On August 1, 2002, two 16-year-old and 17-year-old young women, total strangers, are each parked with male companions up near a popular lovers' lane in Quartz Hill, California. Suddenly, their night is interrupted when the girls are kidnapped by a felon on the run in need of a getaway vehicle. For the next 12 hours, the girls endure a terrifying ordeal, as finding them safe and well becomes a race against time. But with law enforcement on the trail of the highly publicised kidnapping, it's only a matter of time before the net closes in on the perpetrator. However, the sensational coverage of the case doesn't end there. Rick Ellis is the 7th black belt under Roy Dean. His jiu-jitsu journey started when he was 41 years old in an old Taekwondo dojo where the mats were never cleaned. Rick joined Roy Dean's academy after the doors first opened. He fell in love with Mr. Dean's coaching style, personality, and the art of jiu-jitsu. Rick always knew he was going to be a black belt. His original goal was to receive his black belt by the time he turned 50, but unfortunately, injuries and moving around cause the process to take a little longer. When talking to Rick, you can tell he is a very analytical thinker. Each time he answers a question, there is a pause as if he is trying to solve an algebraic equation with no scratch paper. It is honestly refreshing talking with a person who sits and thinks about each word before answering. You truly get a sense of authenticity and genuine desire to ensure the answer is exactly what he wants to say, no fluff. Rick is an inspiration to all those practitioners who maybe started late in life, battled a few injuries, and even thought about quitting. Today's interview is with the incredible Roy Dean. Professor Roy Dean is a third-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, under Professor Roy Harris, and Seibukan Jujutsu, with additional black belts in Kodokan Judo and Aikikai Aikido. He is the author of two books Becoming the Black Belt A BJJ Journey and The Martial Apprentice: A Japanese Jujutsu Adventure, which are both must-reads for any martial artist. Mr. Roy Dean started his martial arts journey as a 16-year-old boy living in Japan as a foreign exchange student. He was told that he needed to pick up a traditional Japanese hobby and decided to pursue Kodokan Judo. From there he fell in love with multiple martial arts. Ultimately he found BJJ in his early 20's and was hooked. Mr. Roy Dean is probably most known for his high-quality video content on his YouTube page and his RoyDean.tv. He looks to be a storyteller with all of his content instead of just being a talking head with technique. His belt demonstration starts off with a beautiful symphony of technical knowledge into rounds of sparing starting with lower belts as the tester slowly works up the ladder of difficulty until they finally reach Mr. Dean himself for their final test before earning their new rank. Even with what fame and acknowledgment he has earned around the world, Mr. Dean is extremely humble and wants to give as much as he can back to the Jiu-Jitsu community as possible. His wealth of knowledge, humility, personality, and content search for improvement flows from him with every question answered. We can not thank Mr. Roy Dean enough for giving us his time and the opportunity to pick his brain about a variety of topics. We hope you gain as much out of this interview as we did. Today's special guest is my friend Roy Dean. You may know Roy from his Brazilian jiu-jitsu DVD's, online courses, YouTube videos, or books. Roy and I tried to connect for another ordinary podcast interview, but technology squashed our attempts and we ended up chatting for an hour anyway. This was serendipitous as we ended up on topics with the makings of a great podcast. Things often not talked about by black belt instructors in the martial arts. We linked up a week later and recorded this intriguing discussion for all of you. Join me today, as I welcome Roy Dean and we take you on a journey inside the minds of black belts.

The boys talk about Paulie becoming a purple belt over the weekend. They get into what he did to test and how he performed. Now Paulie is “just a purple belt”. Roy Dean wrote an article about what it means to become a purple belt. He explains the difference between a baby blue belt and just how different a purple belt rolls from that milestone. We break down what he says and Paulie gives his thoughts and opinions about what is being construed in the article. Since it took over ten years for Paulie to get his purple belt, he has some interesting insights of his journey along the way. Basically at the end he suggests that if he can do it, so can you. It sounds cliche, but it is what it is. Don’t pigeonhole yourself into whatever rank you’re currently at. Push yourself to see just how far you can go. You’ll be proud that you did.

Last week I drove down to Los Angeles for New Japan Pro Wrestling's first US based event . Whether you love or hate pro wrestling the level of entertainment you get from Japanese wrestling is insane. The fans are crazy about it and for good reason. The stuff these guys are able to do it a wrestling ring is insane. Since it's Japanese based there's more of a “shoot style” kind of mma influence in a lot of the stuff they do ( when they're not bouncing off the roof flying and stuff lol ) !     Anyway! From there I drove down to Palm Springs to hang out with Roy Dean and record some content for our channels. We did a 2 hour podcast which is linked on this post. His videos and teaching style are something I've really appreciated about Roy for a long time. We have been in contact online for quite some time but actually spending time him was pretty cool. He went out of his way to be accommodating and actually taught me a lot of stuff about video editing I just didn't know. I've always really liked the way he produces his videos. I remember buying his “blue belt requirements” dvd set 10 years ago or something crazy like that since back then a blue belt was this whole huge deal. ( Belt promotions tended to be few and far between back then at least where I trained and no one really knew what it took ).   I'm back in Las Vegas since Friday now ( I spent a few days at home back in Sunnyvale ( near San Jose, CA ) but had to come out for international fight week. I went to the TUF finale with some friends ( actually got hooked up with some sweet box seats at the T-Mobile arena which was pretty amazing. I'm probably going to head back to Robert Drysdale's place and get some training in before heading back to California. I've got some shows coming up later in the month I'm extremely stoked about.   Most people in the Jiu Jitsu scene know Roy Dean for his videos. He's a 3rd degree black belt under Roy Harris and his game is very slick. He's very deliberate and well spoken in his instructional tapes and one I definitely recommend for people who want to come in and drill useful techniques with their friends. While belt requirements from gym to gym are absolutely not standardized the techniques that were shown in his blue belt requirements are still things I use to this day even as a black belt. Grab that dvd for sure if you are a white belt wondering kind of “where you are” or what is generally expected. Roy is very well spoken and the production quality of his stuff is top notch.
