Rockapella is an American a cappella musical group formed in 1986 in New York City. The group's name is a portmanteau of "rock" and "a cappella". Rockapella sings original vocal music and a cappella versions of other songs. Over time, their sound has evolved from high-energy pop and world music style toward a sound more influenced by R&B. Rockapella found their early and enduring success in Japan. They are most successful for their role as a house band and comedy troupe on the PBS children's geography game show Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?. In addition to three compilation albums in Japan, Rockapella has released 19 albums in the US and Japan. Since the band's vocal percussionist was hired, the line "All sounds provided by the voices and appendages of Rockapella" has been printed on each of their CDs. After Growing Pains, he appeared in the film Milk and Fashion, in commercials for McDonald's "Dollar Menunaires" promotion shot as a parody of the VH1 series Best Week Ever, and as the star of the 1990 Hanukah episode of Shalom Sesame (an Israeli version of Sesame Street).[1] He has also been spotted in Boys and Girls Guide To Getting Down. He appeared in a special celebrity team-up episode of Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? facing off against Mayim Bialik from Blossom, and Tatyana Ali from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air; he and his partner got through to the bonus round in the end (but failed to win the big prize). He can be seen in four movies in 2009: Ditching Party, Never Have I Ever, The Fish and Tar Beach. While promoting Start Fresh Recovery of Santa Ana, California in April 2014, Miller said he started drinking alcohol at age four. Miller states that he suffered from alcohol abuse for years, until he had an implant that released the drug Naltrexone into his system. In 2011, he became a spokesperson for Fresh Start Private Management Inc., the rehabilitation company that administered his treatment. Find out more at https://still-toking-with.pinecast.co

We're getting to the end of June 1993 (finally) and we're talking about two of the final four games. First up, we're talking about Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, a topic we've discussed already back in our Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego episode. How does this port of the classic 80s piece of edutainment hold up to the already-released port of it's older sibling? We'll tell you. And then we discuss Wolfchild by Core Design. This is the second, and final, game from the company so we discuss their history just in case we didn't when we talked about Chuck Rock. We'll be frank, the games in June 93 aren't getting much better. But listen to the episode anyway. SteampunkLink has a little surprise for you if you listen all the way to the end. All this and we didn't even make any jokes about how this is episode 69. Cuz we're classier than that.
Episode 53 begins with true crime. It delves into the sinister poisoning murders of Nurse Jane Toppan. At the turn of the 20th century this trusted figure betrayed that trust in a string of murders on and off Cape Cod. How did it all go down?It is safe to say that Cape Cod and New York City are fairly different. How much of a culture shock was it to visit the Big Apple as a 13-year old on a field trip? Continuing the love letter to the Outer Banks this week's Road Trip takes us to Roanoke Island, North Carolina. It was here that the first English settlement in America was tried and ultimately failed. However what truly became of the Lost Colony of Roanoke? We go way back to what 1980's kids got to play in school as far as early educational computer games. Sure everyone remembers The Oregon Trail and Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego? There were many more classic titles that will be featured on this week's Top 5.There is a new This Week In History and Time Capsule featuring the birth of The Greatest, Muhammad Ali.Be sure to watch for my livestreams called Without A Map Friday's at 8pm on Instagram which serve as a sort of postgame show for the podcast. PBS, otherwise known as Public Broadcasting Service, has undoubtedly influenced the guys at Talk Stupid 2 Me. Ok, perhaps not everyone watched "Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?", but most of us have probably seen "Sesame Street" or "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood." Let us never forget that we may never have truly known the "Joy of Painting" if it weren't for the grace of the kind folks at PBS, and viewers like you.Support the show

We all know Sydnee was a pretty big nerd back in the day (and still now, if we're being honest) but there is maybe no better example of her nerdy nature in her youth than her love for educational video games. None of us are great at geography, but we all still think that Carmen Sandiego game show sounds real fun, don't you?Music: "Baby You Change Your Mind" by Nouvellas

In this episode of The Outspoken Podcast, host Shana Cosgrove talks to Gretchen LeGrand, co-founder and CEO of Code in the Schools (CITS). Gretchen talks about how she co-founded Code in the Schools with her husband, Mike, the programs they offer and how they help prepare their students for future careers in tech. She also talks about how she went from being a psychotherapist to CEO of a computer science non-profit organization. QUOTES “Computers are so integral to the world that we live in now and have changed everything we do. Every industry is affected by computing. And for students to go through 12 years of school without ever having a class that teaches them how a computer works, like how a person can create a program that makes a computer do all of these things that we have it do, how it does all this thinking work for us, that’s crazy to not have that, to not have that understanding.” -Gretchen LeGrand [16:52] “When you don’t have access to a computer science class in school or ever, how are you going to think like ‘I’m not that person. That I’m not a nerd. I’m not a geek that sits behind a computer all day and types out code. I’m a social person’ or ‘I’m whatever, whatever.’ It’s for everybody, right? But you never know that unless you have the opportunity.” -Gretchen LeGrand [24:59] “I think when you think about success, it’s not money or number of houses or cars, it’s about the lives that you’ve impacted.” -Shana Cosgrove [45:57] TIMESTAMPS [00:04] Intro [02:00] Meet Gretchen LeGrand [05:30] Code in the Schools [12:07] The programs they use [14:21] How they choose courses they offer [16:38] Why a computer science education valuable [18:45] Classroom demographics and colleges they work with [22:38] Gretchen’s favorite success story [26:24] The slow burn to start an organization [30:12] How Gretchen met her husband [32:12] Starting Code in the Schools and going full-time [36:58] Raising money [38:01] The future of Code in the Schools [42:59] How CITS works with Girls Who Code and Black Girls Code [44:15] Being a leader and a recognized figure [48:27] Gretchen’s advice to start a non-profit or study computer science [51:13] Gretchen’s childhood dream job [54:32] What she wishes she did differently in her career [55:10] Her favorite book and professional book that has affected her [58:48] What she loves about Baltimore [59:58] How to get involved with CITS and what’s next [01:02:24] Outro RESOURCES https://www.nwbc.gov/ (National Women's Business Council) https://www.sparkypants.com/ (Sparkypants Studios) https://www.digitalharbor.org/ (Digital Harbor Foundation) https://ymaryland.org/ (The Y in Central Maryland) https://sflc.isd15.org/ (St. Francis Learning Center) https://scratch.mit.edu/ (Scratch) https://code.org/ (Code.org) http://wordpress (Python) https://unity.com/ (Unity) https://wordpress.com/ (Wordpress) https://www.java.com/en/ (Java) https://www.cplusplus.com/ (C++) https://www.morgan.edu/computerscience (Morgan State University Department of Computer Science) https://www.csee.umbc.edu/ (University of Maryland, Baltimore County Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering) https://www.ubalt.edu/cas/undergraduate-majors-and-minors/majors/simulation-and-game-design/ (University of Baltimore Simulation and Game Design) https://www.umd.edu/ (University of Maryland, College Park) https://www.captechu.edu/ (Capitol Technology University) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmen_Sandiego (Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?) https://classicreload.com/oregon-trail.html (The Oregon Trail) https://www.thebrewersart.com/ (The Brewer's Art) https://www.zynga.com/ (Zynga) https://girlswhocode.com/ (Girls Who Code) https://www.blackgirlscode.com/ (Black Girls Code) https://www.bizjournals.com/baltimore/c/meet-the-baltimore-business-journals40-under-40/11114/40-under-40-2019-gretchen-legrand-code-in-the-schools.html (Gretchen listed in Business Journal's 40

David Yazbek, the artist behind the music for Broadway's The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Women On the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and this year's Tootsie, jumped on the line to speak with Kyle Meredith about the lyrics and music for 2017's The Band's Visit. Yazbek, who also co-wrote the theme for Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego, speaks about the musical's extremely relevant themes of cultures coming together. He also shares his own family history, growing up in multi-ethnic New York, and how that all came to influence his writing and playing. What's more, Yazbek offers a glimpse into his next project: a musical adaptation of 80's classic The Princess Bride. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy

In Episode 16, Arcade Castle takes a look at another giant in the Edutainment industry: Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? A facts based learning game at heart, WitWiCS has players tracking V.I.L.E. henchmen across the planet and, later, both time and space, as they attempt to stop these henchmen from stealing iconic cultural icons, items, concepts, buildings, geographic locations, and more by gathering clues, answering questions, and following the trail of the V.I.L.E. henchmen until they are captured and placed behind bars. If you are a good enough A.C.M.E. Detective you may find yourself on the trail of Carmen Sandiego herself and finally answer, once and for all, just Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, issue a warrant for her arrest, and place her in jail and stop her crime syndicate for good. Additionally, Arcade Castle takes a look at a series of bookends, or sorts, for the Edutaiment franchise, by looking at the earliest and the most recent entries in the Carmen Sandiego board game adaptations library by playing and examining the Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Board Game from 1992 and the Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Card Game from 2017. Can 25 years make a difference in game design and how a company adapts a video game icon to the tabletop? In Episode 16, Arcade Castle sits down to discuss the Carmen Sandiego franchise, its time and place in Edutainment history, and their ow connections with it as they play these two games to see how you can adapt an Edutainment video game franchise into cardboard and dice and, if after 25 years, whether all our knowledge paid off in the form of a better game in 2017 than in 2018 or if, as they say, history repeats itself... Outline: 00:00 - 35:00 - Arcade Castle talks for length about the Carmen Sandiego franchise; from video games and a game show to the numerous board games and animated series, they discuss Carmen Sandiego's impact not only in the video game industry, but culture at large. Arcade Castle also discusses the fate of Carmen Sandiego since the turn of the new millennium and its status as of 2018. 35:00-50:00 - Arcade Castle sits down and plays the Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego Board Game from 1992 and looks at how University Games interpreted the Edutainment title, how to play it, what strategies you can bring to the table when playing it, and how well it captures the franchise. 50:00-75:00 - After a quick break, Arcade Castle plays the latest entry in the series via the Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Card Game from 2017 by Pressman Games. By playing it and comparing it to the board game from 1992, it is Arcade Castle's hopes that they will see a difference in not only board game design, but how designers approach a video game franchise in 2017 and whether or not it is different than that of designers in the late 80s and early 90s. In this episode, I speak with composers Sean Altman & David Yazbek on their careers and creating the theme for Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego. Sean also talks about forming the a capella group Rockapella and how he and David helped shape the sound of modern a capella. David briefly discusses the process of writing music for broadway. He won best score at the 2018 Tony Awards for The Band’s Visit.
Take them...to the map(quest)!!
Do it Rockapella! Carmen Sandiego was one of those educational gameshows for kids that ran on PBS from 1991 to 1995 in response to a study that found out that Americans in the early 90s were a big bunch of dummies and couldn't locate the Pacific Ocean! Duh. Three kids would compete against one another as gumshoes, new to the ACME detective agency and tracking down a crook (working for the notorious crime boss Carmen Sandiego) who stole a famous world artifact or building, etc by answering questions about world geography correctly. These kids were so smart! There were three rounds - sort of basic question answer round, a memory like game and then the grand finale - a giant map of a continent and you have to run around the map putting light sensors on various countries in 45 seconds. Hard as hell! So turns out these kids were really smart, they gave dorky but cool prizes (woohoo an atlas! woohoo a recording pen!), and the woman who played the Chief is a badass and best part of the show! So check out some episodes on YouTube and joining for a rollicking discussion on the finer parts of this zany show + some really bad Sweetie acapella.
Bang! Pow! Boom! by Insane Clown Posse. Nathan's getting punchy this week, because he didn't really enjoy ICP's many versions of their 2009 album Bang! Pow! Boom!. It's not that it's bad, it's just… the shine is wearing off a little bit. ICP's been releasing these albums over almost 20 years, but we've been mainlining them for three months. Is Nathan finally starting to crack? Cameron didn't mind Bang! Pow! Boom! so much, though. Maybe it's better than Nathan gives it credit for, and there's at least one really good song. Plus, it inspired a brilliant SNL parody video, so we can credit it with that. Listen along to Bang! Pow! Boom! here—or here—or… here. Depending on which Pokéman you prefer, that is. Learnin' Links The music for "In Yo Face" Beyond the Box Set's episode about Amelie, which Nathan guested on Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego The friggin' mode The different names for people who are called "gypsies," who may be better referred to as "Romani" "Annabel Lee" by Edgar Allen Poe The Philly accent An illicit link to the SNL parody for the song "Miracles" DickDale.com, which Nathan didn't mention still looks like it did in 2004 (and presumably 1994 too) The Central Park Five, who Donald Trump decided should be executed, despite their innocence You can support us in several ways: Kick us a few bux on Patreon! Jamie Greenberg discusses his new film, ‘Future ’38,’ along with his television work as a writer on the children’s series, ‘Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?’ In this interview, the writer-director talks about writing a film with a low budget, knowing how to set rules for yourself in a genre, determining whether or not you’re willing to spend years on a project, and the difference between films like ‘Quiz Show’ and ’Cool Runnings’ for historical fiction.
This one went up late and I apologize! It is worth it though, because it will also be on youtube as a video episode in the short future! My amazing friend Sam Han is a whizz with video production and we are working together to bring more content like this! Your patience is appreciated! In this episode I delve into the show, "Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego" and how it got kids thinking about geography and travel. It was and is an excellent kids show! Here is one where the entire Edmonton Oilers hockey team gets stolen! Yikes!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRXGyZro3Qw And here is a link to play the game: https://archive.org/details/msdos_Where_in_the_World_is_Carmen_Sandiego_Deluxe_1990
Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? It's not fun, and it's incredibly stressful. Welcome to this game. It's BRIAN BREAKER vs. Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego!

Join Scott and his very special guest, Gregg Gethard, as they discuss Gregg's amazing experience being a contestant on the geography-based PBS game show "Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?"! Listen as Gregg talks all about this surreal event from his childhood, including almost seeing someone get injured on the way to the show, how badly he wanted to beat his competition, his frequent microphone issues, how he got caught cheating, the story behind his terrible knock-knock joke, meeting award-winning actress Lynne Thigpen, the reason why he knew the exact location of Burkina Faso, and what ended up happening to his prizes. He'll also talk about how he handles the internet comments, some of his hilariously infamous standup sets, and most importantly, how this one day he spent on a game show set as a kid ended up being one of the defining moments of his life. Do it Rockapella!
