Send us a Text Message. The River Arkansas initially formed when frontman Mike Clark (guitar, banjo, and singer-songwriter) and Macon Terry (bass) met as members of other bands in 2014, and realized soon after that they both lived in Colorado Springs. Clark and Terry ended up performing in the studio together and releasing the band's debut album, Golden Light.Terry then brought players from his own band Clouds and Mountains, Robin Chestnut (drums) and Rachel Sliker (violin), and toured the West Coast for a month before releasing the second River Arkansas album, You Animal. They've since released a third album, Any Kind of Weather, and three EPs, “Damn Good Dog,” “Waiting on the Rain,” and “Green Bridge”.Before Clark became a musician, he started as a semi-professional trials bike rider, taking his first big road trip across the West Coast at the age of 27 with a friend of his to ride their bikes and meet other riders to compete with. Clark's friend, Patrick, would play his guitar many times throughout the trip (Clark didn't know he had a guitar before this trip), and Patrick's playing inspired Clark enough that he bought a harmonica during a stop at a Seattle music shop. He practiced during the rest of the trip, and that was his first venture into music.Jack Cloonan's grandfather and father played accordion, and his father also played tenor banjo. Cloonan started playing accordion at seven years old and violin at nine, focusing on traditional Irish jigs. Around the age of fourteen, he picked up a guitar and started playing more contemporary rock tunes, such as those by Led Zeppelin. He picked up a mandolin for the first time during high school, and eventually, he found bands such as Leftover Salmon and String Cheese Incident, who took Irish tunes and fused them with American stylings. At around nineteen, he started writing his own songs, with some of his guitar influences including Doc Watson, Clarence White, Tony Rice, Larry Keel, and Jake Workman.Cloonan has also been able to spend time with banjo influence Andy Thorn from Leftover Salmon, as well as perform many times with Silas Herman, son of Vince Herman, founding member of the iconic band. Silas Herman, while also performing many times with his dad, has performed in dozens of music festivals and has shared the stage and recorded with groups and individuals such as Drunken Hearts, Terrapin Family Band with Peter Rowan, Sam Bush, Chris Thile of Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers, and The Kitchen Dwellers (just within the last couple of months). A story is never one story. A story is several stories. It's the story imagined by its author or authors, as is often the case in comics, and it's the story imagined by its many readers. They can be similar or significantly different, but none of them are the same. Never have we been more aware of this phenomenon than when we were talking to Becky Cloonan and Tula Lotay about their new comic, Somna. The DSTLRY series gripped us immediately. One issue in, we found ourselves challenged, wrestling with how these witch trial stories typically propel themselves. Fear and hate are the enemy, but what happens when the paranoia is justified? Both of us interpreted the story differently, but our interpretations differed slightly from Becky Cloonan's headcanon, and hers differed slightly from Tula Lotay's headcanon. Fascinating. We can agree on Somna's plot. Ingrid is unhappily wed to the town bailiff, who succeeds by sniffing out witches and bringing them to a cleansing fire. His work consumes him, drying his desire for Ingrid and leaving her open to shadowy whispers from a potentially demonic phantom. Becky Cloonan and Tula Lotay trade pages throughout, setting barriers between dream and reality before breaking them down in tremendous fashion. Somna's third and final issue arrives in shops today. It's the culmination of a decade-long journey for Cloonan and Lotay, and they're eager to share their inspirations, interpretations, and intentions with us. Our conversation is spoiler-ish -- we HAD to talk about that last panel, so it's best if you're caught up on the series before diving into our episode. To continue this discussion, you can find Becky Cloonan on Twitter and Instagram, and Tula Lotay on Twitter and Instagram. For anyone in the marketing and advertising industry, Hubspot is a household name. But can you name all the different tools and components it has for business owners to utilize? In today's episode of the MORE podcast, Ricardo is joined by the founder of Audacity Marketing, John Cloonan, to discuss how anyone can use Hubspot's technology and tools. Many people aren't using Hubspot to its fullest potential. Hubspot is perhaps best known for its CRM platform. But Hubspot also has a marketing automation suite, a sales suite, and many other components like a platform for building websites and landing pages. Hubspot is great for small to medium companies because it has a great starting program for new businesses to get the technology for a significantly reduced cost. This creates an easy point of entry to grow and scale with the tool itself. But how is Hubspot different from the competition? The cost of entry is significantly less expensive. Hubspot has multiple integration opportunities not only internally but also externally with other tools. John is big on event marketing, so he's used Hubspot integration with Eventbrite, Zoom, and other event platforms, but it also offers integration with many major tools small businesses might need. As a business owner, what could you do with it? Get the free component, the CRM, set up with your information and data. Once you understand the system, determine what you want to get out of the platform and customize your account to accomplish those goals best. Is it traditional email marketing? Add their robust suite with a drag and drop editor. Hubspot has a freemium model so that you can start small with little cost but scale as your business grows. This lets you focus on the areas your particular business needs the most. But understand differentiation and targeting: not every product is for every person. You have to understand who you're targeting to get the most from your marketing programs. But if you have a differentiated product, you'll be in some kind of niche. John's final advice? Persistence, commitment, and differentiation are the skills he credits with getting him where he is today. Those traits are what led to his success, and they're skills he believes everyone should have. Yes, I’m totally geeking out about the series based on the 80’s sensation that was The Karate Kid. Both Danny and Johnny are back in this series that takes place many decades later. While the characters might be the same, the story is not. In fact, there is no clear villain or hero in the first season, unless you count the characters’ own inner demons. It’s a redemption story, a comedy, a drama. It’s got everything. Including nostalgia dripping from every episode. Both season now on Netflix.Jeremy - We’re going old school and revisiting some early 2000’s science fiction. A troika of comics addicts from New Hampshire are transported to an alternate Earth where their schedules permit long rambling conversation on comics, mythology, philosophy and the occult. In this episode Becky is launching Gotham Academy, Michael recalls a Batman stripper and Winston struggles with technology (apologies for quality, better days ahead.)
Producer Joe joins Jimmy to intro/outro this great lunch interview Jimmy did at The Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF) with Becky Cloonan (By Chance or Providence, Batman) and Renee Nault (Witchling). What started as just a quick recap of the show turned into a great conversation about self publishing, advice for tabling at a convention, upcoming work and more! Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love! Thanks for listening! Tune in Sunday for another special podcast! It's the spotlight panel that Jimmy moderated with German cartoonist Reinhard Kleist (The Boxer, Cash: I See A Darkness). He's a talented, smart and funny man with a great career. Hear them discuss it all! Then come back next week for even more TCAF interviews with Jesse Lonergan (All Star), Eric Kim (Nitro Battlers), Box Brown (Andre the Giant), Lianne Sentar/Rebecca Scoble (Sparkler Monthly) and the Sports vs Comics panel that Jimmy moderated.
James Sime runs The Isotope Lounge, voted Best Comic Shop in San Francisco by the SF Bay Guardian for the last 11 years. He has a suit for every occasion (including under-the-hood auto maintenance) and, when combined with his distinctive electroshock pompadour, cuts the figure of a man engaged in the serious business of being the coolest dude in the room. Little Green Bag by the George Baker Selection has been known to start playing out of nowhere as James walks down a hallway. He once enrolled in and dropped out of a college simply to get the ID card so he could apply for a checking account. His early support and patronage helped give a boost to some of today's most successful comic creators, such as Robert Kirkman, Ed Brubaker, and Brian Wood, but he also packs just as much enthusiam into racking mini-comics on his shelves from creators as young as 7 years old. No one gets carded at the Isotope Lounge, because what they have on tap is comics for all ages, genders, and tastes. Greg went on location to talk to James, the Comic Pimp, in his element. The conversation covered the nature of 'cool', James' holistic approach to marrying brick & mortar retailing with digital sales, taking MorrisonCon from idea to once-in-a-lifetime event, reading his customers minds, and what surprises a guy who's been selling comics for over 13 years. Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. You can subscribe to it via iTunes or through the RSS feed at RobotsFromTomorrow.com. You can also follow Mike and Greg on Twitter. Music is Little Green Bag by the George Baker Selection. Enjoy your funny books.
Multiversity's David Harper hosts a conversation with creators Becky Cloonan (The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, Demeter) and Sean Murphy (The Wake, Punk Rock Jesus) to talk about all things comic art, the difference between being a writer/artist and an artist, where artists are at today in comics, and more.
Reviews: Age of Ultron #10AI, Batman/Superman #1, Lazarus, Uncanny #1 Jimmy flies solo again due to time constraints and briefly chats about his SDCC press woes being solved, attending his friend Kim Boekbinder's album release party and trying to get Suicide Girl Soya on the podcast while at SDCC. News includes: DC Comics Vertigo imprint is bringing 6 new titles this fall, Comixology offers subscriptions and bundles and Starz announces 2 new series in Outlander and Black Sails. And, it's the third and final of three panels that Jimmy moderated at Heroes Con a few weeks ago. This one dealt with going from indie comics to mainstream and back. It featured Becky Cloonan, Kelly Sue DeConnick and Robbi Rodriguez. Jimmy was a bit under the weather so isn't his normal chatty moderating self. Thankfully, he had smart, entertaining and talkative panelists! Great discussion about how they got started and where they are now. Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love! Thanks for listening!
This week the Two Guys with PhDs review Gabrielle Bell's latest book, The Voyeurs (Uncivilized Books), as well as two self-published comics from Becky Cloonan, The Mire and Demeter. This is the perfect episode to follow last week's roundtable on the mainstream-indie comics divide, in that the work of both Bell and Cloonan exemplify many of the points raised in that discussion. First, Andy and Derek do an in-depth reading of The Voyeurs, placing it within the larger context of Bell's body of work. They emphasize the semi-autobiographic nature of the book, while at the same time pointing out how much of The Voyeurs is more ambitious than her earlier comics, combining many of the best features found in her Lucky series (collected in 2003) and the more fictional Cecil and Jordan in New York (2008). The guys then move on to Becky Cloonan's recent self-published comics, The Mire (a 2013 Eisner Award nominee) and Demeter. After briefly discussing some of Cloonan's mainstream work, such as American Virgin (with Steven T. Seagle, 2006-2008) and Demo (with Brian Wood, 2003 and 2010), Andy and Derek move quickly into the independently published comics, highlighting many of the features that set these titles apart from her mainstream work. They specifically focus on the poetic quality of both The Mire and Demeter, seeing these comics as sophisticated and almost elusive narratives that challenge the reader in significant ways.
It's a special DINTERVIEW episode! That's Dinner + Interview = DINTERVIEW! (Thanks to Becky Cloonan for that.) You guessed it, it's another podcast dinner where Jimmy sits down with some cartoonists over dinner to talk comics. While in Toronto for TCAF, Jimmy was joined by Paul Pope, Becky Cloonan, Glyn Dillon, and Monica Gallagher. They discussed the ins and outs of comics from what they use to draw, the process of cartooning, their approach to the medium, digital vs. print, inspirations, influences and so much more! They even all got a bit silly at times and there may even be some singing and about 5 attempts to end the podcast. It's a bit lengthy as they were having such a grand time. Jimmy turned on the recorder and let it go for 2 hours! Not only do you hear the cartoonists, you'll hear the background noise, the waiter taking our orders, our food arriving, clinking of our silverware, etc. So sit back and be a fly on the wall for an exciting, informative and fun 2 hours of comic goodness with some of the best in the business! Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love! Thanks for listening!
Jimmy moderated Becky Cloonan's Spotlight panel at Comic Con on Thursday. He went to L.A. for a few days after and Live Prude Girls, Stevie Nelson and Milana Vayntrub (Jimmy hearts them muchly), joined him in the west coast studio. In the panel, Becky and Jimmy discuss her extensive career and her love of self publishing. It's a great class on comics making so listen in! Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love! Come back on Saturday to hear all of the roundtables from The Walking Dead!
Join Jimmy and Kevin Conn on the Comic News Insider Night Watch radio hour as they introduce the charming podcast dinner from Boston Comic Con. Jimmy hosted a laid back dinner at Sonsie restaurant in Boston with Jeremy Bastian, Andy Belanger, Becky Cloonan, and Ming Doyle. They chatted about the state of the comic book industry, indie vs mainstream, art styles, photo reference, digital comics and more. Jimmy also ended the dinner with a very Bernard Pivot style questionairre for everyone. Come and listen and you'll feel like you are dining with us! It's informative, atmospheric and just plain fun. Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love!
