La Raza Database Research Project is bringing awareness to police violence against Latinos. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: You wouldn't know it from the data, but Latinos are the second most likely demographic to be killed by law enforcement in the U.S, relative to their population. We only have these statistics now thanks to the work of La Raza Database Research Project, a group of volunteers in Southern California who are bringing awareness to systematic police violence against the Latino population. They estimate that almost 6,500 Latinos have been killed by police between 2000 and 2022 – but the data has been missing until this moment. In this unusual installment of our monthly “Meet the BIPOC Press” series, Laura and Senior Producer Jeremiah Cothren sit down with LF&F Social Justice Reporting Fellow, Roberto Camacho, who interviewed members of the Research Project to figure out why Latinos are so frequently misrepresented. Camacho also spoke with the mother and sister of César Antonio Rodriguez, a young man tragically killed by the Long Beach Police Dept in 2017 and misidentified in police records. Camacho is a Chicano multimedia journalist focusing on criminal justice reform, immigration and Chicano/Latino issues. Supreme Court justices seemed to agree courts should look at the totality of circumstances when analyzing whether a police officer's use of deadly force was reasonable. During arguments Wednesday, the US Supreme Court appeared ready to rule the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit had used the wrong test when it considered the claims of a mother who argues a Texas police officer unjustly shot and killed her son during a traffic stop in 2016. Cases and Controversies hosts Kimberly Robinson and Lydia Wheeler discuss the arguments in that dispute over the officer's use of deadly force and the likelihood of a future Supreme Court case over President Donald Trump's executive order on birthright citizenship. The order, which deems denies automatic citizenship to children born of immigrants in the US, was temporarily blocked by a federal judge on Thursday. Send us a Text Message.Welcome back to 50Tallk. This is episode 112 and the host's Victor & Cathy are happy to be back with you all again. This episode is the call before the storm for the craziness of the week. The Kingdom is off to the woods this week and then topping it off with a Family Reunion for three days this weekend. We are so excited to see family and also to just go out into nature and enjoy some time with our immediate family. Beers and fire here we come!Well let's et into some show topics right now. Our first topic this week is the Police Killing of Sonya Massey in Springfield, Illinois by a former Sheriff's Deputy named Sean Grayson. This piece of work has been fired (finally) and has been charged with three counts of 1st Degree murder and two other counts as well. The body camera footage was released about a week or so after the killing and it is very hard to watch and to listen to. I think the words this former police officer used were heartless and disgusting. This man should get everything he deserves for killing this woman. He is a heartless person and should have never been able to wear a police badge. Shame on the people who hired him and the people that kept him employed long enough to let this happen.Next up we are talking about Kamala Harris, our new Presidential Candidate for the Democratic party. Damn that sounds nice. The race has totally changed since this happened but Donald Trump is still the same racists, narcissists that he has always been. This guy hand the actual balls to go in front of a room full of Black Reporters at the NABJ conference in Chicago last week and show his entire ass. I mean the entire damn thing. He got put on "front street" from the moment he sat is ass down and it was a wonderful thing to see. There is a fabricated story coming out of the Paris Olympics having to do with a female boxer out of Algeria. Her name is Imane Khelif and her name is being dragged through the mud for no reason. It's a damn shame that people hear a story and they run with it. In this world of hate for anyone who isn't a certain race or looks a certain way or is anyway different from you people will disparage you. I'm not blaming the media I'm blaming hateful people because that's what it is. Keeping with the Olympics Cathy and I give the medal count as of Sunday evening and America is kicking ass. It's been a fun Olympic Games so far. The final story out of Wichita, Kansas about the stolen Jackie Robinson Statue is out. The big reveal will be happening Monday August 5th and a star studded group of former MLB'ers will be in attendance for the reveal. The person that stole the statue has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and the Legend of Jackie Robinson is alive and well at  McAdams Field for eternity. Our last topic for the show is about Cathy and I going to see Deadpool & Wolverine in the theater. It was a great movie. It was very entertaining and that's all we will say until next week. I will be giving spoilers and you can't stop me. Y'all have a good week and we will see you next time for episode 113. If you want to add anything to our conversation please feel free to email us at victor50talk@gmail.com

Every use of deadly force by police in the province requires an inquest to determine how and why it happened. In theory, this prevents fear or favour from influencing the decision whether or not to hold one, ensures that an initial investigation will not simply shut down a case, and offers every family suffering through a loss the chance to ask their questions, and get their answers. In practice? As a recent investigation has revealed, it rarely works that way. And the families of those killed by police are wondering where their answers are...GUEST: Marsha McLeod, investigative reporter with The Winnipeg Free Press

Warning: This podcast will show and discuss an unedited video of Eddie Irizarry being fatally shot by a Philadelphia Police, Mark Dial. Host Renaldo McKenzie and Co-Host, Donete Nelson will explore this and several other videos involving police brutality. The videos contain graphic language and violence. Viewer discretion is advised. On this powerful and dynamic episode of The Neoliberal Round Podcast, Renaldo and Donte provide insightful commentaries on the constant and sore issue of police brutality and question whether promises of reform were just a means to pacify the BLM. The Police are still not wearing body cams, still killing black men in certain communities and lying about it, while still benefitting from the protection of their unions and politicians even after the protests stemming from the Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Tyre Nichols, and countless other police killings, and the promises of change and reform. Still, police continue to abuse their power and violently kill black, brown, and Latino men in certain communities then retreat to their unions and the system for protection which applies a slap on the wrist. It is no wonder that Police continue to gun down certain people in diverse communities. The latest killing of Eddie Irizarry was more telling and Mark Dial, the Police Officer who fatally Irizarry, was even more telling of the police's constant brutality and how they are still supported by their unions and the system. He had initially lied that Irizarry had lunged at him with a knife and refused to participate in the investigation. When the body cam video was released showing that Irizarry was in his car when Dial quickly attacked with gun drawn and fired six times killing Irizarry, he turned himself in and was only given a $50, 000.00 bail and his union released a statement that they were still behind Dial. Dial's attorney reported that Dial was legally justified as he was in fear for his life. This is farfetched as there is no evidence of this, except the video showing the opposite of Dial's initial lie that Irizarry had attacked him. The podcast was a discussion of a post in The NeoLiberal Post by Renaldo McKenzie entitled: "When Police Serve and Protect, Becomes Lie and Betray" highlighting in various police killings how they use sly arguments, loopholes, and the system to continue to brutalize or to escape responsibility and accountability in their excesses. https://renaldocmckenzie.com/2023/09/when-police-protect-and-serve-become-lie-and-betray/ The Podcast discussed another police killing in New Castle Delaware where a 28-year-old was killed by police after a deadly chase. The police had a press conference but provided a convoluted & conflicted story & would not take questions from reporters. They conveniently do not have body cam video & demonize the victim by calling him a fugitive as if he is not innocent until proven guilty by a court of law, not by police. The podcast reminded us of the Tyre Nichols beating by Police leading to his death & the constant call for all police to wear body cams that work in the execution of their duties. Further, the podcast explores whether police unions should get involved in police excesses and killings since police officers are charged with serving protecting, and upholding the law and that is in question involving those they are charged to serve and protect, police should have the protection of their unions. Finally, the podcast shows how the legal system and legislature continue to preach reform while accommodating police flagrant adjustment of the reform requirement to wear body cam and the application of $50,00 bail involving police killings. This is a must-see podcast episode with background music, embedded videos, and artistic images interspersed throughout for a dynamic listening and watching experience. Glover, a black male NOLA native, was shot in the back by a White police officer (David Warren). Other officials then burned a vehicle with Glover's body in the rear. Suspicousy, Glover's skull disappeared. Many aspect of Fishman's book reveal truth about the System of White Supremacy. However, the portion of the book that describes the pornographic stash of high resolution, "unofficial" photographs of Henry Glover's body and likens them to lynching postcards of the early 20th century is especially revealing. A Black Lives Matter organization based in Polk County is joining the family of a Tampa man in questioning reports that he shot at police before they used deadly force during an April traffic stop.Carl Soto, vice president of Black Lives Matter Restoration Polk, told reporters at a Wednesday news conference outside Tampa police headquarters, that his organization had a witness and video that contradicted Tampa police accounts of the death of Jonas Joseph . Police reported that Jonas Joseph, 26, was driving a car that matched a description of one tied to an earlier shooting. They say Joseph pulled into the driveway of a home on East Palifox Street, tried to ram a police vehicle and then took off... crashing his car into a tree and then shooting at officers, five of whom shot back. Those officers were placed on administrative leave as the shooting was being investigated.2 years ago #:, #blm, #carl, #ed, #jonas, #joseph, #killing, #of, #opperman, #pastor, #police, #report, #sota, #spreaker

In 2015, a police officer shot and killed LaKeith Smith's friend, A'Donte Washington, during a burglary gone wrong. But years later, LaKeith is the one behind bars for murder. LaKeith was originally given a sentence of 65-years, after beingc onvicted of burglary, theft, and something called felony murder. In certain criminal cases, the felony murder rule allows a person to be charged with murder even if they're not the one who did the killing. Experts say it's a legal charge that disproportionately hurts young, Black and brown men. In a March resentencing hearing, a judge ruled that LaKeith's sentences could be served concurrently, thus reducing his overall time; but LaKeith's family and supporters were still left heartbroken, because even with this reduction, he's facing a 30-year sentence.Trymaine Lee spoke to LaKeith's mother, Tina Smith, about her family's continued fight for justice. And we talked to lawyer Leroy Maxwell and activist Daniel Forkkio, along with Andre Washington, the father of A'Donte Washington, about what true justice for his son would look like. Follow and share the show on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, using the handle @intoamericapod.Thoughts? The police killing of Tyre Nichols in Memphis generated a significant amount of conversation and coverage, while the killing of environmental activist Manuel Esteban Paez Terán in a Georgia state police raid just weeks later has gotten considerably less attention. This time in our monthly feature, Meet the BIPOC Press, Laura Flanders and Sara Lomax of URL Media talk with two journalists who have been reporting on these stories for local Black-led outlets. Is there anything in their response that might deepen how we think about power and race, racism, police and public safety? Our guests are Gavin Godfrey, Atlanta editor at Capital B, and Report for America corps member Brittany Brown, a reporter at MLK50: Justice Through Journalism where she covers criminal justice and labor in Memphis.“. . . We saw national media parachute into Memphis really covering the flashpoint moment that this was for the city . . . At MLK50, we're really focused on highlighting the continuing efforts that are going on every week.” - Brittany Brown“I think what separates our coverage from local coverage in the city is that we are trying to find out how this affects the people that are the most affected. Most of [the] local news is talking to officials, law enforcement officials, and then getting a couple of quotes and clips from protestors without a lot of context.” - Gavin Godfrey“Our communities need to have outlets . . . that are coming from the ground up and from our people. I'm really grateful that there is a new wave of Black media outlets that are doing the work in Atlanta, in Memphis, in Philadelphia, all over the country . . .” - Sara LomaxGuests:Brittany Brown: Criminal Justice & Labor Reporter, MLK50: Justice Through JournalismGavin Godfrey: Atlanta Editor, Capital BSara Lomax: Co-Founder, URL Media; President & CEO, WURD Radio The Show is listener and viewer supported.  That's thanks to you!  Please donate and become a member.Full conversation & show notes are available at Patreon.com/theLFShow Chapters: (0:00:00) - Covering Police Killings in the US(0:09:51) - Self-Care in Trauma Reporting(0:20:52) - The Legacy of Systemic Police Violence Chapter Summaries: (0:00:00) - Covering Police Killings in the US (10 Minutes)This episode of Meet The BiPOC Press with URL media focuses on two events that occurred weeks apart in different parts of the US and how they connect. The first is the police killing of Tyre Nichols in Memphis after a traffic stop, and the second is the killing of queer environmental activist Manuel Esteban Paez Terán in Atlanta during a police raid. The conversation covers the quantity of coverage these stories have received, the proposed ninety million dollar police training complex in the Walloni forest, the response of the public and the ongoing efforts of activists and community organizers. (0:09:51) - Self-Care in Trauma Reporting (11 Minutes)This episode of the Laura Flanders show focuses on the two recent police-involved killings of Tyre Nichols in Memphis and Manuel Esteban Paez Terán in Atlanta. The conversation addresses the calls for more training and how the proposed police training center in Atlanta has sparked fear in the predominantly black community. The roundtable also discusses the power dynamics of police brutality when officers are black as well as the importance of trauma-informed reporting and setting boundaries for self-care. (0:20:52) - The Legacy of Systemic Police Violence (9 Minutes)This discussion focused on the events in Memphis over the past year, including the election of the first Democratic District Attorney in decades and the swift response to the misconduct of police officers. Questions were raised about the role of democracy and consent in this response, in addition to the issue of public safety. The conversation then shifted to the survey conducted by the mayor on the proposed COPC City training center, in which 69% of the population were against it. The participants discussed the need to ask better questions, and to listen to the people in order to facilitate a dialogue towards a solution.
