We're in the midst of unprecedented times, where corporations prioritize short-term profits over the long-term health of their organizations, clients, and employees. Wage and wealth gaps grow ever-larger, and a few billionaires hoard an obscene amount of money while more and more people struggle just to get by. The upcoming book Fair Shake: Women and the Fight to Build a Just Economy, which my guest June Carbone co-authored with Naomi Cahn and Nancy Levit, explores the history, politics, and legality of how we got to where we are today, the impact this system has on women and the quest for gender equality, and the efforts being made to reverse these trends. Explore what past and present corporate research can teach us about where we're headed:Where did our winner-take-all economy come from? How does this profits-first, people-last approach impact women? What is the triple bind befalling women leaders today? How do we start rebuilding a positive-sum economic culture of collectivism?Related Links:Pre-order ‘Fair Shake: Women and the Fight to Build a Just Economy' - https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/fair-shake-naomi-cahn/1141652296?ean=9781982115128Banks with More Women on Their Boards Commit Less Fraud - https://hbr.org/2021/05/banks-with-more-women-on-their-boards-commit-less-fraudThe Nasdaq Stock Market LLC; Notice of Filing of Proposed Rule Change to AdoptListing Rules Related to Board Diversity - https://www.sec.gov/comments/sr-nasdaq-2020-081/srnasdaq2020081-8186013-227180.pdfConnect with June online - https://law.umn.edu/profiles/june-carboneEpisode 440: The Problem with Self-Help - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode440Episode 444: Are Pay Transparency Laws Working? - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode444Take Action with Bossed Up - https://www.bossedup.org/takeactionBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/

Nancy's Do The Thing Retreat On Cape Cod: Early Bird pricing ends soon so learn more and **apply here.** Let's talk power skills, Podsters. We used to call collaboration, empathizing, and advocating for others “soft skills”. And this never sat very well with us. These “soft skills” are what makes a great leader and more often than not – “soft skills” is a term used when discussing the skills that women bring to the table. Soft. Really? Collaborating, empathizing, and advocating for others are 100 percent your power skills. Power. Not soft. Human connection has never been more important. A leader with conflict resolution, empathy, and creativity is highly sought after. Emotional Intelligence is highly valued when choosing who will lead a company, organization, or team. (More on emotional intelligence in an upcoming episode). Women are inherently better negotiators. We're hard-wired to seek a resolution, advocate for others, and create a win-win situation. This is scientifically proven. Despite this, women do not have the same success as men when negotiating. Many women are coached or told to “be tough”, and “act like a man"; which actually backfires because they're not being their authentic selves. By doing this women are perceived as too aggressive or cutthroat. Remember, professional doesn't always mean tough. It's about finding your authentic self and recognizing your strengths. Don't be afraid to be vulnerable and embrace your emotional intelligence. This superpower will take you far both personally and professionally. What are your power skills? Fall is almost here, and we're ready to kick it into high gear. Get ready for some powerful topics and game-changing guests. Let us know what you want to hear, and we'll make it happen! My Guest on Memoirs of Success Women today is Dr. Adama Kalokoh. Her parents instilled in her a deep sense of pride and appreciation for their Sierra Leonean heritage. and she hopes her mission will inspire other descendants of Africa to embrace their culture and positively impact their home country. Dr. Kalokoh completed her undergraduate studies majoring in Public Health and her leadership led her to reach thousands of marginalized people at soup kitchens, shelters, and schools in the DC area. But her passion for Sierra Leone became a driving force. This deep appreciation led Adama to finally visit Sierra Leone in 2003, followed by three consecutive visits. Her passion for helping others and devotion to service has elevated her to serve on many board groups impacting Sierra Leone. She is the Founder of Impact Sierra Leone, an organization founded to reduce socioeconomic challenges in Sierra Leone through empowerment, education, and building strong partnerships with the Diaspora community. Due to her experience of volunteerism, she felt a great sense of responsibility and inspiration to become an Ambassador and Agent-of-change for young girls and women in Sierra Leone. She chose, as primary focus, to help support women and girls in rural areas because of their huge lack of resources and access to services. Her current efforts include directly supporting the Foindu Village community located in rural Sierra Leone with educational tools, clothes donations, and support for farming activities. She launched the Seeds of Life project in March 2019 to combat hunger amongst primary school children in the village. She has committed herself to promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within her organization and doing her part to reduce poverty. Using her passion for public health, she launched the Seeds of Life project to help over 250 primary school children access fruits and vegetables and learn about wellness. She has been honored and received recognition in Sierra Leone and the U.S as the Yonibana Brand Ambassador, Female Empowerment Entrepreneur, 2019 Yoni Excellence Diasporan of the Year, 2019 DDEA Humanitarian Recipient, chosen as a 2019 Global Goodwill Ambassador, was among the Top 100 Recognized Human Rights Defenders in the United Nations 2019 Almanac. The stereotype in the entrepreneurial world is that women are too risk averse to lead companies. But is that true? Kim Chakanetsa talks to two women who turned their start-ups into successful enterprises. Linh Thai is one of Vietnam's top female entrepreneurs. She was brought up in the USA, after her mother fled their war-torn home country with Linh and her sister, who died during the journey. Her mum's leap of faith inspired Linh to move back to Vietnam and become an entrepreneur. She is now a co-star on the investment reality show Shark Tank Vietnam and founder of TVL Group, a workplace skills training company focused on early- and mid-career professionals. Monica Musonda is a Zambian lawyer who decided to quit her high-flying corporate career to start her own company. She's now the CEO of Java Foods, a food processing company providing affordable nutrition to the southern African market. She is one of the few Zambian women involved in manufacturing and agro-processing and she is a member of the UN Lead Group of the Scaling Up Nutrition Movement. Produced by Alice Gioia

Kearn Cherry was born in Mississippi and lives there to this day. Her husband was in the military and they lived in many different countries and states. One of the countries they stayed for 5 years was in Germany. Kearn was wanting to finish nursing school but never finished. After a decade both Kearn and her husband made the commitment to go back to school for nursing in Arizona. They drove an hour and half, back and forth, everyday for a year. When their plans did not work in the nursing field, they went to classes for occupational therapy. They had 3 kids, all under the age of 10, and they both worked so hard to get to where they wanted to go. This was a very tough time for both of them and they had to make many sacrifices. Even though thiswas a tough time for them and their children, it also helped them all to build an attitude of resilience and helped to bring their children closer together. At the end of the day, their children are all very successful and have a work-hard drive that theylearned from Kearn and her husband. They never thought about asking for help from their family. They did everything by themselves. Even though this was a hard thing for them to do, it strengthened their marriage and their personal growth. It made them realize that they are dependent on each other. Kearn's mother later offered to have their kids live with her for a while until Kearn and her husband were finished with their schooling. This really did help them during that time. When they were done they decided to move to Florida, but when they went to pick up the kids in their home town in Mississippi and ended up staying there. This is where they started their home care business. They have been running this business for 24 years now. Recently Kearn started to plan conferences and events years ago and saw there was a need for this. She really enjoys planning these, especially women's conferences. She has been on many boards for different conferences and events. She helped other companies run their own conferences and events, but she also ran her own conferences for different reasons...one was for her care business for the elderly. Her and her partner were talking one day and came up with an idea to start a woman's conference. The Success Women's Conference was born. They have been doing this for years. They have really grown and now have anywhere from 11k-17k attendees. In 2020, Kearn was told by God that she needed to continue to run her own events and to write anthologies. This is where her two biggest events came to be -“Level Up” and “Power Up”. With the pandemic, it was hard to have them live but this didn't hinder the conferences. They were a major success even virtually. They were both very new for her. Kearn learned so much from both of them. She was very intimated by it in the beginning. She just wasn't getting anything from other conferences. She was also called to write anthology books, which was tough for her because writing is not a strong suit for Kearn. However, she stepped out on faith and did what she was called to do.In 2019 she wrote her first book, “Trailblazers Who Lead.” This was not something that came easily for Kearn but she pushed and did it. For her second book, she had other authors and other women write their stories, which became the second anthology, “Make it Happen."

Listen as Rima interviews Dana Bristol-Smith about the idea that woke her up in the night to give a voice to women. In January 2008, Dana started the Leap to Success’ Women’s Leadership program as a volunteer project to test an innovative professional development program she designed with domestic violence survivors. Because of the success of the initial program and the thrill of seeing women transform themselves and their lives, Dana has made it her mission to expand Leap to Success to provide transformational programs to women who are overcoming adversity across the country. https://leaptosuccess.org/

Your personal brand plays a huge part in your success. It is attached to your name and often times your name will show up before you do. (That is if you are putting it out there for people to know more about you) This is the best time to connect and build collaborations both online and offline. Working on your success and making an impact can be done on your own but it costs more and takes longer. We are definitely stronger together. Understand that in any business word of mouth marketing is still one of the key ways to build your reputation and revenue. Listening to what your ideal customer needs and wants will always put you in a position to succeed. It will also take authenticity! People can always spot a taker and a giver. In the end, givers will always receive more and come out ahead of the pack. In this episode, Kearn shares her experience as the butts in seats Queen!Kearn dropped nuggets about what it means to show up with a brand that wants to succeed!~ Show up looking like you are ready to succeed ~ Don't just sit and wait for things to happen~ Take your experience and flip it on its head (What can you use from each experience?) ~ Build a brand network Through key conversations, you are able to be seen and heard. Yes, that even includes turning on your camera during a zoom call. Make the most of every encounter and treat social media as a networking meetup. Here are the five tips Kearn shared to help you get a yes for that next speaking opportunity. 1. Always have a bio (short, mini and regular)2. Have a high-resolution headshot 3. Speaker One Sheet is valuable 4. Have a website 5. Videos are great for your brand Oh, and Kearn discussed other key things that she personally looks for when going through the hundreds of speaker applications that she receives for the Power Up Summit and the Success Women's Conference. Always remember that what you bring to the event shout be valuable even before you step on the stage. Promoting, sharing in your community and other small gestures will prove that you are a commodity to the event and event host. Being invited is just part of the equation...you become an ambassador for the event. Meet Kearn Crockett Cherry One thing I discovered while building my health care business for 22 years: Success must be taken!
