Ours to Protect is a unique and exciting audio project – a collaboration of local and regional broadcasters from across the country who have come together to tackle climate change, champion climate action, and inform and educate audiences all over Ireland about how they can make a difference. Today on ‘Ours To Protect' John Morley talks to renowned environmentalist Duncan Stewart and Dr Anne Nolan, coordinator of the Masters in Education for Sustainability and Global Citizenship at Mary Immaculate College Limerick about improving access to environmentalism in the Irish education system...     Did you know… Sustainability education focuses on addressing topics and breaking down topics like biodiversity, the bioeconomy, the circular economy, the science behind climate change, transport, energy and water pollution. The Galway Youth Climate Assembly aimed to educate students on sustainability and participate in decision-making for climate action policies and to learn about processes and products made in Galway that are in line with the UN'S sustainability goals. Sustainability will become part of the Leaving Cert curriculum in 2025 through the subject ‘Climate Action and Sustainable Development.' Climate anxiety can be defined as an ongoing distress over climate events such as major flooding having a massive impact on the landscape and on human life is said to be on the rise among young people.   Why is important? Why is sustainability education so important? It allows primary and secondary school students to have an active voice in the conversation around sustainability. It can develop their problem solving, critical thinking and participation skills in making informed decisions in relation to climate action The Government are building on a national strategy for sustainability education-the National Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development will work on achieving Ireland's commitment to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. The Galway Youth Climate Assembly was launched last year as the first of its kind in the country and has inspired other local events around the country for students to discuss sustainability.   What can I do to help support sustainability education issues? Teachers can use resources on sustainblity to educate their pupils in classrooms-such as the EcoEd4all programme for Transition Year students Encouraging young people to get outside and connect with nature such as taking part in weekly local nature walks like those in Merlin Woods or cycling to school. If you need some art fuel, listen to what South African artist Duncan Stewart says about art. I recently interviewed him for my podcast; his words are still resonating in my heart. 'Art is ingrained in our deepest being. Our collective experiences, DNA, genetic makeup, and contexts have made us all wonderfully unique. In our own right, every human being is a magnificent artwork.  Art can bypass our intellect and rational thinking, and it can penetrate the soul and we can be moved. It's a language by which we can connect on a deep level.' Good stuff! Now that should silence those nagging voices telling you why you even bother getting paint on your canvas, marks on your clay, or words on your paper.  You are not just making art. What you are creating has value. Without even trying, you are expressing your uniqueness (which is amazing) and you have that incredible ability to touch hearts.  If you are looking for support & connection as a working artist then definitely join us in THRIVE. Thrive is where artists meet, learn & grow to become their creative best.

From graphic designer to working artist, Duncan Stewart walks us through his journey and shares what he's learned about living as an artist along the way. Coming from a traditional family of lawyers and bankers, Duncan never saw himself becoming an artist, even with an insatiable appetite to draw and paint. Though he studied, and later worked, as a graphic designer, he eventually gave himself the opportunity to explore the underlying desire to create. At 22 years of age, while working in an advertising firm, Duncan allowed himself to explore his artistic tendencies and attended art school in Florence.  Duncan gave himself two years to understand why the pull to art was so strong. In Florence, he found his answers. Creating art provided what he needed to build a sustainable life: personal expression, connecting with people, and financial stability. Duncan explains that working as an artist is not a straightforward path, but for him, a necessary one: “Art is a difficult journey, but it's [...] who I am.”  Without the funds for art school, Duncan had to get creative, and cycled from Johannesburg to Cape Town, gaining sponsors that allowed him to attend his first year. After running out of money, Duncan put on an exhibition with his student work and raised the funds necessary for his second year.   He explains his path has shown him who he is as a person and artist, and that being around great artists led him to challenge himself. Duncan notes, “[w]hen you go to Italy or when you choose your art school or when you choose the company you keep, I've realized that [you should] always aim as high as you can. Your own standard will then automatically be raised.” Duncan now works across all media. From painting in oil, sculpting, or fabricating works in bronze, ceramics, or stainless steel, he pulls inspiration from life's observations, and what's happening in current culture. He reveals that his art continues to shift, becoming less figurative, and more cerebral and expressive.  Duncan encourages young artists to never stop drawing. Once you know yourself as an artist, practice as an artist, and create a network along the way. Duncan highlights the importance of art, noting, “we are art [as unique individuals], and it is a language by which we can connect at a deep, deep level.” Whether invoking rage, curiosity, or love, art lets us relate to one another.     When asked what advice he would give to his younger self, Duncan wishes he would have guarded himself against others' opinions, and reminded himself to be okay with who he was. He muses he would tell himself to take more risks, taste and see as much as he can, and find mentors that grab his attention. The life of a working artist was not so much a choice for Duncan, but an inevitability. Being able to apply his natural talents let him explore the insistent internal voice that drew him towards art and creativity.      Join us next time for PART 2 of Duncan's story! *** If you want extra support in making, marketing, and building a business around your creativity then you are welcome to join me and a group of wonderful artists all over the world in THRIVE. For a limited time only I'm offering you all-access to THRIVE with immediate access to all the modules, courses, lessons, worksheets, community support, art expert & Q&A sessions for just €27.-/ month. This is a subscriber only episode, so come on and sign up at tonywalker.substack.com (tonywalker.substack.com) John Buchan:  John Buchan, officially 1st Baron Tweedsmuir was born in 1875 in Perth, Scotland and died in 1940 aged only 64 in Montreal, Canada. He was Governor General of Canada until he died in office. His father was a minister of the Church of Scotland. Many of our ghost story writers are children of clergymen.  He studied Classics at the University of Glasgow and then moved to Oxford University. After that he went to South Africa where he was private secretary to the High Commissioner of South Africa. Like Kipling, who we read last week, Buchan was a conservative son of the British Empire. He was a bit of a softie for a conservative though because later when MP for Peebles just south of Edinburgh, he supported votes for women, national health insurance for the poor and curtailing the power of the House of Lords. Though a Scot, he was not a Scottish Nationalist, and in common with many Scots of his class and time, he though Scotland was best off within the British Empire. When he returned from South Africa, he was called to the English Bar as a barrister (an advocate in Scotland). He was also editor of the still existing conservative magazine: The Spectator. In 1916, Buchan went to the Western Front, attached to the Intelligence Corps. Just before this he had just published his famous spy story The 39 Steps.  In 1935, Buchan went as Governor General to Canada. He had always liked Canada, written about it as a journalist and fought alongside Canadian troops in the First World War. He encouraged a distinct Canadian identity and nationality. He hosted King George VI on the king's tour of Canada.  He suffered a stroke at Rideau Hall and then a head injury as he fell. He was treated by the famous neurologist Wilder Penfield.  A Journey of Little Profit was published in 1896 in The Yellow Book, so he was just twenty-one at the time. It's a well-regarded story about a bargain with the Devil. Because of its Scottish setting it has echoes with James Hogg's The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner, and of course with the Faust Legend. The great use of dialogue and language with lots of Scottish dialect words sets this story apart but also the fact that Duncan Stewart becomes fond of the Devil and escapes with his soul. We see him first the older wiser man, now regretful of his wild youth. It's a great story, I hope you enjoyed it too. Welcome to another episode of Biotechnology Focus radio. This week we are discussing some of the recent mergers and acquisitions that have been rocking the headlines, some recently awarded grants and how machines are moving fast. I am your host Michelle Currie, here to bring you the lowdown on the Canadian biotech scene.  +++++  Celgene, a biotech giant, has merged with and acquired Juno Therapeutics and their leading blockbuster drug cancer therapy in one of their largest deals ever. For a total of $9 billion, Celgene will pay $87 a share in cash for those not already owned by this corporation.  Celgene and Juno have been collaborating since June 2015 under which the two companies would leverage T cell therapeutic strategies to develop treatments for patients with cancer and autoimmune diseases with an initial focus on CAR-T and TCR technologies. In April 2016, Celgene exercised its option to develop and commercialize the Juno CD19 program outside of North America and China.  Juno develops cell-based cancer immunotherapies based on chimeric antigen receptor and high-affinity T cell (CAR-T cell) receptor technologies to genetically engineer T cells to recognize and kill cancer. Several product candidates have shown compelling clinical responses in clinical trials in refractory leukemia and lymphoma conducted to date.  This acquisition will position Celgene to become a preeminent cellular immunotherapy company with a platform to be at the forefront of future advances. JCAR017, a pivotal stage asset, with an emerging favorable profile in DLBCL, is expected to add approximately $3 billion in peak sales and significantly strengthen Celgene’s lymphoma portfolio, and JCARH125 will enhance Celgene’s campaign against BCMA (B-cell maturation antigen), a key target in multiple myeloma.  +++++  The global pharma industry is undergoing a dramatic transition from a quest for blockbusters to the design of a precision medicine based drug design. Artificial intelligence is one of the most prominent elements that has been adopted as part of the transition from a fully integrated pharmaceutical company model of drug design to extensive interaction with smaller innovative R&D companies as well as academic institutions.  Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the activity devoted to making machines intelligent, and intelligence is that quality that enables an entity to function appropriately and with foresight in its environment (definition proposed by Nils J. Nillson, Stanford U.). Even though there are numerous definitions for AI, this one fits nicely into the goal of using machine learning for improving the rate of success in the design of novel and cost-effective therapeutics.  One of the primary reasons that AI has such a great potential in drug development is that there is a huge amount of health data available right now in the public health system. Clinical trials’ data, electronic medical records (EMR), genetic profiles and much more is the wealth representing the notion of BIG DATA in healthcare. The main challenge regarding the processing of big data is the need to process it in a meaningful and cost-effective fashion. That is why training a machine to fulfill the task becomes so attractive. Selecting and adjusting the right algorithms is the first essential step but once it is in place, training machines to find optimal patterns between the structure of “druggable molecules” and their optimal activity is within reach.  Canada has established a leadership position in training of machines to learn how to perform complex tasks, in a relatively short period of time. Based on recent commitments to the space, it is expected that we will witness in the foreseeable future designs of novel and much more specific therapeutics with higher potency and lesser side effects. The prospects are quite encouraging in light of the shift global pharma industry is adopting towards precision medicine. That shift will rely on sifting through patients’ medical records. Canadian AI machines are learning fast and are expected to become a key player in advancing academic concepts into standard and streamlined processes and organizations. In Ontario, the University of Toronto has emerged as a world-leading hub for research and entrepreneurship in this area. A potent combination of long-standing academic research in conjunction with the adoption of machine learning methodologies have already proven to be game-changing opportunities. Interactive approaches to computer science and medical research, combined with emerging best in class entrepreneurship programming and training is already yielding some fascinating fruits in the area of AI for drug discovery.  Companies like Structura Bio are taking the complex computational challenge of reducing noisy images from cryo-electron microscopes into readable highly accurate 3D structures of proteins and are doing what used to take a server room filled with computers a week, in a matter of seconds. Similarly, Phenomic AI (a recently incorporated UTEST company) uses a technique called deep learning to analyze data from high-throughput phenomic screens to analyze cell and tissue phenotypes in microscopy data with incredible accuracy. It holds out the potential for eliminating human intervention in the assessment of all that data. In some cases, companies like Deep Genomics and Atomwise are going all the way by leveraging their respective AI technologies to become drug discovery engines themselves. Our awareness of the impact of the AI revolution in drug discovery is already enormous and we’re only at the beginning of its adoption cycle. Future advances in Canada will be buoyed further by strong academic and institutional foundations that have been put in place to assist Canada in sustaining this advantage. The Vector Institute, as an example, was established in 2017 in partnership with Canada’s largest companies and the Federal and Provincial Government’s to attract and retain world-leading research talent and to promote cutting-edge research in the field.  Recently, partnerships have been established between the MaRS Innovation research healthcare ecosystem (UHN, Sickkids, Sunnybrook) with global players in the space of machine learning based drug design and developments. Partnerships with Schrödinger and Evotec have been established to capture the enormous potential of “fishing in the pond” of EMR’s rich source of unraveling the tissue/cellular architecture as a baseline for the discovery of novel disease targets, which thereby establishes a mechanism for better drugs.  The field of AI in the service of medical research is still in its infancy, but the initial avalanche of results is already starting to give us an idea of the great potential that machine learning can offer to those embarking on advancing drug development. Reducing screening times, aiding new drug candidates and finding the most effective drugs for specific diseases at a speed that humans cannot achieve is compelling, and we believe that AI will increasingly become part of the medical landscape. Once hurdles such as data standardized collection and storage as well as data privacy concerned are addressed, it is expected that we will witness an exponential inclination in the implementation of machine learning as a powerful tool in the design of more potent drugs with lesser side-effects. The FDA and Health Canada are encouraging pharmaceutical companies to join the choir.  To conclude, rephrasing from Eric Topol of the Scripps Research Institute (CNBC, May 2017), “The potential of artificial intelligence has probably the biggest impact of any type of technology on healthcare.”  +++++  Two of Canada’s largest producers of cannabis have struck a deal after months of negotiations and a hostile takeover bid. The board of directors and the special committee of the CanniMed board have agreed to support a new offer made by Aurora for the acquisition of all of the issued and outstanding shares of CanniMed not owned by Aurora.   Terry Booth, the CEO of Aurora Cannabis says, “We are very pleased to have come to terms with CanniMed on this powerful strategic combination that will establish a best-in-class cannabis company with operations across Canada and around the world.”   The new offer for CanniMed is approximately $1.1 billion based on Aurora’s implied share price of $12.65. The maximum amount of cash available under the amended offer will be $140 million, and the number of Aurora shares to be issued will be between approximately 72 million and 84 million. Assuming maximum cash elections, each CanniMed shareholder would receive $5.70 in cash and 2.9493 Aurora shares.  Despite CanniMed filing a law suit against Aurora earlier this month, this deal provides the optimum outcome for both companies.  +++++  The Ottawa Hospital has been awarded $12.7 million in the most recent project grant competition from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). The grant funding will be going to sixteen research groups at the hospital who are in affiliation with the University of Ottawa. This represents an enormous success rate of 30 per cent, doubling the national average.  The new funding will provide researchers the much-needed capital to delve deeper into their studies ranging on a plethora of subjects – anywhere from oncolytic viruses as immunotherapy treatments, using a holistic approach to improving the quality of life for the homeless, to understanding the role of liquid metabolism in the brain.  “I’m delighted that our researchers have once again achieved such a high success rate,” says Dr. Duncan Stewart, executive vice president of research at The Ottawa Hospital and professor of medicine at the University of Ottawa. “These new research projects have the potential to redefine the future of health-care, both at home and around the world.”  The Ottawa Hospital has scored above the national average in CIHR grant competitions for the past several years, including 2015, 2016, and 2017. This research centre shows great promise and innovative studies for the years ahead.  For the summaries of all the projects please visit biotechnologyfocus.ca   +++++  Well that wraps up another episode of Biotechnology Focus radio. The future of mobile, TV, self-driving cars and the iPhone What will the future look like for mobile, TV, self-driving cars and the iPhone? In the show, we will hear from two experts on tech scene in Canada and also a clip from Steve Jobs on the introduction of the iPhone a decade ago. Mobile, machine-learning and self-driving cars For the past 16 years, management services firm Deloitte Canada has released its Technology, Media and Telecommunications predictions that Deloitte believes will impact various industries and people’s daily lives. Duncan Stewart, director of TMT research for Deloitte Canada, presented his company’s take on several emerging technologies and trends during a recent conference in Toronto. In an interview with WRLWND Radio, Duncan elaborates on three key tech trends; 5G mobile technology, machine-learning, and automatic emergency brake systems. Listen, as Duncan explains what impact these three will have in our daily lives and why it’s important for businesses to keep a close watch on them. The iPhone, a look at the past and future  This week, 10 years ago, Steve Jobs announced to the world, the iPhone. It’s hard to believe that it has been a decade since the iPhone was introduced. The iPhone has changed the way we live, dramatically over the last 10 year.  A quote that really inspired Steve Jobs to be the driving force behind the iPhone, is by Alan Kay, an American computer scientist, who said, “People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware.” And that, is what Steve Jobs did. He worked really hard to bring us perfection. An example of this was just before the first iPhone was announced, there were two prototypes of the Acorn operating system that were being considered. One was like the iPod interface that was controlled with a click wheel, the other was an icon interface.  It would have made sense to go with the click wheel-based UI at that time due to the success of the iPod, but Steve Jobs decided he wanted the iPhone to have an entirely touchscreen-based interface and threatened to kick everyone else off the iPhone project if they disagreed. What would the iPhone look like in 2027? ·         It seems like the shape will remain the same, its been like that for the past decade. ·         It looks like the home button will still be there.   ·         There will be increase in performance as technology advances.   ·         3D photos, a possibility ·         We can see thinner and more flexible OLED screens, maybe a foldable iPhone? ·         Uncrackable screens ·         Wireless charging with solar panels The future of TV Lindsay Takashima, Vice President of Sales and Marketing from Hisense Canada joined WRLWND Radio to talk about what we can expect to see in the near future regarding TV sets. What Hisense Canada plans to unfold during the year and a laser type projector with a great life span and a better picture quality? Thanks to our guests, Duncan Stewart from Deloitte Canada and Lindsay Takashima from Hisense Canada.

Ipswich, Suffolk natives Basement are all about breaking down barriers. Across three studio albums, they've blended their love of second-wave emo, grunge, alternative rock and punk rock into some of the sharpest rock music to emerge from the UK in the 2010s. Then, there's also the literal aspect of things - at one of the band's shows, the surge of the crowd was so powerful that the crowd barrier caved in. This is the kind of passionate response that has come to define Basement's live show - screamed lyrics, high-flying stagedives and non-stop energy, even during the slow songs. Roughly an hour before doors opened for their sell-out Sydney show at the Factory Theatre, vocalist Andrew Fisher and bassist Duncan Stewart shared stories from across the pond - kicking around in hardcore bands, life after Basement and their ascent to becoming the biggest little band in the world.
