Host Sarah Henry is joined by Partner Solicitor Nusrat Uddin, Head of the Public Law and Human Rights department at Wilsons Solicitors. In this episode, Nusrat shares insights into her work, with a focus on modern slavery, forced labour, and human trafficking. She discusses several groundbreaking cases she has worked on, as well as her involvement in Business and Human Rights cases, particularly those addressing forced labour within supply chains. Nusrat Uddin specialises in public law and human rights, with a particular focus on modern slavery, forced labour and human trafficking. She brings cases against central and local government bodies for failing their duties, as well as claims against those who have exploited their workers. In 2023 she was awarded Public Law Lawyer of the Year in the Legal Aid Lawyer of the year awards. Nusrat also specialises in Business and Human Rights work. She has provided evidence for several US investigations into complaints against companies, from the fashion industry through to rubber gloves. US authorities have banned products from entering the US where indicators of forced labour in supply chains have been found. She believes the UK's approach is far weaker and is critical of the Modern Slavery Act's approach. Nusrat's team have pioneered the first case against the UK authorities in relation to forced labour in their own supply chains, which settled with the government conceding and agreeing to improve their due diligence. The case was covered widely in the media and Nusrat was interviewed by Channel 4 News which can be seen here. She is currently building a second case in relation to the government's due diligence of Uyghur made products in their supply chain. Nusrat was instructed in the key Supreme Court case of Wong v Basfar 2022 dealing with diplomatic immunity in trafficking civil claims. The Supreme Court established for the first time worldwide, a current diplomat is not protected from claims of human trafficking. The judgment was groundbreaking with global political implications. Nusrat was presented with the 2022 Anti-Slavery Day Award for Outstanding Contribution to Reducing Vulnerabilities, in Parliament, for her work on this case. Nusrat has a particular focus on improving state support for victims of trafficking and modern slavery. Last year she was instructed in the lead case, K and AM v SSHD [2018] EWHC 2951 (Admin), challenging the cuts by the Home Office to subsistence monies paid to support victims. The High Court found the cuts to be unlawful, resulting in victim support being reinstated to the full amount, and rebates being paid of around £1 million. She often advocates for safeguarding support and accommodation for victims who are facing homelessness and risks of further exploitation. Nusrat was profiled as Lawyer in the News in the Law Society Gazette for the successful case. Nusrat was also awarded a Research Fellowship by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust to compare the UK's models of support to those in the US and Europe, for victims of trafficking and modern slavery who are involved with criminal prosecutions against their traffickers. She presented her research findings at the end of last year and made recommendations to improve the UK's systems. The research has been shared widely, including by Anti-Slavery International and endorsed by Luis deBaca who was the US ambassador for trafficking. She also gave oral evidence in Parliament to the Home Affairs Select Committee for their Inquiry into Modern Slavery in 2019. She outlined key issues for victims in relation to support services, immigration and the criminal justice system; particularly highlighting problems of victims being wrongfully criminalised by the police and immigration systems, instead of being correctly identified and protected. Nusrat is also currently instructed in a significant challenge to police policies in relation to this issue. In recognition of her work in this field, Nusrat was shortlisted in the 2019 Anti-Slavery Day Awards, for Outstanding Contribution to the fight against Slavery, in the Enabling and Supporting Survivor Rights and Entitlements category. Nusrat was Highly Commended in the 2019 Law Society Excellence Awards for Human Rights Lawyer of the Year. Nusrat was also shortlisted as a finalist for Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year 2019, in the Children's Rights category, organised by the Legal Aid Practitioners Group. Nusrat has gained international experience having worked in the Human Rights and Legal Aid department of BRAC in Bangladesh, (formerly Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee) one of the world's largest NGOs. She also volunteered at Al-Haq, a Human Rights NGO based in Palestine, building potential cases against corporations operating in the West Bank. Nusrat is currently a Trustee of Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Announcing the Pivotal Research Fellowship - Apply Now!, published by Tobias Häberli on April 4, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. We are happy to announce that the Swiss Existential Risk Initiative (CHERI) is now Pivotal Research and the CHERI research fellowship is called the Pivotal Research Fellowship. Apply for the Pivotal Research Fellowship this summer in London to research global catastrophic risks (GCR) with experienced mentors on technical AI safety, AI governance, biosecurity & pandemic preparedness. Research Fellowship The Pivotal Research Fellowship will take place in London from July 1st to August 30th, 2024. In our fourth research fellowship, we offer a 9-week program providing fellows with experienced mentors and research managers. Accepted applicants will have the opportunity to work full-time on GCR reduction focusing on emerging technologies: we look forward to hosting fellows working on technical AI safety, AI governance, biosecurity & pandemic preparedness. Overview of the fellowship Applicants submit a preliminary research proposal that outlines what they are interested in working on during the fellowship. Once accepted, fellows will collaborate with our research managers to adapt and optimize their proposal, and identify suitable mentors for their project. Fellows are mentored by experienced researchers and policymakers. A selection of our previous mentors can be found here. The research manager is a key contact throughout the fellowship, assisting with research, enhancing productivity, and providing career support. The fellowship will be located at the LISA offices in London. The offices are a hub for numerous significant initiatives within the GCR domain, including BlueDot Impact, Apollo Research, and the MATS extension program. Fellows receive a stipend of £5000, travel and accommodation expense support, as well as free lunch and dinner from Monday to Friday. Anyone is welcome to apply. We are particularly excited about applicants with little experience but a deep interest in GCR research. Application Deadline: Sunday, 21st of April, at 23:59 (UTC+1). Reasons to Apply Gain experience in AI safety and biorisk research through the guidance of your experienced mentor. Set yourself on a path to a meaningful career, focused on impactful work to improve global safety and security. Co-work at a GCR hub surrounded by like-minded researchers. In our experience, many excellent candidates hesitate to apply. If you're unsure, we encourage you to err on the side of applying. We also encourage you to share this opportunity with others who may be a good fit. Pivotal The fellowship's rebranding decision stems from the organization's operations no longer being confined to projects in Switzerland. As Pivotal, we strive to carry out various projects as a principal measure to support the GCR talent pipeline. We believe fellowships are still one of the most promising opportunities for upcoming researchers to get started with GCR research. In the past, fellowships have been a significant stepping stone, enabling participants to start impactful careers within and outside the GCR ecosystem. With Pivotal's rebranding, leadership has also been transitioning: Naomi Nederlof, who held the position of Director at CHERI, has transitioned to a role as an advisor at Pivotal. Tobias Häberli, previously the Program Director of CHERI, and Tilman Räuker, formerly a Technical AI Safety Research Manager at ERA, are now serving as co-directors of Pivotal. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: CLR Summer Research Fellowship 2024, published by Center on Long-Term Risk on February 15, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. We, the Center on Long-Term Risk, are looking for Summer Research Fellows to explore strategies for reducing suffering in the long-term future ( s-risks). For eight weeks, you will join our team at our office while working on your own research project. During this time, you will be in regular contact with our researchers and other fellows, and receive guidance from an experienced mentor. You will work autonomously on challenging research questions relevant to reducing suffering. You will be integrated and collaborate with our team of intellectually curious, hard-working, and caring people, all of whom share a profound drive to make the biggest difference they can. We worry that some people won't apply because they wrongly believe they are not a good fit for the program. While such a belief is sometimes true, it is often the result of underconfidence rather than an accurate assessment. We would therefore love to see your application even if you are not sure if you are qualified or otherwise competent enough for the positions listed. We explicitly have no minimum requirements in terms of formal qualifications and many of the past summer research fellows have had no or little prior research experience. Being rejected this year will not reduce your chances of being accepted in future hiring rounds. If you have any doubts, please don't hesitate to reach out (see "Application process" > "Inquiries" below). Purpose of the fellowship The purpose of the fellowship varies from fellow to fellow. In the past, have we often had the following types of people take part in the fellowship: People very early in their careers, e.g. in their undergraduate degree or even high school, who have a strong interest in s-risk and would like to learn more about research and test their fit. People seriously considering changing their career to s-risk research who want to test their fit for such work. People interested in s-risk who plan to pursue a research or research-adjacent career and who would like to gain a strong understanding of s-risk macrostrategy beforehand. People with a fair amount of research experience, e.g. from a (partly or fully completed) PhD, whose research interests significantly overlap with CLR's and who want to work on their research project in collaboration with CLR researchers for a few months. This includes people who do not strongly prioritize s-risk themselves. There might be many other good reasons for completing the fellowship. We encourage you to apply if you think you would benefit from the program, even if your reason is not listed above. In all cases, we will work with you to make the fellowship as valuable as possible given your strengths and needs. In many cases, this will mean focusing on learning and testing your fit for s-risk research, more than seeking to produce immediately valuable research output. Activities Carrying out a research project related to one of our priority areas below, or otherwise targeted at reducing s-risks. You will determine this project in collaboration with your mentor, who will meet with you every week and provide feedback on your work. Attending team and Fellowship meetings, including giving occasional presentations on the state of your research. What we look for in candidates We don't require specific qualifications or experience for this program, but the following abilities and qualities are what we're looking for in candidates. We encourage you to apply if you think you may be a good fit, even if you are unsure whether you meet some of the criteria. Curiosity and a drive to work on challenging and important problems; Ability to answer complex research questions related to the long-term future; Willi...

Announcing the Institute for Law & AI's 2024 Summer Research Fellowship in Law & AI - apply before EOD Anywhere on Earth, February 16! LawAI (formerly the Legal Priorities Project) are looking for talented law students and postdocs who wish to use their careers to address risks from transformative artificial intelligence, to engage in an 8-12 week long fellowship focused on exploring pressing questions at the intersection of law and AI governance. Fellows will work with their supervisor to pick a research question, and will spend the majority of their time conducting legal research on their chosen topic. They may also assist other LawAI team members with projects, as well as work on their career plans with the assistance of the LawAI team and other AI governance professionals in our network. Fellows will join the team some time between June and October, in a fully remote capacity. We're offering fellows a stipend of $10,000. The following are some examples of topics and questions we'd be particularly keen for fellows to research (though we are open to suggestions of other topics from candidates, which focus on mitigating risks from transformative AI): Liability - How will existing liability regimes apply to AI-generated or -enabled harms? What unique challenges exist, and how can legislatures and courts respond? Existing authority - What powers do US agencies currently have to regulate transformative AI? What constraints or obstacles exist to exercising those powers? How might the major questions doctrine or other administrative law principles affect the exercise of these authorities? First Amendment - How will the First Amendment affect leading AI governance proposals? Are certain approaches more or less robust to judicial challenge? Can legislatures and agencies proactively adjust their approaches to limit the risk of judicial challenge? International institutions - How might one design a new international organization to promote safe, beneficial outcomes from the development of transformative artificial intelligence? What role and function should such an organization prioritize? Comparative law - Which jurisdictions are most likely to influence the safe, beneficial development of AI? What opportunities are being under-explored relative to the importance of law in that jurisdiction? EU law - What existing EU laws influence the safe, beneficial development of AI? What role can the EU AI Act play, and how does it interact with other relevant provisions, such as the precautionary principle under Art. 191 TFEU in mitigating AI risk? Anticipatory regulation - What lessons can be learned from historic efforts to proactively regulate new technologies as they developed? Do certain practices or approaches seem more promising than others? Adaptive regulation - What practices best enable agencies to quickly and accurately adjust their regulations to changes in the object of their regulation? What information gathering practices, decision procedures, updating protocols, and procedural rules help agencies keep pace with changes in technology and consumer and market behaviors? Developing other specific AI-governance proposals - For example: How might a government require companies to maintain the ability to take down, patch, or shutdown their models? How might a government regulate highly capable, but low-compute models? How might governments or private industry develop an effective insurance market for AI? If you're interested in applying, or know of anyone who might be, you can find further details in our application information pack, and apply here before EOD February 16. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Apply to the PIBBSS Summer Research Fellowship, published by Nora Ammann on January 12, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. TLDR: We're hosting a 3-month, fully-funded fellowship to do AI safety research drawing on inspiration from fields like evolutionary biology, neuroscience, dynamical systems theory, and more. Past fellows have been mentored by John Wentworth, Davidad, Abram Demski, Jan Kulveit and others, and gone on to work at places like Anthropic, Apart research, or as full-time PIBBSS research affiliates. Apply here: https://www.pibbss.ai/fellowship (deadline Feb 4, 2024) ''Principles of Intelligent Behavior in Biological and Social Systems' ( PIBBSS) is a research initiative focused on supporting AI safety research by making a specific epistemic bet: that we can understand key aspects of the alignment problem by drawing on parallels between intelligent behaviour in natural and artificial systems. Over the last years we've financially supported around 40 researchers for 3-month full-time fellowships, and are currently hosting 5 affiliates for a 6-month program, while seeking the funding to support even longer roles. We also organise research retreats, speaker series, and maintain an active alumni network. We're now excited to announce the 2024 round of our fellowship series! The fellowship Our Fellowship brings together researchers from fields studying complex and intelligent behavior in natural and social systems, such as evolutionary biology, neuroscience, dynamical systems theory, economic/political/legal theory, and more. Over the course of 3-months, you will work on a project at the intersection of your own field and AI safety, under the mentorship of experienced AI alignment researchers. In past years, mentors included John Wentworth, Abram Demski, Davidad, Jan Kulveit - and we also have a handful of new mentors join us every year. In addition, you'd get to attend in-person research retreats with the rest of the cohort (past programs have taken place in Prague, Oxford and San Francisco), and choose to join our regular speaker events where we host scholars who work in areas adjacent to our epistemic bet, like Michael Levin, Alan Love, and Steve Byrnes and a co-organised an event with Karl Friston. The program is centrally aimed at Ph.D. or Postdoctoral researchers. However, we encourage interested individuals with substantial prior research experience in their field of expertise to apply regardless of their credentials. Past scholars have pursued projects with titles ranging from: "Detecting emergent capabilities in multi-agent AI Systems" to "Constructing Logically Updateless Decision Theory" and "Tort law as a tool for mitigating catastrophic risk from AI". You can meet our alumni here, and learn more about their research by checking out talks at our YouTube channel PIBBSS summer symposium. Our alumni have gone on to work at different organisations including OpenAI, Anthropic, ACS, AI Objectives Institute, APART research, or as full-time researchers on our own PIBBSS research affiliate program. In this episode of BackTable ENT, Dr. Tammara Watts, surgeon-scientist at Duke University, sits down with host Dr. Gopi Shah to discuss two exciting scholarship opportunities for medical students available through the American Head & Neck Society (AHNS). --- SHOW NOTES Fewer than 5% of practicing otolaryngologists identify as members of underrepresented minority groups (URM), and these scholarships directly address that disparity. Gopi and Tammara then transition to discussing the importance of diversity in otolaryngology more broadly. First, Tammara expounds on what is gained by having a workforce that includes individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Through the Dr. Eddie Méndez Research Fellowship and the Myers' Family Summer Fellowship, AHNS provides unique opportunities for aspiring otolaryngologists who identify as URM to connect with future colleagues. The Research Fellowship provides $10,000 to a medical student interested in spending one year immersed in otolaryngology research. It is unique in that AHNS provides a list of mentors (with bio-sketches) that interested applicants can connect with to formulate a research plan before applying. The Myers' Family Summer Fellowship financially supports a rising MS2 or MS3 student to gain exposure in Head & Neck Surgery. Next, Tammara offers tips on cultivating successful mentor-mentee relationships, emphasizing that mentors enjoy supporting their future colleagues, and that it is easier to do so when the mentee takes initiative. Finally, Tammara shares her philosophy regarding DEI. Though otolaryngologic patients come from all walks of life, their surgeons can't always conceptualize how their experiences influence their care. By supporting URM students interested in ENT, she (along with her AHNS colleagues) are helping create a workforce that can better understand and heal. --- RESOURCES AHNS's Dr. Eddie Méndez Fellowship: https://www.ahns.info/dr-eddie-mendez-research-fellowship/ AHNS's Myers' Family Summer Fellowship in Otolaryngology: https://www.ahns.info/myers-summer-fellowship/ Dr. Tammara Watts MD, PhD's Duke University Profile: https://headnecksurgery.duke.edu/profile/tammara-lynn-watts

I would seriously appreciate it! __________________________________________________ Sir James Chadwick (20 October 1891 – 24 July 1974) was a British physicist who was awarded the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the neutron in 1932. In 1941, he wrote the final draft of the MAUD Report, which inspired the U.S. government to begin serious atom bomb research efforts. He was the head of the British team that worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II. He was knighted in Britain in 1945 for his achievements in physics. Chadwick graduated from the Victoria University of Manchester in 1911, where he studied under Ernest Rutherford (known as the "father of nuclear physics"). At Manchester, he continued to study under Rutherford until he was awarded his MSc in 1913. The same year, Chadwick was awarded an 1851 Research Fellowship from the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851. He elected to study beta radiation under Hans Geiger in Berlin. Using Geiger's recently developed Geiger counter, Chadwick was able to demonstrate that beta radiation produced a continuous spectrum, and not discrete lines as had been thought. Still in Germany when World War I broke out in Europe, he spent the next four years in the Ruhleben internment camp. After the war, Chadwick followed Rutherford to the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, where Chadwick earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree under Rutherford's supervision from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, in June 1921. He was Rutherford's assistant director of research at the Cavendish Laboratory for over a decade at a time when it was one of the world's foremost centres for the study of physics, attracting students like John Cockcroft, Norman Feather, and Mark Oliphant. Chadwick followed his discovery of the neutron by measuring its mass. He anticipated that neutrons would become a major weapon in the fight against cancer. Chadwick left the Cavendish Laboratory in 1935 to become a professor of physics at the University of Liverpool, where he overhauled an antiquated laboratory and, by installing a cyclotron, made it an important centre for the study of nuclear physics. During the Second World War, Chadwick carried out research as part of the Tube Alloys project to build an atom bomb, while his Manchester lab and environs were harassed by Luftwaffe bombing. When the Quebec Agreement merged his project with the American Manhattan Project, he became part of the British Mission, and worked at the Los Alamos Laboratory and in Washington, D.C. He surprised everyone by earning the almost-complete trust of project director Leslie R. Groves, Jr. For his efforts, Chadwick received a knighthood in the New Year Honours on 1 January 1945. In July 1945, he viewed the Trinity nuclear test. After this, he served as the British scientific advisor to the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission. Uncomfortable with the trend toward Big Science, he became the Master of Gonville and Caius College in 1948. He retired in 1959. Known as incretin gut-derived hormones, GIP and GLP-1, that regulate secreted insulin levels after food consumption, these diabetes medications have come under hot fire regarding their use and safety. Are those using incretins to target obesity stealing lifesaving medications from diabetics? What exactly is obesity: is it a chronic disease, and is it purely based on the BMI quantity? Whose fault is obesity: the person and their eating patterns or genetics? How safe are Ozempic and the other injectables? Do you still have to count calories or exercise while on these drugs? Will you gain back your lost weight once incretins are stopped? We are joined today by Dr. Rocio Salas-Whalen, a double board-certified endocrinologist and obesity medicine specialist and the Founder of New York Endocrinology. She received her MD from Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez in Mexico in 2001, Internal Medicine Residency at Jacobi Medical Center in 2008, and Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Research Fellowship in Obesity Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2010. Currently standing as the Head Endocrinologist in her private practice, where she focuses on diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorders (including in-office ultrasonography and nodular fine needle aspiration biopsy), and obesity, Dr. Rocio is also a clinical instructor at NYU Langone Hospital. Online, she provides education on obesity seeking to tear down myths about the chronic disease. The Legal Priorities Project (LPP) is excited to announce that applications for our Summer Research Fellowship in Law & AI 2023 are now open. For 8–12 weeks, participants will work with researchers at LPP on how the law can help to mitigate existential risks from artificial intelligence. Fellows will receive a stipend of $10,000. If you are interested in carrying out research in this field and are considering using your career to mitigate existential risks, particularly those from AI, we invite you to apply. The application deadline is July 6 at 11:59 pm Anywhere on Earth; however, we will consider applications and select fellows on a rolling basis, so we encourage you to apply as early as possible. Current students are encouraged to check their academic calendars and apply with enough time to complete the fellowship, or as much of it as possible, before classes resume. We look forward to receiving your application! About the fellowship You will take the lead on a research project, with mentorship and support from other LPP researchers. We will support you in deciding what project and output will be most valuable for you to work towards, for example, publishing a report, journal/law review article, or blog post. We also expect fellows to attend regular meetings, give occasional presentations on their research, and provide feedback on other research pieces. Fellows will have the opportunity to select a research topic from a list prepared by LPP. Potential research topics for the summer may include: Tort law liability, including strict liability for abnormally dangerous activities, for activities related to the development and dissemination of transformative AI. Product liability law as a way to address harms from transformative AI. The role of litigation in mitigating risks from transformative AI. Potential obstacles for AI regulation presented by the major questions doctrine. First Amendment issues related to AI regulation. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Announcing the 2023 CLR Summer Research Fellowship, published by stefan.torges on March 17, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. We, the Center on Long-Term Risk, are looking for Summer Research Fellows to help us explore strategies for reducing suffering in the long-term future (s-risk) and work on technical AI safety ideas related to that. For eight weeks, fellows will be part of our team while working on their own research project. During this time, they will be in regular contact with our researchers and other fellows. Each fellow will have one of our researchers as their guide and mentor. Deadline to apply: April 2, 2023. You can find more details on how to apply on our website. Purpose of the fellowship The purpose of the fellowship varies from fellow to fellow. In the past, have we often had the following types of people take part in the fellowship: People very early in their careers, e.g. in their undergraduate degree or even high school, who have a strong focus on s-risk and would like to learn more about research and test their fit. People seriously considering changing their career to s-risk research, who want to test their fit or seek employment at CLR. People with a strong focus on s-risk who aim for a research or research-adjacent career outside of CLR and who would like to gain a strong understanding of s-risk macrostrategy beforehand. People with a fair amount of research experience, e.g. from a partly- or fully completed PhD, whose research interests significantly overlap with CLR's and who want to work on their research project in collaboration with CLR researchers for a few months. This includes people who do not strongly prioritize s-risk themselves. There might be many other good reasons for completing the fellowship. We encourage you to apply if you think you would benefit from the program, even if your reason is not listed above. What we look for in candidates We don't require specific qualifications or experience for this role, but the following abilities and qualities are what we're looking for in candidates. We encourage you to apply if you think you may be a good fit, even if you are unsure whether you meet some of the criteria. Curiosity and a drive to work on challenging and important problems; Ability to answer complex research questions related to the long-term future; Willingness to work in poorly-explored areas and to learn about new domains as needed; Independent thinking; A cautious approach to potential information hazards and other sensitive topics; Alignment with our mission or strong interest in one of our priority areas. Priority areas You can find an overview of our current priority areas here. However, If we believe that you can somehow advance high-quality research relevant to s-risks, we are interested in creating a position for you. If you see a way to contribute to our research agenda or have other ideas for reducing s-risks, please apply. We commonly tailor our positions to the strengths and interests of the applicants. Further details We encourage you to apply even if any of the below does not work for you. We are happy to be flexible for exceptional candidates, including when it comes to program length and compensation. Program dates: The default start date is July 3, 2023. Exceptions may be possible. Program length & work quota: The program is intended to last for eight weeks in a full-time capacity. Exceptions, including part-time work, may be possible. Location: We prefer summer research fellows to work from our London offices, but will also consider applications from people who are unable to relocate. Compensation: Unfortunately, we face a lot of funding uncertainty at the moment. So we don't know yet how much we will be able to pay participating fellows. Compensation will range from £1,800 to £4,000 per month, de...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Announcing the ERA Cambridge Summer Research Fellowship, published by Nandini Shiralkar on March 16, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. The Existential Risk Alliance (ERA) has opened applications for an in-person, paid, 8-week Summer Research Fellowship focused on existential risk mitigation, taking place from July 3rd to August 25th 2023 in Cambridge, UK, and aimed at all aspiring researchers, including undergraduates. To apply and find out more, please visit the ERA website. If you are interested in mentoring fellows on this programme, please submit your name, email and research area here, and we will get in touch with you in due course. If you know other people who would be a good fit, please encourage them to apply (people are more likely to apply if you recommend they do, even if they have already heard of the opportunity!) If you are a leader or organiser of relevant community spaces, we encourage you to post an announcement with a link to this post, or alternatively a printable poster is here. Applications will be reviewed as they are submitted, and we encourage early applications, as offers will be sent out as soon as suitable candidates are found. We will accept applications until April 5, 2023 (23:59 in US Eastern Daylight Time). The ERA Cambridge Fellowship (previously known as the CERI Fellowship) is a fantastic opportunity to: Build your portfolio by researching a topic relevant to understanding and mitigating existential risks to human civilisation. Receive guidance and develop your research skills, via weekly mentorship from a researcher in the field. Form lasting connections with other fellows who care about mitigating existential risks, while also engaging with local events including discussions and Q&As with experts. Why we are running this programme Our mission as an organisation is to reduce the probability of an existential catastrophe. We believe that one of the key ways to reduce existential risk lies in fostering a community of dedicated and knowledgeable x-risk researchers. Through our summer research fellowship programme, we aim to identify and support aspiring researchers in this field, providing them with the resources and the mentorship needed to succeed. What we provide A salary equivalent to £31,200 per year, which will be prorated to the duration of the summer programme. Mentorship from a researcher working in a related field. Complimentary accommodation, meal provisions during working hours, and travel expense coverage Dedicated desk space at our office in central Cambridge. Opportunity to work either on a group research project with other fellows or individually. Networking and learning opportunities through various events, including trips to Oxford and London. What we are looking for We are excited to support a wide range of research, from the purely technical to the philosophical, as long as there is direct relevance to mitigating existential risk. This could also include social science or policy projects focusing on implementing existential risk mitigation strategies. Incredibly successful projects would slightly reduce the likelihood that human civilisation will permanently collapse, that humans will go extinct, or that the future potential of humanity will be permanently reduced. A secondary goal of this project is for fellows to learn more about working on existential risk mitigation, develop relevant skills, and test their fit for further research or work in this field. Who we are looking for Anyone can apply to the fellowship, though we expect it to be most useful to students (from undergraduates to postgraduates) and early-career individuals looking to test their fit for existential risk research. We particularly encourage undergraduates to apply, to develop their research experience. We are looking to support proactive i...

Dallas talks with Megan about high-rise legal architecture make vertical urban growth possible, but do we really understand the social implications of restructuring city land ownership in this way? Geographer and architect Megan Nethercote enters the condo tower to explore the hidden social and territorial dynamics of private vertical communities. Informed by residents' accounts of Australian high-rise living, this book shows how legal and physical architectures fuse in ways that jeopardize residents' experience of home and stigmatize renters. As cities sprawl skywards and private renting expands, this compelling geographic analysis of property identifies high-rise development's overlooked hand in social segregation and urban fragmentation, and raises bold questions about the condominium's prospects. Author Dr Megan Nethercote is an ARC DECRA Fellow and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Urban Research.
