After six great championship bouts ad CCSU and UConn's Rentschler Field, we've crowned our 2023 champions and voted in the final GameTimeCT Top 10 poll and the STAPLES WRECKERS are No. 1 following their thrilling, 21-20 Class LL championship victory over West Haven. Join hosts Sean Patrick Bowley and Pete Paguaga as they run through everything that happened during championship weekend, including recaps of all six state championship games and how they voted in the final top 10 poll. This week's special guest star, our first in over a month, is none other than newly crowned No. 1-ranked Staples coach ADAM BEHRENDS.  The Iowa native arrived in Westport from IMG Academy in Florida just four years ago and, after a near-disastrous 2-8 season in 2019, Behrends quickly molded Staples in to a contender. But after a 1-point loss to Fairfield Prep in the 2022 quarterfinals, the Wreckers developed a 2023 Mantra: Find the Point. And they did just that, avenging their playoff loss to Prep by a point and then avenging their Week 1 loss to West Haven by a single yard and one point: 21-20. Welcome back to the Bill Bradley Collective, where this week college football is back and with it a conversation about the current state of compensating collegiate athletes. In this brave new world where student athletes are finally able to obtain NIL (name, image, likeness) deals for their own profit, the landscape remains controversial and complicated. Join us as we examine the unprecedented television rights contract inked between the Big 10 and CBS; how female athletes across less-exposed collegiate sports have prospered under the NIL rules; NCAA efforts to reel NIL in with threats of an appeal to Congress; the expected sentiments of college football's white coaching elite; and finally another unanimous verdict from the panel in favor of compensating our scholar athletes. First we set the table with rants: as Zak throws jabs at a Collective cohort by highlighting some rather embarrassing truths about the man chosen to patrol the home sidelines of Rentschler Field this season; Ed continues to point the verbal flame thrower in the direction of Florida's small-handed senior Senator following some inane commentary decrying student loan relief; and finally Andrew talks LIV Golf's latest arrivals, the future of the PGA Tour's seasonal structure, and the greatness of the newly crowned Tour Champion.

You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial.  Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that television presenter, Billy Bush, went to high school at St. George's in Middletown? The nephew of President George H.W. Bush, cousin to President George W. Bush, and Governor Jeb Bush was a correspondent on Access Hollywood, hosted the Billy Bush SHow, and was added as a co-host of Today before losing his job to Donald Trump's Access Hollywood tape. He has since come back and now hosts Extra. Now for our feature story: A week after lifting most COVID-19 restrictions in the state, Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont said Wednesday that his focus is now on getting people back into their offices and back to normal summer activities. Lamont joined other state officials and business leaders at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford to tout the state's high vaccination rate and low coronavirus infection rate. “I have spent the last year-plus saying stay safe, stay home and today I'm telling you, get out of the damn house, come enjoy Hartford, get on a plane, visit a restaurant, visit an amazing hotel,” he said. Connecticut has seen new cases go from a seven-day average of about 427 cases per day on May 10 to just about 167 new cases, according to data from John's Hopkins University. That's down from more than 2,000 a day in January. More than 1.8 million people have been fully vaccinated in the state and more than 60% of Connecticut residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine, according to the governor's office. Connecticut Economic and Community Development Commissioner David Lehman said Connecticut's economic activity is about 92% of what it was pre-pandemic, which ranks 19th in the nation. “So, we are better than average, but we need to get that to 100% and really we need to get that beyond 100%,” he said. One of the state's first large-audience events in more than a year is scheduled for this weekend at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, which will host the NCAA lacrosse national championships. Michael Freimuth, the executive director of the Capital Region Development Authority, said more than 10,000 tickets had already been sold for Saturday's opening games. The event runs through Monday. Over 600 hotel nights have been booked for the event, half of them in downtown Hartford, he said. There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from Sea Bags in Watch Hill. Foodshare will continue to provide food to the Greater Hartford community through its drive-thru operation at Rentschler Field in East Hartford until the end of June. Foodshare has not seen a decline in the need and is now providing food to approximately 1500 households per day.“Even as the state begins its multi-phase reopening we know that the economic impact on families in this region will continue to be felt for a while,” said Jason Jakubowski, President and CEO of Foodshare. “We continue to be thankful to all of the volunteers and to Governor Lamont, Lieutenant Governor Bysiewicz and the Capital Region Development Authority for allowing us to continue to use Rentschler Field.”Based on a recent survey, Foodshare estimates that approximately 70% of those served at the drive-thru food distribution are new to food insecurity. Because of the economic impact, 69% of households said they had to choose between paying for food and paying other bills during the past month. Jakubowski said “We hope the free food will reduce the need to make difficult tradeoff decisions.”Important information to share with the community:Distribution dates: WEEKDAYS Monday, June 1 through Tuesday, June 30; 8:30 am – 12:00 pm.Address: 615 Silver Lane, East Hartford, CT 06118 – Silver Lane entrance; gates will close at NoonOne allocation of food per car per day to ensure that we have enough food for everyone. This emergency food distribution at Rentschler Field is in addition to Foodshare’s ongoing efforts to provide food to a network of over 200 pantries, community kitchens, and Mobile Foodshare sites throughout the region.Community members unable to drive to East Hartford can access help through the following:• Mobile Foodshare, an outdoor pantry-on-wheels.
