Sandra Martin is an award-winning journalist, literary critic, former obituary writer, and the author of A Good Death: Making the Most of Our Final Choices. In that book, which she describes as a social history of the right-to-die movement, Sandra writes about how law, religion, medicine, and social norms can affect people's bodily autonomy and end-of-life choices in unpredictable and sometimes devastating ways; she also tells some amazing stories. In this conversation, she talks with Meghan about why it's so difficult to maintain autonomy over our deaths, even if we think we're making proper arrangements. She explains the difference between physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia, what these practices meant in past centuries versus what they mean today, and why we're kidding ourselves if we think we'll keep a stash of heavy drugs on hand for when the time comes. She also talks about Canada's Medical Assistant In Dying Act, better known as MAID. When it was first passed in 2016, MAID allowed adults to obtain medically-assisted death if they were experiencing terrible suffering and their death was "reasonably foreseeable." Since then, MAID has been expanded in ways that have led to some alarming news coverage, including allegations that it's being offered to people simply because they were chronically ill and couldn't afford their own care. While Sandra is not an expert on MAID, her familiarity with right-to-die laws in Canada allows her to put those reports in some context and she offers her perspective on how far is too far and, moreover, how overreach by activists could threaten the whole movement. In the bonus portion for paying subscribers, Sandra stays overtime to talk about how she feels about being the age that she is and what she wants (or thinks she wants) for her own death. Guest Bio: Sandra Martin, an award-winning long-form journalist, literary critic, and public policy specialist, is a contributing writer for The Globe and Mail and the author of several books including A Good Death: Making the Most of Our Final Choices, a social history of the right to die movement in Canada and around the world. Winner of the B.C. National Non-Fiction Award and a finalist for both the Dafoe Prize and the Donner Prize in Public Policy, A Good Death was named one of the best books of 2016 by The Globe and Mail, the CBC and several other media outlets. A recent study takes an in-depth look at the unsafe and often dehumanizing conditions Oregon farmworkers have endured during the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers from Oregon universities collaborated with advocacy organizations and farmworkers themselves to understand the challenges these essential workers have faced and what policies they want to see changed to improve conditions in the future. We hear from Sandra Martin, an Oregon farmworker and COVID-19 emergency response coordinator for Bienstar, an organization that provides housing and other resources to farm workers and their families. Also joining us are Jennifer Martinez-Medina, a PhD candidate at Portland State University and Anabel Hernandez-Mejia, communications and advocacy coordinator for Farmworker Housing Development Corporation. On a National Day of Remembrance in Canada, the UK and USA, Tara and Billy welcomed Sister Sandra Martin of Rebekah Lodge Unity #145 in Victoria, BC to take them down memory lane over her 47 years as a member of Rebekahs. Sandra reveals that the road for Rebekahs has been difficult since the SGL motioned for all Odd Fellows Lodges be open to women, which saw members leave her lodge to join one of the local Odd Fellows lodges. And from around that time, the relations between the lodges became strained to where communication about and participation in activities barely existed. The interview is not all about the rough times, as Sandra gives a glimpse into “them good old days” and also the working of a Rebekah Lodge. "Belief is the enemy." - John KeelWe teased the John Keel EVPs and added them in this segment. As I understood it, Brent wasn't sold on EVPs until John Keel's name started popping in. Is he a believer now? I think it's safe to say he's keeping an open mind and curious enough to explore the possibilities.I'll let Brent elaborate on this. "It wasn't that I wasn't an EVP believer. I was skeptical of what a lot of people thought were EVPs many times. I did believe it was quite possible. I had done some attempts years earlier and debunked a whole lot of audio recordings myself and a group of people I was working with as other things. Especially voices of other people in the next door. People often don't realize how much a recorder can pick up. You've got to have a controlled environment and a critical and careful evidence review." In other words, there is more involved in collecting an EVP than hitting "record". Brent Raynes is Publisher and Editor of Alternate Perceptions magazine. He was 14 when he started researching paranormal phenomena. Of the three people he cites as role models or influencers, John Keel became more of a mentor.Brent interviewed his first contactee in August 1971, in Toronto, Canada. The article in the image is about that interview. He's compiled a huge archive of Fortean, Paranormal, UFO and Unexplained cases since then. The most recent book - John Keel: The Man, The Myths, and The Ongoing Mysteries covers in depth what his two previous books don't: John Keel and the perceptions of others who knew him, in addition to relevant cases Brent personally researched. Testimonial for Brent's book: "John Keel was a rich and complex character and Brent captures him perfectly. What a gift for all John Keel fans and for those who will be introduced to him by this book." - Sandra Martin, Keel's former literary agent. FYI on previous books: On the Edge of Reality. Link. Mouth watering interview with author Sandra Martin,"Snapshots: Memories and Recipes". Hear about her wonderful gifts and experiences, including a delicious recipe. The flavor is orange.
Sandra Martin, [Snapshots: Memories and Recipes](https://www.lisahaganbooks.com/book_snapshots.php) Names were dropped. 1/Ingo Swann and (derailed) dinner party caper. 2/John Cleese and hands on healing in a crowded restaurant. Those stories are included in the interview. One that we didn't cover is a fascinating past life reveal that explains an unusual life long connection with France. That's in the book. **My fav recipe in the book: Grandmother Maude's Orange Chiffon Cake ** Unintended plot twist: **Typo in the recipe**. Really. When I told Lisa (Sandra's Daughter) we were practicing our cake skills and adjusting the cooking time, we both laughed. Then I explained what I meant **Cake number one** baked at 65 minutes was a bit dry but tasty. Andy and I figured our special gas oven was so efficient it just did a better job than one Grandma might have relied on when she used her recipe. **Cake number two** baked at 45 minutes was significantly more moist and the frosting seemed to cover better. Yum! Lisa's birthday is before mine. I was waiting to post our results when I got a note from Sandra. She discovered a typo in the book recipe when she was making Lisa's birthday cake. Really. That's right. Bake time should be: 35 minutes. **Cake number three** was just right. Recipe is on the blog. We talked with moviemakers Isaac Alongi and Sandra Martin about their recent project called Trust Fund. Their approach is to create stories people are drawn to that have Bible principles in them. Isaac and Sandra are everyday people who live in Kansas City but who feel a calling to reach people with the gospel in a big way. Their movies are not intentionally not classified as “Christian” so that people who need to experience the gospel can bump into it. They are passionate about their Christian faith and about telling great stories. Show Notes: Sandra and Isaac share their story of becoming filmmakers Started working for other moviemakers then sought after their own movie script• Sandra did the work to learn how to write her own script The first script was rejected so Sandra had to start over Isaac is a successful photographer who is getting back to his original dream of making movies Isaac has worked on other films, but the Trust Fund is their first project What makes a movie Christian is the worldview behind it Sandra is not writing a movie for the Christian market, she has the principles in it The strategy is to produce movies anyone will come to and enjoy The storytellers for every generation shape the culture If you want to reach people that are not in the church you need to tell stories that appeal to everyone There is a purpose for creating movies for Christian audiences and it's good as well Trust Fund was filmed in 25 days in Kansas City Isaac and Sandra tells of some wonderful ways God moved to help the movie happen Faith-based movies have become a genre but movies can be made with a Christian perspective Sandra wants to make movies that people can talk about later We talk about the next movie Isaac and Sandra are working on Isaac and Sandra had to wear many hats; in the next movie they will do things differently to help them focus on telling the story They feel like God is behind them to make movies that relate to large audiences We discuss the marketing process for a movie; it's expensive Marketing is hard; the best marketing wins Half the budget will be on marketing for the next movie Their hometown, Kansas City, rallied around the movie to provide great publicity They are hoping to build a brand over time by releasing more movies Isaac would like to be more genuine with their marketing by being more organic
