Henry Akins began training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in 1995 at the Rickson Gracie Acadamy on Pico blvd in West LA. Shortly after he started he became the secretary at the academy and was spending 70 hours a week there watching and participating in all of the classes. In Feb of 2004, because of his persistence and dedication to the fundamentals and philosophies of Jiu-Jitsu, Rickson Gracie presented Henry with a blackbelt, being only the third American at the time to receive that honor. Mickey Schuch is the owner and an instructor at Carry Trainer, an organization designed to provide a holistic approach to self-defense and firearms training. Mickey is a firearm instructor for Pistol, Rifle, Shotguns, Personal Protection Inside the Home and Personal Protection Outside the Home, a Range Safety Officer, and a member of the Illinois Tactical Officers Association. Carry Trainer provides real solutions for real problems. It is incumbent upon individuals, businesses, and organizations to protect and defend innocent life. Carry Training provides training for individuals who are looking to make themselves the best that they can be. There is much more to self-defense than obtaining a permit to carry a gun. Training in any martial skill is more than attending a class, it is a lifestyle choice and the decision to exercise the right of arming oneself for the defense of themselves and family should not be taken lightly. Bullets cannot be called back once loosed from the gun. Safety is not an inherent trait; it is learned through proper training and repetition. Henry Akins began training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in 1995 at the Rickson Gracie Acadamy on Pico blvd in West LA. Shortly after he started he became the secretary at the acadamy and was spending 70 hours a week there watching and participating in all of the classes. In 1997 the school moved to the Pacific Palisades where Henry trained and assisted main Instructor Luis Heredia and also participated and trained in all of the classes taught by Rickson. During these years Henry had the opportunity to train with Rickson and help him prepare for his fights in Japan. In 2000 the acadamy moved again to Wilshire blvd in West LA. By this time Henry had begun teaching many of the classes at the school. In Feb of 2004, because of his persistence and dedication to the fundamentals and philosophies of Jiu-Jitsu, Rickson Gracie presented Henry with a blackbelt, being only the third American at the time to receive that honor. Henry then took over the school and became the main instructor there until 2008 when he was forced to stop due to a back injury. Now Henry is the head Jiu-Jitsu instructor at Dynamix Martial Arts and although Henry is no longer affiliated with Rickson Gracie or his association, he feels blessed to be able to share this art with others and to pass on the knowledge that was taught to him by the greatest Jiu-Jitsu practitioner ever.

Of all of the Jiu Jitsu seminars I have been to over the last few years Henry really stood out to me. After spending the day with him in Concord, California this year I was compelled to take the trip down to Los Angeles to learn more. The way he uses weight, space and most significantly pressure efficiently made me drive nearly 400 miles to attend his classes at Dynamix, MMA off of Santa Monica blvd. I was absolutely not disappointed. I appreciate the training, the wisdom and the opportunity to have Henry on the show . Hopefully everyone enjoys the episode ! For more information on Henry check him out at and be sure to visit Dynamix MMA in Los Angeles for awesome training, a great vibe, great people and some of the best jiu jitsu instruction available anywhere, ever. BjjBrick Podcast- BJJ, Jiu-Jitsu, MMA, martial arts, no-gi and good times!
This week we have a HUGE episode. We take six well known and respected black belts and ask them all the same five questions about blue belts. There are some similarities and differences within these interviews but the amount of jiu-jitsu wisdom about blue belts in this episode is amazing. The five questions we asked to the six black belt guests Do you have requirements for a blue belt? What are they? How important is it for students to be able to "defend" their belt? How many intangibles (good teammate, good effort, helps others) come into play when promoting someone to blue belt? Do you ever regret giving someone a blue belt? What advice to you have for the new blue belt? Tim Sledd 24m 25s Tim explains some of the techniques he requires for a student to know before receiving a blue belt. Tim talks about why some students get tapped by lower belts and if it is a big deal. Why he looks at character of a student not just technique, and how this can hold someone back. Why he has no regrets of any belts he has given out. Advice for the new blue belt. Matt Thornton 58m 30s How he evaluates blue belts based on performance, and not looking at particular techniques. Why it is important for your first blue belts to be very good at a school. The importance of having good people on the mat. Why he is confident in all his blue belt students. Why it is important to relax and work on open guard as a blue belt. Bernardo Faria 1h 17m 30s Bernardo talks about Fabio Gurgel's system to get a blue belt a student must attend 120 classes. The idea of not tapping to a lower belt is an old mentality. Having a bad attitude will hold students back. Not having an actual belt test, and not regretting giving someone a blue belt. Keep your ego low, and work on learning jiu-jitsu. Daniel Covel 1h 25m 05s His minimum requirements of techniques for a blue belt. The responsibilities of the instructor to the students. The importance of learning from your mistakes, and making adjustments. Why it is important to have good people and teammates on the mat. He has no regrets about any of his past blue belts. It is important to recognise the hard work on the mats. Henry Akins 1h 42m 50s Understanding the basic positions and a handful of basic submissions. Why some upper belts get caught by lower belts. Why it is important for a blue belt to be a good training partner. Why getting tapped out is part of the learning process Why blue belts should work hard to develop a strong base. John Will 1h 59m 30s Why he likes having requirements for blue belts but not so many for other belts. It is rare for a colored belt to get tapped by a lower belt, but it is no big deal. Why the culture of the gym is so important. The concept of a ox neck and rat's head. It is often normal to feel like you don't deserve a new belt Ask five simple questions for every technique you learn to learn more details. "My focus has always been how to use Jiu-Jitsu as a martial art, as a way to instill confidence in a person... and if there is ever a confrontation they feel prepared to deal with it." "It's not about speed, a lot of people think you need to be fast.... it is about timing" "The focus for a competitor is the complete opposite from the focus of a teacher.
