To the Classroom: Conversations with Researchers & Educators
Today I welcome Dr. Maryanne Wolf for a conversation about the incredible reading brain: what happens in neural circuitry when we are reading words accurately, the many different ways to read, and her important thoughts on how to cultivate true reading engagement in children—and in ourselves. Later, I'm joined by my colleagues Gina Dignon, Molly Wood, and Lea Mercantini-Leibowitz, to talk about implications for the classroom. ****Read a full transcript of this episode and learn more about the show at jenniferserravallo.com/podcastLearn more about Dr. Wolf, her books Reader Come Home and Proust and the Squid, her global literacy work, and her intervention for dyslexic students at her website.More on the Singapore study Dr. Wolf mentions here. ****More about this episode's guest:Maryanne Wolf is a scholar, a teacher, and an advocate for children and literacy around the world. In this episode we're joined by Professor Maryanne Wolf to discuss Dyslexia. Prof. Wolf is the Director of the Center for Dyslexia, Diverse Learners, and Social Justice at the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, and the author of a number of books, including Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain (published HarperCollins), and Reader, Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital World (also published by HarperCollins). In our conversation, Prof. Wolf explains to us that reading is an invention, and that the human brain was never intended to read. We have to build a circuit in the brain in order to read; we don't enter the world equipped to do so. People with Dyslexia, though, have a differently organized brain, with patterns of organization that pre-date our invention of literacy and numeracy. As Prof. Wolf emphasizes, there are advantages that come with these differently organized brains, such as creativity, entrepreneurship, and non-linear thinking. Thus, Dyslexia is something to be understood, rather than overcome. Team members on the episode from The Two Cities include: Dr. Amber Bowen, Dr. John Anthony Dunne, Stephanie Kate Judd, Rev. Daniel Parham, Dr. Madison Pierce.

Joining us on Luminate this week is Brian Smith. Brian is the founder of UGG boots, a brand that started from humble beginnings and went on to become a multibillion-dollar global icon. Graduating in 1978 as a Chartered Accountant in Australia, Brian came to California looking for the next big opportunity to bring back to Australia. While studying at the UCLA Graduate School of Management he observed that there was no sheepskin footwear in the US. With only $500 in capital to start, he imported boot samples and over the next seventeen years built the UGG Australia brand into a multi-million dollar international enterprise. He sold in 1995 and the brand has continued to grow to exceed a billion dollars in annual sales for the past seven years. Brian has authored the book “The Birth of a Brand – Launching Your Entrepreneurial Passion and Soul.” If you're an entrepreneur looking to build a successful brand, don't miss it!

“I grew up a witness,” Mike Rose wrote, “to the intelligence of the waitress in motion, the reflective welder, the strategy of the guy on the assembly line. This then is something I know: the thought it takes to do physical work.” Mike Rose died in August, yet the particular way he saw the world resonates more than ever before as our debates about the future of school and work only intensify. When was the last time you read a book cover to cover? And if you are still able to do this, do you feel you read in the same way you did, say, 20 years ago? How is the decline in our collective attention span affecting our ability to read and, by extension, our collective capacity for knowledge, wisdom and art? What do we lose when we lose our ability to focus? This was such a fascinating conversation, with two people who have given this question a great deal of thought. We all know that the future of education has changed since COVID-19 but what that future looks like for students and teachers is a clear as mud. Educators know that at the core of that change in education is a collaboration with peers and amongst teachers and incorporating meaningful critical thinking exercises for students to learn from. That future also entails a thrust for creativity to be inserted into teacher’s lessons requiring students to use creativity to show mastery of those lessons, and for all stakeholders to communicate effectively using 21st-century tools like personalized and audio and video.David Preston the author of Academy of One: The Power and Promise of Open-Source Learning. David is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles where he received a B.A. in Communication Studies and a master’s degree in Teacher Education and completed a Ph.D. in Education Policy from the UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information studies. David began his educational career at UCLA and taught there for eleven years. Being challenged by a high school principal stating that research doesn’t always equate to teaching practice David took him up on his offer. In this episode, we talk with David about open-source learning and why education is more than books and tests. We also talk to David about why it’s essential to teach students to use tools like the internet to collaborate and communicate effectively with their peers, as classroom assignments. We also discuss training and professional developments he offers to teachers and schools to incorporate the Academy of One into their curriculums.Flipboard Education Resources for Black History Month Flipboard EDU Magazine Flipboard Educators Blog Copyright Chillhop Music - https://chll.to/b9bb917bCopyright Chillhop Music - https://chll.to/6cd0b356Copyright Chillhop Music - https://chll.to/fae889b3Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/FlipEDU?fan_landing=true)

067 | Brian Smith Shares How Pamela Anderson Gave UGGs Their BIG Start! Brian Smith, is the founder of the world famous UGG Australia Brand, a furry warm boot, that I’m sure many of you are familiar. While studying at the UCLA Graduate School of Management he observed that there was no sheepskin footwear in the US. With only $500 in capital, he imported boot samples and over the next seventeen years built the UGG Australia brand into a multi-million dollar international enterprise. He sold in 1995 and the brand has continued to grow to exceed a BILLION dollars in annual sales for the past three years. Brian has authored the book “The Birth of a Brand – Launching Your Entrepreneurial Passion and Soul.” Have you ever spent hours, maybe even days, working on the perfect presentation? Only, to find out that you won’t have the opportunity to actually share everything that you’ve spent time creating? This week’s guest, Brian Smith, has experienced this exact situation and it actually changed the trajectory of his business for the positive! The UGG brand wasn’t successful from the start. In fact, Brian faced a ton of adversity and ended up having to get crafty when it came to selling the boots he had acquired. Brian shares how a photo of Pamela Anderson, on the set of Baywatch, wearing UGGs, changed his whole business. In this episode, Brian shares how planning the perfect presentation doesn’t always end up like it’s supposed to, BUT how it often ends up even better. Grab your copy of my FREE Checklist “5 Ways To Come Back From Sales Rejection” and turn that NO into a WIN! Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Brian Smith. Brian shares who he is and what he’s most famous (UGG Australia Brand) for, plus what he’s been up to lately. Every business is conceived by someone, it’s important to remember that it starts as an infant, just laying there - don’t give up at this point. Some wisdom from Brian! Brian’s first major NO came his very first year in business. He purchased 500 sheepskin boots and only sold 28 TOTAL. He shares the full story in this episode! Every surf shop shut Brian and his boots down, so he started taking them to street fairs and swap meets. The enthusiasm of the people purchasing the boots is what kept him motivated to sell. The Pitch Queen shares her idea to keep an acknowledgement folder of the kind things people say, so that you can look through it when you feel down. When Brian first started advertising his boots, he used models to model the boots and all of the surfers who he was selling to thought UGGs were so fake. Brian realized he had been marketing to the wrong people, in the wrong way using the wrong models. When Brian shifted his advertising to attract his ideal client, his revenue went from $20K to $200K. Brian tried to get into all of the big box stores, Montgomery Ward, Nordstroms, etc. - but, no one wanted to bring him in. He explains why they wouldn’t take him and what he did to eventually get there, in this episode. “Most people in the world really want to help out a young entrepreneur getting started.” ~ Brian Smith Brian was trying to get onto the cover of USA Today and was able to set-up a meeting with their fashion editor. However, his 45 minute presentation was cut down to 5 minutes. Wonder why? Listen to this episode for the FULL story! The 5 minutes with the fashion editor helped change the entire trajectory of the UGG Australia Brand. Brian advises that if you hit a wall in your business, you must find another way around it. “Once you start out on a path, the evidence of what you want will hit you.” ~ Brian Smith Brian shares what he would tell his younger self. Brian believes that passion for what you’re doing only comes after working hard on it for a long period of time - he shares what he means by this, in this episode! Aired Wednesday, 9 May 2018, 8:00 PM ETStefania Magidson – Searching for the White MagicianIt has been said by philosophers and seers that we are “spiritual beings having a human experience.” What does that mean? If it is, in fact, true, what is our purpose and why are we here? Does it mean that within each of us is profound and timeless knowledge, the potential for doing great good and the manifestation of what is foundational to every faith and religion, loving and caring for one another? My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Stefania Magidson, has lived this path. Stefania was born in Romania and immigrated with her family to the United States in 1983. She received a BS in Health Education and a Master’s in Applied Spiritual Psychology. In 2002, she founded the Blue Heron Foundation, one of the largest non-profit organizations in the Romanian Diaspora, focusing on improving the quality of life of Romanian and Moldovan orphaned youth by providing them access to life’s opportunities through merit based college scholarships. To date, the organization has raised more than $2,000,000, has awarded more than 300 scholarships and has touched the lives of more than 2,900 young people. Stefania is a supporter of the UCLA Graduate School of Education, The Everychild Foundation and many more educational and philanthropic organizations. You can find out more about her work at blueheronfoundation.org and she joins me this week to discuss her book, Searching for the White Magician, a series of dialogues where she explores themes ranging from immigration and philanthropy to spiritual psychology and self-realization.

This understanding is powerful, as hundreds of people in his keynote speaking seminars tell that they were about to give up on their dream, but now they identify themselves in one of the early phases. This gripping story of ecstatic highs and crushing lows of UGG, and Brian show how you can dig deep to overcome every obstacle in your path. Called The Birth Of A Brand, the book is available on Amazon, and you can download the first chapter free from his website, www.BRIANSMITHSPEAKER.com. www.BRIANSMITHSPEAKER.com https://twitter.com/briansmithugg https://www.facebook.com/BrianSmithUGGFounder/

In this episode we have Brian Smith, founder of the UGG Australia brand. Graduating in 1978 as a chartered accountant in Australia, Brian came to America looking for the next big opportunity to bring back to Australia. While studying at the UCLA Graduate School of Management he noticed there was no sheep skin footwear in the U.S. With only $500 in capital he imported boot samples and over the next 17 years built the UGG Australia brand into a multi-million dollar international enterprise. He sold it in 1995 and the brand has continued to grow to exceed a billion dollars in annual sales for the past three years. When you decide to jump in, you don’t know everything. Why should you? There are a lot of things Brian didn’t know that would have stopped him had he known. But once you have jumped in and started these then just become obstacles you have to overcome, they don’t become road blocks that stop you from moving. You can’t give birth to adults. Every business started with someone conceiving the idea and then giving birth. The birth of UGG was buying six pairs of samples. But then every business goes through infancy and just lays there and every once in awhile you get a giggle out of it but you keep feeding it and changing the diapers and eventually it will start toddling. The business is getting articles or blog posts and customers are writing reviews and you are getting orders. Then it moves into youth, orders are coming in and production is good. If it’s a really good business it will hit the teen years. You want to be at every party in town. It’s a stupid dangerous phase for a business because it’s tempting to do all these big adult things you aren’t ready for. But eventually you get through that and it becomes a mature adult of a business. You have to figure out what it is your market wants and then design your advertising to make them want to be in the picture. Find out who your target is and in a small way give them credibility so they know your product is what they are looking for. Nearly always your most disappointing disappointments will become your greatest blessings. The quickest way for a tadpole to become a frog is to live every day happily as a tadpole. There is nothing you can do to accelerate time, it just has to pass. The key word here is happily. You might as well get on to something you like doing while you’re waiting for the big thing to happen. Advice Don’t move out of your day job until you are forced to do it because the new business demands your time. Try to find out what you can do better than everybody else and do it. Once you start out and really focus on something you will become an expert very quickly. It doesn’t matter what the product or service is, once you become an expert the money will start flowing. If you are going to be an expert on something, it better be something you like. If you are on the brink of becoming an entrepreneur, you’re about to be born. Just jump in, whatever you have conceived give birth to it. Take the first step but don’t mortgage your life for it. Start small and enjoy the ride because it’s going to be a fun one. http://www.briansmithspeaker.com/ () Brian Smith was born in Australia, where he developed his love of surfing. A chartered accountant, he studied at the UCLA Graduate School of Management, and with $500 of start-up money, he founded UGG Imports to bring sheepskin footwear to America. After seventeen years, as sales reached $15 million, he sold the business to Deckers Outdoor Corporation. The UGG brand has since exceeded $1 billion of international sales times over. A passionate innovator and entrepreneur, Brian is one of the most sought after business leaders in the country today. As a media guest and inspiring speaker, he is committed to teaching his breakthrough business strategies to entrepreneurs and translating personal vision and spirituality into company culture. Brian spends his time with family and friends in Southern California, still surfs, plays golf and attempts to improve the planet everyday. Strategies used to fund business We didn’t know what our strategy was back then. None of us had the money, so Doug and I borrowed $500 to buy the first samples from the manufacturer. Founders Doug was his surfing buddy. Brian saw a photograph in the surf magazine, looked at Doug and asked, “Hey Doug, you wanna go into business? We are going to be millionaires.” How did you choose the name for your company and how important was that in establishing your brand? Nobody knows who started the name Ugg. The name was pretty generic in Australia, but in American law, nobody had brought in sheep skin boots and stayed there, so I was the first one to register the name. Do you think Ugg boots for men will make a comeback with Tom Brady back in the scene? It already has. We originally made it a hit with surfers. Then all the moms were buying it for the kids at Christmas. Then got in the snowboard and ski market. But when we went back east, we discovered in Minnesota that ice hockey was bigger than surfing and every kid has to go to the rink and they have to change shoes. And so these moms had to sit in these 40 degree rinks watching and it was a perfect market to switch over and I started sponsoring pro hockey players and that’s what got it kicked off. So when I sold the company, the new company Decker’s Corp took it on and that’s when they started to realize that they had to build a men’s market. And Tom Brady was a natural. Describe a moment when you felt like giving up I should have given up after selling those 28 pairs that first year. But I couldn’t because I had $15,000 and 480 pairs left in the warehouse. So I couldn’t give up and started selling in swap meets.Believe it or not, the biggest sales came from opening up the van at Malibu beach. HUGE SUCCESS Just starting is the most success I’ve had. Superpower The reason why Ugg and everything exists is the result of my tenacity. It took me 10 years to graduate as an accountant for a 4 year course. I refused to give up. And then when I quit and got into the Ugg business, there were so many times, so many disasters when I could have just stopped. But I just had this tenacity that now I believe in it. I don’t care how hard it is right now, I think I can overcome this obstacle. Kryptonite Every person has an element of this. It’s doubting your self worth. Overcoming that negativity and lack of self-worth and identity. That’s always been my biggest Achilles heel. IF YOU CAN HAVE ANY SUPERPOWER… Capacity for unselfish love. If you can take every action of your day as a loving action, as long as I have that knowing that I’m doing the best I can and the best for everybody, then you end up being not so affected by all the pricks out there that get in your face and sometimes you just begin avoiding them.
