The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 367: Money Matters & Budgeting with Jenifer Parker    Description: How do you feel about budgeting and money as a yoga teacher? What is your system for tracking income and expenses – is it working? How can you decrease your expenses and/or increase your income? These are some questions Jennifer Parker answers in this insightful money conversation.   Jenifer Parker has been a yoga teacher for more than 21 years and is a qualified instructor in 4 lineages: Kripalu, Sivananda, Krishnamacharya, and Thai Yoga. She meets students where they are, teaching a traditional, integrated approach. In general she teaches within the Krishnamacharya lineage, but offers a unique insight into the similarities and differences in practice across lineages. Currently, she offers private lessons, corporate and private group classes, and a few public community classes in Te-Whanganui-a-Tara, Aotearoa (Wellington, New Zealand).   In this episode, Shannon and Jennifer dive deeper into money matters and budgeting for yoga teachers. Jennifer explains how to get consistent with our budgeting, how to adapt it to our needs and our yoga business, and why it's so important for yoga teachers. Have you found success in tracking your income before your expenses, and if so, how has it impacted your financial stability? What methods have you used to increase your income beyond teaching classes? Do you prefer using budgeting apps or spreadsheets, and why? How often do you check your bank statements, and what insights have you gained from this practice? In what ways do you see parallels between budgeting and yoga, particularly in terms of consistency and adaptability? Have you been able to build a buffer of savings, and if so, what strategies have helped you achieve this? When do you think it's appropriate for yoga teachers to consider taking on part-time work, and how can one navigate the potential stigma associated with it? Have you ever negotiated rent for your teaching space, or explored alternative venues? What advice would you offer to others in similar situations? Lastly, how do you harness the power of your network and student referrals to grow your yoga community and increase your teaching opportunities?   Quotes from this episode: "It's OK to make income teaching yoga.'   "It's really helpful if people can actually sit down and look at the numbers and then make for themselves a clear decision. Is this something that I want to do full time all the time or is it something that I just wanna do sometimes?"   "Let's talk about different ways of approaching the financials of this business that are based in living our values rather than just ‘I made a beautiful abundance collage and the universe will take care of me'."   "The first step of budgeting is: what are my costs?"   "The budget will work for you if it works the way you work."   "If you're in a place where you can say I'm not gonna be too proud, all of a sudden now there's infinite opportunity."

The Reformer / Perfectionist, who wants so much to be a good dragon, in spite of his/her reputation for throwing fire in frustration from time to time. Ennea-Dragon 2.  The Helper / Giver, who wants so much to love and be loved, and finds that he often gives too much and then ends up being resentful and exhausted. Ennea-Dragon 3.  The Achiever, who strives for success and mastery, and finds that he is often so consumed by this drive to succeed, aren't dragons all supposed to hoard piles of gold? Ennea-Dragon 4. The Individualist, who feels different and alone so often, is often paralyzed so much that he hides out in the hills and is hard to find. Ennea-Dragon 5. The Investigator, who feels safest when he understands the Ways of Life and Dragons in Great Detail. This dragon is very educated and knowledgeable, and since dragons are known to live a long time, has spent a good deal of it collecting information. Ennea-Dragon 6. The Loyalist, who struggles with anxiety and is a Worst Case Scenario expert, and therefore is very organized and alert for any hint of trouble. Ennea-Dragon 7. The Enthusiast. You would think that this dragon doesn't have a care in the world. Flitting and frolicking and always ready for a fun time. Ennea-Dragon 8. The Boss, who loves a good fight and can breathe fire masterfully. Ennea-Dragon 9. The Peacemaker wants above all else to avoid conflict and to be surrounded by peace. Welcome to Episode #56 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! My conversation with Roxana Corojan, a yoga teacher from Romania, was so real and vulnerable, as we dove into how yoga can hold you, and can be a remedy for that which ails you, and that which you struggle against. I hope that this conversation delight in how yoga can be a playground, and how embodiment is empowerment. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about embodiment, play, and about turning your practice into a process, then this is the conversation for you. Roxana is a yoga teacher from Romania, was actually trained by Carlos Romero in Bali - who is a previous guest on the Wild Yoga Tribe podcast on Episode #34. Roxana is a yoga teacher and Thai yoga massage therapist who is deeply passionate about Somatics and Embodiment. She loves to mix mindfulness with play, and to bring yoga to alternative places. Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/wildyogatribe What to expect in the Yoga In Romania episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Roxana came to yoga through her sister's advice, and although she didn't like it at first— she quickly came to love it. After experiencing severe burnout, she quit her job and headed off to Bali. She met Carlos Romero there, and fell in love with Thai Yoga massage, and with her practice. Although she never planned on becoming a yoga teacher, that was where the path led her. Roxana seeks to create a home and a strong sense of community with each yoga class she teaches, and she felt in her bones she had found the right space to open a yoga studio in Romania. She opened her yoga studio and created beautiful rituals of sharing tea and practicing yoga, or sharing desserts, or doing tarot readings and yoga. Roxana realized, a long time ago, that community is what brings her true happiness. Though, Roxana realized that to be a yoga teacher means having ten jobs at once and to be a studio owner, she felt like some of her joy was diminished with the fatigue of doing too many things. She decided to close her yoga studio and to work with other yoga studies as a freelancer. I found it so powerful how Roxana said, “To be a yoga teacher is to be a composer of experiences.” And when we dove into the world of embodiment— WOW! She talked about yoga as a playground, to be able to play with the boundaries of form and to explore. Through embodiment she was able to touch into her sensuality, and felt waves of creativity and embodiment. One of Roxana's mantras is, “Turn your practice into a process.” For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Romania episode? The mat is a safe space no matter where you are Being held by yoga Yoga as a remedy for panic attacks Seek slowness Opening and then closing a yoga studio To be a yoga teacher is to be a composer of experiences Embodiment is empowerment Yoga is a playground Connect with Roxana Corojan https://www.instagram.com/hearthe.yoga/ Want more? She is an ex-corrections officer turned holistic health practitioner providing SomaVeda® Thai Yoga Therapy with an added twist of Elemental Meridian Coaching. After years of working in a chronically stressful environment and living with trauma on a daily basis, she had the opportunity to take a month off and travel to India to restart her personal health and wellness journey, and to reconnect with herself. Her personal experience working as a corrections officer gave her a unique ability to understand and work with individuals (mostly women) who were looking for a deeper way to heal both physically and emotionally from their own trauma that traditional western therapies couldn't help them with. Her passion is to teach people to recognize that their physical pain could be connected to emotional blocks that result in tension in the body. She is acutely aware that when we bring awareness to these emotional blocks, it can drastically release what we hold in our bodies. SomaVeda® Thai Yoga Therapy is a combination of yoga-assisted stretching, breath work, and acupressure to identify the blocks in the meridian channels. Arielle then takes the extra step to delve deeper by teaching the awareness of what the meridian channels mean to let clients take an active role in working outside of sessions. In the start of 2020 with so many people being told to isolate themselves, Arielle provided a safe and tranquil space to allow clients to receive bodywork when other massage therapists were forced to close their doors. In a time when uncertainty was high, she made it her mission to allow others to feel empowered with how they wanted to support their health. Moving through the next two years, Arielle expanded Tranquility Rising's studio space to incorporate other women holistic health practitioners to create a thriving community, all focused around client care and how clients choose to continue their healing journey. Support the show

Du erfährst in diesem Gespräch, was Thai Yoga ist und was es so besonders macht, warum Berührung für unser Leben existenziell ist und wie du mit Thai Yoga dein Stresslevel reduzieren kannst.

David Wells introduces Thai Yoga, “Reusi Dat Ton,” and its place within the traditions of Buddhist Yoga and Mahasiddhas. Tracing its development from India into Nepal, Tibet and the Ancient Lanna Kingdom of Southeast Asia, he discusses how wind is managed in “Reusi Dat Ton” from breathing techniques and visualization to self-massage, joint mobilization and full body exercises. The video presentation features images of techniques as depicted in traditional artwork including: statues, murals, and illustrations from manuscripts. This presentation is part of the Buddhism and Breath Summit, which took place online in 2021, with a group of researchers exploring Buddhist practices of working with the breath or the “winds” of the body. The event was co-hosted by Frances Garrett and Pierce Salguero, and co-sponsored by the Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Centre for Buddhist Studies at the University of Toronto and Jivaka.net. Join the author of Thai Acupressure, Noam Tyroler, for a discussion about the Magic of Thai Acupressure for Health. Noam is located in Israel and I was fortunate enough to have this discussion with him through zoom. I had been searching for several years for a comprehensive book detailing the acupressure and energy line work of traditional Thai Massage. I was thrilled to find this book 10 years ago and find it is invaluable for those that practice this ancient art. Join us for a discussion about the history of Thai Massage and why is practical, useful and beneficial in our modern era.Read Noam's bio here:In 1989, I took my first Thai massage course in the school of the Old Medicine Hospital in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. After several years of training, including five additional courses in Thailand, I became a Thai massage practitioner in 1992.Three years later, I opened the Thai massage department at the Reidman International College. This is the largest college for holistic medicine in Israel and with 8,000 students, it’s probably one of the largest in the world.Since 1998, I also teach Thai acupressure and have trained hundreds of students in this Thai art. For many years, I have been searching for a book on the lines and points formulas of medical Thai massage. I could not find such a book, and finally decided to write one on my own.I worked full time for two wonderful years writing this book. Writing a course textbook based on an ancient oral teaching is an exciting challenge.I have established the School in 2008 in order to publish the book and future study materials. It’s translated already to Spanish, French, German, Turkish, Russian, Mandarin and Japanese. I plan to translate it also to Hebrew and Arabic.I have also created a comprehensive 100 hours video guide and published a second book – Yoga Massage for Pregnancy, Labor and Postpartum. I plan to also release (hopefully in 2020) a Video Guide to Prenatal Yoga Massage.Additional complementary study materials are needed and will hopefully be created in the few next coming years. I hope to make the Medical Massage of Thailand accessible to practitioners of Thai Massage and of any method of manual therapy. I am based in Metula, a small town in Northern end of Israel on our border with Lebanon.Below are some links that you can access some of Noam's work.1. Changing the Face of Yoga Podcast

Introduction   1:52 Interest in Thai Yoga – more authentic than yoga as it is currently taught. It is called Ruesri dat ton. The monks in Thailand practice this yoga. Uses the breath, great attention to detail, build pressure and then with poses let the pressure dissipate. 5:57 Michael teaches Thai yoga   principles but  not Thai yoga postures in his classes. Works with the breath, don’t push breath down to the belly but rather keep in thoracic area to stretch out the thoracic area which provides support to the pose. People of size often have large belles which push down and restrict the movement of the rib cage. 8:20 Modification for large-bodied people: Using forward bend as an example, forward bending is difficult because the belly is in the way  and to get fingers to toes requires extensive stretching of the hamstrings. Bend the knees and may feel opening in the thoracic rib cage. Belly will push into diaphragm and back opens more. Belly used as a catalyst to open up rib cage. Child pose as an example, the purpose is to fold the joints and then let the weight of the body sink into the pose. Many (often men) have trouble with flattening the tops of the feet in child pose and need something (blanket, mat) under their ankles to get into the pose. Use Chair for the head. Play with the movement, come out when uncomfortable and then back into the pose. 14:15 Works with students in yoga classes and also as massage therapists. Has yoga teachers coming to him for help with injuries – wrists, lower back, neck and shoulders. Repetitive movement that goes unchecked can lead to injury. Self- practice is for self-exploration, self-relfection, paying attention to the body. 16:50 Is yoga more accessible now? When Michael started 20 years ago, there was little interest in teaching large-bodied students. Only 3 teachers in his area were teaching large bodied students (lives in NYC)  Started his own studio because of the lack of opportunity. Now included in norms of yoga but there is a push back. Mainly a financial concern: large-bodied people need larger exercise clothing, larger mats, and more space to do yoga. So it is not of interest to corporate yoga companies. A grass roots approach is working now and it may not be taken over by big business. It is better as there is more creativity in the grass roots. 19:35 Big business yoga can be very dogmatic, very limited, too financially based, no room for ordinary people. Looking for a “famous” teacher can also be unhealthy. Classes/students look the same, no growth occurring. Teachers limited in the type of students they can teach. Yoga will survive, but growth in yoga teaching/practice is questionable in these circumstances. Teachers we looked up to 20 years ago are experiencing injuries because of the type of yoga and student they teach. Their students will have the same problems in 20 years. Individuals must have their own practice – take classes, read, work out what is best for their body in their own practice. Can get too engrossed in the movement without paying attention to how the body feels. 23:00 Why are students attracted to Buddha Body Classes? Students are quirky, funny, talkative curious and often have a lot of fear. Fear can be generated from previous classes where teachers did not know how to teach them and they feel shamed because of their body type. Michael has started streaming classes on Sat AM – the audience is growing and more and more are interested in these classes. Allows someone to do the class in their own space where they may be more comfortable. Because of Michael’s emphasis on safety, he breaks down the pose as much as he can, give variations, explain why they are doing the pose but emphasize they must pay attention to their own body. 27:20 Play with yoga, pay attention to your own body, ask yourself how you feel and most importantly why you feel that way. Don’t worry about completing a pose. Keep asking yourself why. Body Acceptance with Beth Knudson Opportunity: online course for accessible yoga for pregnant women Online course information: http://bit.ly/HERSHA 15% on the course code: CFOYHERSHA. Limited offer.   2:08 Introduction – Beth Knudson – Body Acceptance and Understanding 3:20 “ We are not meant to be the same size all of our life.” Beth was a fitness instructor – helped people lose weight. She had eating disorders – anorexic, orthorexic. Helped women restrict their food, which leads to restrictions in your entire life. If we are restricting in any area of our life, then we are restricting our whole life. What happens when we change the mindset from diet culture – massive amount of unravelling of beliefs. Start to reframe your thoughts, reframe your beliefs, can take years. 6:55 Started eating in an intuitive way. Listen to the cues of the body, understanding what those mean, so eating when you are hungry, understanding your body’s hunger and fullness cues. All foods are equal, any food is OK at any time. Tune in to the body, honor those cues. Yoga is very helpful because it focuses on paying attention to physical cues and sensations. Meditation provides focus for internal dialogues. Gives you a practice to start listening to the body. 9:30 Thinking about your weight and what you are supposed to eat or not takes up a tremendous amount of mental time. “Your life’s purpose is not a weight loss project” – using the weight loss project as a way to not deal with other areas of your life. We have all been carrying around a 20 lb rock and when we put it down, we can do other things. 12:20 The perception of yoga supports the “diet culture” – the young, slim, yoga body. This perception is a big obstacle but there is a group of rebels who are pushing that yoga is for everybody. Beth lives her life and her practice to model and authentic and honest yogi life. There is more than one way to be (a yogi). 14:30 Beth offers a variety of modalities: Thai Yoga: assisted stretching. Client is totally passive, Beth provides a facilitated meditation with assisted stretching, rhythmic movements, pressure in soft tissues. Client gets into his/her body in a different way. People who don’t pay attention to their body, gets them into their body. Ayurvedic Face Lift and Thai Reflexology: great ways to start for those with trauma. Both are very restricted in the areas that are touched so there is certainty about where they will be touched by someone else. 18:50 The process that Beth uses with new clients: 1 A get to know you call and see if Beth is the appropriate person for this person’s needs – can refer to others. Complete a questionnaire Meet face-to-face or online Beth envisions the overall structure concerning the sessions but the client directs. Where the body takes us, where the beliefs takes us. Using movement, journaling, meditation, art. Online can see each other so can do asanas remotely. Beth has cultivated a network of colleagues that she can refer the client to for face-to face work. 22:50 Diet culture – we have lost the ability to understand and notice our body’s cues. Cannot feel for ourselves. Works on more love for ourselves and our body. Work on interoception and pay attention to your body. If we understand anatomy and physiology we would know that our body is amazing and miraculous. We should be in awe of our body. “We are not meant to be he same size and the same shape our entire life.” Contacts: Website: www.bethknudson.com FB group: make  peace with  your body

Greetings Rainbow Warriors. I’m coming to you from Split, Croatia today. I’ve been here island hopping and soaking up the sun and sea in between getting these episodes out and planning my upcoming retreats in Sicily and Bali. Make sure to check the show notes for details on those, and please do join us! Our guest today is Krishnatakis. Krishnatakis, originally from Greece, has been teaching Thai Yoga massage, yoga and qi gong since 1998, having lived and studied in Thailand and India. He is a senior massage teacher at the Sunshine Network, his center in Greece. He is passionate about organic farming, Chinese medicine, cooking and nutrition, and incorporates aspects of yoga, meditation and qi gong into all his courses. His base is at Sunshine House, however he often travels abroad to teach and also study. He is renown for his unique, spontaneous and passionate way of teaching as well as his generous spirit and open heart. When he is not teaching, he is with his three beautiful children or soaking in hot spring waters. I met Krishntakis at the Barcelona Yoga Conference . I took a couple of his classes there and was drawn to his open hearted friendly personality, and after learning so many wonderful and useful techniques in his classes, I decided to interview him. His approach is warm and sacred, two of my favorite things :) I found his high vibes contagious and enjoyed learning from him as he dropped some reminders of things we all need to think about more. I hope you enjoy it. Namaste   http://www.thaimassage.gr/ https://www.facebook.com/sunshinehousegreece/

Today’s guest features Tra Kirkpatrick, a certified yoga therapist, life coach, and experienced yoga teacher residing in Atlanta, GA. Tra was trained at the Kripalu Institute in Massachusetts under the guidance and direction of Yoganand Michael Carroll.  Because community and collaboration are intricate aspects of the practice, in 2014 Tra joined two of her friends and colleagues to launch the Center for Integrative Yoga Studies. The Center offers two training tracks, including a 200-hour therapeutic yoga teacher, which focuses on the therapeutic and meditative aspects of yoga and a 500-hour yoga therapy program, both of which are hosted at studios across the country. In addition to teaching in both the 200 and 500 hour programs, Tra offers regular workshops and programs, weekly classes in Decatur and Atlanta, as well as seeing private clients for both yoga therapy and Thai Yoga in Decatur, GA. Tra created a course entitled “Seeds of Change” for the 300 hour program that explores the intersection of yoga and dialogue as a map for discovery and transformation.   What We’ll Learn How the Yoga Sutras outline a path and goal for behavior change The components of a yoga practice that are essential to changing behavior Unpack and dismantle the social myths embedded in the Western psyche that yoga is inherently therapeutic Be able to discern the difference between yoga as a therapeutic modality and the yoga that is taught in a general population class How the stages of change model align with the yoga therapy framework What exactly Tantra Hatha Yoga is and how it’s teachings are relevant to behavior change   Center for Integrative Yoga Studies: www.integrativeyogastudies.com Books: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali There are many versions of this text out there. Schon im Yoga-Center am Zoo Frankfurt waren die Yoga Vidya Bodywork Partner Asana Seminare und Workshops sehr beliebt. Menschen machten in diesen Wochenendseminare tiefe spirituelle Erfahrungen.
