When Rex Willis' son Ryan joined some friends for a "Dumpster Diving" excursion a decade ago, Rex never knew it would lead to him composing his second musical. Take a listen to this week's Suncoast Culture Club podcast as we learn about the process of writing, producing, and performing an original musical, as well as the deep passion for this societal issue that Rex has come to champion.Join Rex Willis as composer and lyricist, Kelly Burnette as director, Logan Martin as music director, Josh Brammer as choreographer, and a cast and crew of State College of Florida alumni, students, and staff as they present a workshop of this decades in the making musical. This week we're talking about how to get amazing podcast guests to come on your show. How do you find those great guests that are going to bring your show to the next level? Your podcast guests tell people what kind of information you're going to be talking about. They let people know what kind of network you have. The three things we're going to dive into today are how to build your Dream 100 Guest List, how to perform guests research, and then how to do guest outreach. HIGHLIGHTS: Learn about the importance of having guests on your show Challenge yourself to dream big for your Dream Guest List Discover the secrets to get on people's radar Find out how to successfully reach out to your dream guests QUOTES: "Write every name down. You have to set those goals upfront. This list is so important because most of us don't challenge ourselves to really get great guests on the show." "Building that ideal guestlist actually allows you to map out those goals and set up a plan to reach those goals." "If you're only doing this research online and you're never going out of your way offline, you are slowing yourself down." On the last Wednesday of every month, Christy & Michelle answer listener questions live on the show - YAWA! This month we're answering questions about: Sending thank you notes early. Floor Plans & flow of events. Starting over with wedding plans cause things are getting too complicated. Saying no to parents about an after-party. FMIL wants a separate wedding weekend party just for her side of the family. How much to tip a wedding planner and more! Question #1: Thank you notes & Event Flow 1. We have already received wedding gifts from a few eager friends and family members. Our wedding is in late June. Should we send out our "thank you" notes now, or wait until after the wedding? It seems like a long time between now and June to not thank them for the gift. 2. We are struggling with our wedding floor plan/flow of events. We are getting married at a hotel and everything will be outside. We will have the ceremony on one lawn, and the dinner/reception on another lawn. For cocktail hour, we are considering adding a third location. Luckily, the hotel is somewhat small and guests won't be walking far to each location. Do you think three separate spaces is too much? Should we combine the cocktail hour and dinner/reception to be in the same space even though it will be kind of akward, or add a third location? Answer to #1: Thank you notes & flow of events 1. Send the thank you's now! No reason to wait, and if you have the time now, it will be nice for the givers to hear from you. It is also helpful to have a running list of who you have sent a thank you note too on your Guest List spreadsheet. 2. Incorporating a third location if possible is the best choice. People like to explore and be moved throughout a wedding day. It adds to the overall experience of the event. And it helps logistically as well. The reception area set-up timing can be more spread out, allowing your planner to spend more time focusing on each area. Logistically, make sure you have the right amount of time for people to move into each new space. And always have music! No one should enter in to a quiet area. This might require your DJ or musicians to bring a 3rd sound sytsem. Question #2: Though the wedding is not for another year, budgets are a bit more of a concern than pre- covid. They had a wedding planned a bit out of town, with shuttles, a live band, etc, but wonder if they should just cancel those plans and move the ceremony into town. Answer to #2: This is a good example of the kind of compromises and decisions you and your partner will have to make together in the wedding, and throughout your marrried life together. It's not always easy. Losing a job, and potentially taking on debt are big factors that can affect you down the road and cause undue stress. There is no price tag you can put on peace of mind. If dropping this venue will save you stress, anxiety, debts, regret, etc. for the next year, then it is worth it. Remember, the wedding is only the beginning. Celebrate in a way that you can feel good about. You can have a dance party anywhere! Question #3: Her fiance's parents want to have an after party and she does not want that. They are having a brunch wedding. The fiancé's dad wants to have a party after the brunch, and the couple does not feel totally comfortable with that. She is wondering how to communicate this, and help him see their point of view. They do want to have a bigger party, reception in another year when hopefully the pandemic is ove, it feels safer, and they can gather without masks. Answer to #3: The bottom line is that you are not comfortable with it. It is hard to do this, the intentions from mom and dad are good. However, it is important for you, and your fiancé, to put your foot down. Do not put yourself in a position where you are trying to convince them. Say something like “I am not here to give you my reasoning nor try to convince you to change your mind. I am just letting you know, we're not doing it.” Or, “We are having the wedding brunch and that is it.” *Question #4: *Competing Get-Togethers for the wedding weekend The couple asked the groom's parents if they could use their backyard to host welcome drinks the night before the wedding, thinking it would not be a big ask considering they had previously hosted a whole rehearsal for his brother's wedding. The parents came back saying they don't want to use the backyard because they wanted to host "their-side of the family only" for a separate party that same night. Ultimately, it's fine with them if the parents don't want them to use the backyard, however they are not okay with the fact that they are planning an party that exclude's the bride's family the night before the wedding. They had hoped for something that combined the two families, so people could get to know each other and have a nice evening. The groom is handling all direct communication with his parents and has reiterated that everyone should be together. The couple is on the same page of wanting to hang out with all their guests, and ask what they should do and how to handle this situation. Answer to #4: Yes, this is sticky. Honestly, his mom sounds a littttttle bit like Christy's mom. She loves to host, but is very particular about who she is hosting, and when things don't go according to her plan, she never forgets it, digs in and stiff arms her way to something that SHE wants even if it's not convenient, polite, or something everyone else agrees is a good idea. You guys are already doing what we would have suggested, so good on you! We think the only thing left to do is go in stronger, one more time, and with a backup plan if you don't get her to change the plans or relent. Your fiancé needs to sit down with his parents -You should be there too, but he can set it up - and insist that this party directly conflicts with your plans for the night before your wedding. The rehearsal brings two families together so that they can get to know each other before the big day - a day that involves 2 humans committing to become a new family together! 2! That's 2 individuals with 2 different families and everyone is there to celebrate the same thing, in theory. So you both need to be honest with his parents that this is just not going to work. The night before the wedding and the wedding day will be mixed affairs. Families will mingle. People can make their own plans around your two events, of course, but there should not be 2 events you will be present at and then another event that only his side of the family is invited to AND that directly conflicts with your rehearsal dinner/drinks plan. See if they will reconsider the day-after event, or maybe even his side of the family hanging out before they all get to the rehearsal. Frame it so they open their mind to the idea that this weekend is an opportunity to get to know new people. Not just cluster up with 'your own'. You have to be ready to make your own decision if they don't budge. In that case, you just embrace a plan. Rehearsal. Small rehearsal dinner. Welcome drinks at a bar. Wedding the next day. Their plans will not be something you deal with at all. We have a feeling the welcome drinks will end up being family that pop in (and maybe go to his parents house after...or plan to and then don't!), and all of your friends coming in from out of town. Plus your family. And that's fine! The wedding weekend doesn't have to be everyone hanging out as a big group the entire time. Know and trust that people will come to the events you invite them to because they love you and they want to hang out with you and be social. His mom might have some social anxiety or is just stubborn. You can't control what other people do - but make your plans. Send out the invitations and then plan on having a wonderful time. It's a bummer that his parents are acting like this - but don't let it become more than it needs to be. Have one last firm discussion with them and then decide you two are going to have an awesome weekend regardless. We believe in you! Question #5: How much should we tip our planner? What is a good tip for a wedding planner? It seems like the advice out there is up to $500. Wasn't sure why it was capped at $500 but was wondering if there are exceptions to giving more than $500. Are there times when you give a percentage of the wedding planning fee and it goes over $500? Answer to #5 (by Christy): Can I ask you what the wedding planner's fee is, total? And does that include 10 hours on the wedding day? Is she doing a great job for you thus far? A $400-500 tip is probably most typical, and that would be for month-of coordination, when the fee is approx. $3000. I have gotten more and less, and sometimes, no tip at all. All tips are appreciated! If I have an assistant on the day of and the couple doesn't also tip her a little bit directly, I will give her around 50-100 from the tip I get, so that's another thing to keep in mind. When I have gotten more than $500- it is either because the couple is very well off, or because my fee was higher, and they were basing tips on a 15-20% rate. Enjoy our presentation of The Guest List written by Lucy Foley and published by William Morrow. On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It's a wedding for a magazine, or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed. But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride's oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast. And then someone turns up dead. Who didn't wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?The Guest List is a New York Times Bestseller. Please be advised, The Guest List contains depictions or discussions of violence, drug use, self-harm, suicide and strong language. This title is available as an ebook and audiobook on Libby by Overdrive.Libby ebook: http://bit.ly/GuestList_ebook Libby audiobook: http://bit.ly/GuestList_audio Please visit www.calvertlibrary.info for more information. Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books I read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend’s blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of my own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

Anyone ready to talk about one of the subjects you are never supposed to talk about?!? Don't worry- it's not politics. Today, we are diving into MONEY with the one and only Rachel Cruze. I love this episode because Rachel is both fun and practical- and her interesting perspective on how your personality affects your spending is truly a game changer. We dive into so many topics in her new book Know Yourself, Know Your Money. She shares why it's important to know how your emotions impact your interactions with money, how your childhood created "money classrooms” whether you recognized it or not, and how to talk to your own kids about financial literacy. We also chat about: How to find contentment so we don't make money an idol The 7 different money personalities and the 6 money fears (and why fear is a terrible financial advisor) How to equip yourself with the self-awareness you need to meet your financial goals Favorite quotes: Rule number one: you can change your money situation. You can start making choices on the practical side to get yourself in control. A lot of these fears drive our money decisions and what motivates us with money. So pinpointing it for yourself is really important. And if you're married, for your spouse. What is their thing that they're fearful of when it comes to money? Know that. Because once you identify it you can talk about it. The first thing you have to do in order to save is have a plan. I think by naming and understanding how you grew up, you realize the habits you formed. In this episode I answer these questions: 1. What is your parenting advice when it comes to disciplining your kids? (43:01) 2. Is God really listening when I talk to him? (46:11) 3. An entrepreneur once said that to be successful, the business always has to come first and that I can't really have a life or friends outside of it. Is that really what running a business is like? (48:41) Great things we discussed: 1. Rachel Cruze 2. Know Yourself, Know Your Money 3. Goodness of God Bethel 4. Real Housewives 5. Discerning The Voice of God 6. Voice of the Heart 7. The Turn of the Key 8. The Guest List 9. Electric Fly Swatter 10. Coco 11. Promises 12. Standing Strong Hope you loved this episode! Be sure to subscribe in iTunes and slap some stars on a review! :) xo, Alli www.alliworthington.com/rachel-cruze
