I’m your host Matt Coyne and today we’re in conversation with Tim Manning, executive producer from Jack Morton Worldwide and lecturer at Instituto Marangoni discussing the future of brand strategy post covid and what we can learn from the corporate space to evolve our industry. I first met Tim at Event Tech Live and the Facetime Exhibitor Masterclasses a few years ago when we were in conversation about the similarities and maybe also disparities between events and the retail space, so I’m really looking forward to chatting about what else we could learn to engage our audiences of the future in my conversation with Tim.To give you a little bit of a background on Tim, he delivers magic moments through customer journeys, experiences and storytelling drawn from years of experience delivering to clients including the United Nations, Formula one and five star hotels to name but a few. Listen to the podcast to learn a little more about Tim. We discussA fresh perspective on how we curate and create great experiences for delegates and brandsHow we’ve all been schooled over the last 12 months…and that’s a good thing! We need to continue to learn to evolve. Few of us know the perfect formulae for success in virtual or hybrid, so we need to continue to learn. Understanding and bringing psychology into events to really understand consumer behaviorWhere are we going next? How to answer the question of on demand versus liveHow do you really get to the bottom of a client brief – how do you really understand their strategy? Finally we asked Tim what we (people) can do to help us look at what’s next. “Ask yourself what you stand for. Be specific. Does that rock my world and do I have passion for it? If so, dive into it and remind you where your true north is. With everything you do, is it helping you move to where you want to go?”There were a number of references mentioned in this episode, so please do see various links below. There’s no denying it – life is going to hand us adversity. Time and time again, we will be challenged by our circumstances, and many times, those circumstances won’t be in our control. When I was 13 years old, I went blind for the first time, and I will admit, I let victim mentality take over at first. I let a number of false beliefs control my actions, and I watched as my once full, vibrant life began to shrink. Until, one day, I decided not to play the victim anymore. I decided to acknowledge the situation I was in and take the next best step. Radical responsibility is what allowed me to do that, and in this episode of the podcast, we’re diving deep into what that means. We’ll explore the topic in the context of some of the most difficult events life can throw at us: grief, loss, uncertainty. I hope you leave this episode with a set of tools to help you become more intentional in the face of absolutely anything life can throw at you. It was during my most difficult challenges that I learned these lessons, and I want to share them with you. I mentioned a few resources during this episode. My favourite recent hacks to help your energy and vitality levels. Recorded on the beach - very lucky to get a dose of winter Vitamin D. More info on brain hacks: I first used this brain sensing headband about 5 years ago. Click here if you’d like to see my good friend Dr. Stephen Simpson modelling it in an earlier podcast. It is described as a personal meditation assistant that will gently guide you to a calm mind. Put on the Muse headband, earbuds, start the app, and close your eyes. You will hear changing sounds of weather based on the real-time state of your brain which allows you to obtain a deeper sense of focus and motivates you to build a highly rewarding practice. Brain hack 2 to energise you: Meditation app. You might remember I mentioned Sam Harris’ Waking Up meditation app about a year ago. And I’m still using it. It makes a big difference to my day and has got me thinking about all sorts of trippy consciousness concepts. It’s very simple, and introduces the listener to lots of different types of meditation. Each day is about 10 minutes so manageable. They’ve recently introduced a 20-minute option too. Brain hack 3 to energise you? A U.S. brain research company called Emotiv has developed a brain-scanning device with two electrodes, one for each ear (thanks to Zestology listener Sonia for flagging it up). It looks like standard ear pods, and functions like them too. I’m not keen, in fact I wouldn’t even want to wear standard earpods all day connected to either bluetooth or wifi. But that aside, technology moving into user-friendly brain-scanning raises all sorts of ethical considerations, and whilst I quite like the Muse headband, I draw the line at this! What about you? Let me know.
Technology whisperer Tatjana Dzambazova on asking the right questions to avoid the waste of talent, connecting and inspiring others, becoming vegetarian, and the myth of a better life. Tatjana is Director of product management, software solutions, at Bright Machines, a software-driven-manufacturing start-up based in San Francisco. Tatjana's career started as an architect—she practiced over 12 years in Vienna and London. In 2000 she started her 18-year design technology journey with Autodesk, mainly in dual role of product manager for many new, disruptive software solutions, and a global technology speaker. In her two decades working in the digital design industry she was Autodesk's first product manager for Revit and a pioneer evangelist of the BIM Building Information Modeling approach in architecture and construction. During the Maker movement, she was employee number one and helped launch the Autodesk's consumer group, helping create innovative, disruptive digital fabrication and 3D printing solutions (the 123D line of products, such as 123D Make now known as Slicer for Fusion and many others). This group transformed into Pier 9 and led to a new phase 'Design and Make' in Autodesk, and the creation/acquisition of fabrication tools that complement the design tools. She also led the computer vision initiatives and the ReMake & ReCap Photo product. Tatjana was also on the forefront of web story telling through visual programming, leading the Smithsonian 3DExplorer software effort and Project Play and project manager for Dr. Louise Leakey of African Fossils. Before joining Bright Machines, she spent a year at Velo3D as director of product management, UX, and design, leading Flor, the printing preparation and simulation software of the solution, along with scientists and engineers who are pushing the limits of industrial-grade quality metal additive solutions for aerospace, medical, and industrial applications. Tatjana is a technology book author and an energetic, passionate "Technology Whisperer." She presented at conferences around the world, including TEDx and Future of Storytelling FoST, and gave many talks on the convergence of technology trends and their impact on the future of design and manufacturing, covering Generative Design, Additive Manufacturing, IoT, Robotics, and Machine learning. Don't get confused if you google Tanja and find lots of photos of her and lions, leopards, tigers and jaguars, or mentions of movies where she acted, such as Witness 11 or RICE. Still her, but that's a story for another podcast. Connect with Tanja on LinkedIn and TatjanaDzambazova.com. Favorite quotes "I have chosen a life in which I want to learn a little about many things. Although in reality I respect the opposite, I respect people who have dedicated their entire life to do one thing perfectly." "People love to learn. There's nothing more beautiful than when you give a talk or a lecture and you see somebody's face light up. That's because you opened a new door or opportunity in their mind, and you taught them. They want to know more." "You inspired me so much. I want to be you when I grow up." "For me it's a failure not to try. Innovation is not safe. People who change the world don't rely on talent, they rely on work." "Don't ever let the disbelievers steer you away from a good idea. Just run with it. Believe in yourself and go with it." "How does the world look like with my solution already adopted, fully implemented in the world?" "I feel I'm postponing life." "There's never a later. If you don't do it now you might never do it." In this first episode with a freer discussion format we talk about how we form new habits and the difficulties we face as we try to keep them, in particular regarding Magnus’ attempt to start meditating regularly. David tells us about his own mindfulness meditation habit and we contrast our personal experiences against Charles Duhigg’s “The Power of Habit” and Sam Harris’ “Waking Up”. TIME STAMPS -------------------- 00:30 Today’s topic: Unknown 01:10 Background: Charles Duhigg’s “The Power of Habit” and Sam Harris’ “Waking Up” 01:30 David: How is your meditation habit going? 01:55 Magnus: How I’ve failed 03:00 Not being disciplined might be a question of the chicken or the egg 04:35 Magnus trying to explain…(away?) 05:10 Analogy: the successful habit of exercising 06:50 How more positive self-talk motivates 07:10 Magnus: A conscious decision not letting reality get in the way of the exercise habit 09:15 The connection between the two books and the question of not being able to create the habit to meditate 11:30 The parts of a habit: Cue, routine, reward 12:00 The conscious decision to exercise might not be conscious 14:10 Sam Harris: All our experiences are products of our consciousness -> The illusion of the I (or the self) 17:00 Motivation comes out of the narratives we tell ourselves 17:20 Mindfulness helps us see these narratives 18:30 Narratives are useful to create meaning. In this age when so many fearful people run to their polemic corners, demonize those that are different, and are unable to compromise, listen or learn from their opposites, Rod and Trish Thompson model a real-life example of how it can work and work well. To borrow from 1 Peter 4:8, “Love covers a multitude of faults.” In other words, when we love someone, we’re much more prone to overlook their faults, cut them some slack, and give them the benefit of the doubt. In this context, we’re less likely to take things personal, be easily offended, or retaliate. Love is that cache or freecell that absorbs the human difference instead of keeping it in play, further escalating the blow for blow mania. Love also helps us respect the other person’s right to think differently. It may even help us realize that that person’s different perspective does not necessarily have to be a threat to our perspective, unless it reveals weakness in it and can then serve as a catalyst to amend and strengthen our own. Staying in the room with difference has a way of maturing us and deflating the insecure ego that desperately needs to be right. The Thompson’s give us a window into how this type of harmony might be realized in religiously mixed marriages. We taped this episode on July 31st, 2016. She’s a counselor for those recovering from religious trauma. It’s our most poplular episode to date. She called and asked me to plug a retreat she’s got coming up September 9-12th in Berkeley, California. More info is available on her website, journeyfree.org, I’ll put a link in the show notes. A Journey Free Retreat weekend is a chance to come together in a small group with the shared goal of taking steps to recover from harmful religion. Led by Dr. Winell, it provides a safe place to process experiences with the support of others who understand. The 3 day program includes presentations, discussions, and guided activities to facilitate both intellectual insight and emotional growth, providing a leap forward in one’s personal development. Getting through the fear, grief, anger and stress isn’t easy but you don’t have to do it alone. The cost of the retreat is scaled according to your income, so it’s gonna cost between $500 to $700 and they’ll even work out a payment plan. She just wants you to come. So check that out at http://journeyfree.org/retreats/ I also want to mention that I was the featured guest on The Wayward Atheists podcast recently, episode 12. One of the hosts of that show is David E up in Canada. He was our guest on episode 83. So check out episode 12 of the Wayward Atheists, available wherever you listen to podcasts. http://waywardatheists.com/category/podcast/ I also want to thank Carol Kuruvilla, Religion Associate Editor for the Huffington Post, for including the Everyone’s Agnostic podcast in her article, “17 Great Podcasts For The Spiritually Curious.” Most of the other podcasts listed there are either specific to a religion or inter-faith. I believe the only atheist podcast on the list are this one and Freethought Radio hosted by former guest of this show, Dan Barker (that’s episode 72), and his wife Annie Laurie Gaylor. Huff Post article featuring Everyone’s Agnostic I would also like to point to Sam Harris’ recent podcast episode 41 on his show called “Waking Up.” The episode is titled Faith in Reason and features guest Eric Weinstein. It’s been 11 years since Harris published his book, “The End of Faith,” and he has continued to explore the complexities of Faith and Reason and this particular episode really captures these tensions well.
