In this episode of Plus One, Kraz welcomes one of the most proficient guitarists of all time, Leo Nocentelli of The Meters, onto the show. Leo and Kraz discuss everything from Leo's thoughts on super-star artists sampling Meters songs, to his unconventional methods of gaining the confidence to play in front of crowds at an early age. The two also talk about Leo's signature sound that he gets out of the Gibson ES-175, and he sheds light on the incredible rhythmic connection between drummer Zigaboo Modeliste and bassist George Porter Jr. You'll also hear Leo talk about why The Meters split up in the late 70's, the messiness of the business side of music, and why Leo enjoys being an essential contributor to the band from the background, and never the spotlight. This is a must-hear conversation between two masters of the guitar, and one of the most monumental musicians that funk has ever heard.Leo Nocentelli is a founding member and the lead guitarist for The Meters, a band that is often credited alongside all-time greats like James Brown as being one of the sole originators of funk music. He's written classic songs including “Hey Pocky A-Way,” and "Cissy Strut," which he and Kraz discuss in-depth in the conversation. On top of his work with The Meters, he boasts an incredible musical resume as a session player, having recorded with legends such as Etta James, Temptations, Dr. John, and Robert Palmer. He's a recipient of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award as a member of The Meters, but his playing and the band's incredible discography speak for themselves, needing no official recognition. In this episode he details how he developed his one of a kind style that fuses funk, rock n' roll, and jazz like no guitarist has ever done before. This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. In this conversation Will and Kraz talk about Will's seasoned background as a session musician, their mutual connection to Yusef Lateef, and the 36 different albums that Will worked on during quarantine, which ranged from fusion, to blues, to funk, to Elvis impersonation. The two also discuss Will's mastery as a band director while they dive deep on Love Rocks, the annual benefit show directed by Will that brings together an astonishing lineup of musical talent. Love Rocks NYC has helped raise more than $13 million dollars to date, and has funded over 1.3 million meals to New Yorkers in need. Marco Benevento is a keyboardist, songwriter, and producer from Livingston, New Jersey. He gained initial recognition for playing in the Benevento/Russo Duo, and the group eventually combined forces to tour with Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon of Phish under the name GRAB, in 2006. Anna Konkle followed a typical pursuit into acting until she and Maya Erskine (Wine Country, Plus One) decided to created their own web series. Now, the series is on Hulu, where the duo plays middle school girls. On Pen15, the description reads, “The comedic story of middle school seen through the eyes of two 7th grade girls dealing with the awkwardness of being a teenager.” In this interview, Anna talks about working on ‘Man Seeking Woman,' influence from Lena Dunham, writing weird ideas, creating a non-traditional writer's room, breaking a season in two days, and writing emotional truths in comedy. “... I put my head down, and I kinda feel like I've never looked back up. I just played, I woke up. Played, listened, learned. It was just music, guitar ‘till I went to bed. I'd be eating dinner with the guitar on.” -- Ariel Posen This week on Plus One, Kraz is joined by guitarist and singer Ariel Posen, who just released his second solo album, Headway, in March. In this episode Ariel details his musical development from the time he started playing piano in elementary school, up until the spontaneous moment when he realized that he was a full-time touring musician. You'll also hear Ariel talk about recording his latest album at the same studio that his parents used to record at, and at the end of the episode he and Kraz nerd out about guitar, as they dive deep on Ariel's guitars, open tunings, and slide playing. Ariel Posen is a Canadian guitarist and singer from Winnipeg who gained initial recognition from fans and critics after releasing his debut solo album, How Long, in 2019. Ariel grew up surrounded and infatuated by music, as his parents toured and recorded in a folk band called Finjan. His soulful songs, unique slide style, and experimentation with alternate guitar tunings make him as distinguished as any young guitarist out there, and in this conversation you'll hear him and Kraz talk about what makes his playing stand out. Ariel's sophomore studio album, Headway, can be listened to here. This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Writer-actors always make for insightful interviews, but that’s particularly true for Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, who write, produce, edit, and star as middle school–aged versions of themselves on Hulu’s Emmy-nominated cringe comedy “Pen15.” Together they shed light on their “creative ESP” as collaborators, their distinct page-to-screen process alongside director Sam Zvibleman, and how to overcome the self-doubt inherent in a Hollywood career—especially for women onscreen. “I have permission to be free and wild and sort of unapologetic,” says Maya of playing a 13-year-old. Anna agrees: “I’m so grateful that we got the opportunity to just be characters with zero sex appeal. Pee-wee Herman has been a household name for decades, but the man behind the iconic tv series Pee-wee’s Playhouse and spin-off movies is even more fascinating. Paul Ruebens is an actor, comedian, and writer. He’s been featured in way too many films to mention as Pee-wee and also playing serious roles, including the flamboyant hairdresser/drug dealer in Ted Demme’s crime film Blow. You may have heard him doing voiceovers in a number of cartoons and not even realized it was him. In this episode, Paul and hostess Pleasant Gehman talk about his Florida teen years hanging out with Exene Cervenka, his time at Cal Arts and The Groundlings and his ubiquitous presence in the Hollywood punk scene in the 1970’s and ‘80’s. They discuss his pandemic projects- the memoir he’s writing, his new radio show and the documentary film that’s in the works. Also included: what it’s like to have David Bowie as your Plus One at an after hours party, anecdotes about The Go-Go’s, Joey Ramone, Prince and other rock stars...plus the therapeutic value of throwing pies.
