breathwork, a medicine circle. and an MDMA-assisted therapy session at Burning Man, and MDMA-assisted therapy all helped heal his ongoing flashbacks. Dr. T and Scott Hill share a deep and revelatory conversation, at the end of which Scott expresses gratitude for the path he was forced onto in spite of how painfully it began. He describes writing and academic research as transformative tools and identifies scholarship as a spiritual practice in its own right. “Confrontation with the Unconscious: Jungian Depth Psychology and Psychedelic Experience”, Dr. Hill's book, is now foundational in psychedelic psychotherapy circles, and his insights are key to understanding much about psychedelic psychology. “As I read about the myths of Gilgamesh, Inanna,, Job and Christ, I was struck by the resonance between passages in those myths and my difficult psychedelic experiences. Given the Jungian view that myths are expressions of the archetypal unconscious, and given the resonance I experienced reading those myths, I started to wonder whether my terrifying trips, and perhaps those of others, might be understood, in Jung's words, as experiences of an archetypal nature.” Erik Davis stands tall at the intersection between mysticism, technology, and counterculture. He's one of my favorite writers, the author of many stupendous books, among them "TechGnosis: Myth, Magic, and Mysticism in the Age of Information," "Nomad Codes," as well as "High Weirdness" a highly entertaining book that explores 1970s counterculture and its relationship with altered states of consciousness. Erik is also an Esalen faculty member, having recently taught a course on Embodied Writing and Spiritual Practice. In this conversation, we went into his new book, "Blotter," an extended meditation on LSD blotter art and the culture that surrounds it. We also found time to veer off into a host of topics, including Terence McKenna, John C. Lilly, Dick Price, madness, Stan Grof, the spiritual emergency network, prep-school deadheads, the Village Voice, the Internet and Erik's theory that it kills subcultures, the phenomenon of what Erik calls "cannabis thinking," how he was never much of a "cannabis writer," tape machines and their place in the counterculture, the Merry Pranksters, Phillip K. Dick, Bay Area Poster art, the DEA and its own little zine - and much more. Erik is one of the cofounders of the Berkeley Alembic - a nonprofit bodymind center committed to experiments in transformation. https://berkeleyalembic.org/ You can also find his collected works at Techgnosis: https://techgnosis.com/

Be Honest with Dr Yana Date: 07.19.24 Ep. 34 Topic: In a RELATIONSHIP with a PREDATOR: Warning Signs Guest: Robert Mitchell Bio: Robert Mitchell M.A. lives in New York City. He received his B.A. in Religious Studies from Syracuse University in 1991 where he was initiated into Theta Chi Beta, the National Religious Studies Honors Society. At Syracuse he had the good fortune of studying with Dr. David Miller, whose expertise was Carl Jung's psychological theories regarding religious experience. Robert's specific focus was the manner that the western mystery schools influenced Jung's psychology of religious experience. Jung saw Astrology and Alchemy as the esoteric religions of antiquity. Of Astrology he once said, “It contains everything that I have found in my psychology, and I've yet to find if my psychology has anything to offer her older sister.” Jung's belief that all psychological struggles were at their core, religious in nature, was an organizing principle for Robert's studies, and for his present work. During his time at Syracuse, Robert attended his first ten day Vipassana meditation retreat and began his meditation practice. It's a practice that has continued to this day. Robert received his M.A. in Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco in 1994. While earning his Masters Degree, he acquired over two thousand hours in training as a psychotherapist, before deciding his future did not lie in conventional models of psychotherapy. At CIIS, he studied Transpersonal Models of consciousness with psychedelic pioneers Ralph Metzner, Stan Grof, and Michael Harner. At the same time, personal computers had made it possible for him to assemble astrology charts, and he found that as soon as he could print them, he could interpret them. Over the past 30 years he has worked with thousands of people from all walks of life, in several healing modalities. Originally, he used Astrology as a tool to demonstrate the identifiable structures in his client's consciousness which shaped their experiences. Over time, he has become more interested in identifying the organizing intelligence behind each person's circumstances, so that an ongoing dialogue could be created between his clients and that intelligence. Psychedelics when used properly, can be a catalyzing agency in promoting this dialogue. It is Robert's belief that a relationship with the numinous is an important aspect of the mental and physical health of each person, and the places where that experience is inhibited, is where personal difficulties, suffering and illness(both physical and emotional) emerge. His works aspires to inspire direct communication between his clients, and the invested intelligence that shapes their life. Once this relationship is established, it can continue on its own and be restorative, inspiring, practical, and directive.

Once this relationship is established, it can continue on its own and be restorative, inspiring, practical, and directive

Part 1 of Episode 150! Yay!! And now for something completely different. This episode is a bit of a departure from our regular show. We invite Alex Criddle and Cody Noconi, researchers into the psychedelic origins of Mormonism, to respond to the recent debate on the Mormon Book Reviews channel between ourselves and Mormon apologist, Brian Hales. Brian attempts to provide the apologetic response to the theory that Joseph Smith utilized psychedelics (entheogens) in the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in order to facilitate visionary experiences for the early Saints. Disinformation requires much greater effort than simply stating information so we do our best to debunk his debunking (rebunk the theory?). This one is a long haul so we split it into 2 episodes to make it a little more digestible. Show notes: Video version: https://youtu.be/3l0L1EHtQOo Support our research and outreach: https://www.patreon.com/SeerStonedProductions Original here: Psychedelics & Early Mormonism Theory Brian Hales Responds on Mormon Book Reviews https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uE7J0y_cPpg Further information: “The Higher Powers of Man” - Frederick M. Smith was a prophet of the RLDS Mormons and paternal grandson of the founder Joseph Smith. In 1918 Frederick published this Ph.D. dissertation breaking down altered states of consciousness from an early psychologist's perspective, specifically, religious states of ‘ecstacy' as he called it. A lengthy chapter devoted to peyote is particularly worth reading. “The Higher Powers: Fred M - Smith and the Peyote Ceremonies” - Shelby Barnes' 1995 paper highlighting the curious psychedelic interests of Frederick M. Smith. While Barnes does not make any direct connections to Joseph Smith and psychedelics, Barnes does note that Frederick's interests were an attempt to find the reliable keys to visionary revelation that his grandfather Joseph had demonstrated. “Restoration and the Sacred Mushroom” - Dr. Robert Beckstead's seminal research paper presented at the August 2007 Sunstone Symposium. Beckstead's paper was the first to propose the possibility that Joseph Smith used psychedelics to facilitate visionary experiences. “A 1920's Harvard Psychedelic Circle with a Mormon Connection: Peyote Use amongst the Harvard Aesthetes” Alan Piper's 2016 paper highlighting Frederick M. Smith's interest in psychedelics, and how as a standing Mormon prophet Fred was funding a 1920s group of Harvard students with peyote. “Revelation Through Hallucination: A discourse on the Joseph Smith-entheogen theory” - Bryce Blankenagel and Cody Noconi's 2017 follow-up paper further explores the hypothesis originally put forward by Dr. Robert Beckstead a decade earlier. “The Entheogenic Origins of Mormonism: A Working Hypothesis” - Dr. Robert Beckstead, Bryce Blankenagel, Cody Noconi, and Michael Winkelman's paper published in the Journal of Psychedelic Studies in June 2019. This was the first paper on the subject published in an academic journal. “Visions, Mushrooms, Fungi, Cacti, and Toads: Joseph Smith's Reported Use of Entheogens” Brian Hales' 2020 response paper to the one published in the Journal of Psychedelic Studies. As a believing Mormon engaged in academic apologetics, Hales details what he perceives to be holes in the proposed hypothesis. “The Psychedelic History of Mormonism, Magic, and Drugs” - Cody Noconi's book published in 2021. “Psychedelics as a Means of Revelation in Early and Contemporary Mormonism (Part 1)” Alex Criddle's 2023 paper that was originally presented at the Forms of Psychedelic Life conference at UC Berkeley (April 14-15, 2023). “Psychedelics as a Means of Revelation in Early and Contemporary Mormonism (Part 2)” A continuation of Alex Criddle's 2023 paper. “A Real Spiritual High: In Defense of Psychedelic Mysticism” An enlightening philosophical essay from Alex Criddle. In this episode, Joe interviews Joey Lichter, Ph.D.: professor in the Chemistry & Biochemistry department at Miami's Florida International University, and one of the few professors in the U.S. teaching a course about psychedelics at the collegiate level. He talks about his path towards the course, the challenge of creating a curriculum that covers everything in a few months, and the importance of teaching young minds about psychedelics the right away; shifting drug education from the “Just say no!” D.A.R.E. model to a more balanced, honest, and evidence-based approach. He aims for his students to think critically, ignore the hype, and see all possible angles with a fairly simple approach: Present the full story. He discusses: The importance of teaching history, from Stan Grof to MKUltra The work of David Nichols, David Nutt's drug harm scale, and the greatest lesson William Leonard Pickard took from LSD The representation of Spravato as a new drug, and his concerns with the over-medicalization of psychedelics Teaching about the complexities of Timothy Leary: Was he a positive or negative force? Decriminalization, legalization, and how he gets students to think about drug policy and more! For links and more, head to the show notes page.

In this episode, Joe interviews Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris: founder and head of the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London, founding director of the Neuroscape Psychedelics Division at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and founder of the Carhart-Harris Lab. A legendary researcher, he talks about his psychedelic origins: studying Freud, Jung, and eventually Stan Grof and depth psychology to try and better understand the unconscious. He discusses the growth of psychedelics and the cultural shifts he's noticed (especially in the U.S.), as well as what he's working on today: researching the influence of psychedelics on set and setting by studying experiences in both enriched and unenriched environments. He also talks about: Plasticity: how he defines it, how it relates to critical reopening periods, and how it's a fundamental thing that transcends the metrics we use to measure it Early LSD studies, the nervousness surrounding he and David Nutt dosing Ben Sessa, and the youthful energy that kept them going How plasticity could be exploited to help relieve chronic pain The potential of psychedelics to help with fibromyalgia and anorexia How psychedelic-assisted therapy brought care back to health care and more! UCSF is seeking survey volunteers, so if you've had more than three experiences with ketamine, MDMA, and psilocybin (must have experiences with all three) and want to contribute, do so here. We are delighted to host Robert Mitchell for episode 53 of the Mangu.tv podcast series. Robert is a religious and Jungian scholar, a Western psychedelic lineage holder, an astrologer, a practical mystic, a podcaster, and a writer. He received an undergraduate degree in Religious Studies from Syracuse University, and a Master in Counseling from The California Institute of Integral Studies. For thirty years, he has worked worldwide to strengthen people's relationship with the transpersonal intelligence that animates their lives. He uses tools of Western esoterica that include astrology, psychedelics, meditation and dreaming. His specific interest is working with the unique structure of the consciousness of the individual, while demythologizing the psychedelic experience, removing the need to fetishize it or make it something exotic. His motto is: “People don't need to use more Paychedelics, they need to be more Psychedelic.” Robert speaks about his upbringing in Los Angeles, where his parents were part of the bohemian, creative scene, and how the sudden loss of his father, at age 16, impacted him. He talks about his education, with various teachers from Jung to Stan Grof, Agehananda Bharati, Ram Dass and more. Giancarlo and Robert discuss mystical experiences and the doors one can access with altered states. Robert discusses the overlap in religion and astrology and his work using the intelligence of astrology to understand timings and cosmic consciousness. He shares a few profound case studies and speaks about the occasionally unrecognised value of astrology.
In this episode, we toast to the beginning of an exciting and hopefully groundbreaking 2024 by switching things up a bit. Christopher Koddermann, Co-Founder and Chair of Board of the International Therapeutic Psilocybin Rescheduling Initiative (ITPRI) will be conducting some interviews for PT, and in this episode, he does his first – with our Co-Founders, Joe Moore and Kyle Buller. Kyle tells the story of his fateful New Years Eve snowboarding trip that resulted in a near death experience and a complete change in his life's trajectory, and Joe discusses his more academic roots and how he and Kyle were united through their shared passion for the work of Stan Grof, holotropic breathwork, and transpersonal psychology. Psychedelics Today was created largely with no aims other than to promote transpersonal psychology and archive the best insights from their mentors, but has obviously turned into so much more, mostly from the simple goal of trying to spread the word through interesting conversations. They talk about the growth of PT; how they got involved in education; the harms of the drug war; why decriminalization isn't enough; where they see ‘the psychedelic renaissance' going; what has surprised them the most in the last few years; and what we're most proud of: Vital – how it came to be created, what's involved, the benefits of the retreats, the self-discovery they've witnessed, and what they've learned through two successful cohorts. The next edition of Vital begins on January 23, and we've extended applications until January 14, so if you've been curious if Vital is the answer you've been looking for, now is the time to act! How does breathwork interact with our nervous system, access memories and help integrate traumatic memories? How has it got results treating auto-immune disease, addiction, agrophobia, PTSD and depression? How can it help sleep, detoxification, digestion, immunity, and taking control of negative thought patterns. In this episode we have the hugely popular practice of Breathwork to look into. After millennia of it being used in bodily practices like martial arts and yoga, conscious breathing was launched into our modern scientific world view by the work of psychologist Stan Grof, who developed Holotropic Breathing in the 1960's at Harvard, see our Transpersonal Psychology episode for more on that; Breathwork continued to gain in popularity following the focus on the lungs and breathing in near regulation proposed by Dr. Stephen Porges in his Polyvagal Theory, see our devoted episode with Dr. Porges for detail on that; And gained further in popularity with Dr. Pete Levine's development of Somatic Experiencing, who I am delighted to announce will be coming on the show in the next series, so look out for that. So having been present for some time in the trauma community, in the last few years the practice has exploded onto the wellbeing scene as well because of all its benefits both physiologically and psychologically. So who better to talk to about this than expert in a wide range of Breathwork and body-based therapies, Rebecca Dennis. She facilitates workshops, events and retreats alongside her public speaking and individual sessions. She is a gifted speaker and coach, specialising in breathwork, trauma release, somatic modalities, polyvagal theory and nervous system regulation. Part of her wide popularity is due to her having written three successful books on the topic, the latest being a new edition of Let it Go, “Let It Go and Breathe – A Practical Guide To Breathwork” which has been featured in Amazon and Sunday Times Best Sellers, and which we'll be discussing today. And she has also collaborated with Google, BBC, Stylist magazine and Sweaty Betty. If you are interested in astrology, then this episode is for you. After studying archetypal astrology with Rick Tarnas last semester for my PhD, I have become fascinated with planetary archetypes, and wish to convey the scientific substance of astrology to as many people as possible. Astrology isn't something you "believe in" - that's like saying you "believe" the Earth is round. We get into this in the podcast. My guest today is the archetypal astrologer Dr Renn Butler, who studied with Stanislav Grof and Richard Tarnas at the Esalen Institute in California beginning in 1980, certifying as a Holotropic Breathwork® facilitator in 1989, and recertifying in Grof® Breathwork in 2023. We also talk about Stan Grof's work and his collaboration with Tarnas on the perinatal matrices.Renn offers workshops in British Columbia and abroad, as well as archetypal astrology consultations with clients around the world. I had a session with him this year and could not recommend him highly enough!! Renn's first book, Pathways to Wholeness, is about astrology and psychedelic experiences, was published in 2014, followed by The Archetypal Universe in 2018, which focuses on dreams, and The Astrology of Love and Relationships in 2022, which is about relationships. Renn received his PhD in Archetypal Astrology and Transpersonal Psychology from Ubiquity University in 2022, and has also worked part time as a health care worker with physically, mentally, and emotionally challenged adults for over thirty years and lives in Victoria, B.C.For more information, please go to his website at the link below -->www.rennbutler.comIf you are interested in doing one of his courses, see the links below -->22-week course in Archetypal and Holotropic Astrology (starts September 30th 2023)www.rennbutler.com/online-courses Our 8-week course in Grof Studies (starts October 1 2023)www.grofstudies.com/courses ANN – Archetypal News Networkhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPhz4c6KHp5LP81F-Ky-2sg Grof Legacy Training Internationalhttps://grof-legacy-training.com/ ........................................................................For anything related to me, please go to https://www.arabellathais.com
Our guest today is a legendary thinker, author, and philosopher. Ken Wilber has spent decades understanding how humans are all interconnected with each other, decoding through dozens of beautifully written books, how we fit into the greater, massive, picture that is the expanding universe. He's an absolute pioneer, a visionary, and that barely scratches the surface of his work.He joins Dave to outline his newest book—Finding Radical Wholeness: The Integral Path to Unity, Growth, and Delights—and offers up a supporting stream of consciousness which rivals any that you'd find, on any podcast, in depth of insight and emotional impact. His words resonate with a truth and wonder which will leave you inspired from beginning to end, and well beyond.00:00:38 — Finding Radical Wholeness with Ken Wilber • Ken Wilber's Amazon Author Page• Different ways to explain the general ideas of the world• Read: Finding Radical Wholeness: The Integral Path to Unity, Growth, and Delights• Achieving wholeness in our day-to-day• Ken's first experience of wholeness with the universe• Does a dog have Buddha-nature?• Studying the work of D.T. What is the protocol for psychedelic therapy? How does it work? Who is it appropriate for? Today we have the interesting topic to look into, of how psychedelic compounds are now being used in psychotherapy. With promising results in clinical trials from Imperial College around the mid 2010's, a flourish of trials at other medical schools across the world has seen a renaissance of the psychedelic movement for treating, particularly depression and PTSD, that was started by transpersonal psychologists like Stan Grof in the 1960's before then being banned. Along with this renaissance has come interest from pharmaceutical companies and psychonauts, psychotherapists and members of the general public suffering from treatment resistant conditions. With all this activity there is confusion about what the results from the studies actually show, how the treatment should be done safely, ethically and with lasting results and who to be contacting if you want to try it out. So I thought it was important to speak about these matters here for anyone interested in getting a data led picture of the fast evolving situation, among all the noise out there on the internet. Fortunately my guest today is a clinical psychologist who's been at the centre of the field since the beginning of the renaissance, and not just as a researcher but as a hands on psychologist in the therapy room with the subjects at all stages of the process, Dr. Rosalind Watts. Dr. Watt's work as the Clinical psychologist Lead for Imperial College London's psilocybin trials, have made her one of the most prominent voices and minds in the field of psychedelic research. She has been named as one of the 50 Most Influential People in Psychedelics; however, what sets Dr Watts apart is her focus on integration, harm-reduction and inclusion in the psychedelic space. Apart from treating she also builds tools and structures to foster connectedness after psychedelic experiences, finding inspiration for their design from nature. The most recent of which is the integration community she's created - ACER Integration. In this episode, I introduce the new series on the effect of the pre and perinatal period of us as babies, children and adults. This fits alongside the upcoming publication of my book, The Emotional Life of Babies. In future episodes in this series, I'll be having conversations about healing from stress in utero, birth and the postnatal period for babies, children and adults, and the effect of not healing can have. I share about my own journey of realising how much my birthing experience, being born at 30 weeks and in an incubator for 6 weeks, affected my childhood and teenage years, and how, over the decades after that, I reconnected with feelings of grief, loneliness, powerlessness, terror, and the deep pain of my experiences not being understood. I talk about the difference between healing from the effects of our birth in adulthood compared to healing whilst a baby or child, with the support of our parents. I include the work of people like Stan Grof, Thomas Verny and Michel Odent, and the powerful effects their work had on me and my understanding of what babies experience. I share about HypnoBirthing and Calmbirth, and the huge shift I made from being terrified of giving birth to being completely calm during birthing. I talk about posterior birth and The Lifting Technique by Janie McCoy King, who wrote Back Labor No More! I also explain how I supported my son to heal from his very fast posterior birth on the day he was born. I talk about the will work of The Marion Method and how the timing of our birth can also continue to affect us later in life and the patterns that can continue.

This week on Tub Talks, we soak in with one of my Esalen and Big Sur elders, Vicki Topp. Vicki has practiced bodywork for many decades alongside our first Tub Talks guest, Deborah Anne Medow. Vicki shares her journey of landing in Big Sur, as well as her immersion into the world of bodywork (massage therapy and other practices). She even demonstrates her skill set on my body during the bath! In the immediate aftermath of an eye injury the evening before our soak, Vicki opens the conversation with her original concept of something she calls ‘alternative futures': a theory that guides her through encountering the possibilities of how to navigate life experiences, including the difficult ones. Falling pregnant in college, Vicki dropped out of law school and found herself in Big Sur. From working with elementary school children at Pacific Valley School in the south coast of Big Sur to starting the massage program at Ventana in Big Sur, Vicki details how Big Sur has always “kept her.” She compares her life in Big Sur to a long term relationship, seeing how her dynamic has shifted and adapted over the years. She tells us about her relationship to learning, to housing, to dating, to boats. She talks about losing friends to death as a result of brainwashing in experimental groups in the 70's. She talks about losing friends now, as she enters a different phase of life. Vicki uses bodywork as her way of impacting society, teaching her technique across the world. Vicki's experience of practicing bodywork is defined by working with a client, as opposed to working on someone. She describes bodywork metaphorically. She sees parallels to life through something she calls ‘reach patterns.' Reach patterns are both physical and emotional. They can delineate the way we reach for our dreams, or expand the length of our arms from our body. Vicki claims to have grown reach patterns in her body, while being limited in her life goals. Vicki gives us permission to be unapologetically ourselves through her demonstration of how. Vicki paves the way by showing us how to be a strong, independent, intelligent woman. Her vulnerability and honesty about being lost in a nowness is permissive too. So soak in her wisdom, and learn a little bit more about Big Sur culture and the stewarding of the land through living as Vicki Topp! In this episode, on the eve of Bicycle Day, Victoria and Kyle interview two long-standing icons of visionary psychedelic art: Alex and Allyson Grey. They talk about the LSD trip that saved Alex's life, connected him to Allyson, inspired his art, and even made him change his name; his decades-in-the-making “Sacred Mirrors” project of 21 7-foot tall pieces depicting the complex layers of human existence; the interconnectedness of life; the history of psychedelic art; how imagination and non-ordinary states help us connect with the divine; and the value of art in conveying the mystical experience. Alex and Allyson are the Co-Founders of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, an interspiritual church/retreat center in upstate New York that, after years of work, is debuting Entheon: an art sanctuary and psychedelic reliquary featuring much of their art and work from favorite artists, a shrine to Tool (who Alex has worked with for most of their career), and a collection of relics from psychedelic legends that includes Albert Hofmann's glasses, art signed by Stan Grof and the Shulgins, and even Timothy Leary's ashes. Entheon opens on June 3, on the anniversary of the first acid trip the Greys took together, which gave them a framework for understanding life and an inspiration for art they still follow to this day. And in honor of Bicycle Day, Alex talks about two pieces dedicated to Albert Hofmann, and continues his Bicycle Day tradition of reading a statement Hofmann made a year before he passed about psychedelics being the “absolute highest importance to consciousness change.” In celebration of Albert Hofmann and the gift he gave us, and with inspiration from the incredibly complex and beautiful art Alex and Allyson create, have a happy, safe, and creative Bicycle Day! www.psychedelicstoday.com
This week the I am reading from John Audette's book 'Loved by the Light: True Stories of Divine Intervention & Providence' and 'The Scottish UFO Casebook' by Steve Hammond.John AudetteJohn Audette nearly died traumatically seven times. Yet, each time his life was saved by angels. Loved by the Light chronicles an extraordinary life filled with divine interventions, angelic encounters, near-death and shared-death experiences, as well as witnessing the remarkable deathbed visions of others.John outgrew his agnosticism when evidence about God's existence became so overpowering, he could reach no other conclusion. From a life-saving physical encounter with Archangel Michael to the uncanny timing of the death of Apollo 14 astronaut, Dr. Edgar Mitchell, this intimate account of the author's spiritual awakening may help readers to build or strengthen their relationship with God.What's more, this book offers pragmatic guidance about how to experience your own life-changing spiritual epiphany. This week I'm talking to John Audette about his book 'LOVED BY THE LIGHT: TRUE STORIES OF DIVINE INTERVENTION AND PROVIDENCE'. John Audette nearly died traumatically seven times. It also introduces a structured exercise called God for a Day designed to transform oneself into a perfect expression of God's love for all things.Loved by the Light is an important source for information about God, the afterlife and the meaning of existence outside the framework of traditional religion. For our kickoff episode of our 3rd season, we're honored to present this touching, illuminating, and entertaining dialogue with 40-year veteran therapist Bob Edelstein, LMFT, in which he guides us through life's big questions (AKA existential themes) through an Existential-Humanistic lens. Bob shares his amazing story of coming of age as a human and therapist in the 1960s during the modern-to-postmodern shift. Highlights include his life-changing reading of Carl Rogers' Freedom to Learn as a teacher-in-training, being ripped apart by primal therapy, becoming a therapist through “the paraprofessional route”, working in the Haight, making space around the need to achieve, training with Jim Bugental and LSD researcher Stan Grof, and being ok with the idea of dying. Bob is such an authentic human being in every interaction, and you'll feel that come through as he teaches us about E-H through his own transforming views. If you're a fan of Carl Rogers, Maslow, Jim Bugental, Viktor Frankl, Kirk Schneider, Rollo May, and/or Irvin Yalom, this is the episode for you.Bob Edelstein, LMFT has been a therapist and consultant since 1973, practicing in Oregon since 1984. When you look at the world, it can feel like we're in a precarious moment. If you've listened to past episodes, you know we call this the meta-crisis — an era of overlapping and interconnected crises like climate change, polarization, and the rise of decentralized technologies like synthetic biology. It can feel like we're on a path to destroy ourselves. That's why we're talking to Rick Doblin, the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, or MAPS. They're a nonprofit focused on educating and researching the benefits of using psychedelic therapy to address PTSD and promote humane ways of relating worldwide.Doblin's vision is for nothing less than a transformation of society through psychedelic-assisted therapy – not for the drugs themselves, but for their ability to help us react to one another with compassion, appreciate differences, and accept criticism.Given the perma-crisis we face, it's provocative to think about a tool that, when prescribed and used safely, could help us overcome rivalrous dynamics out in the world and on social media. If we rescue our hijacked brains, we can heal from the constant trauma inflation we get online, and shrink the perception gap that splits us into tribes. Both MAPS and Center for Humane Technology want to understand what helps minds heal and be free. We invite you to keep an open mind about a different kind of humane technology as you listen to this episode. Correction: Doblin attributes a quote to Stan Grof about psychedelics helping your ego be “transparent to the transcendent.” In his book Pathways to Bliss, Joseph Campbell wrote, "When a deity serves as a model for you, your life becomes transparent to the transcendent as long as you realize the inspiring power of that deity. This means living not in the name of worldly success and achievement, but rather in the name of the transcendent, letting the energy manifest through you.” Grof was likely paraphrasing Campbell's work and applying it to psychedelics. —"One of the pillars of integrating psychedelics is exploring the relationship we have with death. This is a matter of integrating the reality of death—death in general and your death in particular—into your experience of living. Integrating death, as a part of the larger integration of your work with psychedelics, is ultimately a spiritual preparation. “There is no fundamental difference between the preparation for death and the practice of dying,” Stan Grof has wisely said, “and spiritual practice leading to enlightenment.” We believe humanity's intention in the universe is to embody the experience of understanding, compassion, kindness, peace with the unknown and ultimately unconditional love, and going forth to share it. Enlightenment is what happens when there is nothing left to grasp, nothing left to fear, nothing but love. There may still be questions but there is no grasping for answers. There is awareness. If you open the cracks in awareness there is love.” Valeria interviews Dr. Ryan Westrum — the author of “The Psychedelics Integration Handbook” Ryan Westrum, Ph.D., M.A. works as a psychedelic integration therapist in the Twin Cities of Minnesota and through video conference internationally. His primary focus is working with individuals integrating non-ordinary state experiences for healing and personal transformation. He also is the host of The Psychedelic Psychologist podcast.
