As the '90s became the 2000s, two bubbly teenagers came seemingly out of nowhere to score back-to-back top 5 singles, "Sister" and "What's A Girl To Do", but Christine and Sharon Muscat had been preparing for that moment for years. First, growing up with their musician father, Joe, helping them to develop their talents and then, being spotted by Tina Arena on TV and signed by her then-husband/manager, Ralph Carr. Sister2Sister were quickly launched overseas, with UK chart success and key support slots on tours by Five and Britney Spears. But the pop stardom ended just as suddenly and a planned (and recorded) second album was never released. The sisters talk about the decisions they made following the release of their debut album, One, that changed the course of their joint career. Over the past two decades, the siblings have worked in a more behind-the-scenes capacity as session singers, backing vocalists and vocal coaches, but they are set to release their first music as Sister2Sister in two decades and explain why they feel lucky to have had the experience in the music industry that they've had.

Following the fabulous introduction into 2000s Aussie pop divas Vanessa Amorosi and Nikki Webster's careers, this second part of our special celebrates ARIA Award-winning duo Sister2Sister, the talented singer-songwriter Leah Haywood, and vocal powerhouse Joanne. Sister2Sister, made up of sisters Christine and Sharon Muscat, made a splash in Australia and the UK with their hits 'Sister' and 'What's A Girl To Do' in the early 2000s. They weren't just a pair of incredible vocalists but also super engaging live performers who can slay a Y2K popstar choreography! The sisters' success saw them score an ARIA Award and support Britney Spears and 5ive on tour outside Australia, and feature on the Bring It On soundtrack. In the past decade or so, Aussie hit songwriter and producer Leah Haywood has been working behind the scenes in LA on some of our fave bops via Selena Gomez, BLACKPINK, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato and more but we're taking it all the way back to her 2000s popstar debut "Leah", which spawned inescapable bops like 'We Think It's Love', 'Takin' Back What's Mine' and 'Summer of Love'. With Leah now thankfully back in the spotlight as an artist after two decades, releasing top-tier material under the pseudonym Haywood, it feels right to go back to her 2000s efforts and celebrate her journey. The final artist on our two-part 2000s Aussie Pop special is Joanne, a real vocal powerhouse and long-lost Young Diva member, in our humble opinion. Big soul diva vocals with camp, Y2K disco-pop production and dance bangers - everything about Joanne's discography is a maximalist 'girls night out' experience packed with sass and handbags-on-the-floor moments, from the signature late 90s banger 'Jackie' through to 'So Damn Fine', 'I Don't Know' and 'Busted'. Pamela R Haynes award winning author of Loving The Brothers interviews self published authors from around the world. In this episode meet author Chantel Hall-Reid.Chantel Hall-Reid is an author, mother, educator, and a mentor. As a graduate of Birmingham City University, she earned a BA (Hons) degree in Primary Education and is a lover of all things English &Education. Since graduating Chantel has taught in a range of educational settings. Chantel has more than ten years of teaching & mentoring experience and in 2018 decided to use her passion and expertise to form her own English tuition business, it was also during this year that Chantel set up another business offering support to educational establishments in a bid to increase their students learning experience. Chantel is a Co-founder and Director of Sister2Sister C.I.C, a social enterprise supporting young females through empowerment and confidence building programmes. With all these projects under her belt, it’s clear to see that she’s not afraid of hard work and has a passion for young people. This further confirms why Sister2Sister made the finals of the Great British Entrepreneur Award 2020, for the entrepreneurial spirit award category. When it comes to supporting young people, this is where Chantel truly feels at ease. Chantel has just finished writing her first book “Imani’s Diary” which she hopes will be the first of many. Chantel’s inspirations include just about everything; books she read, 90s music which she still adores! and her love of travel. But mostly; her inspiration for this novel came from life experiences, her teaching days, working with young girls as well as social observations. Publishing a book has been a lifelong goal for Chantel and she’s tremendously proud with the publication of her first novel. Chantel hopes to inspire anyone whose thinking of writing a book, to just get started. INSPIRATION Inspiration for Imani's Diary came from Chantel's passion to support young females. In her business Sister2Sister, Chantel mentors BAME females between the ages of 13-21. Many of the experiences she mentors young teens on are highlighted through Imani's Diary. The book reflects typical situations and scenarios that teenage girls go through. Imani is just a regular girl growing up with her family in the 90s. On the surface, Imani seems to enjoy her teenage years, but she longs for acceptance, commitment, and security. Even though she uncovers fake friendships, family secrets and relationship blunders, she also experiences some teenage highs; late night parties, sleepovers and holding down a boyfriend; or two! Imani’s diary is a quirky, funny, and heartfelt snapshot of trials and tribulations, captured with brutal honesty. The book is great for parents to perhaps get insight into what their teen daughters may be getting up to and how to support them, it is also useful for women who grew up in the 90s in the sense that they can reflect on some of the experiences they went through, and perhaps start to unpick them and realise that others too shared those experiences. Music, food, and travel have all shaped the book; as well as Imani's witty one liners that bring humour, Chantel opted for a light-hearted tone to the book. Chantel has chosen this tone to reflect how easy it is for teens to hide behind cheekiness to mask the real pain and frustration they may be feeling, something she has observed first-hand through delivering her Empowerment Programmes to girls in inner city schools. Its's also a humorous, 90's nostalgic throwback, the main themes in the book are in and around teens growth and experiences. At the time of writing current affairs such as the Pandemic, Black lives Matter, George Floyd and the death of Breana Taylor were prevalent in the media, Chantel wanted to write something more light-hearted and humorous. Competition closes at 5pm GMT on Friday.
During the Covid-19 Pandemic 2020 Chantel, Kanika, and Dionne were inspired by the ‘Miracle Morning’ by Hal Elrod to reassess their values and to create an extraordinary life for themselves and others. They write:"Our Big Sister Programme supports young people in visualising and vocalising their dreams and aspirations. We offer practical strategies to positively change attitudes and behaviours to achieve transformation in the areas which have presented as challenging for them. We provide a bespoke programme which builds upon what the young person recognises as good about themselves. Our approach is always positive. Mentoring isn’t just about talking. We work on building life skills, confidence in social settings, resilience and overcoming difficulties plus so much more. Our programme empowers young people to develop positive peer relationships, deal with peer pressure, and focus more on their own feelings of self-worth."A young BAME female lacking aspiration can have a devastating impact upon their future and social positioning, which in turn may affect generation after generation. Sister2Sister want to break down boundaries, which is why they decided to create an opportunity for young women to cultivate their self-esteem, develop their confidence and become visionaries; because they know that young women who have confidence along with positive role models who believe in their abilities and skills are unstoppable. The directors have a passion for personal development and growth. For several years, theye have explored a variety of personal development theories and coaching and mentoring techniques. They want to share these and utilise their experiences to serve the community that has helped shape the women that they have become.Questions to ask 13-21 year olds:Are you going through a lot of changes at the moment? Are your studies and education starting to feel overwhelming?Do you feel as though you don’t fit in with your ‘friends’ or ‘family’?Do you feel lonely sometimes? Are you concerned about your next steps?Do you sometimes lack motivation?Do you need support with your goals and aspirations?Do you wish you had someone to talk to who won’t judge you?Being mentored is like having a friend who looks out for you.
