Volvo might be best known for helping the three-point seat belt find its way into passenger cars, and for wagons. The wagon shape has been a staple of Volvo's products and helped carve a dedicated niche for the brand. Well, with time, all things must change, and the wagon has moved away from being the defacto people hauler, and become more of a fashion decision. Building on that, Volvo also decided it was wise to let the folks at Polestar Engineered take a V60 and turn it into a road-eating monster. The '24 Volvo V60 Polestar Engineered packs a plug-in-hybrid powertrain that sends a combined 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque to the wheels, while also advertising 41 miles of electric range and 530 miles worth of combined range. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Volvo V60 Polestar Engineered and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the V6 and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Wren takes you along for a live drive review of this hopped-up hauler. Adding to these segments, Wren chats with Autoweek's executive editor Tom Murphy about the status of wagons in the car market today, performance wagons, and this Volvo. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the '24 Volvo V60 Polestar Engineered so special.
Benjamin details his recent experience in the 2024 Volvo V60 T8 Polestar Engineered PHEV. That may sound like a bunch of gibberish, but the reality is that Ben had a lot to say about this 455 horsepower, plug-in hybrid wagon. Is it fast enough? Big enough? Efficient enough? Fancy enough? Benjamin has all the answers and more! Then Sami brings up all the news that popped up during the 2024 New York Auto Show, including the new Kicks, new G Class, new Defender and performance oriented Genesis vehicles (hot M A G M A!). Then the guys discuss some listener questions and feedback. Keep it coming! Thanks for listening!
Auto - Rund ums Auto.
What's it like to drive the 2020 Ferrari F8 Tributo at speeds of up to 160 mph on a race track? Sami has all of the details after piloting the Italian supercar at Road Atlanta. Benjamin has a confusing time with a more down-to-earth performance vehicle, the plug-in hybrid 2020 Volvo XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered, which can't decide what it wants to be (yet is comfortable charging you a huge amount of money while it tries to figure it out). Guest William Clavey of Clavey's Corner also stops by to talk about driving the just-released 2020 Kia Seltos SUV.

Show #433 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 3rd April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA REPORTS Q1 PRODUCTION AND DELIVERIES "Tesla reported a total of approximately 63,000 vehicles delivered globally in Q1 2019. Deliveries fell 31 percent from the fourth quarter of 2018, but Tesla says they rose 110 percent compared to Q1 2018." Reports InsideEVs.com today: "The automaker breaks this down for us as follows: Model 3: 50,900, Model S and Model X: 12,100. The automaker also blamed its expansion into Europe and China for slowdowns in getting cars from its Fremont, California factory to customers for its lower delivery figures. That may inflate Q2 numbers due in July. Tesla also attributed the push to get cars to customers by the end of 2018 to take advantage of the full $7,500 federal tax credit partially deflated Q1 numbers. While it expects its financial picture for the quarter to worsen over the last earnings period, Tesla says it still has, “sufficient cash on hand.” But what else did Q1 hold? They began construction of the Chinese Gigafactory and if you haven't seen the YouTube videos, the rate of progress is almost ridiculous it's so fast. They revealed AND put on sale the Model Y. They paid off almost 1bn in cash, they don't need to raise capital and whilst the car market watches itself implode, they're not only in huge growth but they're dragging an entire industry along with them. com Forum user Nix: "77K production vs. 63K deliveries shows the one-time cost to prime the EU and China pipelines was approx. 2-3 weeks worth of sales that were delayed in the pipeline. Key word “delayed”. This fact has been predicted for over a year, and it is a normal and natural part of opening up a new pipeline to overseas markets. Every manufacturing company who has ever opened an overseas pipeline has a one-time cost for priming that pipeline. This is the breaking of the eggs moment in the making of the omelette. It is a one-quarter ONLY known and necessary delay between production and delivery roughly equal to the additional time it takes to transport cars through the pipeline. The result is a primed delivery pipeline to new markets that are now open. Anyone confused into believing this is anything other than a good thing in the long term is badly mistaken." TEslarati reports: "By the end of the quarter, Tesla had 10,600 vehicles in transit to customers, which are expected to be delivered in early Q2 2019. Tesla stated that the company had delivered roughly half of the quarter’s deliveries in the last 10 days, largely due to the time it took to ship Model 3’s to Europe and China. Despite the quarter falling below expectations, the company is still targeting to deliver 360,000 – 400,000 vehicles for the full year 2019." Jalopnik adds: "On an earnings call in January, Musk warned that about 10,000 cars could be stuck in transit at the end of the quarter and since then things appear to have gone further awry. Ships were delayed due to a worker’s strike in Belgium, and China temporarily halted deliveries after incorrect labels were discovered on some cars." https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-s-x-sales-q1/ https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-q1-2019-production-deliveries-report/ FORD’s BIG ELECTRIC PLAN An advanced line-up of Ford electrified vehicles marks a new milestone for Ford and its customers, the company today announced at a special “Go Electric” experience in Amsterdam, Netherlands. We learned at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show that the A6 and A8 sedans as well as the A7 Sportback and Q5 SUV were scheduled to get electrified, but spy photographers in the snowy north caught a vehicle that wasn’t mentioned – the big Audi Q8." According to InsideEVs.com: "In this instance, the term spy photos is a bit misleading since the Q8 featured here isn’t wearing a lick of camouflage. For that matter, none of its badging is obscured either so we can clearly see this is a Q8 55 TFSI model. We can also clearly see yellow stickers identifying this Audi as a hybrid test vehicle, but so what? Audi already makes a mild hybrid Q8 – couldn’t this simply be a run-of-the-mill model from Audi’s test fleet? The fuel door on the left rear fender is a dead giveaway, because the Q8 actually has its fuel door on the right rear fender. What you’re looking at here is a charging port. Sneaky, Audi. Very sneaky." https://insideevs.com/audi-q8-plug-in-hybrid-spy-photos/ VOLVO ADDS 415HP ‘POLESTAR ENGINEERED’ V60, XC60 PHEVS TO 2020 LINEUP Volvo Car USA is adding 415 horsepower plug-in hybrid electric variants of its award-winning XC60 mid-sized SUV and all-new V60 mid-sized wagon to the 2020 line-up within the “Polestar Engineered” trim. The XC60 was named 2018 World Car of the Year and 2018 North American Utility of the Year. Available in Summer 2019, the model year 2020 XC60 and V60 Polestar Engineered cars mirror enhancements found on the 2019 S60 T8 Polestar Engineered. Powertrain software has been optimized to provide faster access to torque and focus additional power to the rear wheels. This optimization allows the Volvo T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid to produce 415 horsepower and 494 lb-ft. of torque. VOLKSWAGEN TEASES FULL-SIZE ELECTRIC SUV I.D. ROOMZZ Mark Kane at InsideEVs has the lowdown on another VW press release: "Volkswagen announced a new member of the I.D. family, the I.D. ROOMZZ concept, which will be unveiled at the upcoming 2019 Shanghai Auto Show in China. The world premiere of I.D. ROOMZZ is not accidental, as the concept heralds a full-size, all-electric SUV, based in MEB platform, scheduled for 2021 in China. We guess that the new concept is actually the expected I.D. Lounge" Buzz, Crozz and now Roomzz? https://insideevs.com/volkswagen-teased-full-size-electric-suv-i-d-roomzz/ MERCEDES C-CLASS PHEV SPIED HIDING CHARGING PORT And finally Chris Bruce at InsideEVs.com has the lowdown on spy shots of a new Mercedes. "After lots of chances to see the development of the next-gen Mercedes-Benz C-Class, a new batch of spy shots offers an early look at the German brand testing the upcoming sedan’s plug-in hybrid powertrain. Mercedes plans to have 20 PHEV models available by the end of 2020. These electrified variants of the C-, E-, and S-Class all have 13.5-kilowatt-hour battery packs allowing for up to 31 miles (50 kilometers) of zero-emissions motoring." Hello and welcome to the Thursday 14th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. Firstly this is show 150, so thank you to any long time listeners. And welcome to you if this is the first podcast you’ve listened to. Back at show 100 I changed the format slightly, mainly in the area of how it’s titled on various platforms to make it easier to read on car dashboard displays, but there will be a couple of minor changes from today. The biggest tweak being more of your input at the end of each show after the news. You’ll still hear today’s biggest news stories but I’ll be including at least one, and maybe more, piece of feedback from the socials, or Youtube comments or the email. That way if you just want the news, you can stop after that, but I hope you’ll stick around to hear from the community. And I’d be delighted if you wanted to contribute to the show as well. In the long term I also have plans for more interviews, specials and yes Youtubers, I’m working out we can do something in vision! AUDI CONNECTS YOUR EV WITH YOUR HOUSE Following yesterday’s news about Porsche releasing an app to manage charging across multiple providers, today Audi just revealed how they want to integrate into your house. Audi is teaming up with two new partners to connect its electric e-tron models with your home energy management, with systems from SMA Solar Technology and the Hager Group to enable the most cost effective way to charge your car - and we know EV's already have a much lower total cost of ownership. The head of product marketing at Audi starts us off with some first class marketing guff: "In keeping with our premium quality standards, we want an electric car that fits seamlessly into the intelligently connected home, to provide genuine added value for the customer. That is why we have teamed up with the two leading suppliers of home energy management systems, the Hager Group and SMA Solar Technology. That brings maximum charging convenience". With the connect charging system and a suitably equipped HEMS, the customer can use variable electricity tariffs to charge the Audi e-tron. This system can charge the battery when electricity is less expensive while simultaneously considering individual mobility requirements, such as departure time and charge level. The connect charging system gets the necessary rate information either from the HEMS or from information the customer enters into the myAudi portal. If the home is equipped with a photovoltaic system, the customer can optimize the charging process to prefer the electricity generated by the system for charging the Audi e-tron. The electric SUV does this by considering forecast phases of sunshine and the current flow of electricity at the home’s connection point to the public grid. VW PIKES PEAK RACER TECHNICAL DETAILS Meanwhile we're less than two weeks our from Pikes Peak and VW have told us more about their custom designed racer. "features two interlinked, integrated lithium-ion battery blocks on board, located to the right and left of the cockpit. They feed energy to two separate high-performance electric motors for the front and rear axles. Together, they provide performance of 500 kW" according to Green Car Congress. "The I.D. R Pikes Peak itself produces up to 20% of the electrical energy required for the 19.99-kilometer (12.42-mile) race via regenerative braking. This procedure also contributes part of the brake performance. " VW say: "We are breaking new ground with the I.D. R Pikes Peak: This is the first time that Volkswagen will be competing in a race with a fully-electric car. Alongside the elaborate aerodynamic concept and the special requirements for the sports car chassis, the development of the electric drivetrain was the greatest challenge." VOLVO GIVES YOU A BIT OF POLESTAR It's still a year before you can get your grubby little mits on the Polestar plug-in hybrid with 600 horsepower and a 100-mile driving range, but before then, Volvo aren't afraid of leveraging the name a bit. "It just unveiled the "Polestar Engineered" flavor of its upcoming S60 hybrid sports sedan, and will also offer the option on its V60 estate and XC60 SUV vehicles in 2019." says Engadget. You're looking at upgrades to power, torque, software upgrades and brakes. Plus aesthetic upgrades to brakes calipers and exhausts. "All Polestar Engineered Volvos are T8 models with twin electric and gasoline hybrid motors. The XC60, for one, has an electric-only range of 18 miles, good enough for tooling around town or to work. The BMW 3 series-fighting S60 will be unveiled in exactly one week". The last update I had was that unveiling will be in Charleston, South Carolina factory. GM BOOSTING CHEVROLET BOLT EV PRODUCTION LATER THIS YEAR "General Motors released its annual sustainability report on Tuesday, and the automaker reaffirmed its commitment to building even more Chevrolet Bolt EV electric cars this year." reports Sean at GMAuthority: "The automaker said that in response to global demand, production will increase at the Orion plant in the fourth quarter of 2018. North America should see a greater supply of Bolt EVs late this year, but GM will ship some of the additional cars to South Korea to fill demand as well. Additionally, GM also reconfirmed 20 new electric cars coming by 2023 for global markets. The latter portion of the commitment likely means the U.S. won’t see all 20 electric cars in the pipeline. We do know that quite a few of the planned cars will be Cadillacs, according to previous comments. However, GM said there will be “at least” 20 new battery-electric vehicles, which means we could see even more EVs on the global stage, likely for China." GEELY EMGRAND GSE IS RELEASED IN CHINA Last week Geely, those of Volvo-owning fame, launched their Geely Emgrand GSe, one of their combustion cars re-engineered for electric. It starts at ~$19,000 and goes up to $22,000. There is a 120kW motor and the range is said to be 217 miles. It's a very similar front end to the Hyundai Kona with a closed grill, in fact it's very similar to the size of it as well, being a small SUV. It also has the ability to become a power source for other EVs or electrical equipment. TOYOTA TO SELL GAC CARS Reuters say: “Toyota Motor Corp is taking an unprecedented route to meet China’s stringent green car quotas: its showrooms will sell an electric vehicle without the Japanese company’s distinctive triple-oval logo. Instead, it will feature the label of GAC Motor, Toyota’s Chinese partner, and will be built around GAC’s lower-cost technology. The move – a first for Toyota – will give GAC access to the Japanese carmaker’s stringent quality control, prestige and sales channel. For Toyota, it presents a quick way to meet Beijing’s requirements that such vehicles represent 10 percent of an auto manufacturer’s production by 2019.” BMW i3s REVIEW Finally, occasionally I like to look at what motoring website are saying about EVs. It's usually complimentary before lapsing into lazy conclusions about lack of chargers and not being able to do long journeys. The Drive has reviews the BMW i3s and were very impressed. "The electric motor still had plenty of pep left even when accelerating at 55 miles per hour. Though it definitely felt more comfortable on city streets." "The infotainment and instrument panel screens kind of look tiny and out of date nowadays." "The regenerative braking on it is really impressive. One-pedal driving is so easy. I actually often wound up taking my foot off the accelerator and finding myself stopping way more quickly than expected, thanks to the regen, then awkwardly creeping up to the stoplight at 5 mph." "The battery's good for about 120-plus miles, when fully charged. The teeny tiny tank for the teeny tiny range extender engine adds about 60, maybe a bit more if you babied it. So realistically, you could do 180, maybe 200 miles on a go. And then you'd have to stop every 50 miles to refill the gas tank." COMMUNITY Firstly hi to Jeff Borden who listen in North Vancouver, British Columbia. He tweeted “Vancouver Model 3’s getting ready, thank you @ElonMusk” with a video of a him driving past 8 long rows of new Tesla’s waiting to meeting their owners, and it looked like a lot of Model 3’s, with only a few S and X models. He followed up with a panorama photo of them all, and then Tesla’s temporary showroom with 50-55 cars in shot again Model 3’s. He had been talking to Tesla staff and he said in a followup tweet “Staff indicated 700+ in Vancouver and 1,000+ in Toronto in a 2 week period” Walter MacVane - @EcoHeliGuy - Whats really crazy, look up USA
