Join us as we welcome the remarkable Valerie De La Garza, a trailblazing Latina and the pioneering CEO of Fenton, a social justice and impact PR agency. Valerie shares her compelling journey from the working-class neighborhoods of Southeast Los Angeles to becoming a beacon of leadership in the communications field. Her narrative, deeply rooted in her 11th generation Chicana heritage, sheds light on the racial, economic, and educational disparities that have fueled her commitment to social change. In this episode, we discuss the C-Suite and Boardroom representation when it comes to looking for Latinos and Latinas outside our familiar networks. This discussion serves as a call to action for bravery in stepping out of comfort zones, confronting the often risk-averse nature of organizations, and dismantling the cycle of sameness that hampers true diversity, especially within the public relations industry. Rounding off our conversation, we delve into the challenges facing democracy and the responsibilities we all share in advocating for social justice. Valerie brings her insights on the legacy of Unidos and the significance of representation and voting rights in today's complex political landscape. Furthermore, we reflect on the success of initiatives like Homeboy Industries and the transformative power of storytelling and community action. I am especially grateful to have Valerie share her experience from the board of Homeboy Industries, illustrating the monumental shift from intentions to actions that can reshape communities globally. Jen Martín was born and raised in Southeast Los Angeles.  At the age of 12, while watching the technicolor classic Auntie Mame (1958), Jen realized the limitless stories that can be told through costume design.  Jen's endless curiosity has led to immersion in music subcultures, art history, Almodovar films, and has traveled to Europe, Asia, and extensively throughout Latin America.  All of these experiences have fed into her unique worldview and eclectic style. While studying sewing and garment construction in college, Jen successfully began her own online vintage clothing shop. She has shared her ability to date any garment at a glance through her work as a 705 Union Costumer on period films including Carol, Dunkirk, Vice, Hairspray Live, Lovecraft Country and Blonde. Some of Jen's own contemporary costume design projects include those for Netflix, HBO, BET, Dazed Digital and Nowness, with several going on to showcase at Cannes and Sundance Film Festival.

As a Chicanita from a big Mexican family, I found great joy in reading and retreating into the pages of books. I remember my sisters and I walking to the tiny Maywood Library (now called the Maywood Cesar Chavez Library) in Southeast Los Angeles and checking books out. But the truth is that I had never seen myself, my family, or my experiences reflected in text until a mentor in high school gave me a copy of Sandra Cisneros's House on Mango Street. Reading that book became a defining moment for me. For the first time, I finally felt seen and validated. Cisneros's stories echoed through my mind and planted a seed of hope. I nurtured that seed in college by writing and reading books and poetry by women of color. I devoured every book I could get my hands on and often read for pleasure rather than the required reading for my courses. (Don't worry, I still graduated.) When the pandemic began, I took up crocheting and gardening like most people. I then realized that there is no time like the present to make our dreams come true. To nurture those parts of ourselves that do not want to die, that do not want to shrivel up into hard rocks of bitterness. I realized que si no ahora, entonces cuando? The only person in my way was me. These poems were born out of a desire to share my stories and the words that keep me up at night. The words that burst out of me, accompany me on walks, and come to me through the voices of my beloved familia. They come as whispers, as shouts, and from the words that were never uttered by my departed loved ones. These words come from all the women's voices who must stay silent to survive. They come from the little girl who dreams of seeing her name and words on the spine of a book in the library. The beauty is in the process, in the grays, the in-between that children of immigrants feel. The taste of English and Spanish on the tongue. Of hot dogs, tortillas, and weenie con huevo, too. These poems are an offering from my soul to yours, and I thank you for supporting a dream. I hope you are inspired, annoyed, amused, and most of all, I hope that you nurture your dreams. Through my collection, This Poem Might Save You (Me), I invite you to take a journey with me.

Consisting of 8 cities (Bell, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Cudahy, Huntington Park, Maywood, South Gate and Vernon), and roughly 440,000 residents (90% identifying as Latinx), stretching along the 710 freeway, Southeast Los Angeles has been one of the hardest hit by COVID-19, as many of its residents being the essential workers of our region. Prior to COVID-19, Southeast LA has long faced environmental challenges, given its location adjacent to a major freeway; has had less access to green space than the rest of the county; and have less access to grocery stores and fresh produce. As South Gate Councilmember Denise Diaz has noted, “We are the doughnut hole of LA County. Funding tends to go to our neighboring cities and not here.” Founded on the belief that “community problems must be solved by the community itself,” CivitasLA is pleased to be joined by Andy Carrasco, VP, SoCalGas and Emma Hernandez, Chief Executive Officer, of Southeast Community Development Corp. (SCDC) two civic leaders working to elevate the collective voice of the Southeast LA region. Growing up in Southeast Los Angeles, Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley never thought that the struggles he had faced and overcome in his youth would bring him on a path to leading the largest college system in the country. As the 2021 recipient of the Diverse Champions Award, Oakley joins us in this episode to talk about his approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in higher education. Oakley also discusses the current impact COVID-19 has had on community college students, his hopes for the future of higher education, and the accomplishments he is most proud of. So join in the conversation and take a glimpse into the heart and mind that Oakley leads from.    KEY POINTS / MAIN TAKEAWAYS: The challenges facing first-generation students.   How COVID-19 has amplified these challenges.  Why is there a decline in community college enrollment amidst the pandemic? Strategies to support vulnerable students on their path to completion.  Goals and aspirations for the future of diversity in higher education.  Thoughts and advice on leadership, policies, and championing diversity issues.    QUOTABLES: “I would hope that at some point the kind of work that we're talking about here is done by everyone in every organization and there is no need to highlight individuals who are lifting up diversity, equity, and inclusion.” “That's what informs me every single day that I come to work in this job: knowing that there are thousands of neighborhoods throughout the country and families throughout the country that still see higher education as something for somebody else, not for them.” “If we use this pandemic as another excuse to leave a generation of students behind, then it's going to come back to haunt us a hundredfold.”   PRODUCTS / RESOURCES: Eloy Ortiz Oakley to receive the 2021 Diverse Champions Award - read the article here: https://diverseeducation.com/article/204699/ Visit the Diverse: Issues in Higher Education website: https://diverseeducation.com/ Or follow us on social media:  Twitter: https://twitter.com/diverseissues Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/diverseissuesinhighereducation Facebook: https://web.facebook.com/DiverseJobs?_rdc=1&_rdr Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/diverse-issues-in-higher-education/ In The Margins is produced by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education and edited by Instapodcasts (visit at www.instapodcasts.com)

For today’s bonus episode, we’re talking with writer/director Eric Amadio—if you’ve not heard of him, you’ve likely seen his show SNOWFALL on FX, or at least spotted the billboards around the town. His fascinating story takes all kinds of unexpected turns---from writing haikus as a child to getting published at 10 years old, from electronic music producer to rapper to director, and now show creator---Eric has worn many hats and has accumulated some fascinating perspective along the way.  We take a deep dive into how his process works, how he writes and manages his approach to production, and what he’s observed about creativity in our rapidly changing modern culture. He is motivating and inspiring, and whether you’re an actor, writer, or director, his insight will lead to some pretty powerful revelations about story structure, character, inspiration, and patience! Eric Amadio is a writer, director, and producer, known for Snowfall (2017), After Sex (2007) and Stuntmen (2009). Born in Southeast Los Angeles and raised during the height of violence in the crack-fueled 80's and 90's, Eric had his first essay published at the age of 10, went on to write for local music publication Rock City News at 16, then worked as an electronic music producer/DJ from ages 18-23 before beginning his career in film and television. Deeply rooted in Los Angeles, his grandfather opened one of the first Italian/American owned photo studios in Downtown LA in the 1940's, his mother grew up in the middle of the 1950's car-culture in Bell, and Eric's formative years were spent immersed in the various 80's/90's subcultures of hip hop, skateboarding, basketball, and crime, all elements that can be found in his work.
