Today I have the honor and the pleasure to speak once again with celebrated poet and physician, Fady Joudah. The last time Fady was on the podcast was in November, 2023, shortly after the outbreak of war in Gaza. At that point we spoke about the impossibility of, even then, quantifying the genocide. Today we focus on the politics of language—in particular, the distinction Fady Joudah makes between Palestine in English, and Palestine in Arabic. We speak too of the need for and limitations of solidarity, and finish with a reading and discussion of one of Fady Joudah's most remarkable and stunning poems, “Truth is Never Finished.” Fady Joudah is a Palestinian American physician, poet, and translator. He was born in Austin, Texas, and grew up in Libya and Saudi Arabia. He was educated at the University of Georgia, the Medical College of Georgia, and the University of Texas Health Sciences in Houston. In 2002 and 2005 he worked with Doctors Without Borders in Zambia and Sudan, respectively.Joudah's debut collection of poetry, The Earth in the Attic (2008), won the 2007 Yale Series of Younger Poets competition, chosen by Louise Glück. Joudah followed his second book of poetry, Alight (2013) with Textu (2014), a collection of poems written on a cell phone wherein each piece is exactly 160 characters long. His fourth collection is Footnotes in the Order of Disappearance (2018). In 2014, Joudah was a Guggenheim Fellow in poetry. As critic Charles Bainbridge observed in a 2008 Guardian review of The Earth in the Attic, “Joudah's poetry thrives on dramatic shifts in perspective, on continually challenging received notions.”Joudah translated several collections of Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish's work in The Butterfly's Burden (2006), which won the Banipal prize from the UK and was a finalist for the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation; and in If I Were Another, which won a PEN USA award in 2010. His translation of Ghassan Zaqtan's Like a Straw Bird It Follows Me (2012) won the Griffin International Poetry Prize in 2013. His other translations include Amjad Nasser's Petra: The Concealed Rose and A Map of Signs and Scents.Joudah lives with his family in Houston, where he works as a physician of internal medicine.
A new partnership is helping Minnesotans get their college degrees, if for some reason they couldn't finish. Minneapolis College, St. Paul College and Metro State University are working with a ReUp Education, a national organization that helps reenroll people in college. According to data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, the state of Minnesota has more than 600,000 residents who have some college but no credential.Greg Mellas, dean of Liberal and Fine Arts at St. Paul College, and Katy VanVliet, ReUp Education's senior vice president of Learner Services, joined Minnesota Now to share more about the program.
“I think any man out there that's living out there that might be younger than the age of 30, I don't think they've really felt the brutality of what it takes to survive in the world, right? And the world is not a nice place, as much as we all like to tell each other.”Mental toughness isn't something you're born with—it's something you build, brick by brutal brick. It's about embracing discomfort, pushing past self-imposed limits, and refusing to be the guy who folds under pressure. The difference between success and failure? Discipline, resilience, and a willingness to go all in when others tap out. Whether it's in business, fitness, or life, the men who win are the ones who don't just endure hardship—they seek it out, because they know that steel is forged in fire.Rob Arpa and Nicky Billou dive into the importance of fortifying the mind through physical challenge, discipline, and the right social circles. They discuss the teachings of elite athletes like David Goggins, the necessity of surrounding yourself with high-achievers, and why most men settle for mediocrity when they should be striving for dominance. Their message is clear: if you're not actively strengthening your body and mind, you're getting weaker.Rob Arpa is a seasoned entrepreneur. With a background in business and a relentless drive for self-improvement, he's built a seven-figure company while continually pushing his own limits. His insights into mindset, resilience, and success come from firsthand experience, making him a voice men should listen to—if they're serious about stepping up their game. Also in this episode:“Never Finished” by David Gogginshttps://davidgoggins.com/book/“Can't Hurt Me” by David Gogginshttps://a.co/d/cQ4CDRX“Finish Line Thinking: How to Think and Win Like a Champion” by Nicky Billouhttps://a.co/d/hjA2G5S“Extreme Ownership” by Jocko Willinkhttps://a.co/d/iVVdqWh“Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hillhttps://a.co/d/gR1VwTK“The Missing Secret” by Joe Vitalehttps://a.co/d/8TiuQ9JYou're invited to come to a Sovereign Circle meeting to experience it for yourself. Welcome to a transformative session where we dive deep into the significance of honoring our commitments to ourselves. Here, you'll learn that true discipline doesn't emerge overnight; rather, it's a product of 10,000 commitments, consistently kept. As the old saying goes, "Rome wasn't built in a day." Similarly, an unwavering sense of self-worth is constructed brick by brick, with every commitment we uphold. Why is it crucial to keep the promises we make to ourselves? Each time you stick to a commitment, you send a clear message to your psyche: “I matter. I respect myself enough to follow through.” Over time, these repeated actions lay the foundation for genuine self-respect. Moreover, when you consistently make and maintain these personal commitments, you develop an internal sense of reliability. You become your own rock. Our health is a primary area where these commitments manifest. Deciding to eat healthily, to exercise regularly, or even to maintain mental well-being might seem mundane on the surface. However, every time you follow through on such decisions, you reinforce the idea that you are worth the effort. Such actions not only boost your self-esteem but also cultivate an environment where well-being thrives.Throughout this video, we'll delve into practical strategies to help you:Recognize and prioritize the commitments you make to yourself.Understand the intrinsic link between personal commitments and self-confidence.Cultivate habits that bolster your ability to follow through, even when the going gets tough.Celebrate small victories, understanding that each fulfilled commitment is a step closer to unshakeable self-respect.By the end of this session, you won't just be equipped with theoretical knowledge. You'll possess actionable steps, ready to be implemented, ensuring that you consistently honor the promises you make to yourself. More importantly, you'll come to recognize the monumental shift that arises in self-perception when you become a person who follows through, consistently and unerringly. In conclusion, respecting oneself isn't merely about positive affirmations or self-care routines. It's deeply rooted in the way we treat our personal commitments. Just as we wouldn't break promises made to loved ones, we must grant ourselves the same courtesy. After all, the relationship you have with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship in your life. So, as you journey with us through this video, remember: to truly respect yourself is to uphold each commitment, to see each promise through, and to build a life where discipline and self-confidence intertwine seamlessly.Join us on this enlightening journey and discover the unparalleled power of commitments. Remember, the road to unshakeable self-confidence begins with a single promise kept to oneself. And from there, it's a journey of 10,000 more. Barton sits down with David to talk about his path as an athlete, father, and fitness instructor. David has completed 17 Ironman Triathlons including the World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. They have taught David about discipline, mindset, focusing on the "controllables" and much more. He is also 5 ½ years sober and so much of who he is and what he prioritized today comes from his sobriety and being the best father he can be for his two teenage kids. Behind his exterior of muscles and a big smile, Austin local David Garza is just as compassionate at heart as he lets on. As one of Austin's most motivated fitness instructors, Garza gladly admits to spending time surfing Pinterest for motivating quotes to share with others. Referred to as the “Tony Robbins of spin” by some of his clients, Garza cherishes being able to make others feel special, whether that's by playing someone's favorite song during a class or sitting down with someone for coffee to help them tackle the obstacles in their way to a healthier lifestyle. “I have been pretty blessed to have found this career, where I can use music and fitness and really talk in a deep way of how we are doing,” Garza says. “And, because I have gone through some ridiculously challenging things in my life, I am able to look at somebody and say ‘Hey man, I get it. Let's try and figure out what's going wrong, pinpoint it and see what we can do in a positive way to figure out what we need to get done to get you out of this funk.'”When Garza came out of college, his lifestyle included smoking and drinking, and at one point, he even weighed close to 300 pounds. Coming up on four years of being sober, Garza says he can consider his past experiences struggling with nutrition and unhealthy habits as a blessing, because they make it easy for him to be able to discuss topics that can typically be hard to talk about. “I get to share with a lot of people who are struggling, and I have been down that path, and I feel like I can truly relate to somebody struggling with lots of different things,” Garza says. “While I know there are a lot of challenges out there, I also know that you can overcome those challenges, because you want to be a little bit better than you were yesterday.”Garza is heading to Nice, France in September to compete in another Ironman Triathlon World Championships. To contact David, find him on Instagram @davidgarza1He is currently teaching classes at HIT Athletic in North Central AuUse this link to get a 30 minute discovery call scheduled with Barton if you're interested in his 12 week coaching course. https://calendly.com/bartbryan/30minFor more information about Iron Neck products and to receive a 15% discount on your order, use this link -> https://bit.ly/46ZmUhKTo get the Free weekly workout PDF, just email Barton: Barton@bartonguybryan.comTo hire Barton for a Speaking Event, Click here: https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fcalendly.com%2Fbartbryan%2F30-minute-meeting-clone&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AOvVaw2a_wCbF6yDMtR_5pNdIg4PBarton on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bartonguybryan/Podcast Website is: https://www.podpage.com/the-mindset-forge-podcast/Become a Patreon Sponsor of the podcast for extra cool stuff including a Free weekly workout program by clicking here - https://themindsetforge.supercast.com/v1?

Inspired by David Goggins' book "Never Finished," I want to remind you to get uncomfortable and endure the daily challenges to reach your financial goals. To achieve this, I challenge you to go beyond the 5% or 10% of your standard discomfort level and strive for 100%. This requires bold moves, consistent action, and living unapologetically. Successful entrepreneurs invest the majority of their assets in risky ventures and repeatedly step out of their comfort zones because that's where true happiness and fulfillment lie. I encourage you to embrace discomfort, challenge yourself, and ambitiously pursue your financial dreams. IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT: - Advice for challenging the status quo of financial success - The importance of going all-in - My personal experiences with embracing discomfort - How to achieve true happiness and fulfillment from being uncomfortable RESOURCES - Comfort Crisis: Embrace Discomfort to Reclaim Your Wild, Healthy, Happy Self - Never Finished : Unshackle Your Mind And Win The War Within - Text ROUNDTABLE to 310-421-0416 to get information on our next roundtable event CONNECT WITH CHRIS Follow me: @chriswharder Visit my website: chrisharder.me Learn more about frello, my peer-to-peer lending app: frelloapp.com Follow frello: @frello_app

This week we're diving into the importance of language and the power of commitment. Tarik invited me to join him on his podcast to discuss my experience with the 75 Hard Challenge and how I committed to executing it without turning back. We talked about the initial doubts and difficult moments, and how the structured routine can actually improve your personal and professional life.Tarik highlighted the idea that these challenging moments are actually opportunities for growth rather than dark places. I compared that to David Goggins' book, "Never Finished," where Goggins speaks about turning dark places into opportunities and discovering the light at the end of the tunnel. We both agreed that embracing this is the secret sauce for self-improvement and personal growth. But we also had to acknowledge that the journey wasn't always easy, thinking back to the late-night freezing outdoor workouts in pouring rain. This was a great reminder that embracing life's challenges and committing to consistent growth can lead to huge results in our lives. So remember, the journey to success begins with taking that first step, so stay inspired, stay determined, and as always…enjoy your first sip!Connect with Tarik on IG, YouTube, and check out his website!--------------------------------Follow the podcast on:InstagramTik TokConnect with the host:Dekimbe SmithFor business inquiries & sponsorship opportunities please contact us at:info@firstsip.net or send us a DM on Instagram!

I'm excited about our newest segment, Bring It On with Kevin Lyles. The Bring It On segment will discuss mindset and other non-financial aspects of retirement. In addition to our newest segment, today you'll hear about the books I read in January and listener questions. Learn how to calculate a decreased benefit when retiring early, which accounts to draw from to minimize taxes, how to manage 401Ks through a company transition, and what to consider when choosing a financial advisor. Join me for this episode of Retirement Answer Man to explore the latest issues in retirement and beyond so that you can get ready to rock retirement. The latest books I've been reading In January I had the opportunity to finish reading four books. Most are nonfiction, but I threw a fiction book in for good measure. How to Think Like a Roman Emperor by Donald Robertson - This book is on stoicism and discusses the qualms we have when contemplating our own death and aging. The fear of death and aging can make us fearful, so by bringing that touchy subject out of the shadows, we can embrace the inevitable and live more fully in the moment. Never Finished by David Goggins - Since this book was written by a Navy SEAL, it has some salty language. However, David is a living example of what you people can endure and do. We have capabilities far beyond what we can imagine. The Boys from Biloxi by John Grisham - John Grisham writes formulaic legal thrillers, but his formula works. I enjoyed the history and background that he included of Biloxi, Mississippi. The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter - This is another book about getting outside your comfort zone. Michael Easter completed a monthlong hunt in the Arctic–far outside of his comfort zone. This book was my favorite this month–it will challenge your thinking. Michael explores the idea of stretching yourself by doing something you think may not be possible. If you have any book recommendations for me reply to the 6-Shot Saturday newsletter. Why mindset is so important Mindset is the attitude that you bring to your life and retirement. It drives how you respond to the challenges you face when you're transitioning and living your life. The mindset you bring to those challenges will make all the difference in the world. There is now more data regarding mindset with the science of positive psychology. Science shows that mindset matters and affects not only how you feel but outcomes. People who seek out the bad see more bad things, those who look for the good in the world see things in a more positive light. What to expect from the Bring It On segment In our newest nonfinancial segment, we'll discuss several nonfinancial issues related to retirement: dealing with boredom, losing status, mindset, attitude, aging, identity, gratitude and so much more.
