We're celebrating Women's History Month by discussing some of the best films of the severely underrated Penelope Spheeris, whose filmography is quite something. First up: Spheeris's first feature, The Decline of Western Civilization, an intense, enjoyable, wholly strange documentary about the LA hardcore punk scene in 1979/1980. Even if you're not a punk fan, this is a must-see. We'll be on a brief break next week, but will return the week after to discuss Spheeris's Suburbia (1983), a fictionalized take on the punk lifestyle.
"Wayne's World," a film that transcended its "Saturday Night Live" sketch origins to become a cult classic, encapsulates the early '90s like few other movies do. Directed by Penelope Spheeris and starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey as Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar, respectively, the film is a brilliant blend of humour, music, and a touch of innocence, all wrapped up in a storyline that's both engaging and hilariously absurd. At its core, "Wayne's World" is a story about friendship, dreams, and the pursuit of happiness in the face of corporate influence. Wayne and Garth are two slackers from Aurora, Illinois, who run a public-access television show from Wayne's basement. Their show, also titled "Wayne's World," is a local hit, catching the eye of television producer Benjamin Kane, played with smarmy charm by Rob Lowe. Kane offers to buy the rights to the show, promising fame and fortune. However, as Wayne and Garth soon discover, the road to success is fraught with sellouts, betrayals, and the potential loss of what they value most: their authenticity and creative control. The film is a riot from start to finish, thanks to Myers and Carvey's impeccable chemistry and their characters' endearing goofiness. Wayne's catchphrases, like "Party on!" and "Excellent!", became part of the cultural lexicon, while Garth's shy, awkward demeanour is the perfect foil to Wayne's exuberant personality. Their adventures, or misadventures, are filled with memorable moments, including their encounter with Alice Cooper, the "Bohemian Rhapsody" car scene that revitalised Queen's song, and Wayne's dream sequences that are both bizarre and hilariously offbeat. One of the film's strengths is its self-awareness. "Wayne's World" frequently breaks the fourth wall, with Wayne and Garth directly addressing the audience, making us complicit in their antics. This technique adds a layer of intimacy and immediacy to the film, drawing the viewer deeper into its world. It's a clever device that Spheeris and the writers use to great effect, allowing the film to comment on its own absurdity and the nature of television and film production. The supporting cast adds depth and colour to the film. Tia Carrere's performance as Cassandra, a talented musician and Wayne's love interest, brings a welcome dimension to the story, challenging Wayne to grow and consider his priorities. Her subplot, involving a record deal that's more about image than talent, mirrors Wayne and Garth's struggles with the television industry. Meanwhile, characters like Ed O'Neill's morose donut shop manager and Lara Flynn Boyle's obsessed ex-girlfriend provide additional comedic highlights. However, "Wayne's World" is not just a string of jokes and catchphrases. It's a commentary on the early '90s media landscape, the commodification of grassroots culture, and the eternal struggle between artistic integrity and commercial success. The film's climax, with its multiple endings, underscores the power of choice and the importance of staying true to one's values, even in the face of overwhelming pressure to conform.Technically, the film is a product of its time, with a soundtrack that's a mix of rock anthems and power ballads that perfectly encapsulate the era. The cinematography and editing are straightforward, serving the story without drawing attention away from the characters and their world. It's a testament to Spheeris's direction that the film feels both timeless and distinctly of its time, a snapshot of a cultural moment that continues to resonate with audiences today. In conclusion, "Wayne's World" is more than just a comedy; it's a cultural artifact that captures the zeitgeist of the early '90s with wit, warmth, and a genuine love for its characters and their world. Its appeal lies not just in its humour, but in its heart, its commentary on the media industry, and its celebration of creativity and friendship. As Wayne and Garth would say, "Wayne's World" is not just excellent, it's a party time that continues to charm and entertain audiences, making it a deserving classic in the comedy genre. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew
In this episode we welcome the legendary Penelope Spheeris and invite her to talk us through her extraordinary life and brilliant career. Barney wastes little time in asking the Louisiana-born filmmaker about the shocking traumas of her childhood and teenage years. We hear about her alcoholic mother's multiple marriages and the family's move to Southern California that led to Penelope putting herself through film school before graduating from UCLA. Along with the Saturday Night Live shorts she made with actor/comic Albert Brooks, Penelope talks about the pioneering Rock 'n' Reel production company that made '70s videos for everyone from Funkadelic to Fleetwood Mac. We also learn about her conversion to punk rock via Brendan Mullen's Masque club, where she shot SoCal hardcore bands like X, Fear, the Germs and Black Flag, the footage winding up in 1981's thrilling Decline of Western Civilization. From the first Decline we jump forward seven years to Decline II — and to a discussion of the '80s glam-metal scene that exploded on West Hollywood's Sunset Strip via bands such as W.A.S.P. and Poison. In addition we hear clips from Mat Snow's 1989 audio interview with all-girl quartet Vixen, sparking a discussion of rampant misogyny on the big-hair metal scene. With Decline II: The Metal Years being our guest's de facto passport to directing 1992's enormo-grossing Wayne's World, we ask Spheeris to recall her not-altogether- felicitous experience of working on the hit Saturday Night Live spinoff with Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. We also consider how the week's featured writer "Metal Mike" Saunders bridged the gulf between metal and punk, tracing his maverick career from a 1971 Creem review of Sir Lord Baltimore's Kingdom Come to the 1978 formation of SoCal hardcore band Angry Samoans. After Mark offers quotes from recently-added library pieces about electro-pop duo Erasure, rapper Schoolly D and, yes, Penelope Spheeris, Jasper closes out the episode with remarks on articles about El Paso's At the Drive-In and David Bowie. Many thanks to special guest Penelope Spheeris. Visit her website at penelopespheeris.com. Pieces discussed: The Decline of Western Civilization, Penelope Spheeris: The "Mad Surgeon" of Film, Vixen audio, Sir Lord Baltimore, A Brief Survey of the State of Metal Music Today, Metal Mike Saunders, Angry Samoans, Annie Nightingale, Erasure, Penelope Spheeris interviewed by Richard Harrington, Schoolly D, At the Drive-In and David Bowie.
This week on the show, Transmissions host Jason P. Woodbury joins Penelope Spheeris, director of The Decline of Western Civilization trilogy, The Beverly Hillbillies, Little Rascals, Suburbia, and Wayne's World. Spheeris is the host of Peter and the Acid King, a true crime podcast set in the Los Angeles punk scene of the early ‘80s concerning the unsolved murder of Peter Ivers. A pop culture wunderkind, Ivers was many things at once: an all-star harmonica player who played alongside Little Walter, a pal of Van Dyke Parks who opened for Fleetwood Mac, and a songwriter who wrote music for David Lynch's Eraserhead and artists like Diana Ross and The Pointer Sisters. In the early '80s, he found found notoriety as host of New Wave Theatre, which showcased Bad Religion, Circle Jerks, 45 Grave and the Angry Samoans. Peter and the Acid King explores that epochal cultural era and its violent end. Working with investigator and co-creator Alan Sacks, Spheeris narrates with 10-part series, which is just about to finish its run, with world weary charm and sly understatement, as well as her signature attitude. We watched Penelope Spheeris' shelved (thanks SHARON)1999 documentary about Ozzfest '99. Is it officially part of her 'Decline of Western Civilization' documentary series? We think so. It features Black Sabbath, Slipknot, Rob Zombie, System of a Down, Fear Factory, Deftones, Primus, Slayer and many more. We get to talk Spheeris' career, and of course do a deep dive into Nu Metal. It's long. You're welcome. Or...sorry.

Saturday Night Live has often tried to turn popular sketches into movies. Sometimes this notion works, and sometimes it doesn't. It all started back in 1992 when Mike Myers and Dana Carvey's Wayne and Garth got a big-screen outing in Wayne's World. They took the admittedly thin premise of the sketch - two metalheads have a public access talk show - and ran with it. The film helped kick off Mike Myers' big-screen career and paved the way for a whole slate of SNL movies, including 1993's Coneheads, the barely released It's Pat, Stuart Saves His Family, Superstar, The Ladies Man and A Night at the Roxbury. Of course, none were as big as Wayne's World, but the road to the big screen was not an easy one. Myers clashed with his director Penelope Spheeris and fought over the final cut. None of the behind-the-scenes battles mattered as the movie made over $120 million at the box office, and spawned a far less successful sequel, Wayne's World 2, that Spheeris did not direct. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, we dig into what it took to make the biggest SNL movie ever and how it remains a classic thirty years later.
We all suffer from sorrows in this journey of life and that's why the devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows can offer us consolation and supernatural support. Joan Spheeris shares some of the sorrows that she has suffered in this life and how Our Lady of Sorrows has been a source of help and encouragement for her own journey of faith. The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15. You'll enjoy learning about the 7 sorrows of Our Lady and why she understands our sorrows and can help us to keep trusting in her son and our Lord, Jesus Christ!
Penelope Spheeris' feature-length film debut coming two years after her groundbreaking documentary "The Decline of Western Civilization" covering the Los Angeles punk rock scene. This low budget indie film is the natural evolution of Spheeris' raw and gritty early filmmaking, about a group of teen runaways who randomly find each other to escape their terrible home lives.
Are you getting a burn? Tom and Niallism are joined by Austin TX Scene Historian and Suburbia fan Marc Dautreuil to discuss the 1983 punk teen drama, Suburbia. Directed by Penelope Spheeris, this gritty look at the 1980s LA punk scene has become a cult classic. We take you through it and offer our thoughts on the issues contained within and swap some tales. Music comes from the film's soundtrack and includes D.I, TSOL and the vandals.

Our spotlight on female filmmakers closes with Penelope Spheeris and her Decline of Western Civilization trilogy. Commercially known for her work directing Wayne’s World, Spheeris got her start studying at UCLA and collaborating with comedians Richard Pryor and Albert Brooks on short films in the 1970s. After launching the first music video production company in Los Angeles, she turned her camera to the LA punk scene from 1981 to 1998 for what would become the iconic Decline trilogy. The Decline films were only recently made available for home viewing in 2015 thanks to an incredible restoration by Shout! FactoryCheck out the AJMS Patreon! PATREON.COM/AVERAGEJOESHOW

Pop your Queen tape into the deck and dial up the Next 143 Project to hear us having a ball with this very worthy comedy. Mike Myers and Dana Carvey made Wayne & Garth famous on Saturday Night Live first, but this big-screen blockbuster made them legends. Myers made director Penelope Spheeris want to hurl on many occasions and some of the gags in their movie are rather quaint now. Still, all those laughs! Carvey steals the picture from Myers (who's excellent himself) and everyone else holds their own, with special marks to that Alice Cooper cameo. It is the second film of a trilogy by Spheeris depicting life in Los Angeles at various points in time. The first film, The Decline of Western Civilization, dealt with the punk rock scene during 1979–1980. The third film, The Decline of Western Civilization III, chronicles the gutter punk lifestyle of homeless teenagers in the late 1990s.The film features concert footage and interviews of legendary heavy metal and hard rock bands and artists such as Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Megadeth, Motörhead, Ozzy Osbourne and W.A.S.P. In 1992, Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels attemted to adapt a widely popular sketch from his show into a feature length film. Tapping long-time collaborator Penelope Spheeris to direct Wayne's World, a story about small-time public access celebrities who are given the opportunity to strike big. The merging of absurdist humor and pop culture parody became an immediate success with filmgoers and critics alike and would launch the film careers of stars Mike Myers and Dana Carvey as well as springboard Rob Lowe back into the limelight. But does this film deserve the glory or does it hurl? MovieDude Eric, Kent & Chris turn on the tube to find out. On today's episode, Paco and George discuss the early days of LA's punk rock scene with tech podcaster/writer/founder Peter Rojas. We discuss the influence of college radio to the cult of personality around Darby Crash and pre YouTube digging for clues to the origins of punk. The Decline Movies were a Rosetta stone for many a suburban teen looking for alternatives of expression. Often referred to as a Rock ‘n Roll anthropologist, Penelope Spheeris worked as a waitress at Denny’s and IHOP to put herself through film school. A holder of a UCLA Master of Fine Arts degree in Theater Arts, she worked as a film editor and a cinematographer before forming her own company in 1974. She produced, directed, and edited videos for major bands through the Seventies and Eighties, concluding her music video work with the Grammy nominated, Bohemian Rhapsody video for WAYNE’S WORLD. Spheeris’ feature film debut was the 1979 documentary on the Los Angeles punk scene, THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION which received stunning and unanimous critical praise. The LAPD shut down Hollywood Boulevard and Chief of Police, Daryl Gates wrote a letter demanding the film not be shown again in L.A. Still fascinated with the subject of punk rock, she wrote and directed SURBURBIA, her first narrative film in 1983. It is a disturbing and somewhat prophetic story of rebellious, homeless kids squatting in abandoned houses, trying to make new families, and protecting one another. SUBURBIA won first place at the Chicago Film Festival. Almost 25 years later her documentary, THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION, PART III would eerily mirror the events she scripted in SUBURBIA. All three DECLINE movies plus a disc of extra footage were released as a DVD box set by Shout Factory! in 2015. https://www.shoutfactory.com/film/documentary/the-decline-of-western-civilization-collectionPeter Rojas created a few different sites, including Gizmodo (now part of Gawker Media), Engadget (now part of AOL), Joystiq (now part of AOL), RCRD LBL (joint venture with Downtown Music), and gdgt (now part of AOL). This week on Alcohollywood, improv-esario Pat Niday joins us to talk 1994’s strangely modern reboot of The Little Rascals! Directed by Wayne’s World’s Penelope Spheeris, The Little Rascals takes place in a bizarre world where the idiosyncratic group of 30s delinquents somehow also grew up and were socialized in modern-day Los Angeles, and cause all manner of mayhem while also sort-of having parents? It’s all a bit confusing, and the terrible kid actors do little to help the matter; still, we’ve got a custom cocktail and drinking rules to help you navigate this very strange beast! When I asked Chris Spheeris if he wanted to do a show with me, he said "I'd love to have a party with you and the listeners" - so you're invited to the party :D Here is Chris info: World Renown Musician - Won an Emmy last year for the Album titled Maya. Chris is conducting Inspirational seminars and workshops - Chris says: Music and all creation is the mirror of God. Performance exhibits the excellence and vulnerability of being human. I open up and never really know if I am to be a vehicle for brilliance or mediocrity. I like to think that I accept both with humility and grace.
