Episode 227In this episode, Jan Hasbrouck discusses the critical components of reading fluency, focusing on automaticity and its measurement through words correct per minute (WCPM). The discussion highlights the relationship between fluency and comprehension, the role of oral reading fluency in assessing student progress, and the importance of frequent assessments in the classroom. Jan also reflects on recent research findings from NAEP scores that challenge previous assumptions about fluency and automaticity, emphasizing the need for educators to adapt their understanding and practices based on evolving research. The discussion also touches on the debate between repeated reading and wide reading, advocating for an approach to reading instruction that incorporates both methods. Hasbrouck encourages educators to embrace continuous learning and adapt their teaching strategies based on evolving research.Resources Hasbrouck Tindal 2017 ORF Norms Chart2018 NAEP Oral Reading Fluency Study by White, S., et. al. This framework helps educators grasp the diverse factors influencing how students learn. Nancy Young and Jan Hasbrouck, editors of the new book Climbing the Ladder of Reading & Writing: Meeting the Needs of All Learners help us navigate through the four color-coded levels—ranging from those facing the most challenges to those who begin reading effortlessly—emphasizing tailored teaching methods and the nuanced nature of literacy instruction. Highlighting the pivotal roles of classroom organization and data-driven grouping, the episode underscores the necessity of flexible teaching approaches. Concluding with insights on assessment tools and collaborative strategies, they share what it takes for effective differentiated instruction.TakeawaysLearning to read and write in English is a complex process influenced by internal and external factors.Instruction cannot be one size fits all and must be differentiated based on students' needs. The Ladder of Reading and Writing infographic provides a visual representation of the continuum of literacy development.Dosage of instruction varies for different students, with some needing more guided practice and others needing less.Observation and data collection are crucial for effective differentiation and instruction. Alexis Hasbrouck is currently a swing on the North American tour of Hamilton and my guest for the next two episodes! Alexis has been dancing since she was three years old, studying absolutely everything: ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, pointe, musical theatre dance, contemporary, lyrical, you name it. This week, Alexis talks about the musical theatre program at Rider University (which she loved!) and taking a year off to do Cats on the Royal Caribbean Oasis cruise ship. By the time Alexis was ready to finish her last semester, COVID hit and her whole college experience moved online. While Alexis waited for the entertainment industry to open back up she found her second true love: teaching elementary school special education, which she hopes to return to someday. After leaving what Alexis describes as a very toxic atmosphere doing Cats, she joined the first national tour of Moulin Rouge and had an incredible time. She was so thrilled to be a part of it, she learned everything she could, and she never took a second of it for granted. All the while, Hamilton kept calling... In a shocking case that has rocked Virginia, former University of Richmond basketball star, Kassceen Weaver, began his trial on Monday for the alleged murder of his young son and the subsequent concealment of the body in a freezer for several years. Weaver, now 50 years old, has been indicted with felony murder, felony child neglect, and concealing a dead body. This harrowing case underscores the severity of domestic violence and child abuse, subjects that need immediate and uncompromising attention in our society. In May 2021, the tranquility of the Weaver's Chesterfield home was shattered when the police discovered the body of Eliel Adon Weaver, also known as Adon, hidden in a freezer in the garage. Authorities estimate that Adon, the youngest son of Kassceen and Dina Weaver, was under five years old at the time of his death. As the trial proceedings got underway, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Joshua Loren laid out the grim circumstances leading to Adon's tragic death. The discovery of Adon's body was prompted by a tip-off from his maternal uncle, who had been alerted to the disturbing secret by Adon's mother. Police later uncovered the child's body, sealed in a vacuum bag and stashed away in a storage bin within a large freezer. Autopsy reports on Adon presented a horrifying picture of the child's final moments, revealing multiple instances of blunt force trauma, including a skull fracture and numerous rib fractures. These findings implicated Weaver, a stay-at-home father and primary caregiver, who was responsible for Adon's well-being and home-schooling. The defense, led by attorney Emilee Hasbrouck, painted a different picture, arguing that Weaver's actions were driven by grief, not malice. The defense suggested that Weaver, devastated by his son's death, chose to preserve Adon's remains in the freezer. This, according to Hasbrouck, was a desperate attempt to hold onto a piece of his son, rather than a nefarious attempt to hide evidence of wrongdoing. During the trial, the court heard testimony from Adon's mother, Dina Weaver. She recounted the chilling events of October 23, 2018, when she received a call from Kassceen. He had told her that Adon had passed out and was not breathing. Despite her pleas to take Adon to a hospital, Kassceen resisted, allegedly due to fear of losing their other child due to Adon's apparent bruises. The shocking revelations surrounding Adon's death have left the community in shock and mourning. The tragic tale of Adon Weaver serves as a stark reminder of the insidious nature of domestic violence and child abuse, as well as the urgent need for societal and institutional vigilance against these horrors. As the trial continues, our thoughts remain with those affected by this tragic event. Kassceen Weaver, once celebrated for his athletic prowess, now stands in the shadow of these grave allegations. As the community awaits justice for Adon, this story reinforces the fact that behind closed doors, even seemingly normal families can harbor disturbing secrets. Whether Weaver will choose to testify in his own defense remains to be seen. This case, with its layers of sorrow and controversy, underscores the importance of maintaining a vigilant eye on potential signs of child abuse and domestic violence in our communities. She opens the episode talking about her start with literacy, underscoring how she was one of the lucky ones who learned how to teach reading correctly in college. Dr. Hasbrouck also discusses what it's like to combat skepticism—both of the Science of Reading and the power of assessment. She then goes on to talk about the book she co-authored on student-focused coaching and ends the episode by addressing assessment anxiety directly, including a discussion of where it comes from, the importance of progress monitoring, and more!Student-Focused Coaching by Jan Hasbrouck, Ph.D., Daryl Michel, Ph.D.
According to historic Huguenot Street in the Hasbrouck Family Association, “it is generally excepted that virtually all Hasbrouck's in America I just sent it from the brothers Jean and Abraham, French Huguenots, who both arrived in America in the early 1670s.” They fled Europe because of religious persecution. Their stone houses , built by their families, in the 1700s, still stand on Huguenot Street in New Paltz, New York. It is here that our story of Jonathan Hasbrouck, who built what would become Washington's Headquarters, begins.
On July 4, 1850, Washington's Headquarters in Newburgh, NY became the “nation's first publicly owned historic site.” Before it became his headquarters it was the home of the Hasbrouck family and noted patriot Col. Jonathan Hasbrouck.

Using real-world examples, Hasbrouck demonstrates how shifting the value of ethnography from simply identifying consumer needs to driving a more holistic understanding of a company or organization can help it benefit from a deeper understanding of the dynamic and interactive cultural contexts of its offerings. In doing so, he argues that such an approach can also enhance the strategic value of their work by helping them increase appreciation for openness and exploration, hone interpretive skills, and cultivate holistic thinking, in order to broaden perspectives, challenge assumptions, and cross-pollinate ideas between differing viewpoints.Recommended LinksJay Hasbrouck on LinkedInJay Hasbrouck's Personal WebsiteJay Hasbrouchk's Blog - The Ethnographic MindEthnographic Thinking: From Method to Mindset on AmazonEPIC 2021About Anthro to UXThe Anthro to UX podcast is for anthropologists looking to break into user experience (UX) research. Scott interviews Edward Hasbrouck about the effort to finally abolish America’s “selective service” requirement, the modern-day remains of what was once the draft. Hasbrouck explains how, after Nixon abolished the draft in the 1960s, Jimmy Carter reinstituted the system we have today, partially to combat national anxiety over the Iranian revolution and hostage crisis. Hasbrouck says that what the draft really is is an assurance to America’s war planners that there will always be an unlimited supply of infantry troops to fight any war the government decides to wage. Taking this power away means putting some of the power to decide when the U.S. will actually fight a war back in the hands of the American people, where it belongs. Discussed on the show: “‘Selective Service Repeal Act’ Introduced in Congress” (Antiwar.com) “Red Dawn (1984)” (IMDb) Bill Texts: US SB1139 Edward Hasbrouck is a regular writer at Antiwar.com and maintains the blog, Resisters.info. The faculty at Washington and Lee University recently voted to remove Lee from the name of the institution. Ultimately, this monumental decision rests with the board of trustees. In this episode, I speak with faculty members that represent three distinct perspectives on this issue: keep the name as is, remove Lee from the name, remove both Washington and Lee.

My aunt Debbie in Des Moines sent me some fantastic pictures of a great portable elevated plantar idea. She was at Lowes and they had taken two old Weber grills and had spray-painted them different colors. Then, they turned them into planters. In between the two of them they placed a bench. What a great idea. Fantastic idea a great way to repurpose old grills turn them into elevated bed that you could use for annuals - which is what they did. In my case, I'm thinking it is a fun way to have a small edible or herb garden - right by your grill! Brevities #OTD It's the birthday of Martha Washington, born on this day in 1731. The kitchen garden at Mount Vernon was said to have been Martha Washington's personal pride. Surrounded by 4-inch-brick walls her garden was protected and it also enjoyed a bit of a microclimate. In addition to the walls, there were pear trees and apple trees that lined the walkways and provided a windbreaker for the vegetables. There was even a cistern placed in the center of the garden; providing the garden with a steady supply of water. One expert stated, "Mrs. Washington had a passion for gardening and her summer residence at the Hasbrouck house allowed her to indulge in it." One admirer said, "Under her skillful hands, bloomed a garden like the desert of the Scriptures." #OTD It was on this day in 1832 that George Thurtell held his impressive ranunculus show. It was said that Thurtell had exhibited between 700 and 800 blooms; including 360 varieties. They were preeminent in beauty, variety, color, form, and size. Fourteen years after his ranunculus show, Thurtell was fined for horse-whipping a journalist on April 30, 1846. Two years later, he pled guilty to stealing from a house where he was living as the gardener. He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and he died serving his sentence. #OTD It was on this day in 1833 David Douglas' luck ran out. On the Rocky Island of the Fraser river at Fort George Canyon, Douglas's canoe was smashed into bits and Douglas himself barely escaped alive. All of Douglas's work: his specimens and all of his writings - covering the years from 1829 to 1833 - were lost to time. Before losing all of his work, in the spring of that year, Douglas had written a friend: "We can be carried into regions where we contemplate the most glorious workmanship of nature and where the dullest imagination becomes excited." Unearthed Words Here's The Rose Treeby William Butler he who was born on this day in 1865. 'O words are lightly spoken,' Said Pearse to Connolly, 'Maybe a breath of politic words Has withered our Rose Tree; Or maybe but a wind that blows Across the bitter sea.' 'It needs to be but watered,' James Connolly replied, 'To make the green come out again And spread on every side, And shake the blossom from the bud To be the garden's pride.' 'But where can we draw water,' Said Pearse to Connolly, 'When all the wells are parched away? O plain as plain can be There's nothing but our own red blood Can make a right Rose Tree.' Here’s a sweet diary entry for today by Canadian Naturalist Charles Joseph Sauriol (“Sar-ee-all”) who wrote these words on this day in 1938. "A beautiful June day. The kind of day which has made June's reputation…. Tonight I finished my flower beds entirely…. How pleasant it is to water from a hose, when one has known the effort of hauling water pail by pail." Today's book recommendation: The Flower Fix: Modern arrangements for a daily dose of nature by Anna Potter (Author), India Hobson (Photographer) The Flower Fix was a new book out in May of this year. Potter arranges easy to find seasonal blooms, along with found items such as twigs and dried fruit. And, she uses all kinds of containers. Potter is a florist at Swallows and Damsons. You can get your daily flower fix with her inspiring arrangements. Today's Garden Chore Sow Love-in-a-Mist or Nigella in your garden. It's one of my favorite flowers and I know I'm not alone; it is such a romantic blossom. It's a member of the Buttercup family. Although it comes in white and pink and lavender most gardeners are blown away by the blue version of love of Love-in-a-Mist. It's a favorite with pollinators and it's self-seeding - which, if you're lucky, will bring you more love in the mist through the years. Something Sweet Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart It was on this day in 1831 that the scientist James clerk Maxwell was born. Maxwell is remembered for his formulation of the classical theory of electromagnetic radiation. In 1922 but Albert Einstein visited the University of Cambridge his host announced that he is done great things because he stood on Isaac Newton shoulders. Einstein replied "No, I don't. I stand on the shoulders of Maxwell." In 1879 Maxwell wrote a letter to his friend William Thompson. It's a letter gardeners can delight in: Peacocks as Gardeners. We got our original stock from Mrs McCunn, Ardhallow. At that time (1860), the garden there was the finest on the coast and the peacocks sat on the parapets & banks near the house. Mr. McCunn was very fond of his garden and very particular about it, but he also cared for his peacocks... Whenever he went out, he had bits of bread and such for them. Mrs. Maxwell (my wife) always gets the peacocks to choose the gardener and they have chosen one who has now been seven years with us. The peacocks will eat the young cabbages, but the gardener tells them to go... They find it pleasanter to be about the house and to sit on either side of the front door. Mrs Maxwell will not send them unless on consideration they would be acceptable. Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

This week on Love and Revolution Radio, we speak with Edward Hasbrouck, who, while traveling across Europe by bicycle, is also organizing a campaign challenging the future of the US military draft. Find out where and when the next national hearings by the commission polling the public about the military draft are going to be held. And find out how the US military is eyeing the possibility of expanding draft registration to women . . . and also thinking about a universal conscription into the military that would included everyone from medical personnel to tech support to your grandmother. We need just a small step further to follow through on that to get draft registration ended, to abolish the Selective Service System, and most importantly to finally force the government to acknowledge that our people power limits the extent to which they can wage war." - Edward Hasbrouck, Draft Resister About the Guest: Edward Hasbrouck is author of the series "the Practical Nomad", one of the go-to authorities on international travel, an investigative journalist, and also a human rights activist and an advisor on travel-related civil liberties issues. Edward Hasbrouck is a long-time member of the War Resisters League and maintains one of the most comprehensive websites about "Selective Service," the draft, draft registration, and draft resistance. His website at http://www.resisters.info includes news about the current proposals to expand draft registration to women as well as men, and FAQs about what to do if you don't want to be drafted. Edward was one of 20 people who were prosecuted for organizing resistance to draft registration in the 1980s. When John came into the studio carrying 3 guitars I knew we were in store for a treat. Johnand#39;s bio reads like a PhD resume. Check it out on www.myspace.com/johnhasbrouck , but suffice it to say, he has studied resonator guitars and American finger picking styles for decades. John came to us through CAU alumni Matt Gandurski. They play together as "The Northside Southpaws", a totally left-handed, totally reso-phonic mandolin/guitar duo.
