Convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh is serving out a double life sentence at a South Carolina prison. The disgraced lawyer was convicted of murder in March of this year for the shootings of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. Hours ago, pictures began circulating online, showing what seems to be selfies Murdaugh has taken while in prison. The images have generated lots of online conversation, with people wondering where these pictures came from. Is it contraband? Is it legal? Is it really Murdaugh? News 19 went searching for answers and found that yes, it's totally legal. In fact, the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) tells us it's a service given to all inmates. The pictures of Murdaugh were released after a Freedom of Information Act request was filed, which provides the public the right to request access to federal agency records. The SCDC tells News 19 that every inmate is issued a tablet, which they can use to make monitored telephone calls, take classes, read books, subscribe to entertainment that is pre-approved and receive messages from the institution. The department says they are not connected to the internet or to social media. These tablets are from ViaPath Technologies, the department's telephone partner, formerly called GTL. According to a statement from the company, it serves more than 2,100 facilities and over 1.6 million inmates in every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.READ MORE: https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/crime/photos-circulating-online-inmate-alex-murdaugh-appears-selfies-inside-prison/101-24005ef8-01f5-4e22-9072-47618082b9bfA man was arrested after police say he impersonated a medical professional and performed an illegitimate medical exam on a woman. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said that a woman reported the incident on Tuesday, July 11. Consisting of 8 cities (Bell, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Cudahy, Huntington Park, Maywood, South Gate and Vernon), and roughly 440,000 residents (90% identifying as Latinx), stretching along the 710 freeway, Southeast Los Angeles has been one of the hardest hit by COVID-19, as many of its residents being the essential workers of our region. Prior to COVID-19, Southeast LA has long faced environmental challenges, given its location adjacent to a major freeway; has had less access to green space than the rest of the county; and have less access to grocery stores and fresh produce. As South Gate Councilmember Denise Diaz has noted, “We are the doughnut hole of LA County. Funding tends to go to our neighboring cities and not here.” Founded on the belief that “community problems must be solved by the community itself,” CivitasLA is pleased to be joined by Andy Carrasco, VP, SoCalGas and Emma Hernandez, Chief Executive Officer, of Southeast Community Development Corp. (SCDC) two civic leaders working to elevate the collective voice of the Southeast LA region. Hear how SCDC has continued to engage local stakeholders and funding sources to invest in the area and transform the region. Eric Mitchell, also known as EGutta from the rap Group 3 6 Mafia and Prophet Posse, grew up in Memphis,TN in the early 90's. In the 90s, the era of drugs and government assistance housing was most high. Around that time 3 6 Mafia was forming their popularity and EGutta was right there in the thick of things. The Voice Behind Mississippi Bars: Special Edition of EGutta of 36 Mafia: The Revelation Part 2 of 3. EGutta reflects over his life saying, "You know growing up in Memphis, TN wasn't always good. It's an everyday struggle in the city. I did a lot of bad things that I don't want to discuss but I prayed about it and moved on. So I had to get it how I live." EGutta recalls being in his car and driving the streets of Memphis looking for his next job. He says, "I was in the streets everyday riding and getting high. I was looking for businesses to rob and victims to slay. I was considered a menace to society, not knowing what I was getting myself into as a teen." In 2004, Eric EGutta Mitchell was incarcerated on four counts of aggravated robbery with Memphis rapper Snootie Wild (Team Yayo). He was convicted and sentenced to fifty three months at the Penal Farm ( The Shelby County Division of Corrections facility on Mullins Station Road in Memphis, Tennessee). Eric states that," It was pure hell!" He says,"When I did those 53 month in SCDC, it was dangerous. I was still rarely young between the age of 21 to 26, so my mindset was trying to deal with the current situation of being locked up. It was a mind-thing." EGutta had to adapt to the prison system as well as adjusting to his fellow peers while being right in the thick of it all. He says, "It was a lot going on in the city dealing with the gangs and street life and I was in the middle of it all. I was part of an organization that was considered dangerous in Memphis at the time. So my life was on a level of survival."Eric recalls being locked up with renown rapper Playa Fly, Yo Millionaire, and other Memphis rappers. He states that, "It was an experience and I had to go through alot in order to understand the life I was living. I was caught up in the street life to a point where it was no return. I couldn't go back to a normal life. Once you catch a body or rob your first store/victim, It's like a drug and it becomes very addictive. So my life changed drastically and for the worse. Eric Mitchell was released after serving his sentence in the Shelby County Division of Corrections facility but was incarcerated two weeks later in Mississippi where he is currently serving time. Abolitionist and journalist Jared Ware joins the Beyond Prisons podcast for a conversation on deteriorating abusive conditions within South Carolina prisons. Jared gives us an update on recent organizing efforts by prisoners in South Carolina and their comrades on the outside, who delivered a demand letter to UN offices in the United States, Carribean, and United Kingdom last month. They argue the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) is violating international standards for confinement known as The Mandela Standards. We discuss the last several years of prisoner-led organizing to call attention to horrendous abuses. This includes intense restrictions on prisoners in general population within higher-security prisons, such as metal plates placed on windows, meal slots on the doors, heavy limitations on movement, and little-to-no programming or recreation. We also touch on the disgusting, absurd games and propaganda wars SCDC engages in, including collaborations with nonprofits that serve to whitewash the department of corrections conduct and the conditions in which they force people to live. Author Michelle Balconi joins Dave at Whiskey Politics to discuss how we talk to our kids about economics. Schools no longer teach free-enterprise or economics as most adults learned it. Michelle is the co-author of the new book (soon to be a series) Let's Chat About Economics, written for kids with famed Reagan Economist Dr. Arthur Laffer.Be sure to subscribe to Whiskey Politics at YouTube and our audio podcasts at iTunes, Stitcher or GooglePlay where your 5-star rating would be appreciated as it will help get the word out about our fledgling production (iTunes especially!)
