Melissa Luci from Alexander Valley Hops and Fal Allen of Anderson Valley Brewing Co. visit Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras. Fal Allen has been on the show many times, the last time was this May 13, 2021 episode. It is hop harvest season right now, as Melissa describes. Hops grow as long vines and need tall poles and wires to climb. A field of hops looks like a plantation of telephone poles. Hops were grown from the late 1800s to about 1950 when the price collapsed. Alexander Valley Hops started in 2019 on a very long and skinny lot. They have an active Instagram page. The hops grow up poles that are 18-20 feet high. There is a top wire at that height. They want the plant (called bines) to reach that height by the summer solstice. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. The Lost Coast Fresh Hops Festival On Saturday, October 14, from 2-8 PM is the Lost Coast Fresh Hops Festival, in Shelter Cove, CA. Here is their link on Brown Paper Tickets. All of the breweries up there have made a beer out of Alexander Valley Hop Farm's Chinook hops which thlost cey will open at the festival. For fresh hops, they need about 100 lbs for an 8 barrel batch. They try to use them within 24 hours. They give flavor and aroma that is very green, something that you can't get with dry hops. Mad River Brewing is one of the sponsoring breweries. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Fal Allen has brought a bunch of Anderson Valley Brewing Co. beers. A lot of people were IPA obsessed for a few years, and that pendulum seems to be swinging back, so Pilsners are more and more popular now. They are tasting a Russian River Brewing Co. Hop Time Pale Ale which is made with fresh local hops, once a year at hop harvest. AVBC is also participating in a cooperative brewing project to benefit Maui. One is called Salted Caramel Porter. It's a 9.5% ABV beer that Fal describes as a dessert beer. If you like espresso and chocolate, you may like it. Herlinda travels a lot and she will be in New York, Lithuania then Singapore. Alexander Valley Hops served 16 breweries this year, the most ever for them.

California surfer kicked at shark’s head, survives attack

A 31-year-old surfer in Northern California is recovering after a shark attack that left gruesome bites on his right thigh and leg. Jared Trainor was unclear whether a seal or shark had knocked him off his board during a Sunday outing to Centerville Beach, he told the Times-Standard newspaper in Humboldt County. The animal had his right leg and his board clamped in its jaws, he said. Underwater, the experienced surfer grabbed the attacker's body with one hand and kicked at its head with his free leg until it let him go and swam away, he said. Trainor returned to the beach where another surfer had a cell phone they used to call for help. “I don't remember the initial contact,” he told the newspaper. “It kind of happened so quickly.” Surgeons stapled shut his open wounds, which spanned nearly 19 inches (48 centimeters) or the length of the shark's mouth. Photos of a recovering Trainor and his wounded leg are posted at the Instagram account of The Shop, a surf shop in Arcata. His sister, Haley Martino, said in a GoFundMe fundraising post that her brother was bitten by a great white shark. Humboldt County has had 16 shark attacks since 1960, according to a 2017 news article in The Sacramento Bee. In 2020, a kayaker narrowly escaped a great white shark in Humboldt County's Shelter Cove. The Ferndale Volunteer Fire Department confirmed in a social media post that the bite was from a shark. “To our recollection of our membership, we have not had an incident like this. This is a reminder that there are many hazards to be aware of when you are at the beach,” the department said in its post. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

December 1, 2020 — Last week, retired sheriff Tom Allman announced on Facebook that he would start serving as a peace officer in Humboldt County, where he was born and raised. The Humboldt County sheriff, William Honsal, wrote in his own statement that Allman would end a nearly decade-long vacancy in the Lost Coast Resident Deputy position, which includes the Shelter Cove, Whitethorn and Mattole Valley communities. Honsal added that Allman will spend about four days a week on the Lost Coast, with deputies from the Garberville substation providing coverage on the days that he is not assigned. The resident deputy position is funded through the county’s Measure Z public safety sales tax. Allman was sworn in today at 11am at the fire station in Shelter Cove. Because of the pandemic, the public was not invited to participate in person. The event was livestreamed on the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Facebook page. Lauren Schmitt, of KMUD news, interviewed Justin Robbins, the general manager of Shelter Cove’s resort improvement district number one about his thoughts on the new resident deputy.

As she says, “Budget doesn’t mean cheap. It’s smart!” She has also been featured in print and online markets, and on podcast. You can follow her adventures on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest.   Karen is originally from Ohio but now lives in North Carolina and has been visited Hilton Head fifteen times. She travels with her husband, two sons and one daughter. We talk about why Hilton Head is great for families, what it is like to visit, what the beaches are like, what there is to do and Karen's favorite places to stay and eat. What to Do If families want some time off the beach, there is plenty to do include paddle boarding, kayaking, and biking. Karen especially enjoys going to Pickney Island Nature Preserve with its wildlife, sea creatures and walking trails. Families on a budget can take advantage of the many city parks that are free and offer great family entertainment. Hilton Head is laid back and low key -- no neon or typical beach scene. Where to Stay Families visiting Hilton Head would fly into Savannah, Georgia, just 45 minutes away. It is also not far off of Interstate 95. Families should plan on spending at least four days, but a week is ideal. There are three main areas to stay in Hilton Head: the Sea Pines Resort, where the big golf course is; Palmetto Dunes, which is the ocean front area that is great for beach lovers; and Disney's Hilton Head Resort that is Shelter Cove. Since it is more protected there, you will find stand up paddle boarding and other activities in this area. Karen recommends the Disney Hilton Head Resort for families. There are also many vacation condominiums available for rent that are perfect for families that want the space and comforts of home.  Where to Eat One Hot Mama's features BBQ and low country food from the Next Food Network Star. Karen also loves the pizza at Mangiamo because she is a big Ohio sports fan and has found that all the Buckeye fans seem to congregate there. Best Place to Take a Family Photo in Hilton Head Karen suggests posing on a live oak tree branch at Coligny Beach for an ideal family photo. Perfect for holiday cards!   You can learn more about Karen's recommendations for Hilton Head over on Family Travels on a Budget including: Hilton Head by the numbers -- What it costs off season  Why Hilton Head is great for families -- and a map of the island Five reasons to vacation at Hilton Head Favorite Travel Gear Karen loves her little black dress from J. Jill for its comfort and style. Tip of the Week Kim recommends bringing a small bottle of baby powder for your next trip to the beach, as it is perfect for getting sticky sand off your body. She also found a fun product at Beaches called the Powder Pouch, which works the same way. Mentioned on the Podcast Alabama Beaches are Calling!
