Send us Fan MailGas prices are rising again, yet truck buyers still keep choosing V8 engines over smaller turbocharged powertrains. In this week's Truck News Recap, I dive into why reliability may matter more to truck owners than fuel economy numbers.I discuss comments from Jim Farley about continued V8 demand, despite Ford spending years promoting EcoBoost turbocharged engines as the future of trucks. I also break down the latest developments with the Toyota Tundra engine recall and why many owners are once again asking for the return of proven V8 power. We also look at Ram truck sales growth and the impact of bringing the Hemi V8 back into the lineup after customer backlash to the Hurricane inline-six engines. Plus, I revisit Ford's original EcoBoost torture-test program from 2011 and why the debate over turbocharged engine durability still hasn't gone away 15 years later. Finally, I examine whether rising fuel prices actually reduce truck sales and why many truck owners still prioritize towing capability, long-term durability, and engine reliability over MPG ratings.Let me know in the comments:Would you choose better fuel economy or a proven V8 engine for your next truck?Get your Screen ProTech screen protector:https://screenprotech.com/timJoin our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/pickuptrucktalkSupport the show

Big SUVs promise comfort and power, but where do they land on efficiency, tech, and day-to-day usability? We took the 2025 Ford Expedition Tremor and the 2026 Lincoln Aviator Black Label on extended drives to find out. From grille details and cabin storage to third-row realities and highway manners, we dig into what these family haulers do well and where they fall short. The Expedition Tremor leans into body-on-frame muscle with a 3.5L high-output EcoBoost that churns out 440 hp and 510 lb-ft. It tows, it cruises, and it rides like a stretched limo, yet parking-lot pivots and fuel economy remind you how large it is. We break down pricing against the Chevy Suburban, GMC Yukon XL, and Toyota Sequoia, and talk honestly about the need for a hybrid solution that preserves torque without draining wallets. Then we switch lanes to the Aviator, a unibody luxury SUV with a clean, tuxedo look and a plush Black Label interior. The twin-turbo 3.0L V6 delivers V8-like thrust while adaptive suspension keeps the cabin calm. We cover real-world mpg, third-row practicality, and why some steering-wheel controls and driver-monitoring prompts still distract more than they should. Consider this a straight-shooting guide to what matters when you're choosing between truck-tough and luxury-smooth.We also step into life on 18 wheels, comparing sleeper cabs from Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, Volvo, and International—highlighting comfort, customization, and the fuel-sipping tech that keeps drivers happy and fleets profitable. To round it out, we map a few winter-ready Texas car museums that deliver serious automotive inspiration, from Chaparral race legends to Americana-filled collections.Enjoy the ride?

Ford's Vice Chair John Lawler recently dropped a bombshell that's sent ripples through the automotive world: combustion engines will no longer be brand differentiators and automakers will increasingly source them from suppliers to stay competitive against low-cost rivals, particularly from China. For generations, car manufacturers have built their identities around their signature powertrains – Ford's EcoBoost, Chrysler's HEMI, Chevy's small-block V8s – engines that enthusiasts could identify by sound alone. But according to Lawler, "consumers don't really think about powertrains the way they did 30 years ago." The shift toward hybridization has already begun stripping away the unique characteristics of combustion engines as electric motors increasingly provide power boosts and emission reductions. We dubbed this the "skateboard effect" – the standardization that began with electric vehicles is now creeping into traditional combustion engine territory. This raises profound questions about brand identity, warranties, and consumer choice. If Ford, Chevy, and Ram all use identical engines from the same supplier, how will they differentiate their trucks beyond cosmetics and features? What happens when an outsourced engine faces recalls – will we see industry-wide disruptions similar to the Takata airbag crisis? And perhaps most importantly, what does this mean for performance vehicle segments and enthusiast markets that have thrived on distinctive powertrains? This philosophical shift signals how dramatically electrification has changed the industry's trajectory, even for traditional combustion vehicles. While average consumers might not notice the difference, this potential outsourcing strategy represents perhaps the most fundamental change to how cars are designed, built, and marketed since the mass production of the automobile began. Join us as we explore what this means for the future of automotive enthusiasm and brand loyalty in an increasingly homogenized market.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Beyond the highways and byways lies a world of hidden automotive treasures most people never discover. Our journey begins in Houston, uncovering six remarkable destinations that fly under most visitors' radars. We explore the Sam Houston Boat Tour, offering free 90-minute cruises that reveal the bustling Port of Houston from a completely different perspective. Then we venture into Buffalo Bayou Park, a surprising 160-acre natural oasis nestled right in downtown Houston, complete with walking trails and family-friendly activities. For automotive enthusiasts, we uncover the Art Car Museum (affectionately called "Garage Mahal"), showcasing vehicles transformed into rolling works of art. Just outside the city, we visit the impressive Hemi Hideout, housing an extraordinary collection of restored Mopars and Americana in a 21,000-square-foot facility that's an attraction all its own. Racing fans will appreciate our discovery of the Houston Motorsports Museum, preserving Texas racing heritage with collections ranging from IndyCars to NASCAR machines. We round out our Houston exploration with the Lone Star Flight Museum, which surprisingly includes significant automotive elements like World War II Jeeps and military vehicles. The conversation shifts to "banned, crushed, and forgotten muscle" – those legendary cars that never quite made it to glory. From the ultra-rare 1969 Chevrolet Corvette ZL1 (only two ever built) to Ford's answer to the Dodge Charger Daytona – the 1971 Ford Torino King Cobra – we examine six fascinating vehicles that represent automotive history's road not taken. These cars, often too expensive, too radical, or victims of changing regulations, offer a glimpse into what might have been.We conclude with a comprehensive review of the completely redesigned 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor. This midsize pickup delivers impressive off-road capabilities with Fox shocks, increased wheel travel, and a powerful 3.0-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost engine generating 405 horsepower. Starting at $57,065 for the Raptor version, we examine how it stacks up against competitors like the Toyota Tacoma TRD and Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison. What happens when you love a car so much you keep it for half a century? Steve Larsen knows. As our special guest this week, he shares the incredible journey chronicled in his book "My Heart Has Been In It From the Start," featuring what he calls his "Yellow Trilogy" - three iconic yellow vehicles that paralleled major chapters in his life.Steve's story begins with a 1969 Lotus Elan he purchased at 21 and kept for 50 years. The conversation takes an unexpected turn when Steve reveals how life's compartments rarely intersect - his motorcycle journalism readers know nothing of his business career, while his business associates have no clue about his three open-heart surgeries. This reflection strikes a chord with all of us on the show, recognizing how our automotive passions often exist in their own separate universes from other parts of our identities. The episode shifts gears with Don's detailed review of the 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor. From its impressive 3.0-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost engine pumping out 405 horsepower to its Fox shocks providing exceptional off-road capability, Don examines what makes this midsize truck special. With a starting price of $57,065 for the Raptor trim and $32,670 for the base model, it competes directly with the Toyota Tacoma TRD, Jeep Gladiator, and Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison.Jeff lightens the mood with his Motor Minute segment, reporting on the inaugural "Wiener 500" race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where all six regional Oscar Mayer Wienermobiles competed in a two-lap spectacle, reaching speeds of up to 65 mph. Between the puns and laughter, there's a genuine appreciation for automotive culture in all its forms.Whether you're fascinated by life-long car relationships, considering a new midsize truck, or just enjoy our automotive adventures, this episode connects the vehicles we drive to the people we become. Car enthusiasts, gather round! Automotive wisdom flows freely as the In Wheel Time team dives into the ever-evolving world of automobiles, from classic treasures to modern engineering marvels. The episode opens with a worrying trend in automotive recalls, where Mercedes and Ford once again take center stage. Particularly concerning is GM's recall of numerous 2021-2024 models—including Cadillac Escalades, Chevrolet Silverados, and GMC Yukons—for complete engine failures. The hosts reminisce about how such catastrophic failures were once rare occurrences, usually resulting from driver abuse rather than manufacturing defects.Lightening the mood, the team engages in their popular Hemmings Sold Car Roundup segment, attempting to guess selling prices of classics like a butternut yellow 1966 Pontiac GTO convertible clone ($19,425), a pristine 1966 Lincoln Continental convertible ($66,100), and even a 1929 American LaFrance fire truck ($40,425). Their wildly varied guesses highlight just how unpredictable the collector car market can be, even for seasoned professionals.Jeff's Car Culture segment delivers fascinating insights into classics that have unexpectedly lost value. From the elegant 1957 Ford Thunderbird (down from $40,000 to $29,400) to the ultra-rare Ferrari 250 California long wheelbase (which dropped from $12.5 million to $9 million), these depreciating treasures represent both cautionary tales and potential opportunities for budget-conscious collectors. The show concludes with a comprehensive review of the 2025 Ford Explorer. With its responsive 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine (300 horsepower, 310 pound-feet), comfortable road manners, and impressive tech including a 13.2-inch touchscreen, the Explorer makes a strong case in the competitive standard SUV segment. The reviewer's only critique? Perhaps Ford should have focused on making it an outstanding two-row vehicle rather than including a third row better suited for "smaller personnel."Ready to dive deeper into automotive culture with people who speak your language? When Ford refreshes an icon like the Explorer, we pay attention. The 2025 Explorer Active arrives as the sixth generation of this staple American SUV, refined with subtle but meaningful updates that enhance the driving experience without sacrificing what loyal fans love about the model.Behind the wheel of this Chicago-assembled standard SUV, we immediately noticed the responsive 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine delivering 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque through a smooth 10-speed automatic transmission. The wide power band provides confident acceleration when merging or passing, while returning a respectable 21.5 MPG over our 451-mile test drive. With a towing capacity of 5,300 pounds, it balances everyday drivability with weekend adventure capabilities. The Explorer's interior shows Ford's commitment to modern technology and comfort. The cockpit features a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster paired with an all-new 13.2-inch touchscreen housing infotainment, navigation, and vehicle controls. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard, with USB-C ports available for all three rows. Our test model's six-passenger configuration included bucket seats in both first and second rows, with a compact third row best suited for children or smaller adults. At $48,520 as tested, the Explorer positions itself slightly above competitors like the Kia Telluride, Mazda CX-90, and Hyundai Palisade, betting that its blend of technology, power, and refinement justifies the premium. Whether you're considering an SUV upgrade or simply curious about what's new in the segment, the Explorer demonstrates how an established model can continue to evolve while maintaining its core appeal. Experience the difference yourself with a test drive at your local Ford dealership.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Automotive passion takes center stage as we broadcast live from the Tailpipes and Tacos Cruise-In at Lupe' Tortilla Tex-Mex in Katy, Texas. The spring air is filled with the rumble of engines, the scent of breakfast tacos, and the undeniable camaraderie that defines car culture. Our featured guest, John Thuman, brings his breathtaking 1965 Cobra Daytona Coupe replica that stops everyone in their tracks. Painted in what John calls "Medina yellow" (a deliberate jab at Ferrari enthusiasts), this tubular-frame beauty represents the perfect blend of vintage aesthetics and modern performance. When John casually mentions reaching speeds of 160 mph because he "ran out of road, not out of car," you understand this isn't just transportation – it's a passion project that demands respect. The show shifts gears with Jeff's valuable insights on car show preparation, covering everything from cleaning supplies (including the game-changing "rinseless car wash" technique) to safety essentials like fire extinguishers. Creating a turbo manifold isn't THAT hard but creating one that doesn't fall to pieces in harsh motorsport conditions is a different story. In this episode, we sit down with Full Race's Geoff Raicer — someone who understands turbocharger and manifold development better than most and is more than happy to share what he's learnt... plus a whole lot more.Use RACE50 to get $50 off HPA's 3D Modelling & CAD for Motorsport course: https://hpcdmy.co/CADbFull Race has been around for a long time and has always been known for building some of the best turbo manifolds and turbo kits available — primarily for the Honda, Mitsubishi, and Nissan markets. Geoff and Full Race were even instrumental in bringing Borg Warner's line of EFR turbochargers to the aftermarket and yet, despite that successful history, you won't find a single fabricated exhaust manifold for sale on Full Race's shop these days — so what happened? In this episode, we chart Geoff's journey towards founding Full Race just as the modified import scene began to explode, how his business evolved through some challenging years, and what it's morphed into today — a very different beast from its early days. This is a fascinating story that saw Geoff and his team pivot in an interesting direction during the 2008 financial crisis, involving themselves directly with Borg Warner and later Ford in the development and testing of the 2.3 inline-four and 3.5 V6 EcoBoost engines years before the public saw them. This relationship has continued and we now see a completely different Full Race that puts the majority of its eggs in the Ford basket, pumping out some of the best Raptor 3.5-litre Ecoboost go-fast parts seen anywhere in the world. This episode touches on a wide range of subjects that touches on a wide range of subjects — from the limitations faced by Geoff in the early days of turbocharging, to the secrets to building manifolds that don't fail, to some seriously technical discussions around turbochargers, working with OEMs, the ins and outs of Ford's EcoBoost 3.5 litre V6, plus a whole lot more. Ford knows how to build trucks, that part isn't in doubt. But do the Europeans know how to buy them? After all this is land of the panel van for commercial use (aka 'white van man'), and we simply don't have truck culture like the U.S. or Ute culture like Australia. However that could change with the launch of Ford's new plugin hybrid truck: the Ford Ranger PHEV. Revealed at the IAA Transportation show in Hanover, Germany, the Ranger PHEV represents Ford's commitment to combining utility with providing vehicles which lower emissions. As Europe's first plug-in hybrid pickup truck, it promises to deliver the capability that Ranger enthusiasts expect, while also offering the benefits of electric propulsion. At least, until the (relatively small) battery runs out. This new model is set to join Ford's existing lineup of diesel-powered Rangers, providing customers with a broader range of options to suit various needs and local emissions regulations. Here are the headlines and highlights: ➤ 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged gasoline engine ➤ 75 kW electric motor integrated into the bellhousing ➤ 11.8 kWh (usable capacity) lithium-ion battery ➤ 10-speed automatic transmission with new Modular Hybrid Transmission ➤ Total system output: 279 PS (275 horsepower) and 690 Nm (509 lb-ft) of torque ➤ Targeted electric-only range of 45 km (28 miles) WLTP ➤ Payload capacity up to 1,000 kg (2,204 lbs) ➤ Towing capacity up to 3,500 kg (7,716 lbs) ➤ e-4WD system for enhanced traction ➤ Dual-range transfer box for off-road capability ➤ Rear differential lock for improved grip ➤ Multiple drive modes: Auto EV, EV Now, EV Later, and EV Charge ➤ Pro Power Onboard system with 2.3 kW standard, optional 6.9 kW upgrade ➤ Two 15 amp outlets in the load box providing up to 3.45 kW each ➤ Latest Ford infotainment system with hybrid-specific displays ➤ Pro Trailer Backup Assist ➤ 360-degree camera ➤ FordPass app integration ➤ Ford Pro Telematics for fleet management ➤ Digital Logbook for mileage tracking ➤ Available in XLT and Wildtrak variants, plus exclusive Stormtrak launch edition

The Ford Maverick might have been the answer for a lot of compact pickup fans' woes. The small pickup's low price, small size, and useful bed have shaped up to create long wait times for prospective customers. Despite no shortage in sales, Ford expanded the lineup of its Tremor option package and the Maverick, by putting the two together. The Ford Maverick Tremor might not be as extreme as its full-size F-150 counterpart, but it does see some upgraded tires, a revised suspension, and a graphics package. Available on all-wheel-drive equipped and 2.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Maverick XLT and Lariats, this option package does limit your Maverick choices but makes up for it with a more capable rig off paved roads. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek's executive editor Tom Murphy hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Ford Maverick Tremor and puts it through its paces. Murphy takes you on a guided tour of Ford's compact pickup and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Murphy takes you on a live drive review of this Maverick Tremor to show you how it feels in the real world. Adding to those segments, Murphy chats with host Wesley Wren about the Ford Maverick, the tremor package, and how the Maverick stacks up against the competition. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the Maverick special.

Mike's feedback on the real-world fuel efficiency and his musings about its off-road prowess in mud and sand will inform your opinion on whether this SUV is more than just a pretty face. Let's not merely daydream about rocky terrains; join us on this journey to discover if the Bronco lives up to its robust and rugged heritage.Lupe Tortilla, sponsor Tailpipes & Tacos Lupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas, is host to the quarterly Saturday morning cruise-in!Sponsored by Gulf Coast Auto Shield Paint protection and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. A new pony car has arrived on the scene just as all of its competitors are departing. Sami tells us all about his time in the 2024 Ford Mustang, starting with the EcoBoost model and its auto-only setup and then the real-deal GT with its 5.0-liter V8 engine. While that's enough for most, the Mustang seems loaded gimmicky features like drift brake, remote rev, line-lock and retro-themed digital dashes. Is it even trying at this point as all of its rivals wave from the sidelines, or is this the best Mustang yet? Then Benjamin has his time in the all-show, no-go version of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Estrema Edizione. Looking like the 505-hp Quadrifoglio, but packing a more modest powertrain, Ben flips between loving and hating this Italian sport sedan, and for good reason. Be sure to hear his explanation before subscribing to the podcast, and maybe even connecting with us over email or social media. Thanks for listening!
In recent car news, the first 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 was auctioned at Barrett-Jackson for a charitable cause, raising $700,000. Actress Nicole Kidman acted as the auctioneer, and the winning bidder generously donated the car back to Barrett-Jackson for another auction. The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 is a powerful vehicle with 1,025 horsepower and 945 lb.-ft. of torque. In another incident, an electric SUV in China, part of Geely's ride-hailing service, had its battery pack fall off while driving on a busy highway, raising concerns about the safety of EVs using swappable battery technology. The 2024 Ford Mustang configurator is now live, offering customization options for the EcoBoost, GT, and Dark Horse models with various trims and powertrain choices. Koenigsegg has unveiled the production version of the Gemera, offering customers the option to choose between a V8 engine hybrid or an Inline 3 engine. Alef Automotive has received FAA certification for its flying car prototype, known as the "Model A," which can both fly and travel on public roads. The Vermont DMV has closed a loophole that allowed out-of-state individuals to register cars in Vermont, aiming to prevent fraud and reckless activity. Lastly, the Ford Fiesta, the UK's best-selling car, will end its production after nearly 50 years, with the final model being manufactured in Cologne, Germany. And we end on Round 7 of Bimmer Challenge at Streets of Willow which resulted in a little explosive drama!
The 2024 Ford Ranger is coming this fall but you can check it out inside and out now. Tom Voelk offers a preview of the next-generation mid-sized pickup that gets a Raptor version for the first time in the US. In the XL, XLT and Lariat models, choose between a 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder with 270 horsepower or the optional 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 with 315 HP. The Raptor gets a 3-liter V6 with 405 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque and a different advanced four-wheel-drive system. There's all sort of tech too.

Lincoln's flagship Navigator was launched in 1998 as a response to the increasing demand for luxurious full-size SUVs. Spanning four generations, Lincoln's top-flight SUV has gone head to head against Cadillac's wildly popular Escalade. This fourth-generation Navigator entered Lincoln's lineup in 2018 and helped bring Lincoln's flagship SUV into prominence once again. This generation Navigator uses Ford's 3.5-liter EcoBoost for power and sends 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque through a ten-speed automatic transmission. From there, power travels to the rear wheels or all four wheels if you opt for the four-wheel-drive variant. In this episode of Quick Spin, executive editor Tom Murphy puts Lincoln's Navigator through its paces. Murphy highlights the Navigator's features and interior before taking you along on a live drive review. Adding more context to the Navigator, Murphy chats with host Wesley Wren about the Navigator's competition, its sales history and its price. The pair also talk about where the Navigator would excel, and how it stacks up against Cadillac's Escalade. Closing the show, the two talk about what makes the 2022 Lincoln Navigator special.
The Ford Maverick is a compact pickup, that might be a better choice that a full-sized truck… or even a car. Affordable, fuel efficient and easy to drive, Maverick can replace the family car if you don't need a lockable trunk. Tom Voelk checks out an XLT model powered by the 2-liter EcoBoost engine and finds that size matters. Also, a quick look at Maverick's only real competitor, the Hyundai Santa Cruz. Remember- The Maverick is in short supply. Chances are dealers will charge over MSRP. We know that. You know that. The free-market economy giveth, the free-market economy taketh away.

My guest today is John deVadoss, the founder of NGD Enterprise Inc. NGD Enterprise focuses on the blockchain developer experience and tooling for the NEO blockchain. Neo bills itself as a “rapidly growing and developing” ecosystem that has the goal of becoming the foundation for the next generation of the internet — a new economy where digitized payments, identities, and assets come together. Initially known as Antshares, this project was believed to be China's first-ever public blockchain when it was launched in February 2014. The open-source platform was subsequently rebranded to Neo three years later. As well as creating a worldwide community of developers who create new infrastructure for the network and lower barriers to entry, the team behind this project operates an EcoBoost initiative that's designed to encourage people to build decentralized apps and smart contracts on its blockchain. Previously, John was a co-founder of the InterWork Alliance, which is now part of the GBBC. Earlier, He was a general manager at Microsoft for close to two decades, during which he built out the architecture for .NET v1, Visual Studio Tools, the Microsoft Application Platform, Microsoft Digital (which he scaled to billion-dollar P&L), and more. He led the early service-oriented architecture and cloud architecture incubation initiatives for Microsoft, which led to Azure. Our conversation covers a wide range of topics including Neo, Bitcoin, developing software, scaling infrastructure, multi-chain and interoperability, and much more. We begin our conversation by discussing John's background and his experience leading teams at Microsoft. John discusses how his time at Microsoft gave him insight into how to scale infrastructure and how to create tools for developer communities. Our conversation transitions to discussing developers. John explains general misconceptions and the network effects of programming languages. We discuss why we should be building developer tools in the crypto-space to attract millions of developers globally to the blockchain. Our next conversation topic centered around Bitcoin. John illustrates the importance of Bitcoin and how Bitcoin is an institution. We also discuss general misunderstandings traditional technologists have about blockchain and the major themes they fail to grasp. John excellently discusses the developer ecosystem of the blockchain space and why we attract nontraditional builders. Our next conversation topic was centered around code and auditing code. John gives great insights into how you should think about code and what to look for when auditing a project's code. We transitioned from blockchain and web3 to discuss web2. John discusses why web2 was a bad detour for humanity. John illustrates how web2 evolved from being focused on user-generated content to surveillance capitalism. Another major topic of discussion was the possible applications of web3 protocols and projects. One area we discussed was the application of the protocols to municipalities and other government organizations. We finish our conversation discussing interoperability and the future of multichain. John excellently demonstrates why we are headed to a multichain world and the difficulties we face implementing interoperability. This was an amazing conversation with so many insights from general software scaling to Bitcoin to web3. Please enjoy my conversation with John deVadoss. -- ParaSwap: If you want to make a swap at the best price across the DeFi market, check out https://untoldstories.link/paraswap.
