In this conversation with Debi Lewis, Enneagram 4, we discuss the Ennea-Dragons and yoga. Ennea-Dragon 1. The Reformer / Perfectionist, who wants so much to be a good dragon, in spite of his/her reputation for throwing fire in frustration from time to time. Ennea-Dragon 2. The Helper / Giver, who wants so much to love and be loved, and finds that he often gives too much and then ends up being resentful and exhausted. Ennea-Dragon 3. The Achiever, who strives for success and mastery, and finds that he is often so consumed by this drive to succeed, aren't dragons all supposed to hoard piles of gold? Ennea-Dragon 4. The Individualist, who feels different and alone so often, is often paralyzed so much that he hides out in the hills and is hard to find. Ennea-Dragon 5. The Investigator, who feels safest when he understands the Ways of Life and Dragons in Great Detail. This dragon is very educated and knowledgeable, and since dragons are known to live a long time, has spent a good deal of it collecting information. Ennea-Dragon 6. The Loyalist, who struggles with anxiety and is a Worst Case Scenario expert, and therefore is very organized and alert for any hint of trouble. Ennea-Dragon 7. The Enthusiast. You would think that this dragon doesn't have a care in the world. Flitting and frolicking and always ready for a fun time. Ennea-Dragon 8. The Boss, who loves a good fight and can breathe fire masterfully. Ennea-Dragon 9. The Peacemaker wants above all else to avoid conflict and to be surrounded by peace. One of my ultimate goals for this podcast has always been to highlight the really cool work that yoga professionals are doing in their local communities to make a difference. There seems to be a big public perception that yoga folks are fairly shallow, with all of our concerns being about how we look in beachwear while doing crazy moves during sunset. But anyone who has taken 10 seconds to go deeper knows that yoga professionals are good, loving, caring people who are committed to making a positive impact in the world. With that let me introduce you to my friend Gina Barrett, the winner of the International Associal of Yoga Therapist's SEVA award for 2022. She is working with a group of yoga teachers on the border between Mexico and the United States, sharing yoga with families and children who are living in camps awaiting permission to enter the US as refugees and asylum seekers. This work involves a lot of dedication, skill, and training in trauma-informed practices to be able to facilitate yoga classes safely in that environment. Listen to all of Gina's offerings, and make sure you donate to her NGO if you can.RESOURCES:Casa del Paz SLV's website: https://www.casadepazslv.org/Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy: https://pryt.com/Our website: https://www.workinginyoga.com/
Nick Beem, co-founder of Grateful Yoga, talks with J about the implications of yoga as ritual vs technology. They discuss the contrasts between Nicks training in Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy and ParaYoga, why framing yoga as a set of tools for self improvement is lacking, becoming fatigued by intellectual gyrations, intention empowering practice more than some universal metaphysics, recognizing our animistic ancestry and a More Than Human world, and learning to ride the slippery edge where doing and surrender blend together. In this episode, I interviewed Soleil Hepner. Soleil is a certified yoga therapist, educator, speaker and the former Program Director of the Phoenix Rising School of Yoga Therapy. Today she continues on as Emeritus Faculty and also works in private practice in San Diego where she offers individual, couples and group yoga therapy, along with coaching and online sessions. The topic of our conversation was “ambivalence.” Soleil embraced the power of ambivalence herself when she announced the decision to retire from her position as Program Director with Phoenix Rising. She sensed that others wanted to know about the next best thing she would move on to, and that there was discomfort around not knowing. She embraces this ambivalence or “in the between” and encourages her clients to do so as well.Support the show (https://innerpeaceyogatherapy.com)

In the decades that followed the Korean War, over 250,000 Korean children were sent abroad, to be adopted by foreigners, for many reasons, but most prominently was the incredible weight of economic hardship facing these parents, and all of South Korea during those years. It is referred to as the Han Diaspora. Born in Daegu, South Korea to Korean parents, Hojung was given up for adoption at a very young age. She was adopted and raised by Flemish-Belgian parents in Europe, who, shortly after her adoption, moved to Madison, Wisconsin. And although she's traveled extensively all over the world, and speaks several languages fluently, Hojung reveals that she has never truly felt like she belonged to any people, place, country, or nationality. Her initial introduction to yoga, as you'll hear, was astonishingly cathartic. At the age of 16, she discovered Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy, which led her to explore various Hatha Yoga traditions for the next 10 years, before beginning Mysore-style Ashtanga Yoga in 1999 in New York City, with Guy Donahaye. Hojung shares with us her incredible story about her personal search for identity and meaning. And her eventual somewhat tragic reunification with her birth parents. You can listen to a full account of her adoption story on a podcast episode recorded back in December 2018, on a podcast called: ADAPTED. We spoke also of the emotional concept called “Han” in Korean, which refers to a deep nearly indescribable feeling of sorrow, melancholy, or grief that seems to be an essential element of Korean identity. A feeling Hojung felt her whole life, without being able to give it a name, until she began returning to her motherland, and reunited with her birth family between the years 2012-2017. Hojung mentions a Korean film, Seopyeonje, where the story indirectly depicts this Han quality to the viewers. Hojung's own story forces us to ask deeply profound questions like: What happens when your spiritual practices are unable to nourish you during a time of crisis? Where do you turn? What do you do? In this extra long Holiday Special, we are taken through an incredible journey of self-discovery. We catch glimpses into how culture works to construct one's identity, and how yoga can work to heal deeply unconscious wounds, when we become present to what's arising. Hojung's story is a deeply moving and emotional journey, where we are given the opportunity to come face to face with the reflection of our own self. What is an Emotional Release in Yoga? What do you do when you have an emotional release in yoga? When I trained with Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy as a yoga therapist, yoga teacher and group facilitator my teacher and mentor there, Elissa Cobb explained all about how emotions get held in our bodies. In fact I trained for several years as a yoga therapist, yoga teacher and group facilitator on how to help people to release emotions that were held in the body. In this video I am going to talk to you about how emotions get held in the body, why emotions come out in yoga classes, what to do when emotions come out in yoga classes, what not to do when emotions come out in yoga classes and some general energy emotional maintenance that you can do so that emotions don't start coming out at inopportune times. Becky Watson is a mom of 2, yoga teacher, yoga therapist, and author. She's been teaching yoga for over 14 years and a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist for 4 years. When her oldest child left home at age 16 to finish high school at a boarding school, Becky knew that her time as a full-time mom was quickly coming to an end. While she loved teaching yoga, she also knew that there is much more to transformation than teaching people to do a pretty yoga pose. She began to study yoga therapy through Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy after her daughter moved out and at the same time she also began to plan her post child-rearing life. So far, the empty nest phase has included lots of exploration, adventure and doing new things. One of those new things was writing a book. In 2019, Becky published Foot Yoga: A Guide to Happier, Healthier Feet. This book came from her many years of teaching people in her yoga classes how to help their feet be stronger and more flexible. Currently, Becky uses the skills to help other women create change in their lives through both yoga & yoga therapy. Transitions that moms go through when their kids leave and how to reconnect with themselvesFinding focus and purpose when their kids leave the nestHow you can start a business no matter what age you areBecky Watson is a mom of 2, a yoga therapist, life mentor and author. After my daughter left home to finish high school at a boarding school, I knew that my time as a full-time mom was soon coming to an end. I'd spent almost 20 years arranging my life around my kids and I had no idea who I was anymore or what to do with myself after they left. That sent me on a journey of self-discovery where I discovered Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy. Using the tools that I learned in yoga therapy on myself, I began to create what I wanted to do with my time as an empty nester. I now use those same tools to help other moms find their focus, passion and purpose again. I believe life doesn't end when your kids move out. It simply changes. 1:15 Introduction to Michael Lee 2:15 Michael explains why he has more faith in yoga than ever before. Mental health workers and therapists are now taking yoga therapy training as they see the benefits. Neuroscience research is now supporting the body/mind connection. Research on consciousness. Helping people come into the present and become aware of their own insights. 8:30 In the 1980's there was a great flourishing of yoga therapy (Dean Ornish's study on reversing heart disease with lifestyle changes including yoga, Michael Lee began Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy and the International Association of Yoga Therapists began in 1989.) Michael explains his own deep experience with yoga that led to some important insights that he carried with him since he was a child. Michael and other well-known yogis knew that yoga could help even if they didn't know why. 17:05 About 10 years ago, neuroscience and psychological research started explaining why yoga can help people change. The connection of neuroscience, psychology, yoga philosophy, and Buddhism/mindfulness began to explain what everyone was experiencing. 18:42 The changes in Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy training over the years. Started as very experiential and has gradually added knowledge components as the research start's clarifying the results of the experiential learning. 21:16 Michael recently talked to astronauts about the overview effect. As astronauts contemplate the earth when they are in space, they begin to change. They understand that there is one small blue marble that all of us live on and they become much more interested in environmental causes, or philanthropy because they understand the world's fragility. 25:38 What is the future of yoga? Yoga therapy is becoming much more accepted in the medical realm as it becomes a modality for helping cancer surgical patients recover and to help with the changes needed in patients and their caregivers. Huge increase in interest in yoga therapy in Japan. 30:00 Difference between yoga and yoga therapy. In essence there is little difference but in practice yoga therapy requires deeper knowledge and the skills are quite different.
