2024 Genesis G70: More Base Power

Genesis rolled out its G70 sedan onto the road all the way back in 2017, for the 2018 model year. While the G90 helped kick the Genesis brand off, the G70's launch was a big part of the brand's expansion down market. This smaller sedan fights with the likes of luxury heavyweights like the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and more. This Genesis also shared a platform with Kia's Stinger, which went out of production after 2023. Genesis gave the G70 a substantial styling update in 2022 to bring it in line with the rest of the Genesis portfolio, but also added a more powerful 2.5-liter turbocharged I4 as the base powertrain, which replaces the outgoing 2.0-liter mill.  On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Genesis G70 and puts it through its paces. Wren guides you around the G70 highlights some of his favorite features, and explains what this Genesis sedan feels like in the real world. Later in the show, Wren takes you along for a live drive review. Joining these segments, Autoweek's Patrick Carone joins the show to discuss his experiences with the G70, the competitive set, and more. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the G70 special.

It's very pleasant when you get behind the wheel of a car, and it proves to be a lot better than you thought it would be. That was Host Jack Nerad's experience with the 2024 Volvo S60 Recharge eAWD Ultimate Dark. While the eurosedan has a name longer than the block Nerad lives on, he discovered it to be faster, more agile, and more inventive than he imagined. One big positive — the 455 horsepower available from its plug-in hybrid powertrain. The 143 horsepower kicked in by the rear-axle electric motor, which engages almost instantly, made the S60 Recharge feel even more powerful. Inside, the competitor to the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class offers a well-designed cabin that doesn't look like a clone of every other sports-luxury sedan. For one thing, it has cloth upholstery, which was attractive and felt cool to the touch. And the infotainment system is topnotch, too. We'll have more on the S60 in this episode if we don't run out of time just saying its full name. Co-host Chris Teague was at the wheel of our other road test vehicle this week — the very competent 2024 Acura MDX Type S. It's Acura's sportiest three-row trim, and while that might sound oxymoronic, it proved apt, as our review of the MDX will outline. In the news this week, the proposed fuel economy regulations could cost American automakers almost $10 billion in fines. This is according to a letter the companies sent to the Department of Energy. Of course, carmakers will probably pass on the costs to consumers, so all of us will end up paying more. In happier news, vehicle sales surged in the third quarter. We'll tell you which types led the charge — and which didn't — coming up. The figures might surprise you. A related story shows that EVs are affordable, at least for some people, but that affordability depends a lot on who you are and what kind of money you have. A new report says the United Auto Workers union's strike tactics are forcing the U.S.-based carmakers into a game of "Survivor.” We will talk about that and about which of the car companies is likely to cave in first. Our special guest this week is Honda product planner Kyle Campbell. He'll give us all the inside details on the 2024 Honda Passport TrailSport in an interview for you coming up. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class might best be known for the fire-breathing 6.2-liter-powered, or 4.0-liter-powered C63 models, but the entry-level C-Class has filled the needs of compact luxury sedan owners for nearly 30 years. Entering its fifth generation, the eyes are still on the upcoming C63, but the base model still sticks with the C-Class's main objective: do it all. For '22, the C 300 sports a turbocharged I4 under the hood and sends 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque through a nine-speed automatic. That power hits the rear wheels, or all four wheels when optioned with the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. This four-cylinder also features a 48-volt mild hybrid system to help squeeze out more fuel efficiency and extra low-end torque. On this episode of Quick Spin, Patrick Carone hops behind the wheel of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C 300 to put the entry-level C-Class through its paces. Carone takes you around the C 300 to highlight its features before taking you on a live drive review. Adding to the conversation, Carone chats with host Wesley Wren about the latest Mercedes-Benz C-Class, its price and the advantage of driving a sedan. Closing the show, the two talk about what makes this new C-Class special.

In an exclusive interview with Acura Brand Officer Jon Ikeda, America on the Road host Jack Nerad discovers the direction Acura intends to head with its next generation of vehicles. Leading the charge is the brand-new 2021 Acura TLX sport sedan that presents a fascinating alternative to the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Audi A4. Ikeda spells out the next few product moves that Acura will make as it improves its fortunes in the hotly competitive premium segments of the market. In the car review portion of the program, Nerad takes an in-depth look at the newest small crossover from Buick, the Encore GX. Larger and with more equipment and options than the diminutive Encore SUV, the Encore GX is likely to find favor among both young singles and empty nesters. Quiet and comfort are its hallmarks. Also in the car review segment, guest co-host Charlie Baker describes his cross-country drive in the GMC Terrain. With his family aboard, Baker traversed the country from coast to coast. The top news story looks at a report from TrueCar that car buyers are growing more comfortable with shopping for a car even in the age of COVID-19. And in other news, General Motors is seeking to reinstate a lawsuit against FCA (Chrysler) charging its fellow Big 3 automaker with racketeering. The 2021 Buick Encore GX includes helpful features like wireless AppleCarPlay and Android Auto. Read about the 2021 Acura TLX

New-vehicle export revenue declined by R21bn in H1 2020

Vehicle exports from South Africa declined by 73 419 vehicles, or 40.3%, in the first half of the year compared with 2019, says National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) trade, exports and research executive manager Dr Norman Lamprecht. This decline saw vehicle export revenue drop by R21.3-billion, from R67.2-billion in the first six months of 2019, to R45.9-billion in the same period this year. Lamprecht says the contraction can be attributed directly to the Covid-19 pandemic, as most countries imposed lockdown restrictions, which resulted in a fall in new-vehicle demand. “The significance of exports for the country’s motor industry was highlighted in 2019, when, despite a progressively declining domestic new vehicle market, reaching its lowest sales level since 2010, vehicle exports once again showed exceptional growth in 2019 to support the export-oriented industry’s overall performance.” South Africa’s automotive industry exported a record number of 387 125 left- and right-hand-drive vehicles to 105 countries in 2019 – up from 351 139 vehicles in 2018 – at a record export revenue of R148-billion. “Record vehicle exports in 2019, accompanied by continued high levels of investment in the domestic automotive industry and large-scale employment of high skilled jobs, were testimony to the largest manufacturing sector’s contribution to the South African economy,” notes Lamprecht. The Regions by Numbers South Africa’s new-vehicle exports to Central America saw a 75.2% decline in the first half of this year compared with the same period last year. However, export numbers to this region are very small, at 106 vehicles in 2020. Exports to South America fell by 29.9%, to 1 563 vehicles, with exports to North America declining by 40.6%, to 3 318 vehicles. Exports to Australasia dropped by 34.9%, to 6 144 units, with exports to the rest of Africa declining by 40%, to 6 934 units. New-vehicle exports to Asia declined by 36.5%, to 12 357 vehicles. The most significant decline, however, was to Europe, at 41.3%, with 78 520 vehicles exported to this region compared with 133 672 units in the first six months of 2019. “Considering that a significant 64.1% of South African vehicle production was exported in 2019, with Europe accounting for 73.8% of the 387 125 vehicles exported, developments in the region have a direct and measurable impact on the domestic automotive industry’s performance,” says Lamprecht. “Consequently, the 55 152 vehicles, or 41.3%, decline in vehicle exports to Europe comprised the bulk of the domestic industry’s vehicle export losses during the first half of 2020.” Volkswagen Group South Africa, with its Polo model, topped the country’s vehicle export rankings in 2019, with 89 366 of these units destined for Europe. BMW exported 67 516 X3 models to Europe, followed by 55 373 Ford Ranger models, 43 253 Toyota Hilux/Corolla models and 30 003 Mercedes-Benz C-Class models. The UK, with 101 401 vehicles, followed by Germany, with 37 152 vehicles, France, with 25 629 vehicles, Italy, with 14 624 vehicles, and Austria, with 12 675 vehicles, were the South African automotive industry’s top five European destinations in 2019. However, according to data collated by the International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers, first-half 2020 new-vehicle sales in the UK declined by 48.4% compared with the first half 2019, while in Germany the new vehicle market declined by 33.9%. In France the market declined by 37.1%, in Italy by 45.1%, and in Austria by 35.3%. “Some positive news for the domestic automotive industry is that the major European markets reflected an improved performance since June this year, in line with the easing of the lockdown restrictions,” says Lamprecht. “Markets have also been buoyed by large financial government incentives to encourage drivers to trade in older cars for new ones. “However, the bad news is that new-vehicle sales ac...

Show #433   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 3rd April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TESLA REPORTS Q1 PRODUCTION AND DELIVERIES "Tesla reported a total of approximately 63,000 vehicles delivered globally in Q1 2019. Deliveries fell 31 percent from the fourth quarter of 2018, but Tesla says they rose 110 percent compared to Q1 2018." Reports InsideEVs.com today: "The automaker breaks this down for us as follows: Model 3: 50,900, Model S and Model X: 12,100. The automaker also blamed its expansion into Europe and China for slowdowns in getting cars from its Fremont, California factory to customers for its lower delivery figures. That may inflate Q2 numbers due in July. Tesla also attributed the push to get cars to customers by the end of 2018 to take advantage of the full $7,500 federal tax credit partially deflated Q1 numbers. While it expects its financial picture for the quarter to worsen over the last earnings period, Tesla says it still has, “sufficient cash on hand.”   But what else did Q1 hold? They began construction of the Chinese Gigafactory and if you haven't seen the YouTube videos, the rate of progress is almost ridiculous it's so fast. They revealed AND put on sale the Model Y. They paid off almost 1bn in cash, they don't need to raise capital and whilst the car market watches itself implode, they're not only in huge growth but they're dragging an entire industry along with them.   com Forum user Nix: "77K production vs. 63K deliveries shows the one-time cost to prime the EU and China pipelines was approx. 2-3 weeks worth of sales that were delayed in the pipeline. Key word “delayed”. This fact has been predicted for over a year, and it is a normal and natural part of opening up a new pipeline to overseas markets. Every manufacturing company who has ever opened an overseas pipeline has a one-time cost for priming that pipeline. This is the breaking of the eggs moment in the making of the omelette. It is a one-quarter ONLY known and necessary delay between production and delivery roughly equal to the additional time it takes to transport cars through the pipeline. The result is a primed delivery pipeline to new markets that are now open. Anyone confused into believing this is anything other than a good thing in the long term is badly mistaken."   TEslarati reports: "By the end of the quarter, Tesla had 10,600 vehicles in transit to customers, which are expected to be delivered in early Q2 2019. Tesla stated that the company had delivered roughly half of the quarter’s deliveries in the last 10 days, largely due to the time it took to ship Model 3’s to Europe and China. Despite the quarter falling below expectations, the company is still targeting to deliver 360,000 – 400,000 vehicles for the full year 2019."   Jalopnik adds: "On an earnings call in January, Musk warned that about 10,000 cars could be stuck in transit at the end of the quarter and since then things appear to have gone further awry. Ships were delayed due to a worker’s strike in Belgium, and China temporarily halted deliveries after incorrect labels were discovered on some cars."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-s-x-sales-q1/   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-q1-2019-production-deliveries-report/   FORD’s BIG ELECTRIC PLAN An advanced line-up of Ford electrified vehicles marks a new milestone for Ford and its customers, the company today announced at a special “Go Electric” experience in Amsterdam, Netherlands. We learned at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show that the A6 and A8 sedans as well as the A7 Sportback and Q5 SUV were scheduled to get electrified, but spy photographers in the snowy north caught a vehicle that wasn’t mentioned – the big Audi Q8." According to InsideEVs.com: "In this instance, the term spy photos is a bit misleading since the Q8 featured here isn’t wearing a lick of camouflage. For that matter, none of its badging is obscured either so we can clearly see this is a Q8 55 TFSI model. We can also clearly see yellow stickers identifying this Audi as a hybrid test vehicle, but so what? Audi already makes a mild hybrid Q8 – couldn’t this simply be a run-of-the-mill model from Audi’s test fleet? The fuel door on the left rear fender is a dead giveaway, because the Q8 actually has its fuel door on the right rear fender. What you’re looking at here is a charging port. Sneaky, Audi. Very sneaky."   https://insideevs.com/audi-q8-plug-in-hybrid-spy-photos/   VOLVO ADDS 415HP ‘POLESTAR ENGINEERED’ V60, XC60 PHEVS TO 2020 LINEUP Volvo Car USA is adding 415 horsepower plug-in hybrid electric variants of its award-winning XC60 mid-sized SUV and all-new V60 mid-sized wagon to the 2020 line-up within the “Polestar Engineered” trim. The XC60 was named 2018 World Car of the Year and 2018 North American Utility of the Year. Available in Summer 2019, the model year 2020 XC60 and V60 Polestar Engineered cars mirror enhancements found on the 2019 S60 T8 Polestar Engineered. Powertrain software has been optimized to provide faster access to torque and focus additional power to the rear wheels. This optimization allows the Volvo T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid to produce 415 horsepower and 494 lb-ft. of torque.   VOLKSWAGEN TEASES FULL-SIZE ELECTRIC SUV I.D. ROOMZZ Mark Kane at InsideEVs has the lowdown on another VW press release: "Volkswagen announced a new member of the I.D. family, the I.D. ROOMZZ concept, which will be unveiled at the upcoming 2019 Shanghai Auto Show in China. The world premiere of I.D. ROOMZZ is not accidental, as the concept heralds a full-size, all-electric SUV, based in MEB platform, scheduled for 2021 in China. We guess that the new concept is actually the expected I.D. Lounge"   Buzz, Crozz and now Roomzz?   https://insideevs.com/volkswagen-teased-full-size-electric-suv-i-d-roomzz/   MERCEDES C-CLASS PHEV SPIED HIDING CHARGING PORT And finally Chris Bruce at InsideEVs.com has the lowdown on spy shots of a new Mercedes. "After lots of chances to see the development of the next-gen Mercedes-Benz C-Class, a new batch of spy shots offers an early look at the German brand testing the upcoming sedan’s plug-in hybrid powertrain. Mercedes plans to have 20 PHEV models available by the end of 2020. These electrified variants of the C-, E-, and S-Class all have 13.5-kilowatt-hour battery packs allowing for up to 31 miles (50 kilometers) of zero-emissions motoring."     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   FORD FIESTA, FOCUS MILD-HYBRIDS ANNOUNCED FOR 2020 IN EUROPE "Earlier this year, Ford announced it will electrify its every new model in Europe from the all-new Focus onwards, including new nameplates and upgraded versions of existing vehicles. After launching its first-ever hybrid wagon with the facelifted Mondeo, Ford of Europe is now announcing it will bring mild-hybrid variants of the Fiesta and Focus to [Europe]" according to Anthony Karr for Motor1.com US today: "the Fiesta EcoBoost Hybrid and Focus EcoBoost Hybrid will use a version of the 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost equipped with a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BISG) which replaces the traditional alternator. The BISG will recover and store energy usually lost during braking and coasting in a small 48-volt lithium-ion air-cooled battery pack. The energy from the battery will be released during acceleration to provide torque assistance for a “punchier, more responsive performance, particularly at lower engine speeds.” Also, it will run the car’s electrical ancillaries."   https://www.motor1.com/news/315421/ford-focus-fiesta-mild-hybrid/   BYD REVEALS PLANS FOR ALL-NEW E SERIES OF ELECTRIC CARS Chinese automaker BYD officially launched the all-new “e” product series, which will be operated parallel with the “Dynasty” series. There are three sedan models and two SUV models under the “e” series to be rolled out in 2019. Besides, the automaker will start to accept orders of the BYD e1, the first model for the new series, on April 1." Reports InsideEVs.com: "Products under the newly-launched series are developed on the “e-platform”, a BEV platform unveiled by BYD at Auto China 2018. According to BYD’s planning, the “e” series is positioned as a provider of smart BEVs, focusing on quality, cost performance and new intelligent mobility life, and the “Dynasty” matrix, designed to be a forward-looking leader for the BEV era, more highlights technology guidance, car performance and experience."   https://insideevs.com/byd-all-new-e-series-electric-cars/   TESLA MODEL 3 OUTSELLS BMW 3 SERIES, MERCEDES C CLASS IN EUROPE "In its first full month on the market, the Tesla Model 3 shot to #1 on the European sales charts in its so-called luxury mid-size segment. That's quite an accomplishment for Tesla, the electric automaker that hails from California. Even more impressive is that the Model 3 isn't even available in the UK, as right-hand-drive versions have yet to be produced." Writes Eric Loveday for Motor1.com: "The focus here is on sales in the month of February. Those figures for Europe have just become final. So then, exactly how well did the Model 3 do in regards to sales? Well, it outsold some stiff German competition like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. That's like a punch in the face to the German automakers right there."   Felipe Munoz, global analyst for Jato Dynamics: "As we’re seeing in the US, Tesla is also shaking up the European market. Its long-lasting impact will depend on how quickly the German premium makers, Volvo and JLR react to the arrival of the Model 3 to Europe and how quickly they can bring in their own midsize electric cars.”   TESLA MODEL 3 RIGHT-HAND DRIVE SPOTTED IN CALIFORNIA "A right-hand-drive variant of the Tesla Model 3 has been spotted recently in California. In a photo shared on Reddit by user u/Mr_Salty_Peanuts, a black test version of the midsize sedan is seen driving on I-280 with dealer plates. " reports Teslarati: "The sighting of the RHD Model 3 is good news, particularly for reservation holders in the UK in close proximity to locations covered by Tesla’s current European sales ramp, which only cover left-hand drive territories. Tesla’s online configurators generally open a few months prior to deliveries, meaning if the all-electric car maker’s predictions are correct, customers in RHD locations like the UK, Australia, and Hong Kong will soon have an opportunity to design their vehicles."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-right-hand-drive-spotted-in-california/   TESLA DELAYS DELIVERIES OF MODEL 3 WITH STANDARD BATTERY PACK Fred at Electrek picks up today on the case of the Standard Range Model 3 that isn't to be, at least not yet. "Many buyers of Tesla’s new base Model 3 with Standard battery pack starting at $35,000 are reportedly being told by the automaker that their delivery is being delayed. In some cases, Tesla is trying to upsell them."When Tesla finally launched the standard Model 3 for $35,000 last month, it promised 2 to 4 weeks delivery timelines to buyers. We have yet to see evidence of Tesla delivering any Standard Model 3 to date, but the automaker has delivered many Standard Plus Model 3, which was also launched at the same time. Over the previous day, Electrek has received several reports from buyers who had a delivery date for their Standard Model 3 after they have been told by Tesla that they couldn’t deliver the vehicle."   https://electrek.co/2019/03/26/tesla-model-3-standard-battery-delay/   AUDI A4-SIZED ELECTRIC SEDAN DUE 2023 TO FIGHT TESLA MODEL 3 "Audi is kicking its electrification plans into high gear with the launch of the E-Tron due to be followed later this year by its more stylish sibling, the E-Tron Sportback. These two fully electric crossovers will be joined by the Tesla Model S-rivaling E-Tron GT in the second half of next year, with a road-going Q4 E-Tron in the pipeline for a late 2020 launch." Reports Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com US today: "the aforementioned E-Tron GT (pictured here) will be joined by a smaller sedan similar in size with the A4 to go up against the Tesla Model 3. The new zero-emissions model will ride on the same PPE platform as the E-Tron GT, which by the way will have approximately the same size as the A6 Sedan. the A4-sized EV is earmarked for a 2023 release. If that’s correct, it could mean we will see the production version as early as 2022."   https://www.motor1.com/news/315404/audi-electric-sedan-2023-launch/   COMEDIAN JAY LENO SAYS ELECTRIC CARS 'WILL BE THE FUTURE' USA Today have been talking to Jay Leno: "While Leno has a horde of well-kept antique cars in a custom-built bunker in Burbank, California, the self-proclaimed "big car lover" also has an affinity for modern vehicles with high-tech features." "I have a Tesla Model S. That's the future," Leno told USA TODAY. "I predict a child born today, most likely by the time they're 18, may not have ever ridden in an internal combustion car. I think electric will be the future." "It wasn't until recently with new battery technology that you get hundreds and hundreds of miles (on a charge)," Leno said. "I think we'll see a thousand-mile range pretty soon," Leno said about battery-powered cars.   https://eu.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2019/03/18/jay-leno-electric-cars-are-future/3175820002/   BIG OIL PUMPS $1 BILLION INTO CLIMATE CHANGE LOBBYING, EXECS LAUGH ABOUT TRUMP ACCESS "Major oil companies have spent $1 billion on climate lobbying that is “overwhelmingly in conflict” with the Paris Agreement, according to one new report. And another report reveals oil execs laughing about their newfound access within the Trump administration." Reports Electrek: "While many oil companies have made a public show of their green energy investments, InfluenceMap reports that ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch Shell, Chevron, BP and Total have used more than $1 billion in shareholder funds since the Paris Agreement on “misleading climate-related branding and lobbying.” Catherine Howarth, chief executive of London-based responsible investment charity ShareAction: "InfluenceMap’s research confirms a widely held suspicion that Big Oil’s glossy sustainability reports and shiny climate statements are all rhetoric and no action. These companies have mastered the art of corporate doublespeak – by boasting about their climate credentials while quietly using their lobbying firepower to sabotage the implementation of sensible climate policy and pouring millions into groups that engage in dirty lobbying on their behalf.”   https://electrek.co/2019/03/25/big-oil-climate-lobbying/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. It’s Thursday 7th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to.   The background to the shareholder meeting was a $785million loss in the first quarter of this year alone. Model 3 production is good, and behind expectations.   Mission: "To accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.   Thank you to everyone who I follow who attended and posted pictures, from a few thousand miles away I felt very close. Thank you Dennis Pascual who had great pics of the white Roadster on show, albeit without an interior so not a working model. A reminder to those with a spare $250,000 kicking around, you can put you deposit down now. The deposit being the full amount!   1.ELON GETS EMOTIONAL Elon started off emotional, almost walking on stage with tears in his eyes and steadying his voice. It was quite personal anything with some shareholders wanting him removed as Chairman, which was never a realistic proposal. Shareholders gave Elon and the board a full vote of confidence. It was visceral how much he cares, and how deeply invested he is on a personal level. Invested in the financial success, the quality of cars and above all, the safety of his workforce. "At Tesla, we build our cars with love. At a lot of other companies, they're built by marketing or the finance department, and there's no soul. We're not perfect, but we pour our heart and soul into it and we really care."   WORKER INJURY RATE REDUCED Safer Employees was the title of this slide. Zach from Clean Technica says: "Tesla’s factory worker injury rate is now approximately 6% below the auto industry average and 50% what it was when GM and Toyota were last building cars in the NUMMI factory. Last year, Tesla’s factory worker injury rate was a bit above the auto industry average. Tesla’s long-term goal is to get it to 50% of the industry average, or 25% of what it was when GM and Toyota were running the factory."   TESLA ARE IMPROVING QUALITY Tesla Model 3 repairs reduced rapidly from Sep 17 to January 18, and have stabilised now at a much lower level.   BATTERY PACK AND CELL COST REDUCTIONS In the Q&A section, I thought some of the most interesting comments came when Elon and JB were chatting about battery cell prices. Below $100/kWh is the holy grail for cost parity with combustion engines and some analysts put that at 2020, others I’ve seen only last week said if couldn't be done before 2023. BNEF, hugely respected and knowing a lot more than I do, say 2025. Elon said...by the end of this year at cell level. That took my breath away to be honest. He said it depends on commodity prices, and it's cell level not pack level, but $100 by the end of the year? Even if you account for ElonTime and add 6 months (make it 12!) and it would be huge news. Pack level $100/kWh within two years, and even Elon joked that wasn't ElonTime, that was realistic time. He specifically talked about improvements to the chemistry, vertical integration at Giga, and production of anodes and cathodes. If i was an analyst today or at BNEF I’d be going back the calculator sharpish and revising my estimates so not to seem out of touch. As the battery pack is always the most expensive part of an EV, which reduces Tesla's costs and increases their margins.   MODEL 3 IS TOP SELLING PREMIUM SEDAN It's hard with Tesla to focus on the stories that matter, such can be the chaos of media attention around them. Partly brought on by their own success, the half a million Model 3 reservations, and the bold claims they make about their ability to produce them. But they ARE making a lot of cars, and rates are improving. So much so that Model 3 is now the best-selling mid-sized premium sedan in the U.S. on a monthly basis, now outselling Daimler's popular Mercedes-Benz C-Class, according to Tesla. More than the Audi A4, more than the BMW 3Series, more than the Lexus IS.   GIGAFACTORY OVERDRIVE Tesla expects to produce more than half of the world’s EV batteries in Q3 2018, including Chinese production. Without any sort of fact check, that was the stat which struck me as intriguing. There are a LOT of Chinese cars, trucks and buses being produced with rates on the rise, from the likes of BYD, BAIC etc. Oh and don't try to take a quick trip around the Gigafactory, Elon says it takes 2 hours if you don't stop, to see it all. And he & JB said it was only one third built. When finished it will easily be the biggest building on planet earth. That won't be complete for another 4 or 5 years.   1GWh OF ENERGY STORAGE As I talked about on yesterday’s podcast, if you missed it you might want to download that one we discussed more in detail the JB Straubel quotes, but Tesla didn't miss the chance to reiterate the news Tesla’s energy storage production has now reached 1 GWh worldwide. And they want to deploy the next 1GWh within a year, more of that phrase 'exponential growth' from EM. And talking energy, Elon dropped in how he happened to have bought a house opposite where he lives - not sure whether that's to live in or whether that's what you do as a billionaire - but that he had the Solar Roof put on it, and he's so happy with how it looks and works. It doesn't get the headlines but you could see how much Elon wants the Solar Roof to be the default choice of roof covering in the future, and he talked about it wanting to last 50 years.   MODEL Y This was never meant to be the forum for major announcements about any of those things but inevitably we heard snippets of info. There was a new silhouette image of the Model Y, just the front, but the fanboys and fangirls loved it. He reiterated Twitter claims of a model Y reveal date of March 2019, with production commencing in H1 2020.   ROADSTER The surprise of the Roadster unveil at the Semi event took the air out of the room at the time, but it gets better. There was laughter when Elon called the car he revealed last year the "base Roadster" and said “it’s gonna have a SpaceX options package.” So that's an improvement on 0-60mph in 1.9 seconds, Top Speed of 250mph and 620 mile range. I also thought it was interesting, and this doesn't get reported because Elon often says a 'thing' which gets all the headlines, but the sentence he says next can be more powerful. He said combustion technology has a halo effect on all ICE cars because it still owns the records, but he wants the Roadster to be the best, full stop. The fastest accelerating, the quickest, the best on the track, and the longest range between adding fuel. He said once an electric car bests combustion for everything then it's game on. Or rather, game over for gas.   SEMI RE-DESIGN Elon did say the semi would get a redesign, where in Europe we have to use the cab-over-engine design to meet regulations on total length of truck. He also said the range would be beyond what anyone thinks is possible. He confirmed the finalised, single design would work in North America, Europe, China, and the rest of the world.   MODEL 3 TEST DRIVES If you're lucking enough to live in an area with a Model 3 on display, you're already doing better than most, and certainly better than here in Europe. But Elon announced he wanted a Model 3 at every Tesla store, and next some cars for test drives. That's in the next two months. What model do you think they would put out for test drives? A basic 35k model, a fully spec'd model, a dual motor (let's call it the 3D) or the full beans performance P3D model? Either way I don't think just anyone will get a test drive, either existing S and X owners, or even just Model 3 reservation holders, to dissuade them from cancelling.   COMPACT TESLA I love how an innocent question can be huge news. Will there be a compact-sized Tesla? One to take on the VW ID range, the Golf buying market? Oh yes says Elon, within 5 years. So watch out Golf, or Ford Focus, or Vauxhall Astra, or Audi A3.   ELON WANTS TO GET BETTER AT 'TIME' “I do think I have an issue with time. This is something I’m trying to get better at. I’m a naturally optimistic person. I’m trying to recalibrate these estimates as much as possible.”   AUTOPILOT He said he has been up until 1am last night testing Autopilot. Isn't that a fascinating insight? Autopilot features were said to “exponentially” improve over the next six-twelve months. He even confirmed that Tesla plans to bring back free Autopilot trials.   TESLA BODYSHOP Domenick at InsideEV's described it best when he pointed out: "Tesla service centres will double over the next year, Musk mentioned that they will be adding Tesla body shop repair locations. These would be attached, mostly, to existing service centres, with the top 10 metro areas in the US getting one by the end of the month. Saying that this would create a huge improvement in both time and cost of body repair claiming, incredibly, that they would be able to achieve same-day repair in a lot of cases."   35K MODEL 3 DELIVERED FIRST QUARTER OF 2019 We will honor that obligation” to deliver at that price, he said, “and we would do so now if it was physically possible.”   MODEL 3 AND THIRD ASSEMBLEY LINE He said the third general assembly line in its Fremont, California, plant will come online soon, ensuring production will hit 5,000 cars per week by the end of June. "All Model 3 production lines have demonstrated capability of producing 500 cars per day". If you remember 5,000/week was the target for end of 2017 but it's now looking like it might actually happen by the end of Q2, the end of June is 23 days time. Line 3 was confirmed to be more efficient than Lines 1 and 2.   SUPERCHARGER EXPANSION 9,969 Superchargers Globally Today, a whisker away from 10,000. The Supercharger V3 will be ready by the end of the year, and when ready, the expansion rate will be increased to get more of the V3's out there. Elon said the plan is to put them at all the right places so you can drive around the world only on Superchargers. Long term they're working on charging ratios, which was a new term to me, with a charging time ratio on long trips of 6:1, later 8 or 10:1 (currently around 4.5:1). On the earnings call, but not in my notes from yesterday, was the charge rate of 200-250kW.   CASH FLOW POSITIVE I was watching the live stream, which was super late here, on Ben Sullins YouTube channel, he was live streaming it but also had himself picture-in-picture in the corner of the screen offering some commentary. And when this came up, i think he punched the air. Or at least clapped. Cash. Flow. Positive. Something Tesla has claimed in the past would happen but never did, however Elon carefully chose his words to say they'd be cash flow positive and GAAP net income positive in Q3 & Q4 of 2018. He was careful to say "expecting" which backed off the word "definitely" he's used previously. Elon also said he doesn't expect to raise any capital during the year through debt or equity.   CHINESE PRESENCE I got the feeling they weren't meant to talk about China, but it happened! They confirmed Shanghai as the rumours suggested for Giga there, and all operations under one roof. From raw materials in, to complete cars out. It follows the very recent news that China is now allowing EV makers to build facilities there without needed a joint venture with a domestic company. Tesla's revenue in China has risen from $319 million annually in 2016 to over $2 billion in 2017, with a presence there they will soon avoid import tariffs. Oh and not to forget Europe, they're deciding the location. And in total, they see a need for 12 worldwide Gigafactgories.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Friday 23rd February 2018. On the podcast today… we’ll talk about the island Renault are taking over for an experiment with electricity, and how Williams F1 team could be making the next EV you buy.   HARLEY ELECTRIFIES   Well as Steppenwolf wrote in 1969, get your motor running, head out on the highway.  If you ride a Harley Davidson, maybe you were born to be wild. But from next year you might be heading out on electrons instead. The first e-motorcycle from Harley is coming in 2019.   They’re spending between $25-50 million dollars on e-bike development but, on their recent earning call, weren’t ready to share more details.  All we’ve seen is their LiveWire concept but the specs weren’t spectacular a couple of years ago – 50mile range and 93mph top speed. For any Harley Davidson rider that is simply not good enough.   Big jumps in EV technology happened in the car world but there are surprisingly few really large bike makers moving forward with e-bikes.   New registrations of motorbikes in the US have been flat since 2008, the age of owners has also been getting older, so maybe a move to electrification with top performance, it might inspire a new generation or riders.   https://techcrunch.com/2018/02/22/harley-davidsons-ev-debut-could-electrify-the-motorcycle-industry/   ISLAND LIFE IS GOOD FOR RENAULT’S POWER PROJECT   Next, how do you fancy a trip to a sunshine island which Renault is using as a proving ground for renewables and EVs? Porto Santo is where Renault have been allowed to install the perfect trifecta of climate friendly energy and transport – renewables, feeding into used EV batteries, which feed into your electric car.   Now this isn’t exactly desert island territory, there are over 5,000 residents but they find themselves in the same situation as the small islands in American Samoa, which you might have read about in 2016…when Tesla completed their purchase of SolarCity they wired up the island with Powerpacks to help reduce the diesel shipments they were reliant on for generators, and to keep the lights on.   Porto Santo will get 14 Zoes and 6 Kangoo vans, they’ll get 40 charge points, they’ll get V2G and even second-life battery packs for cloudy or non-windy days. Porto Santo will be a proving ground because if it works for 5,000 residents the technology could be scaled up.   http://www.thedrive.com/tech/18666/renaults-smart-island-is-powered-by-renewable-energy-and-used-electric-car-batteries   FORMULA 1 TEAM COULD MAKE YOUR NEXT ELECTRIC CAR   'Tis the season to unveil Formula 1 cars, with their V6 hybrid engines. But one of the racers, Williams, is unveiling a lot more.   Williams Advanced Engineering has a new lightweight EV platform, which is basically a skateboard design of batteries with 4 wheels, advanced suspension and a crash structure. It includes innovations in battery design and particularly cooling – which will need to be advanced if we want to increase charge rate – and in turn bring down rapid charging times.   Williams will make the platform available for others to build their own electric vehicles on top of.   http://www.insidecomposites.com/exhibitions-conferences/williams-to-unveil-new-approach-to-evs/   IT’S ALIVE! TESLONDA IS THE MASH-UP OF YOUR NIGHTMARES   Let me introduce you to another Frankenstein project - The Teslonda. Now we’ve seen these from people like Quest in the UK who made an estate / shooting brake Tesla but cutting the top off, and bonding on some carbon fibre. That was a less in design and engineering, it looked gorgeous and they’ve confirmed there’s more to come.   However this new project one, not so much along the same lines. This is a 1980s Honda Accord which has a Tesla drivetrain bolted inside and because of that the rear wheels have to be a lot wider than the original Accord body.  It’s fair to say, this isn’t exactly a looker, but boy does it go. It’s made for drag racing, and Jimmy (the man responsible) says 2.5 seconds 0-60 is achievable.   And the mash up get worse, or better, depending on your point of view, as it uses a Chevvy volt battery pack to move the salvaged Tesla powertrain.   https://www.autoevolution.com/news/teslonda-is-a-tesla-powered-1980s-honda-accord-that-hits-60-mph-in-27-seconds-123737.html   VOLVO UNVEILS THE PLUG-IN V60   Well moving onto Volvo, and according to autonews.com, are accelerating their shift to EVs with a choice of new Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. The new Volvo V60 will be on the market soon, and of course Volvo were one of the first to promise a form of electrification will be on every new model starting in 2019.   This new V60 comes with a choice of two engines. There’s a T6 engine giving you 336hp alongside the electric motor, and the T8 Twin Engine PHEV, for 386hp with electric motor. U.S. customers will only get the larger engine but both models will be all wheel drive. The European choices will include petrol engines but also Diesel engines as well.   That’s a curious decision in the week Porsche said they would no longer be selling diesels because their customers don’t want them.  In January 2018 for example, in the UK, the market share of diesel PHEVs was tiny.   The V60 will be up against the likes of the Audi A4, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 series.   http://www.autonews.com/article/20180221/COPY01/302219937/volvo-speeds-up-electrification-with-new-v60-wagon   WHEN IT COMES TO BATTERIES IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY   Next we’re talking about battery prices and according to Bloomberg.com £100/kWh is the magic figure to get down to, which they’re predicting will be reached in 2025, that’s from £200/kWh at present. They say large cars and SUVs will be the first segments to reach price parity with internal combustion engines, whilst smaller city cars will require a price of $80/kWh to be price comparative.   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-02-21/the-battery-holds-the-key   AFRICAN ADVENTURE FOR POLISH EXPLORERS IN A NISSAN LEAF   And finally what’s the farthest you’ve driven an EV, and if you don’t have one but are thinking of it, what’s the farthest you’d go?  Well how about two explorers from Poland doing the first ever electric expedition across Africa.   Their journey just began using a first-gen Nissan LEAF. They say: Traveling across Africa is probably the hardest test for any vehicle, not only an EV," said Fiedler. "Poor roads, limited charging infrastructure and dramatically diverse weather conditions – from equatorial storms to the scorching heat of the Sahara – these are just a few challenges that we'll have to face during the expedition.   They say they’ve travelled over 4,000kms in Poland in the LEAF as a test.  The journey started in Cape Town last week and we’ll track their journey, as they travel across South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Cameroon, Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Mauritania and Morocco.   None of those places exactly have fast chargers every 100 miles! Good luck to them, we’ll follow their journey, and update you on the podcast.   http://www.autocarpro.in/news-international/ev-expedition-africa-begins-28167       Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
