You are cordially invited to the episode 405 of the Unnamed Automotive Podcast, where the hosts will deliberate on two of the most high-end SUVs available on the market. Grab your monocles, have a plate of caviar, and take a seat upon one of our exclusive thrones made solely of materials mined only from the dark side of the moon. This weeks show starts off with Benjamins sharp witted review of the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G550. A high-end SUV with humble beginnings and limited generational changes, this time around it's got a whole new motor, design and high class interior, one so fancy that Benjamin had to take extra precautions when hauling stuff around. What does the G-Class mean these days? Is it something to be celebrated or shunned for being too excessive? Then the guys take some time to talk about the 2025 Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography, a seven-seat ode to royal British motoring. Outfitted with the right equipment for towing, hauling, and ferrying passengers around, Benjamin explains how the experience in this SUV was totally different than the Benz, even though the two vehicles share similar price points. Thanks for listening!

So we'll try something new, and see if you like the idea. Whenever we get a new car released which has enough information to make it basically its own podcast, and as long as I have enough time to watch all of the big Youtube reviews and read all the car mags, I'll write something bespoke and drop that into the feed, and you can choose whether you're interested in listening to it. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class might not be the best-selling ‘Benz, but it might be the first machine you think of when you think about the brand. The hardcore off-roader has fallen into favor with high-end consumers and is almost a staple of a luxury car collection. The latest generation of G-Wagon brings significant quality-of-life upgrades like an independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering to the table. While the G-Wagon has changed over the years, its boxy, utilitarian styling and vault-like cabin have remained the same. The '22 Mercedes-Benz G550 sports a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that sends 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque through a nine-speed transmission and into a four-wheel-drive system. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek executive editor Tom Murphy hops behind the wheel of the '22 G550 and puts it through its paces. Murphy takes you on a tour of the G-Wagen before taking you along on a live drive review. Adding to the show, Murphy chats with host Wesley Wren about the G550. Show #1408 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of information. It's Friday 18th March, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. VW DELAYS MEB PRODUCTION IN ZWICKAU UNTIL APRIL - Volkswagen's electric car plant in Zwickau will not resume production until the beginning of April. The reason for this is the lack of cable harnesses from Ukraine, which could not be delivered due to Russia's invasion of the neighbouring country. - Previously there had been talk of a production break at the VW plants in Zwickau and Dresden until at least 18 March. - As the MEB series production in Emden (ID. 4) and Hanover (ID.  Buzz) is not yet running (only the pre-series), Zwickau and Dresden are currently the only VW locations in Europe where the MEB vehicles are built. - In Emden, where the Passat is built in addition to the ID.4 pre-series, there should be no restrictions in the coming weeks. In Wolfsburg, Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2022/03/18/vw-delays-meb-production-in-zwickau-until-april/ MERCEDES-BENZ EQG: TIMING CONFIRMED FOR FACTORY G-WAGEN EV - Mercedes has finally confirmed the new, all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQG is slated for sale in 2024. The confirmation comes from the very top: Mercedes-Benz Chairman Ola Kallenius - MotorTrend talked to the Management Board chief this week in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where Mercedes officially opened a battery plant to supply the 2023 EQS three-row electric SUV and the smaller Mercedes-Benz EQE two-row SUV, which will be built at the neighboring vehicle assembly plant. - Kallenius confirms the final production model rides on a modified version of the current G-Class platform. - That means it does not share the current EVA2 architecture used for the EQS and EQE SUV families. Nor does the EQG wait for the automaker's new dedicated EV architectures that are still in development. Original Source : https://www.motortrend.com/news/2024-mercedes-benz-eqg-g-class-ev/ PORSCHE SAYS 80 PERCENT OF ITS CARS WILL BE ELECTRIC BY 2030 - Porsche is today updating the world on its financial results and, by extension, its plans to remain relevant - The German luxury brand said that it had seen sales leap by €4.4 billion (around $4.8 billion) and plenty of interest in its models. For the third year running, Porsche's pure-EV Taycan line managed to outsell the iconic 911 - The company has said that it wants 80 percent of its sales to be “all-electric” by 2030 - The company added that it is looking to get new, high-performance battery cells from Cellforce which are due to begin shipping in 2024. Original Source : https://www.engadget.com/porsche-plans-80-percent-ev-by-2030-113557450.html PORSCHE CONFIRMS NEXT-GEN 718 WILL BE ALL-ELECTRIC - Porsche at its annual conference on Friday confirmed that the next-generation 718 will use nothing but battery-electric powertrains. This will make the 718 the third Porsche vehicle to shift to pure electricity, following the Taycan, which has been out for a couple years now, and the next-gen Macan, which we should see soon. CEO Oliver Blume said the electric 718 would arrive in 2025. - This signals a more aggressive push into the battery-electric space, where previously Porsche had leaned heavier on plug-in hybrids as a sort of steppingstone. Original Source : https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/porsche-next-gen-718-battery-electric/ PORSCHE TO BUILD OUT ITS OWN NETWORK OF EV CHARGING STATIONS - Porsche said it will start building out its own proprietary global network of charging stations next year, a departure from its initial strategy to rely on partnerships with other companies. - The plan, which was revealed during the company's annual meeting, comes as Porsche prepares to expand its EV portfolio beyond the Taycan to at least two more models, the Macan and 718, by 2025. - The first Porsche-branded charging locations will be built in high-demand areas beginning next year in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, company executives said. - The charging stations will also have amenities akin to a lounge, where customers might sip coffee or work while their batteries recharge. - Porsche will continue to support the Ionity partnership and tout the benefits of the  Electrify America network of 670 charging stations across 46 states and Washington, D.C. But a proprietary network gives Porsche direct control over the customer experience and quality of the charging stations. Original Source : https://techcrunch.com/2022/03/18/porsche-builds-ev-charging-network/ TESLA RESTARTS PRODUCTION AT SHANGHAI PLANT AFTER TWO-DAY STOPPAGE -SOURCES - Tesla (TSLA.O) resumed production at its Shanghai factory on Friday after a two day suspension, people familiar with the matter said, as movement controls imposed on its workers as part of the city's efforts to curb the latest COVID-19 outbreak eased. - The Shanghai factory restarted its two-shift production from 7 a.m. local time (2300 GMT) to run around the clock, said the people. Enough workers have returned to their positions after being cordoned off in nearby residential compounds for 48 hours where they were required to be tested for COVID-19 Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-restarts-production-shanghai-plant-after-two-day-stoppage-sources-2022-03-18/ TESLA STILL DOMINATES US ELECTRIC CAR MARKET, AND IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE - New registration data show that Tesla is still dominating the US electric car market, and it's not even close. Something is going to have to break for EV adoption to accelerate in the country. - For the entire year of 2020, Tesla vehicles accounted for 79% of new electric vehicles registered in the US. Now new data has come out for 2021 as part of a new report based on registration data from Experian, and Tesla is a bit down, as expected. But, the company still holds a strong majority of EV market shares in the United States. - Tesla still holds 69.95% EV market share in the United States with Nissan coming in at a distant second place with 8.51%: - According to Tesla's delivery timelines for new orders, the automaker is still enjoying some large backlogs for almost every version of each model. The electric vehicle (EV) maker has taken steps to try to combat this behavior but has sparked controversy. - Weibo blogger @ID_韩潮 shared a document on Wednesday showing that Tesla requires owners who buy multiple Tesla vehicles in one or more cumulative purchases to sign a contract promising not to sell the vehicles to others within a year of purchase. - If a buyer who signed the contract broke the promise, he or she would be required to pay Tesla default damages of 20 percent of the invoice amount, according to the contract. - Local media Chengdu.cn reported on Thursday that an unmade source at Tesla confirmed the existence of the contract, saying the move was aimed at maintaining a fair and transparent car-buying experience for consumers. - Users who pay RMB 1,000 ($157) to reserve a vehicle can make more than RMB 10,000 in profit on a successful transfer, which has led some to place a large number of orders, according to the report. - That contract by Tesla places restrictions on the consumer's exercise of ownership, and it is highly unlikely that it will be found invalid Original Source : https://cnevpost.com/2022/03/18/tesla-asks-owners-who-buy-multiple-vehicles-in-china-to-promise-not-to-resell-them-within-a-year/ EV ROUTING COMES TO APPLE MAPS AND CARPLAY FOR FORD MACH-E Original Source : https://9to5mac.com/2022/03/18/mach-e-ev-routing-apple-maps-carplay/ DO ELECTRIC VEHICLES PRODUCE MORE TYRE AND BRAKE POLLUTION THAN THEIR PETROL AND DIESEL COUNTERPARTS?  Original Source : https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/electric-cars/running/do-electric-vehicles-produce-more-tyre-and-brake-pollution-than-petrol-and/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Do you think rising fuel prices at the pumps will have a direct impact on EV sales? It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   MERCEDES PLANS TO GO ALL-ELECTRIC BY THE END OF THE DECADE   - Daimler said Thursday that its Mercedes-Benz brand would “be ready to go all electric at the end of the decade, where market conditions allow.”   - from 2025 all of Mercedes-Benz' “newly launched vehicle architectures will be electric-only.”   - Daimler explained how it planned to launch three pure-electric architectures that year: MB.EA, which will relate to medium and large passenger cars; AMG.EA, which will focus on performance vehicles; and VAN.EA, for light commercial vehicles and vans. Models based on these platforms will be electric only.   - From 2025 onward, consumers will also have the option of purchasing an “all-electric alternative for every model the company makes.”   - “In total, investments into battery electric vehicles between 2022 and 2030 will amount to over 40 billion euros.”   Original Source : https://www.cnbc.com/2021/07/22/mercedes-plans-to-go-all-electric-by-the-end-of-the-decade.html   MERCEDES ACCELERATES ELECTRIC SHIFT WITH $47 BILLION PUSH   - Mercedes is betting the luxury segment will shift faster toward battery cars than the mass market because of customers' greater purchasing power.   - The company didn't give a concrete date for when it will phase out combustion engines, saying the pace of the shift toward EVs will vary widely across regions. It pledged to be ready to go all-electric by the end of the decade where conditions allow.   - It's flanking the EQS with models including the compact EQA and plans to unveil the electric version of its bestselling E-Class sedan at the Munich auto show in September.   - Mercedes said it expects plug-in hybrid and fully electric cars to account for more than half of global car sales by 2025, five years sooner than the company forecast months ago. By 2039, it aims to turn its new-car fleet carbon-neutral.   Original Source : https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-07-22/mercedes-vows-to-be-ready-for-car-markets-going-electric-only   MERCEDES-BENZ TO BUILD EIGHT BATTERY FACTORIES   - “We have a very clear plan to rapidly scale BEVs; we want to get on this journey to a BEV (battery electric) only world,” Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG CEO Ola Källenius said during a media call after the announcement. “We want to be the people that make that happen, not just let it happen for us and go with the flow, but really taking initiative. And we believe also that the luxury segment, where we belong, has all the hallmarks of being a leading segment for this transition.”   - Thursday it acquired U.K.-based electric motor company YASA, and has determined it will need battery capacity of more than 200 gigawatt hours. To hit meet those needs, Mercedes plans to set up eight battery factories with existing partners and one new partner to produce cells.   - The new plants, which includes one in the United States, four in Europe and three in China, is on top of the company's already planned network of nine factories that will be dedicated to building battery systems.   - The company said it will team up with new European partners to develop and efficiently produce future cells and modules.   - Mercedes said it has partnered with Sila Nano, the Silicon Valley battery materials startup that raised $590 million earlier this year, to help it improve its next generation of batteries. Specifically, Sila Nano is helping Mercedes increase energy density by using silicon-carbon composite in the anode, which should boost range and allow for shorter charging times. Mercedes is also looking into solid-state battery technology.   Original Source : https://techcrunch.com/2021/07/22/mercedes-benz-to-build-eight-battery-factories-in-push-to-become-electric-only-automaker-by-2030   ELECTRIC MERCEDES-BENZ G-CLASS LAUNCHES IN 2024   - Mercedes-Benz will launch a battery-electric version of the iconic G-Class in 2024, the automaker said on Thursday. Confirmation of the electric G-Class, which could go by the name EQG, was made during a presentation outlining Mercedes' plans to transition to a full-electric brand by 2030.   - The big and blocky G-Class will require a substantial kilowatt-hour rating and Mercedes may want to wait until battery technology improves. It isn't clear whether Mercedes will electrify the G-Class platform, or install the G-Class body on one of its electric platforms.   - if you want an electric G-Class today, there's a company in Austria by the name of Kreisel that offers an electric conversion,   Original Source : https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1125923_electric-mercedes-benz-g-class-launches-in-2024   CHINA FRICTIONS STEER ELECTRIC AUTOMAKERS AWAY FROM RARE EARTH MAGNETS   - As tensions mount between China and the United States, automakers in the West are trying to reduce their reliance on a key driver of the electric vehicle revolution - permanent magnets, sometimes smaller than a pack of cards, that power electric engines. Most are made of rare earth metals from China.   - Now manufacturers amounting to nearly half global sales say they are limiting their use, a Reuters analysis found.   - Because some can generate a constant magnetic force, the magnets they make are known as permanent magnets.   - BMW says it has redesigned its EV technology to make up for a lack of rare earths; Renault SA (RENA.PA) has slotted its rare-earth-free Zoe model into a growing niche of small urban cars that do not need extended driving ranges.   - Over the past two decades, Western countries largely withdrew from producing rare earth metals, which involves complex processing and often noxious byproducts. Today, China's dominance runs through the entire production chain.   Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/china-frictions-steer-electric-automakers-away-rare-earth-magnets-2021-07-19/   NEW YORK CITY DOT TO INSTALL 120 CURBSIDE LEVEL 2 CHARGERS   - New York City plans to install its first curbside charging stations by this October. According to The Wall Street Journal, the city's Department of Transportation will install 100 Level 2 charging ports for public use and 20 for the city's vehicle fleet. Public charging will reportedly cost $2.50 per hour during the day and $1 per hour overnight.   - The first of the city's new charging stations has been installed in the Norwood section of the Bronx. The DOT has picked network operator FLO to manage the network under contract with local utility Consolidated Edison.   Original Source : https://chargedevs.com/newswire/new-york-city-dot-to-install-120-curbside-level-2-chargers/   SHELL RECHARGE IS COMING TO WAITROSE   - Shell Recharge has announced plans to build hundreds of electric vehicle charging points at Waitrose stores over the next few years. The supermarket chain specifically plans to host up to 800 charging stations at up to 100 Waitrose stores across the UK by 2025.   - the deal will see Shell Recharge equipping roughly a third of Waitrose locations with EV charging. The transition to BEV in cars account for 54% of orders in June compared to 32% in the same month last year. Over the Past 12 months, 41% of orders were for BEVs.   - Demand for electric vans also increased in June to account for 69% of van orders compared to 1% in June 2020. Over the last 12 months, demand for fully electric vans has built to account for almost 1 in 3 van orders.   - Zenith says that salary sacrifice is helping company car drivers to transition to BEVs. In one scheme, 85% of orders have been for BEVs, with the remaining 15% for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. It will lead to an average saving of 372 tonnes of carbon for each year the vehicles are on the road.   Original Source : https://leasingbrokernews.co.uk/ev-orders-surpass-ice-vehicles-at-zenith   TESLA MODEL 3 IS #1 ELECTRIC CAR IN GERMANY IN JUNE, VW E-UP REMAINS 2021 LEADER   - The German plugin vehicle market scored over 64,000 registrations last month, with both plugin powertrains rising fast   - last month's plugin share ended at 24% (12% BEV), with BEVs outselling PHEVs for the first time this year   - The yearly plugin vehicle market share climbed to 23% (11% BEV). There were 312,287 plugin vehicle registrations in the first half of the year. So, this market is firmly in The Disruption Zone and well ahead of last year's score of 14% plugin vehicle market share. Will we see the final 2021 market share hit 25% 30%?   - Looking at last month's best sellers, the Tesla Model 3 was the winner, hitting 4,462 deliveries, a new record for the sports sedan in Germany. The Tesla top seller ended ahead of the two Volkswagen frontrunners, the #2 e-Up and the #3 ID.3, which, by the way, had its best score of 2021 last month (2,448 registrations). Expect the compact Volkswagen to have a stronger second half of 2021.   - we should mention that several new models are in ramp-up mode, like the Korean Hyundai Ioniq 5, an XL retro-hatchback with a unique personality. It scored 514 registrations in only its 2nd month on the market. The Opel Mokka EV, possibly the most attractive model in the whole Opel lineup, hit a record 655 registrations last month and could be another Stellantis model to reach the table soon. There's also the Opel Corsa EV and Fiat 500e.   Original Source : https://cleantechnica.com/2021/07/18/tesla-model-3-is-1-electric-car-in-germany-in-june-vw-e-up-remains-2021-leader/   NYPD BUYS $47K TESLA MODEL 3 FOR HIGHWAY PATROL DIVISION   - The NYPD has added a new eco-friendly ride to its fleet: a Tesla Model 3, The Post has learned.   - The luxury electric vehicle — which came with a $47,740 price tag — will be used by the department's highway patrol division, city records show.   - The department, which acquired the ride last month, said the long-range version of the car "is optimized for police highway patrol operations," according to the procurement papers.   - Other police departments have also bought Teslas and say they expect thousands of dollars in savings on gas.   - In December, when Hastings-On-Hudson unveiled its new electric patrol car, the department just north of the Big Apple told News12 it would save $8,500 in fuel within five years.   Original Source : https://www.foxnews.com/auto/nypd-buys-47k-tesla-model-3-for-highway-patrol-division   MODEL 3 POLICE CRUISER SAVE TENS OF THOUSANDS   - The purchase premium is recouped in one year. After four years, the savings are enough to pay for another Tesla. One EV saves 23.5 tons of CO2 emissions annually.   - Using a Tesla Model 3 for police duty was a new idea back in Dec. 2019 when the Westport Police acquired one for use as a fully customized police cruiser, going into service in Feb. 2020. This was the second Model 3 to be acquired by a police force (Bargersville, IN was the first), but according to the Westport Police, this was the first one to be fully tricked out for law enforcement.   - The biggest single item in the customization is the license plate reader, and it is here that there was a savings of $10,000 ($8,000 vs $18,000) due to taking advantage of the technology native to the Tesla. As far as Pilot discounts, there was no charge for added cameras, lights, siren, and the weapons rack. These discounts amounted to just over $14,000.   - There are two items that applied only to the Tesla. One is a spare tire for $800. (The Ford comes with a spare.) The other is a charging station at a cost of $1000 for hardware and installation.   - The department is getting two shifts per day on a single charge and charging the vehicle overnight. This is assumed to be the usage pattern of future Teslas, so the conservative assumption on charging is that the charging equipment expense will be required for each Tesla procured and it is included in the Next vehicle. There could potentially be a savings opportunity in the future with a dual-port charger.   - The costs were calculated based on driving 23,060 miles in a year.   Original Source : https://evclubct.com/tesla-police-vehicle-saves-westport-tens-of-thousands-of-dollars/   ELECTRIC MERCEDES G-CLASS COULD COME TO IAA MUNICH AS EQG CONCEPT   - A new report from German magazine mbpassionblog claims we will get a first taste of the silent G-Class in early September at the IAA in Munich. It is believed an EQG concept will be unveiled at the show to preview the production model arriving either next year or in 2023. Confirmed technical specifications are not available at this point, but it's safe to assume it will have dual electric motors to enable a four-wheel-drive system everyone expects from a G.   - EQG won't be a dedicated electric vehicle as it's the case with the flagship EQS and the upcoming EQE, with both getting SUV versions in 2022. Instead, the EQG is believed to take the shape of an electric adaptation of the combustion-engined G-Class. It's said to have all the off-road tricks of the conventionally powered model along with a large 108-kWh battery with enough juice for about 311 miles (500 kilometers) of range   Original Source : https://www.motor1.com/news/521003/mercedes-eqg-iaa-munich-2021/   LIGHTYEAR ONE WILL BE MANUFACTURED BY VALMET AUTOMOTIVE   - Valmet Automotive, a manufacturing contractor who also delivered the Fisker Karma, the original Porsche Boxter and Cayman, and multiple Saab and Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Valmet Automotive will now be in charge of producing the Lightyear One, as the two companies announced.   - the Lightyear One, it is the electric car with substantial solar panels over its body that managed to run 710 km with a fully charged 60 kWh battery pack. That will make it one of the most efficient electric vehicles around when deliveries start. Valmet Automotive should start producing it in summer 2022. The first prototypes should be built in January 2022.   - 11.8 km/kWh – or 7.3 mi/kWh,   Original Source : https://www.autoevolution.com/news/lightyear-one-will-be-manufactured-by-valmet-automotive-from-summer-2022-on-165535.html   REBOOTED SMART TO PREVIEW ELECTRIC CROSSOVER AT 2021 MUNICH AUTO SHOW   - A rejuvenated Smart will use the inaugural international mobility show taking place in Munich, Germany, in September to present a concept car previewing an upcoming electric crossover.   - over the weekend Mercedes-Benz's design chief, Gorden Wagener, who is leading the design of a future battery-electric Smart lineup, posted new teaser photos to social media.   - Expect the production version of the concept to be a subcompact model similar in size to the Mini Countryman. Smart will also continue to offer a new generation of its traditional minicars.   - The new Munich mobility show, which has replaced Germany's traditional auto show in Frankfurt, starts Sept. 6.   Original Source : https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1132301_rebooted-smart-to-preview-electric-crossover-2021-munich-auto-show   VW TO MAKE EV BATTERIES WITH CHINA'S GUOXUAN IN GERMANY   - In May 2020, VW announced the acquisition of a 26% stake in Guoxuan, China's third-largest EV battery maker after Contemporary Amperex Technology and BYD.   - The German auto group will build its second EV battery plant in Salzgitter in a joint effort with Guoxuan High-tech to produce low-cost batteries for economy EVs, the company said in a statement on last Tuesday.   Original Source : https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Automobiles/VW-to-make-EV-batteries-with-China-s-Guoxuan-in-Germany   TESLA'S GROHMANN FACILITY EXPANSION IN GERMANY IS NEARING COMPLETION   Original Source : https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-grohmann-expansion-germany-completion-update/   ELECTRIFY AMERICA COMPLIMENTARY CHARGING TO VOLVO Original Source : https://electriccarsreport.com/2021/07/electrify-america-to-provide-complimentary-nationwide-fast-charging-to-volvo-xc40-recharge-and-c40-recharge-owners/   TESLA MODEL 3 LR 82 KWH: NEW RECORD IN BJØRN'S 1,000 KM CHALLENGE   Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/521066/tesla-model3-lr-record-1000km/   BENELUX COUNTRIES TO ENSURE CHARGING ACROSS BORDERS   Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/07/18/benelux-countries-to-ensure-charging-across-borders/   SINGAPORE LOOKS TO POWER UP ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING NETWORK   Original Source : https://www.zdnet.com/article/singapore-looks-to-power-up-electric-vehicle-charging-network/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   With chargers still being rolled out, should they automatically stop charging (and should the car release the cable) at 80%?   Email me your thoughts and I'll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I'll catch you tomorrow and remember…there's no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.   PREMIUM PARTNERS PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE BRAD CROSBY PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI AUDI CINCINNATI EAST VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/

The latest generation Mercedes-Benz G-Class ditches some beloved off-road clout with the removal of its solid front axle. However, the more road-friendly independent front suspension makes the G-Wagen friendlier on highways and city streets. This 2020 G550 sports a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 power making 416 hp, which is more than enough to get you down Rodeo Drive. Managing that power is a nine-speed automatic transmission that then feeds the power to the all-wheel-drive system before hitting the pavement. Of course, as you'd expect with a G-Class, the 2020 G550's specs are overshadowed by the opulent interior and host of high-tech features. On this episode of Quick Spin, Patrick Carone puts the new G-Class to the test on a road trip to Upstate New York. Carone takes you along on the journey with some recorded segments that bring you along in the car during his test. He also walks you around the car and highlights some features that make the G-Wagen interesting. Between those segments, Carone elaborates on those segments with host Wesley Wren. The two also work to get to what makes the G-Class stand out in a sea of other special cars.

He has been teasing the new core change to Autopilot, which should be able to interpret its environment in 4D instead of 2D after the update, and should result in a rapid improvement in performance and new features being released quicker." reports Electrek: "Now the CEO took to Twitter to announce that the limited “private beta” release would happen next week and instead of referring to it as the launch of the Autopilot rewrite, he started referring to it as “limited FSD beta”: “Limited FSD beta releasing on Tuesday next week, as promised. This will, at first, be limited to a small number of people who are expert & careful drivers.”. The CEO didn’t elaborate further on the upcoming software update, which is not expected to be released to the broader fleet until December."   https://electrek.co/2020/10/12/tesla-release-full-self-driving-beta-customers-next-week/   TESLA ARRIVES IN INDIA "Elon Musk recently confirmed that his electric vehicle manufacturing company will enter the Indian market soon, possibly by next year. While there is little information about Tesla’s business plans for India, Tesla fans cannot seem to wait to see a Model 3 or Model Y on the streets." says Hindustan Times: "Tesla's entry could come at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is increasingly becoming focussed on promoting the use and manufacture of electric vehicles. However, Musk did not explain what Tesla’s business plan would be in India, given that the EV culture and infrastructure to support is still at a very nascent stage in the country when compared to US, European or even some of the Asian markets. Tesla's entry into India, if it does take place, does not automatically mean opening of showrooms and selling of cars."   https://auto.hindustantimes.com/   ARRIVAL ‘MICROFACTORY’ IN SOUTH CAROLINA "Arrival, a U.K.-based electric vehicle startup backed by Hyundai and Kia that’s preparing to make electric delivery trucks for UPS, is building a small-scale “microfactory” in South Carolina that will be able to make as many as 1,000 battery-powered buses per year.  its flat, skateboard chassis is put together from extruded aluminum components, body panels are joined with aerospace-style adhesives and coloring is done by dying the composite material or wrapping a vehicle." according to Forbes: "The microfactory is the company’s first in the U.S. and “is the beginning of a paradigm shift in the EV space,” said Mike Abelson, Arrival’s North American CEO, a former General Motors GM +0.2% executive overseeing the automaker’s electric vehicle strategy. The company is investing just $46 million to set up its first U.S. production facility in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and will employ 240 workers when it opens late next year.  The company’s microfactory concept is also intended to make the manufacturing process as inexpensive as possible. Rather than requiring hundreds of acres of land and a purpose-built structure, the company says it can set up and equip a microfactory in a conventional warehouse space in about six months."   https://www.forbes.com/sites/alanohnsman/2020/10/12/electric-truck-startup-arrival-putting-46-million-microfactory-in-south-carolina/#da41a7c443f1   GMC’S HUMMER EV TO USE EPIC’S UNREAL ENGINE   "Fortnite creator Epic Games is partnering with carmakers, starting with General Motors, to use its Unreal Engine game development platform to build in-car software in what Epic is calling its “human-machine interface” (HMI) initiative. The first car to use Unreal Engine, which is the primary software toolset with which developers make Fortnite and countless other big-budget video games, will be GMC’s upcoming Hummer EV, set to be unveiled on October 20th." writes The Verge: "The logic is simple: modern cars are primarily designed using software, and assembled cars carry scores of onboard computers and rely on touchscreens and digital interfaces to power infotainment centers and other sources of information displayed to drivers. And Unreal Engine is a great platform for building software, which Epic thinks makes it a great platform for building the software that goes into cars."   Epic says: "When you sit in the driver’s seat of a modern car today, the way you interact with the vehicle is different from a few years ago. Buttons and screens dominate the dashboard, steering wheel, and instrument pane, providing features that may be new to you. Electrification is at the root of many of these advances, with digital hardware such as cameras, sensors, and displays, combined with cutting-edge technology like Unreal Engine, forming a framework on which to build new experiences. At Epic Games, we’ve long been interested in the way the requirements for HMI development overlap with those of game development. Much of the functionality required to create HMI systems has been available in Unreal Engine for some time. Unreal Engine provides best-in-class visuals for production HMI, with car paint materials and reflections that bring the highest quality real-time graphics to the vehicle. A comprehensive set of visual effects features that have been hardened by game development give automotive designers a robust set of tools to express creativity in their HMI designs.”   https://www.theverge.com/2020/10/7/21506572/epic-games-unreal-engine-general-motors-gmc-hummer-ev-human-machine-interface   MERCEDES-BENZ EQC 4X4² CONCEPT "Mercedes-Benz has revealed the latest in its growing line of hardcore four-wheel-drive prototypes, the EQC 4x4² - a one-off conceived to explore the ultimate off-road capability of the German car maker’s first dedicated electric model." says Autocar: " it receives heavily reworked suspension with multi-link portal axles that serve to site the wheels much lower than the axle hubs for vastly increased ground clearance.  ground clearance has increased by 153mm over the standard EQC, at 293mm, which gives Mercedes-Benz’s latest four-wheel-drive prototype 58mm more clearance than the standard G-Class."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/first-drive-mercedes-benz-eqc-4x4%C2%B2-concept   DACIA SPRING EV TEASED AGAIN AHEAD OF OCTOBER 15 DEBUT " the Dacia premiere, which we all know is the production version of the Spring concept EV. Show #721   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 9th March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   50,000 MERCEDES-BENZ EQC TO BE PRODUCED THIS YEAR "It's not easy to introduce electric cars at a high scale - large OEMs are learning the hard way. Earlier this year we heard that Mercedes-Benz's troubles with lithium-ion battery supplies threatened the planned production rate of the all-electric EQC model. The company admits that production of the EQC is a "learning curve"." says InsideEVs: "Mercedes-Benz R&D board member Markus Schafer recently said that the company is back on track with EQC production at a rate that should allow it to achieve 50,000 EQC units in 2020. The main problem seems to be battery constraints from LG Chem's plant in Poland - hopefully now solved for good."   He said: "It’s definitely a new game, dealing with new platforms, dealing with an EV. The issue was not driven by the factory or production process but rather from the battery factory and battery equipment. The ramping up of the battery plant with €700m investment in LG Chem was definitely a challenge and limiting factor. So far, we have overcome the issues and are planning significant numbers for the EQC - returning to the initial number of 50,000 we expected for this year.”   Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 specs: range of 417 km (259 miles) (WLTP) 80 kWh battery pack (384 cells) 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.1 seconds dual motor all-wheel drive   https://insideevs.com/news/402925/50000-mercedes-eqc-production-2020/   MERCEDES G-CLASS ELECTRIC VERSION DUE ‘IN A FEW YEARS’ "In terms of pop culture, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has got to be one of the most iconic SUVs, usually shown as the go-to car for bad guys, mobsters, or rich, powerful individuals with a lot of money to burn." says Motor1: Mercedes-Benz has announced that initial sketches and concept work have begun on the EV version of the G-Class. In lieu of the canceled Geneva Motor Show, CarAdvice spoke to Mercedes-Benz Cars CEO and Daimler AG Chairman, Ola Källenius".   He said: "Yes, the G is going to go electric, we have kicked off the concept work for this, so in a few years you’ll be able to go electric with the G as well."   https://www.motor1.com/news/402878/mercedes-g-class-ev-version/   2020 PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO S INSTRUMENTED RANGE TEST "when the EPA released battery range numbers for the 2020 Taycan—201 miles for the Turbo and 192 for the Turbo S—it was Porsche's engineering equivalent of the Titanic hitting the iceberg." says Motor Trend: Naturally, the Tesla community gloated. The Taycan appears to be Europe's EV strike three after Jaguar and Audi swung and missed with the I-Pace's (optimistic) 234 miles and the E-Tron's 204. Meanwhile, the Tesla Model S Long Range Plus carries a claimed 390-mile range—nearly double the miles before you start getting nervous about finding a Supercharger.  Porsche commissioned a test by independent testing firm AMCI, which came up with distances 37 percent (275 miles) and 45 percent (278 miles) greater over a mixed city/highway course. "   Motor Trend said: "Now it's our turn, with our instrumentation. To save you further suspense, here are our city, highway, and combined ranges for the 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S: Normal mode (one loop): 240/274/254 city/highway/combined miles."   https://www.motortrend.com/news/longest-range-electric-cars-2020-19-evs-can-go-distance/   MEV BEEANYWHERE IS AN AFFORDABLE ELECTRIC CUTY CAR BORN IN THE UK "Earlier this week Dacia unveiled the Spring Electric concept, which it claimed would be “Europe’s most affordable all-electric vehicle” when it reaches production in early 2021. Some Might Say that’s great news, but Manchester-based startup MeV has claimed its ‘BeeAnywhere’ EV will be significantly cheaper" reports Top Gear: "Apparently, the two-seat ‘urban vehicle’ has been designed from the outset to be affordable, with prices set to be similar to that of an eight-year-old second-hand hatchback. That’s about the only specific detail we’ve been given on the BeeAnywhere so far though, other than the fact that She’s Electric (of course) and will feature an ‘innovative chassis design’ with graphene-based composite body panels to reduce production and component costs."   https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/mev-beeanywhere-urban-ev-manchester   QEV IS THE FIFTH TEAM TO ANNOUNCE TO ENTER THE 2021 EXTREME E "The Spanish technology firm QEV Technologies will be entering the 2021 Extreme E season, becoming the fifth team to announce their participation in the all-new electric off-road series." writes The Checkered Flag: "The firm is known worldwide for its electric innovations as they design and manufacture electric drivetrains for different motorsport disciplines. They are involved in the ABB Formula E, currently with NIO 333 Formula E team which secured the driver’s title in the first season with Nelson Piquet Jr. Former Fomula 1 driver Pedro de la Rosa will become the Team Principal."   https://www.thecheckeredflag.co.uk/2020/03/qev-is-the-fifth-team-to-announce-to-enter-the-2021-extreme-e/   VW WILL BE THE 1ST MASS MARKET ELECTRIC CAR PROFIT MAKER "Volkswagen will become the first global automaker to make money selling battery-only electric vehicles (BEVs) with profits kicking in from 2022, according to a report from Swiss investment bank UBS." says Forbes: "That might raise eyebrows at General Motors, which last week at its EV day said its electric vehicles will be profitable, but didn’t say when. The prediction for VW will also be welcomed by investors, given that the company plans to spend $36 billion through 2024 on a family of electric cars right across its mass market brands. The UBS report is also bad news for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), which will only account for 1.4% globally by 2025."   https://www.forbes.com/sites/neilwinton/2020/03/09/vw-will-be-the-1st-mass-market-electric-car-profit-maker-report/#190da6005415   HONDA CLARITY ELECTRIC QUIETLY DISCONTINUED FOR 2020 "Honda has pulled the plug on the Honda Clarity Electric. The pun is totally intended." writes Roadshow by CNET: "the Japanese automaker said it discontinued the Clarity Electric at the end of 2019. Right now, according to the report, there's no plans for the model to return. Honda confirmed the EV's death with Roadshow and said in a statement, "We will be introducing new, highly appealing all-electric vehicles for the U.S. market in the years ahead." The battery-electric version of the Clarity rounded out a diverse lineup of alternative-fuel options housed in the nameplate. Honda still sells a plug-in hybrid version of the Clarity."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/honda-clarity-electric-discontinued-availability/                 ERA OF WIRELESS CHARGING FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES IS COMING "The more electric cars roam around the city, the more will be the demand for wireless charging. The global wireless electric vehicle charging market is expected to reach $1.48 billion by 2025" reports Renewable Energy magazine: "Currently, very limited number of countries are working on wireless charging for electric vehicles. Recently, the director of the Joint Transportation Research Program at Purdue University announced a collaboration with Germany-based Magment Concrete Wireless Power. The partnership aims to fulfill the future needs of electric vehicles including wireless charging."   https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/era-of-wireless-charging-for-electric-vehicles-20200309   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Why do you think Tesla are quietly delivering the Model Y without the usual fanfare?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 241 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #634   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 7th November 2019. PORSCHE IS SETTING UP ELECTRIC CAR INSURANCE FOR THE TAYCAN "With the launch of the Taycan, Porsche Financial Services is now offering not only established motor vehicle insurance but also a policy specially tailored to electric cars." reports electrive: "According to the press release, the new policy supplements the existing Porsche CarPolicy with, for example, special protection for the battery and charging station as well as mobility protection. Porsche did not give any information on the policy’s costs or detailed conditions in the press release."   “A highlight of ‘E-Cover’ is the original price protection for the battery in the event of damage. Extensive cyber protection is another innovative component of the product”.   https://www.electrive.com/2019/11/07/porsche-is-setting-up-electric-car-insurance-for-the-taycan/   MAERSK TO PILOT 600 KWH CONTAINERIZED BATTERY SYSTEM ON CONTAINER SHIP "A containerized 600 kWh marine battery system will be installed in a trial on board the Maersk Cape Town in December 2019 to improve vessel performance and reliability while reducing CO2 emissions." says Green Car Congress: "Propelling marine vessels with battery power alone is still years away from being a technically- and economically-viable option, Maersk says. However marine battery systems can be used to improve the efficiency of a vessel’s onboard electrical systems such as the Maersk Cape Town’s generators. By maintaining the vessel’s auxiliary generators at a more optimal load, and avoiding running generators when not needed, overall fuel consumption can be reduced."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/11/20191107-maersk.html   PRICES AND SPECS REVEALED FOR CITROËN C5 AIRCROSS HYBRID "Citroën has launched a plug-in hybrid version of its C5 Aircross SUV, bringing CO2 emissions of 39g/km and a 31-mile electric-only range to aid fleets looking to go greener." according to Fleetworld:" Priced from £35,340 and starting deliveries in mid-2020, the C5 Aircross Hybrid combines a PureTech 180hp petrol engine, a 109hp electric motor and an ë-EAT8 automatic gearbox. with a 100% electric range of up to 31 miles / 50km, The 13.2kWh battery is covered by an eight-year / 100,000 mile warranty to guarantee up to 70% of its charge capacity, and can be charged in less than two hours thanks to the standard 7.4KW on board charger."   https://fleetworld.co.uk/prices-and-specs-revealed-for-citroen-c5-aircross-hybrid/   DTM REVEALS A 1,000 HP CONCEPT FOR AN ALL-ELECTRIC RACING SERIES DTM—also known as Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters—has introduced a 1,000 horsepower concept of the future for what will inevitably be an all-electric (or an all-hydrogen) series. That’s a pretty massive upgrade from the series’ current 600 HP combustion engines." reports Jalopnik: "A press release makes it very clear that this newer, more eco-friendly series will run alongside DTM without actually replacing it just yet. DTM’s promoter ITR is pretty keen on keeping both series around as long as possible."   MERCEDES-BENZ CHIEF CONFIRMS ALL-ELECTRIC G-CLASS WAGON IN THE WORKS "Ola Källenius, chairman of Daimler and head of Mercedes-Benz, confirmed today that the company will produce an all-electric version of the iconic G-Class wagon." says Fred at Electrek: "The introduction of a G-Class wagon — rated at 14 miles per gallon — would transform one of Mercedes’ biggest gas guzzlers into a zero-emissions vehicle. Källenius mentioned that there had been discussions to eliminate the iconic model. Apparently, instead, it will be electrified."   https://electrek.co/2019/11/07/mercedes-benz-chief-confirms-all-electric-g-class-wagon-in-the-works/   ELECTRIFICATION FOR TRUCKING FROM TEVVA "On Wednesday, electric commercial vehicle pioneer Tevva unveiled its Electrify initiative, aiming to drive the electrification of medium-duty HGVs through the deployment of up to 50 electric trucks across the United Kingdom and Europe over the next six months." according to GreenBiz: "Tevva has developed a package of EV technologies tailored for HGV vehicles, including battery packs, fleet management systems and advanced cloud-based software that uses geofencing capabilities to autonomously control a range extender and ensure vehicles can switch to zero-emissions mode to optimize efficiency and minimize air pollution in built-up areas."   https://www.greenbiz.com/article/poo-and-power-electrification-and-manure-offer-competing-paths-decarbonize-hgvs     2020 HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC RANGE BOOSTED TO 170 MILES FOR VERY EFFICIENT EV "The 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Electric gets a big range boost—up to 170 EPA-rated miles, according to results posted Tuesday by the federal agency." says Green Car Reports: "The pack goes up from 28 kwh in the 2019 model to about 38 kwh in the 2020 model.  EPA test info also confirm that the U.S.-spec Ioniq Electric will get the same motor upgrade given to versions in other markets—raising output to 134 hp (100 kw), from 118 hp (88 kw)."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125897_2020-hyundai-ioniq-electric-range-boosted-to-170-miles-for-very-efficient-ev   FORD MUSTANG-INSPIRED ELECTRIC CROSSOVER CAUGHT ALMOST CAMO FREE "The Ford Mustang-inspired electric SUV unveiling is scheduled for November 17, ahead of the LA Auto Show, but we already obtained photos of a barely disguised prototype." says InsideEVs: "It seems that the new long-range electric Ford is more like a crossover than an actual SUV. Size and shape probably will put it in the same segment as the Tesla Model Y."   https://insideevs.com/news/381083/ford-mustang-inspired-mach-e-bev/   FORMER DAIMLER CEO PRAISES TESLA, BUT SAYS GERMANS REMAIN PERMANENTLY AHEAD Former Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche recently shared his thoughts on the electric car revolution and the part played by American electric car maker Tesla. Secure Transportation and Executive Protection News for Saturday, August 24th, 2018   In Vehicle News The issue of what happens to the data your principal’s vehicle generates is becoming a serious problem. The concern over the potential monetization of your executive vehicles' data, including personally identifiable data about your principal— is a controversial and growing topic. To mitigate the problem, a newly-formed alliance, the Global Alliance for Vehicle Data Access (GAVDA) is a diverse group of global stakeholders and thought leaders united by a common goal of maintaining control by motor vehicle owners over personal and vehicle-generated data have asked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for a public hearing to help clarify who will control access to vehicle data.    This is an issue that ISDA will be monitoring.  https://gavda.org/   And from Car and Driver G-Wagon Revamp Over the years we have had a lot of experience with the G Wagon and found it to be an impressive vehicle for use in high-risk areas. In our (ISDA) opinion one of the best and most reliable SUV’s for Secure Transportation has not changed much since 1979. Well, that’s no longer correct. In 2018 you could walk into a Mercedes dealer and buy a brand-new G-Class that had the same dimensions, suspension design and as the first G-Wagon that debuted 39 years ago.  Walking into the Mercedes Dealer in 2019, and you can buy a completely revamped G-Wagon.   https://www.caranddriver.com/news/2019-mercedes-benz-g-class-revealed-full-info-on-the-all-new-g-news   ======================   In Driver News Using the vehicle  Studies have shown that while cornering (or making an emergency maneuver), the average driver can use only 40 % to 55 % of the car's capability. This does not mean they lose control, it means they can no longer put the vehicle where they want to put the vehicle. After 40 plus years of conducting driver training programs, Tony Scotti would say that number is accurate and may be optimistic.  What can you expect to experience as you drive through a corner at increasing speeds and increasing use of the vehicle's capability.  The question, what percentage of using the vehicle is? Good Passable Minimum  The research is done by engineers. They will never use the expression “bad driver.” They express usage of the vehicles as: If a driver can use 80 percent of the vehicle, he is a good driver. If a driver can use 60 percent of the vehicle, he is an average driver. If a driver can use 30 percent of the vehicle, he is an inexperienced driver (who should consider walking).   If you are using 60% of the vehicle's capability: It will require constant attention, you can probably carry on a conversation, but you have to be paying attention to the road, and keeping your eyes focused on what’s in front of you.  The handling characteristics of the vehicle become evident.   If you are using 70% of the vehicle's capability: Your attention needs to be very high.  If you are an above average driver the fun factor has gone up. The fun factor may be increasing for you, but the fun factor is definitely decreasing for your passengers,   80% of the vehicle capability:  80% and above requires complete attention to the driving task. This is difficult and requires skill that comes from training, if you can accomplish this you are above average. You need to be ready for bad things to happen. Those handling characteristics that became evident at 60% will be slapping you in the face – you will have to use every bit of your skill to maintain control, and the fun factor is decreasing at a rapid rate.   90% of the vehicle capability:  This will be too fast for anyone but a trained driver with a lot of experience. Small movements of the controls will create a loss of control. By this time fun is not the operative word. Even if the passengers are belted in the force will be so high that they will have a hard time moving their hands and arms. Small amounts of debris or imperfections in the road surface become real hazards. The question the passengers had about your sanity has been answered.  100 % of the vehicle capability:    This would be driving at a speed that allows for no error and no unknown irregularity in the course or conditions. The vehicle will more than likely be sliding sideways.  If sanity is intact, apprehension is present.       ====================== Links to all news stories mentioned in this podcast are available at the archive website securitydrivernews.libsyn.com.
