POPULARITY
World Population Day has passed but its legacy continues! In part B of our world population day special, PGAP travels (virtually) to the USA to speak with Dave Gardner from World Population Balance and to Portugal to talk with population sustainability academic João Abegão. We are also serenaded by the song 'Let's Hang Out' by child-free comedian Jude Perl. Dave Gardner speaks with Michael about World Population Balance (https://www.worldpopulationbalance.org/)'s excellent campaigns during 2020 that encourage and empower people to choose smaller families. Also discussed was the launch of the World OVERpopulation Day website (http://www.worldpopulationday.org/), GrowthBusters (https://www.growthbusters.org/) and Dave's great work on The Overpopulation Podcast (https://www.worldpopulationbalance.org/podcasts). João Abegão discusses the background behind the making of the Overpopulation Atlas (https://www.overpopulationatlas.com/) - this is perhaps one of the most spectacular and dedicated post-grad projects ever! As one of the youngest advocates for population sustainability on, João has also addressed the UN as part of a panel discussion on population at the COP25 in Madrid. 2019. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPMy2Yw8teM), which is very impressive. In between interviews, we play a live performance of 'Let's Hang Out' from comedian, musician and thought provoker Jude Perl (https://judeperl.bandcamp.com/). Jude performed live as part of SPA's Tough Crowd series with Australian comedian and national treasure Rod Quantock (see here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R89PDvdy65Q)). The song's clever message is very relevant to world population day - it will all make sense by the chorus! Special Guests: Dave Gardner and João Abegão.

Interview 1 - Hung Le and Rod Quantock Stella brings in the maiden interview of the 'Funny about books' podcast live at the Newport Comedy Room with special guests and legendary comics - Rod Quantock and Hung Le. Rod proudly confesses to having never written for his stand up routines, but Hung admits to aiming for a cracking punch line every three sentences! In a conversation taking more twists and turns than a federal politician watering with a cheap garden hose, the group discusses whether comics are made or born, the delights of the classics and how much fun it is to 'peel the tape off' racial and political stereotypes. "It really helps if you look funny…" reflects Hung about physical comedy, to which Rod quips: "You lucky bastard!" Don't forget to check out the Stellavision website for forthcoming shows. Rod Quantock recently received a Medal of the Order of Australia for his 45+ years of being an outspoken comedian/environmentalist activist/shit-stirrer. He is a living legend of Australian comedy who has relentlessly used his work to explain, dissect and call out political issues that really piss him off. In this wide-ranging chat, Rod told me about his thoughts on music, his political radicalisation, the origins of his groundbreaking shows Tram and Bus, the community campaigns he’s been involved with, being physically beaten at a protest at the 2000 World Economic Forum, his plans to close down the Murdoch press, how he keeps faith in the political system (or doesn’t) and how the realities of climate change colour his view of the future.
