Il caso Almasri, dall'arresto all'espulsione in Libia.
Cioran is notorious as the depressive philosopher par excellence. While figures such as Schopenhauer, Ligotti and Benatar have advanced logical arguments for their pessimistic outlook, Cioran's work is completely missing any such justification for his depressive feeling for life. Instead, his work is a lyrical outpouring of his inner life. In this episode we're taking a look at his first and most infamous book, "On the Heights of Despair", written during a bout of insomnia. As his translator, Zarifopol-Johnston argues, the book was an attempt to preserve Cioran's real self by "killing" a literary version of himself. We explore this interpretation of Cioran's work: that it is a means of coping with the madness and sorrow he finds within himself, through lyricism. Ironically, a text that was rumored to have caused many suicides may have preserved Cioran's life.
En esta sesión hablamos de Teatro Grottesco, obra de Thomas Ligotti, maestro del absurdo, la alienación y la desesperanza, acompáñenos porque la cosa se pone muy cotorra.
ASMR soft spoken reading of Gas Station Carnivals by Thomas Ligotti. A rolling rainstorm on a tin roof ambience has been added to help you relax. Listen with headphones for the best experience. Gas Station Carnivals by Thomas Ligotti dives deep into a surreal nightmare that transforms an ordinary stop into an eerie, otherworldly experience. The protagonist stumbles upon a desolate gas station in the middle of nowhere, only to discover it hosts a strange, decrepit carnival. The attractions are grotesque and sinister, with a carousel of broken, lifeless horses and sideshow performers that seem to have stepped out of dark dreams. The atmosphere is thick with dread as the protagonist explores this eerie spectacle, feeling a growing sense of unease and impending doom. As the night unfolds, the boundaries between reality and nightmare blur, leading to a climax where the protagonist's sanity is tested against the unfathomable horrors that lurk in the shadows of the carnival. Ligotti masterfully crafts a chilling, immersive tale that leaves readers questioning the nature of reality and the darkness that hides within the mundane. If you're a fan of psychological horror with a touch of the surreal, Gas Station Carnivals offers a haunting journey you won't soon forget. Chapter 1:Summary of The Conspiracy against the Human RaceThe Conspiracy against the Human Race by Thomas Ligotti is a philosophical treatise that delves into existential themes, exploring the nature of consciousness, the human experience, and the concept of “anti-natalism.” Ligotti presents a bleak perspective on life, arguing that existence is inherently painful and filled with suffering. The book intertwines philosophy, horror, and Ligotti's unique brand of dark aesthetics. He examines various philosophical traditions, particularly those that question the value of human life, and delves into the irrationality of existence. Ligotti posits that consciousness, rather than being a gift, is a curse that leads to awareness of life's inherent suffering and futility.Throughout the work, Ligotti draws parallels between philosophical ideas and horror literature, suggesting that horror reflects deeper truths about existence. He feels that the horror genre can effectively encapsulate the dread and absurdity that he perceives in the human condition.Central to his argument is the idea that human beings are ensnared in a "conspiracy" of existence, where life itself is an adversary—encouraging suffering and disillusionment. He advocates for a reconsideration of procreation and suggests an anti-natalist stance, arguing that it might be more compassionate to refrain from bringing new life into a world filled with suffering.Overall, The Conspiracy against the Human Race is a contemplative yet unsettling examination of existence, suffering, and the philosophical implications of consciousness, framed within Ligotti's distinctive horror-infused worldview.Chapter 2:The Theme of The Conspiracy against the Human Race"The Conspiracy Against the Human Race" by Thomas Ligotti is not a work of fiction but rather a philosophical treatise that delves into themes of horror, pessimism, and the nature of existence. Here are some key plot points, character development, and thematic ideas related to the book: Key Plot Points1. Philosophical Discourse: The book presents a series of essays and reflections rather than a traditional narrative, analyzing the nature of consciousness and existence.2. The Horror of Awareness: Ligotti discusses the idea that human consciousness is a curse, highlighting the pain of self-awareness and the burden of existence.3. Anti-natalism: A key argument in the book is anti-natalism—the belief that coming into existence is a harm and that it would be better if humans did not exist at all.4. Comparison with Existentialism: Ligotti positions his views against existentialism, suggesting that rather than seeking meaning, one should confront the inherent meaninglessness of life.5. Cultural Perspectives: He explores various philosophical traditions and their perspectives on existence, death, and the nature of reality, providing a broad intellectual foundation for his assertions. Character DevelopmentSince "The Conspiracy Against the Human Race" does not feature characters as found in narrative literature, character development is not applicable. Instead, the work can be seen as a dialogue between Ligotti's philosophical voice and the reader. Thematic Ideas1. Existential Nihilism: Ligotti's work delves deep into nihilism and existential dread, exploring the implications of a universe devoid of inherent meaning or purpose.2. Fear of Consciousness: One of the central themes is the fear and horror associated with human consciousness and the capacity for self-reflection, which contributes to existential anxiety.3. Critique of Humanism: Ligotti presents a critique of humanism, arguing that human endeavors often lead to suffering and despair rather than progress or enhancement of existence.4. The Nature of Reality: The distinction between reality and...

Friends of WorkFitME Mobile Physical Therapy Partner Brian Ligotti of Dirigo Fitness has an inspiring story and has used that to help countless people begin their own inspiring health, wellness, and fitness journey. Here's a little bit about Brian's story that led him to start Dirigo Fitness: I started Dirigo Fitness because I had struggled with my weight for many years of my life. I knew I needed to do something to help others overcome the despair I felt regarding my weight. I received a degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Southern Maine and I have applied what I learned in school to Dirigo Fitness with these following principles:The only way to create lasting change is to stay focused, have a clear reason for what I am doing, and be consistent with small changes. Fitness allowed me to find the piece of myself that could face anything and push through discomfort. It showed me that there is nothing more important than my health and that the people around me benefit the most when I'm taking care of “me.” I spent most of my life addicted to one thing or another; First food, then drugs, then food again. I was never really comfortable in my own skin and I decided I didn't want anyone else to live with that feeling of hopelessness.Find Dirigo Fitness online:dirigofitness.com@dirigofitness on all social media platformsWelcome of the Strength For Your Purpose Podcast where Dr. Phil Finemore, PT, DPT, Cert.
We've got a bit of a special episode for you this time, as HJ Doom has been joined by literary horror enthusiast Kit Rathenar for a longform discussion about the seminal horror writer Thomas Ligotti, taking a closer look at a selection of his short stories in the context of his oeuvre as a whole. It was recorded straight off the internet voice call so the sound quality is a bit variable, with some background noise we couldn't completely excise, but I think you'll agree that the content more than makes up for it. And I (Richard deValmont) can say that, as I am not in this one. Which is probably why it's so good.

Happy Halloween everyone! We are once again joined by the spectacular Horror Vanguard to talk about an incredible work, Thomas Ligotti's 2002 novella (and two short stories) form My Work is Not Yet Done! We face corporate horror, how capitalism drains away all that makes us human and good, and what both is and means standing against this Ichor of Darkness. It is a great and fascinating conversation as we both chat endlessly about how corporations and office jobs are demeaning and awful, but still find time to laugh and smile all the same. Once again, a powerful collab, by the best horror podcast about communism and best communist podcast about horror out there! Check out the Horror Vanguard! When not one, but two 8th century mass graves emerged on the beaches of Salme in Saaremaa, Estonia, it marked a new chapter in scholarly inquiry into the Viking Era. Thoughtfully propped up in two military rowing vessels, sitting side by side, and stacked on top of each other, respectively, these 40 or so Scandinavian raiders received graves as shallow as they were ritualistic. The finds brought renewed interest in the historical origins of viking piracy. A culture that came of age with the professionalization of the Germanic warband in the Roman Iron Age, which led to the emergence of a self-insistent aristocratic class, who built their identity around war, feasting, and huge halls. But their primitive adolescence goes even further back, to a dim past of steppe raiding-economies, and eerie coming of age rituals. And yet, one may discern the glimmer of an influence not quite of this world, of a new religion with the promise of a shimmering afterlife in the presence of the Lord. In this episode, Brute Norse attempts to trace the idea of Valhalla, from the darkest of pasts, to the light in the end of the tunnel. Hail Herjan! Hail Wodanaz! True Detective very much helped to popularize the view of pessimism as tenable philosophical ground to the national television-viewing audience. The story of Rust Cohle is one of bleak reality almost too real to bear. Thomas Ligotti, likewise, broadcast his own philosophical pessimism to horror-savvy readers with his book “The Conspiracy Against The Human Race”. In this episode I discuss both popular accounts of pessimism and my own experience and investigations into the abyss. It's impossible to mention the philosophy of Ligotti without mentioning his predecessor, H.P. Lovecraft, and his incomprehensible creations like Cthulhu. Perhaps the reality of existence truly is too much. Then again, the philosophy of Buddhism accepts much the same premises as philosophical pessimism, but comes to radically different conclusions. Maybe the answer is to strive in the face of suffering per Dr. Jordan Peterson and Dr. Viktor Frankl. As always, I leave the answers up to you to figure out. Let me know what you come up with. We are back with our first full episode of Horror Month, and equally proud to present the FIRST podcast episode dedicated to the writer Thomas Ligotti (on iTunes and Stitcher at least). Jake reads a passage from one of our favorite stories, which launches us into a discussion on Ligotti's technique and vision; two things that are intricately linked to his philosophy of Pessimism. Our discussion includes stories from "Grimscribe: His Lives and Works," "Songs of a Dead Dreamer," "Teatro Grottesco," and his non-fictional work "The Conspiracy Against the Human Race."
In this special Aside for Horror month, Alex and Jake discuss Thomas LIgotti, H.P. Lovecraft and the weird history of the American Novel. They also preview the upcoming episodes on Thomas Ligotti (Songs of a Dead Dreamer/Grimscribe) and H.P. Lovecraft (At the Mountains of Madness). Finally, they ask for listener input on what short stories to read for the Halloween episode.
