John Paradine was there on Day One of Red Bull, when the first can was officially sold in the USA. In this podcast, he shares stories about the way Red Bull established themselves in the USA - and the unorthodox ways they went about building the marketing organization (and their approach to ROI). Field Marketing was (and still is) a huge element in Red Bull's marketing mix, and on this podcast we share the insights of how anyone (brand, operator or creator) could utilize that mindset to be successful. A great catch up with Eric Sterman, running us through his local downwind runs, how it differs in different conditions and his progressions based on using different equipment. Eric was first exposed to foiling when working on the film crew for Robby Naish's Longest Wave Movie. This was early days and he has been through a lot of progression and learning since then.He shares some advice on equipment and how gear will work for some people but not for others. The trick is trying a bunch of gear and seeing what clicks for you. We get into the downwind runs Eric learnt on and he gives some really good insight on different spots to chip in for the Turtle Bay Run and a few tips on angles to run as you go down the coastline. Was awesome to get a comparison on the North Shore Downwind Runs to the South Shore Downwind Runs on Oahu and how both compare to the Gorge. All in all was a fun and chat, take some time out and enjoy this fortnight's Catch Up.If you'd like to learn how to downwind foil I'd love to hear from you and help you undertake your journey. This episode is a re-broadcast and was originally recorded way back in 2015. We're making some major changes here at SUPfm and before we come back with the second half of Season Three we're taking you all the way back to our first season, where Nick got to chat to the ever impressive Kai Lenny. Kai is a down to earth guy despite growing up at the centre of the surfing world at his home in Hawaii. All the greats, Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama and Robby Naish would stop by his house on a Friday for a barbecue with his dad. One day (when he was 16 years old) they invited him to foil surf at Jaws. He's paddled Molokai many times, won stand up paddle world titles and surfed Jaws when it's huge. He is right up there with the best, at whatever water sport he is taking part in. Kai talks about his training, his mentors and the attention given to his confrontation with Connor Baxter at the much missed Battle of The Paddle event 2014 The wonderful thing about talking with Kai Lenny is that he is clearly grateful for what he has achieved and is proud to share the love of his sport with whoever he meets. It's also great to see him taking time out to meet and inspire the local kids wherever he paddles. Kai Lenny has created the Positively Kai Foundation which promotes ocean safety and youth development education. It's a great commitment to the community with an objective to set up training clinics to introduce kids to water sports wherever they are. The chat ended early due to some Skype problems, but we hope you'll enjoy listening to one of the sport's top talents, because we really enjoyed talking to him. We talked briefly about his time surfing Jaws. This video takes you with him as he glides down the face of one of the world's most powerful forces. Support this podcast

Kai Lenny is a 24-year-old superstar in nearly every water sport you could name. He’s a seven-time stand-up paddle-boarding (SUP) world champion, two-time kitesurfing world champion, and a multi-award-winning big wave surfer, tow-in surfer, windsurfer, and hydrofoiler. As Kai and Andy talk at length today, you’ll learn more than the mere distinctions between each water sport, but the mental challenges and style integral to a world champion’s success. Growing up in Maui, Hawaii, with parents who shared his adoration for both the water and athleticism, Kai and his younger brother found themselves at the beach as often as possible. Kai’s lifelong obsession with the ocean has come to the point where, no matter where he travels in the world, he finds a way to surf in some fashion—even if that means finding rapids to ride in Montana. As Kai’s technical skills came to match his passion, he’s practiced the “silent art” of separating himself from a crowd and bringing his individual take to the water. With critical surfing mentors like Kelly Slater and Robby Naish playing a significant role in his life, Kai has learned to thrive on pressure and find a level-headed calm in even the most thrilling moments of his career. In his conversation with Andy today, Kai reveals why each water sport he pursues is far more of a lifestyle and purpose-driven endeavor than it is a traditional sport, and the reasons why he could never train and perform at his expert level without his avid team of sponsors, supporters, mentors and family members alongside him. All the greats, Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama and Robby Naish would stop by his house on a Friday for a barbecue with his dad. One day (when he was 16 years old) they invited him to foil surf at Jaws. He's paddled Molokai seven times, won three stand up paddle world titles, surfed Jaws when it's huge. He is right up there with the best, at whatever water sport he is taking part in. Kai talks about his training, his mentors and the attention given to his confrontation with Connor Baxter at the BOP 2014 The wonderful thing about talking with Kai Lenny is that he is clearly grateful for what he has achieved and is proud to share the love of his sport with whoever he meets.
