Boots Balls and Bras returns this week to review the Subway Cup final, where Chelsea ran out 2-1 winners against Manchester City. Fara and Anita reflect on the "disgraceful" conditions that Pride Park's pitch was in, lifting the lid on what the players themselves thought of the surface pre-match.They breakdown what has been the key to Chelsea's immense unbeaten run under Sonia Bompastor, and what Man city need to do to improve in their next three outings against the Blues. The pair also delve in to Liverpool's surprise 3-1 victory against Man United in the WSL, and what is going wrong at Aston Villa? Could Crystal Palace survive, and drag Villa to the foot of the WSL table? They also discuss which current WSL player would they both dream of playing alongside, and who is the ultimate WSL GOAT?All of this plus much more on this week's episode. Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.Miami was the better team on Sunday night against Atlanta United at the Benz for Sunday Night Soccer, but the margins were very thin as both teams put on quite a display. Atlanta nearly found the Brooks Lennon to Latte Lath connection twice in the first half, but the second one was narrowly offside. Going from 2-0 up to 1-1 pretty quickly was a gut punch, Bartosz Slisz got caught in possession against a strong Miami press and Lionel Messi took the ball and scored a goal that maybe only he can with the scoop over Brad Guzan. After a pretty wide open rest of the match with both teams having chances to win it, it was Miami who took advantage of Atlanta losing focus as Luis Suarez was arguing with the referee (again). They played a short corner, Jordi Alba delivered a mostly uncontested cross to the back post where Fafa Picault was able to get behind Jay Fortune and head it back across the goal to nestle it into the far side netting. Fans threw things on the field after the final whistle as the referees left the field. Completely unacceptable and there should be repercussions for that, it shouldn't happen under any circumstance. Vancouver stayed perfect in MLS play with a win at Dallas. Nashville ended Philly's unbeaten start to the season. Sporting KC scored 3 goals in 12 minutes to come back to draw Minnesota in the orange ball extravaganza. Austin gave LAFC a taste of their own medicine with a 1-0 defense-led win. Zack Steffen was outstanding with 12 saves in Colorado's 2-1 win at San Jose. Orlando Pride started their defense of their NWSL title with a 6-0 thrashing of Chicago, Barbra Banda scored twice and assisted once. Newcastle won their first trophy since 1969, lifting the Carabao Cup by beating Liverpool 2-1. Liverpool goes from contesting for 4 trophies to only winning one. That one (eventually) will be the Premier League, the biggest one, but will it feel like a disappointment for Arne Slot's side? It shouldn't.Atleti had a 2-0 lead over Barcelona in the 70th minute, but ended up losing 4-2. Real Madrid kept pace with a win at Villarreal. Inter and PSG won to extend their leads in Serie A & Ligue 1. Chelsea's women won the Subway Women's Cup Final 2-1 over Manchester City in the first of 4 meetings between the teams in the next 12 days (Champions League quarterfinal & league match). The pitch was poor at Pride Park and did not suit the occasion. Sergio Ramos earned his first red card in Liga MX, I know you're shocked. A match in France was abandoned after Montpellier fans threw flares that started a fire in the stands as their team was trailing. This has happened far too often in France in recent years, but I don't know if the power brokers know how to stop it. Colombian professional players in the top two men's divisions and the top women's division have voted to strike over disagreements on multiple working conditions. They have not said when the strike might begin.
Flo Lloyd-Hughes is joined by Jessy Parker Humphreys and Becky Taylor-Gill straight from the Pride Park press box as Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-1 in the League Cup final. We chat through the poor pitch that got everyone talking and discuss whether City can build on this performance in the next three games against Chelsea. Blackburn Rovers' early struggles proved costly at Derby County and are the centre of discussion on the latest episode of Arte et Labore. Elliott Jackson was in the press box whilst Ryan Hildred represented part of a sold out away end as Rovers conceded twice in seven minutes at Pride Park. That proved decisive as they lost 2-1 on Saturday. Their performance gets picked apart, including the influence of the 'John Eustace factor'. Rovers' record against newly-promoted teams is shocking but why? It's a massive week ahead against two relegation strugglers. Hello Darkness, My Old Friend, we're in the relegation zone again... You host Andy, Dun and Bill pick the bones out of a disappointing 4 days as the R's early season form hits a sticky patch, and the fans pre-season optimism evaporates. This week's therapy session covers - Zeroes and Ones will not take us there (one for Jesus Jones fans there) - Goals are becoming hard to come by - Le Resistance - Nardi's incredible performance on Saturday, capped by a quadruple save that was all over Twitter at the weekend - Halleluj-aaaaargh. Has Lucas lost it? - Varane ran into hot water, late tackle on Batth leads to early Baath. - Why does it always rain on us? Travis scores deflection to put Rovers 1-0 up - Batth drains the life out of the game, tapping in from close range to make it 2. - Rangers score from open play but man of the match Pawson sees something no one else does and rules out Smyth's strike - Fans Forum gives cause for optimism - Marti, Xavi and JCS extend their stay - Dembele here to stay - Long term plan. Patience, patience, patience - Home comforts as the R's host Hull - R's fast start denied by perfect Pandur - Hull bring the Drameh to go 1-0 up. WHY DO WE HAVE TO ALWAYS GO 1-0 DOWN - Defensive disaster leaves Bedia alone in the box to make it 2 - Madsen scores the greatest penalty ever taken to bring us closer before the break - Second half sludge. Miller's third condems R's to lose 2 in 4 days. - There seems to be some hope in Saito, but can we cope right now? Nope - Major Mayoral Maelstrom. Mayhem! - Can't bring ourselves to talk about the election in Democracy Manifest. Too Depressing... - Too depressed for a Blighty Bulletin - Predictions: Our friends at Derby next. Can we salvage some Pride at at a prickly Pride Park? - One of us starts actually crying. (This may not actually be true) Can someone give us a hug? or at least 5 Stars, That might cheers us up a bit
It was an afternoon of chaos, controversy and drama - but Norwich City left victorious as their improvement under Johannes Hoff Thorup continues.
