What is it about stories that shape us, move us, and help make sense of the world? Today's guest, Carol Lefevre, is a master of the craft. With eight books to her name, along with award-nominated novellas, essays, and journalism, Carol's work has been recognised for its depth, beauty, and insight. Her novella Murmurations was shortlisted for both the Christina Stead Prize for Fiction and the South Australian Festival Awards for Literature, highlighting her as one of Australia's most compelling literary voices. With a PhD in Creative Writing and a role as a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Adelaide, Carol has spent her career exploring the art and power of storytelling. Individually, Starlings are small, dark birds that at first glance don't seem particularly special. But when they gather together in massive flocks on winter evenings to perform their aerial ballet, it's quite a different matter! Tonight, our panel discuss the phenomenon of Starling murmurations.
Filipinx American poet Ina Cariño shares a brand new “sonnet crown” poem that they wrote for SongWriter on the subject of family and empathy. Scientist Sarah Nila describes her experiments exploring empathy with children and mothers in the Philippines, and how Ina's poem contains echoes of her findings. In this all-new episode, Krista engages biomimicry pioneer Janine Benyus in a second, urgent conversation, alongside creative biomimicry practitioner Azita Ardakani Walton. Together they trace precise guidance and applied wisdom from the natural world for the civilizational callings before us now. What does nature have to teach us about healing from trauma? And how might those of us aspiring to good and generative lives start to function like an ecosystem rather than a collection of separate, siloed projects? We are in kinship. How to make that real — and in making it real, make it more of an offering to the whole wide world?Krista, Azita, and Janine spoke at the January 2024 gathering of visionaries, activists, and creatives where Krista also drew out Lyndsey Stonebridge and Lucas Johnson for the recent episode on Hannah Arendt. We're excited to bring you back into that room.Janine Benyus's classic work is Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature. She is the co-founder of the non-profit Biomimicry Institute. She also co-founded Biomimicry 3.8, a consulting and training company. Azita Ardakani Walton is a philanthropist and social entrepreneur. Her projects have included, among many things, the creative agency Lovesocial and the experimental investment vehicle, Honeycomb Portfolio.
Historian Peniel Joseph says there have been three periods of reconstruction in American history. The third period, he says, is happening right now. Associate producer Julia Corcoran introduces this conversation with Joseph. Then, Danish photographer Soren Solkaer first saw mysterious patterns in the sky, technically called murmurations, when he was a child. He started photographing birds flying above the northern stretches of the Wadden Sea, which Denmark residents called the Black Sun. Senior producer Karyn Miller-Medzon introduces Solkaer's conversation with host Robin Young. And, Chicago music venue the Metro Club celebrated 40 years in operation in 2022. In its 4 decades, it's been a haven for punk, rock and metal music, hosting big-name acts like Black Flag and R.E.M. Producer Chris Bentley spoke to the club owner and long-time patrons.
How much meaning do you need, Slushies? When language lingers, when images form a spiral, a murmuration, might a poem's mood hold meaning close to its heart and simultaneously at bay? And, also, how do you pronounce ‘ichor'? All this and more in a rollicking conversation about poet Nick Visconti's new work, “Burial” and “Unmake These Things.” And speaking of things, listen for Samantha on Anne Carson's zen koan dollop of insight from Red Doc>: “To live past the end of your myth is a perilous thing.” Or for Kathy and Marion confessing their North Carolina ritual groping of the Dale Earnhardt statue in Kannapolis, NC. And finally: geese. Nick Visconti's poem triggered a reverie-- that time when we accidentally stumbled into the annual Snow Geese migration in Eastern Pennsylvania. At the table: Dagne Forrest, Kathleen Volk Miller, Alex Tunney, Samantha Neugebauer, Marion Wrenn. This episode is brought to you by our sponsor Wilbur Records, who kindly introduced us to the artist is A.M.Mills whose song “Spaghetti with Loretta” now opens our show. Nick Visconti is a writer living with an artist and a cat in Brooklyn. He plays softball on Sundays. Burial It is love, not grief, which inters the deceased in a hill made of clay. Sod embraces crossed arms, legs, eyes shut looking forever at nothing beneath our feet—a container for men unmade, no boat to speak of. No oars darkly dipped in water as we pictured it would be. Instead, a single shred of light piercing every lens it catches. Instead, a pathway none cross, just follow through and up and up—the cusp of ending, nothing at all like the end. He isn't in this yard when his children roam. Still, they dig, they expect to find him: braided leather, steel-wound aglets, his black opal intact. Unmake these things The sand before me like water, fluid and holy under the cratered crown nearly half-awake, circling as I draw the one way I know—stick figures in a backdrop scenery, thick- headed and content, wheeling psalms of birds, wide-sloping M's grouped in permanent murmur. I don't bother with the sun's face, bare in the upper left corner of the page. I've made a habit out of hoarding ornaments, given them their own orbit like the russet ichor dashed with cinnamon I choke down every morning and afternoon. The city's puncture-prone underbite nips the sky, consuming the bodies above—thunderheads, billboards notched, alive in the glow of that always- diurnal square. There's been talk lately of irreversible chemistry, an acceptable stand-in for cure among believers and experts in and on the subject of Zoloft-sponsored serotonin. A first weaning is possible. Do not bother with a second.

In today's episode I have the pleasure of being in conversation with mentor and modern mystic Ishita Sharma. Ishita Sharma serves as a mentor, mirror and activator to those who wish to better our world starting from within. She was born in Haridwar in northern India and came to the US as a teenager and began to study as a physicist, then turned to architecture and design, evolving into a multidisciplinary artist. Through it all, she felt that she was looking for an even deeper framework to explain what felt obvious to her: that we are all connected. In 2016, she established Come to Center to share the joy and freedom of living an awake, connected and fulfilling life. She holds space for life in all of its abundant complexity, from the highest joys and miracles to the deepest suffering and sorrows. Her work points people back to their own inner harmonic and wholeness. Today, Ishita works with contemporary visionaries, spiritual seekers and healers, therapists and coaches, CEOs and incarcerated youth to create futures that are free of past limitations to help them embody power, pleasure and show up in service, while rising beyond ego-centric paradigms. Ishita's work is the expression of her deepest realizations, and an invitation into your own. Her unique approach integrates non-dual awareness with its embodiment, subtle energetics and relational dynamics to free the core of personal and systemic hindrances. In this episode we explore the mechanics of anchoring into presence and noticing our habits of attention to become more skilled at navigating our relationship with ourselves and others. In Emergent Strategy, adrienne maree brown invites us to imagine a future in which we humans have gained the ability to move akin to a flock of starlings, each of us attuned to those around us, able to shift and move in concert with the community(ies) of which we are a part. This Sunday, February 13, we wonder about the wisdom of starlings and how they might inform our lives, and we'll celebrate and lift up those in the community who volunteer their time and energy in the multidimensional dance of church, making this community the vibrant and radiant place that it is. Panti Bliss is with alt-folk artist Sive in this episode of The Panti Personals. A proud Naas native Sive's voice and music is transformative, often called ‘dream folk', and beyond her creative and artistic life she uses music and song as a community musician in choirs whose members include those with dementia and care home residents. During lockdown, while some of us were binging on Netflix, she co founded a social enterprise called Embrace Music, using music to make a positive difference in the world, and wrote a song cycle for the hospice movement ‘Murmurations'. She's a climate warrior or worrier and says if you're not concerned about what's happening in the global environment you're not paying attention to the world. In this up close and personal conversation Sive shares three songs with Panti – one of her latest ‘I Think Before I Speak' and one of her old ones ‘If I Had A Home To Go To' as well as a beautiful ballad ‘Tenlach' – an old Irish word for home and hearth. Other music you hear in this episode includes: Sive – ‘We Are Moving' (from her first album) Murmurations – ‘Better Days to Come' Murmurations – ‘Blackbird's Lament' Murmurations – ‘The Dawning' (from The Irish Hospice project). as well as a clip from a recording with one of her community choirs. You can find out more about Sive and her music : www.sivemusic.com and you can support her on patreon where she shares a new demo every month – patreon.com/sivemusic. Sive has a gig in Clonacody House in Tipperary on 21st December with Mike Hanrahan and Emma Langford, and will be taking part in a First Fortnight event in the Riverbank Arts Centre in Kildare on the 15th Jan. A freezing cold afternoon in winter, and we visited the RSPB nature reserve at Otmoor in Oxfordshire to try to see the starling murmurations. The main event happened way off in the distance and was impossible to record, but walking back along the icy, flooded path, we accidentally disturbed a huge number of starlings in a hedgerow right next to us, who took to the skies and circled above our heads, captured in this recording. Recorded by Cities and Memory.

The second of the two shorter Christmas and New Year editions where the boys discuss some of their inspirations including Don McCullin's 'In Africa’ book and ‘Extraordinary Women’ by Tom Stoddart. It seems Kev has spent five hours a day watching quick fire tournament chess over the New Year break, while Neale has been touring the site of a suspected nuclear accident on a disused airbase near his home with the family! They talk of photographer inspirations, Kev choosing Frank Horvat who is responsible for suggesting; “Photography is the art of not pushing the button,” and Neale being fascinated by Søren Solkær’s Murmurations study. The full length shows return from next week.

When Pamela Cook chatted to Carol Lefevre about her newly released Novella "Murmurations" for "The Book Launch," she had no idea it would inspire an entire "Convo Couch" episode based on the idea of writing instinctually from points of inspiration. In this episode Carol talks about the inspirations behind her latest book and how she follows her instincts in the writing process. Following the interview, Pam goes deeper with Kel about her own writing instincts around the book she is currently writing during isolation in Covid19. Technology whisperer Tatjana Dzambazova on asking the right questions to avoid the waste of talent, connecting and inspiring others, becoming vegetarian, and the myth of a better life. Tatjana is Director of product management, software solutions, at Bright Machines, a software-driven-manufacturing start-up based in San Francisco. Tatjana's career started as an architect—she practiced over 12 years in Vienna and London. In 2000 she started her 18-year design technology journey with Autodesk, mainly in dual role of product manager for many new, disruptive software solutions, and a global technology speaker. In her two decades working in the digital design industry she was Autodesk's first product manager for Revit and a pioneer evangelist of the BIM Building Information Modeling approach in architecture and construction. During the Maker movement, she was employee number one and helped launch the Autodesk's consumer group, helping create innovative, disruptive digital fabrication and 3D printing solutions (the 123D line of products, such as 123D Make now known as Slicer for Fusion and many others). This group transformed into Pier 9 and led to a new phase 'Design and Make' in Autodesk, and the creation/acquisition of fabrication tools that complement the design tools. She also led the computer vision initiatives and the ReMake & ReCap Photo product. Tatjana was also on the forefront of web story telling through visual programming, leading the Smithsonian 3DExplorer software effort and Project Play and project manager for Dr. Louise Leakey of African Fossils. Before joining Bright Machines, she spent a year at Velo3D as director of product management, UX, and design, leading Flor, the printing preparation and simulation software of the solution, along with scientists and engineers who are pushing the limits of industrial-grade quality metal additive solutions for aerospace, medical, and industrial applications. Tatjana is a technology book author and an energetic, passionate "Technology Whisperer." She presented at conferences around the world, including TEDx and Future of Storytelling FoST, and gave many talks on the convergence of technology trends and their impact on the future of design and manufacturing, covering Generative Design, Additive Manufacturing, IoT, Robotics, and Machine learning. Although in reality I respect the opposite, I respect people who have dedicated their entire life to do one thing perfectly." "People love to learn. There's nothing more beautiful than when you give a talk or a lecture and you see somebody's face light up. That's because you opened a new door or opportunity in their mind, and you taught them. They want to know more." "You inspired me so much. I want to be you when I grow up." "For me it's a failure not to try. Innovation is not safe. People who change the world don't rely on talent, they rely on work." "Don't ever let the disbelievers steer you away from a good idea. Just run with it. Believe in yourself and go with it." "How does the world look like with my solution already adopted, fully implemented in the world?" "I feel I'm postponing life." "There's never a later. If you don't do it now you might never do it." “Your book is an incredible thing. I recognise so much of my home in it, even a few things I didn’t know. I’d been planning to keep it, but as you’re still around, I thought you might like it back. I hope you continue to work on it. I fear that the place we both know is lost with the Sharrow’s death. The book is a fitting tribute.” -Venz *** Having decided to head East the survivors of Carn Veskl gather their belongings. Soon they’ll climb the steep path out of the valley into Cenja, a territory devoted to mourning. A forested landscape dotted with graves, tombs and graves from a thousand cultures; where fruit grows bland and grief lingers like a thick fog. As the caravan prepares to leave there are a few moments - to heal wounds, to make plans, to catch-up with old friends. Venz returns a book, Belka reunites with Vilte, Bris shares unwelcome wisdom and Challa sees a bird. *** As mentioned in the episode we recently created a Discord - a place where you can chat about the podcast. Gaby and Liz have been in a relationship since the 80s but the last few years have been difficult for them both. Gaby told me her cancer is incurable and will kill her eventually, although no one knows when and shortly after her cancer diagnosis Liz found out she had breast cancer. Liz is one of the editors for an online journal called Murmurations and when I was talking to them they were working on a piece together which focused on facing death. You can find the journal by searching 'Murmurations: Journal of Transformative Systemic Practice'. When I met with them they invited me to their house in South East London where I was presented with tea and short bread. We chatted for a little while before getting into the interview. It was good talking to a couple like these two because they bounced off each other so well.

For this episode I got to interview Otter Lieffe who wrote and self-published the incredible book of speculative fiction called Margins and Murmurations about struggle, sex work and time travel. As you know I think DIY media and representation are super important topics, so it was amazing to talk to her about the creative process and how healing it can be to imagine a different future for marginalised folks. We also talked about reframing PTSD, visibility, creating dignified working conditions for ourselves, community funding and the radical bodywork network. You can support Otter`s work and receive access to wonderful extras through her Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/otterlieffe Otter is a working class, femme, trans woman, in and out of Brussels and Berlin where she runs a trans and queer-focused holistic clinic called Safer Healing (https://saferhealing.org/). Margins and Murmurations (https://otterlieffe.com/marginsandmurmurations/) is her first novel. She has been involved in grassroots activism for over a decade, in Latin America, the Middle East, Europe and North America and has at various times found herself involved in queer community organising, land reclamation, language teaching in migrant worker communities, playing samba in demonstrations and being too tired to get up the next day. She speaks between 3 and 5 languages and rarely sits still long enough to watch the seasons change. Written by a trans woman and sex worker, Margins and Murmurations puts gender, queerness and femininity at the centre of its twisting narrative. In this sensitive exploration of exclusion, Otter Lieffe calls us to renew our struggles against oppression and to proudly reclaim the margins that so many of us call home. Margins and Murmurations “This is the story of Ash, a trans woman and healer living in a corner of Europe controlled by a militarized state. Amidst the economic crash of the 2020s, this land, once a hub of diversity, saw the rise of a state-imposed monoculture of gender, sexuality, ability and race. Those that didn’t fit, known as the divergents, were imprisoned, expelled or worse. Ash and her best friend Pinar long ago escaped the City, left behind their days of fighting State oppression, and are eking out a calmer life in the forest, ravaged by the effects of climate change. One day, Jason, a resistance fighter, arrives abruptly into their life, reigniting personal and political drives and they find themselves drawn back into the fight. :: About me and the Daydreaming Wolves podcast :: My name is Yarrow I am a queer writer, body worker, plant lover and ritual facilitator.
