Go back to the movies with us! We're still profiling LA's repertory theaters in Revival House cause there are SO MANY to check out! In this episode, we explore a cool space with some deep, messy history. Fashion label Brain Dead has taken over a site that some would consider....a little cursed. Originally opened in the 1940s as The Silent Movie Theater on Fairfax, the venue was home to premieres and parties. Until a theft and murder shut the theater down. In the 2000s, it was taken over by Cinefamily, which programmed in that space until allegations of abuse came to light in 2017. But today, Brain Dead Studios is keeping the lights on for nerds, artists, and skate punks in Los Angeles -- aiming to create an eclectic community space to inspire creatives and show good movies. Take a listen as we explain the history and present of this theater. Guests: Professor and historian Ross Melnick, Brain Dead founder Kyle Ng

MONSTER PARTY GETS WORDY! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, revisit a topic that provides our listeners with a unique glimpse into their minds. Cthulhu help us! It's a psycho psyche-slicing celebration called... THE MONSTER PARTY WORD ASSOCIATION GAME VOL. 2!!! Again, this game is exactly what you think. We each take turns saying a word, and the others must respond with the first genre-related thing that pops into their minds. This game is a tried and true technique utilized by therapists throughout the ages. So what could be more fun than listening to a bunch of nerds who frivolously misuse it? This game was first introduced in a PATREON EXCLUSIVE segment, but was such a hit that we had to do it as a regular episode! Then that episode was such a giant hit that we felt we had to do another one! But this one needed something extra! Some OOMPH! And that OOMPH came in the form of a guest! Helping to navigate the dark waters of our minds is a returning guest, and friend of the show. She's a brilliant comedian, podcaster, film expert, 70mm film tech, and projectionist to the stars! Please welcome back, the incomparable... GARIANA ABEYTA! (THE POPCORN MAFIA, THE CINEFAMILY, THE TELLURIDE FILM FESTIVAL, OPPENHEIMER) FEEL FREE TO PLAY THE MONSTER PARTY WORD ASSOCIATION GAME AT HOME! BUT IF SOMEONE HAPPENS TO BRING UP BONE TOMAHAWK... JUST WALK AWAY.

In this special rush release episode of The Carousel, I'm joined by legendary movie impresario Hadrian Belove. Some refer to Hadrian as “the original cancelled man” due to his absurd banishment from CineFamily—the notorious, celebrity-studded LA film enjoyment club—at the cusp of MeToo. Wrong place, wrong time. But we're not here to talk about the past. Hadrian was in part responsible for planning this year's Urbit Assembly in Lisbon, which wrapped last week. In doing so, he brought in KIRAC (Keeping It Real Art Critics) to intermingle with the digital sovereignty nerds that populate the Urbit ecosystem. KIRAC is a troupe of Dutch YouTube tricksters (although they hate being called that) that mock and interrogate the intelligentsia with brutal honesty, or, more accurately, honest brutality. They're infamous for persuading Michel Houellebecq to appear in a porn. In response, the world's greatest writer flipped out, filing a lawsuit blocking release, and writing a whole book about it.KIRAC is at its best when it's doing art world subversion. You really fall in love with them when you watch “Stigma,” where Kate Sinha, wife of main-guy Stefan Ruitenbeek, calls an awful diversity artist a “spoiled b***h,” and we get to witness the subsequent struggle session in front of the Dutch art establishment. However, like Borat and Sam Hyde before them, KIRAC reaches uncomfortable levels of trollishness. See e.g. “Honeypot,” in which they get one of their groupies to have sex with a right wing philosopher—or at least that's the set up before she rejects him for being “an oaf.”So how did KIRAC handle Urbit Assembly? Since the video isn't out yet, we don't know. All we do know is that Stefan Ruitenbeek purportedly got meningitis and the remaining underlings spread false rumors about a “ketamine orgy” involving certain high ranking members of the dissident fringe. The groupies also poured milk over themselves after a screening in which one of them broke up with her boyfriend on camera. What does any of this mean? Listen above or watch below. John Wyatt, the founder of Cinespia, joins host Jessica Kantor for this week's episode of Raising Cinephiles.Founded by entrepreneur John Wyatt in 2002, Cinespia has built an avid online following of well over 250,000 fans through its eighteen-year history. The organization also hosts screenings, concerts, and film premieres at classic movie palaces in downtown Los Angeles.Wyatt attributes the success of Cinespia to his belief that “there's a need in L.A. for people to get together and watch films with each other. That's how these films were meant to be seen: on the big screen with a large audience, emoting, screaming, and laughing. The picnics, the DJs, the community experience, these things transform the movie-going experience.”Over the years, Cinespia has also become a popular attraction for Hollywood directors, producers, and actors. In 2014, Cinespia produced the annual Cinefamily fundraiser with Team Downey, showcasing the films of Robert Downey, Sr., with a benefit hosted by Louis CK at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Cinespia's stellar array of guest appearances to present the films being shown also include Drew Barrymore, Patricia Arquette, Lena Waithe, director Cameron Crowe, Paul Reubens, and Questlove.Past notable events include the FYC screening event for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the premiere of Wonderstruck, and activations for Academy Award-nominated films such as Suspiria and Beautiful Boy.Films discussed:King KongWinnie The PooClash of the TitansRaiders of the Lost ArkThe 400 BlowsBlade RunnerStar WarsTampopoManhunterLa Bande Du DrugstoreElviraThe ShinningGooniesBreakfast at Tiffany'sThe Wizard of OzThe Lego MovieSpongeBob SquarepantsMr Show New Episodes Every Wednesday!EPISODE CREDITS:Host, Producer, Editor: Jessica KantorBooker: Noelia MurphyBe sure to follow and tag Raising Cinephiles on Instagram

Hey all,What you’re about to hear is the first half of a much longer conversation on the four essential beats of narrative and how storytellers have used them both now and in the past to compel, inspire, repulse or attract. As you listen, I invite you to think of your favorite stories—fiction or not—and why they’ve had such an impact. Then consider the most powerful moments you’re reminded of, and how you were moved from the first beat to the last.Oh and this was recorded during my recovery from cervical spine surgery. This episode of the podcast is Guy and Tim's Question and Answer session at Cinefamily, LA that was conducted immediately before the final watch of Grown Ups 2. A packed out audience of about 150 fans had their opportunity to ask what needed to be asked. Where's the knife? Where's Tanya? Where are the tattoos? All will be revealed. As best as Tim can hear them, here are the questions which were off-mic from the crowd:1) How are you enjoying Los Angeles?2) Are you guys as excited about Grown Ups 2 as we are?3) What do you do in New Zealand, when you're not watching the movie?4) Guy went to Europe for a month. I was wondering if Tim could give a Mystery Tour as to why.5) Why did you do this?6) Given the way you feel about the movie, what do you want us to take away from this viewing?7) When this is over, what's next?8) You've seen this movie a lot of ways at this point, but never with this many people or in a cinema so how do you feel about that?9) Was there any reason why Guy kept falling asleep?10) When you guys encounter this movie in the wild, like a friend's house or on TV, what's your gut reaction?11) Do you feel any guilt for the amount of people that are now watching Grown Ups 2? As the Fantastic Fest company parts ways with Harry Knowles, female accusers come forward to say their warnings fell on deaf ears for years. Troubling allegations continue to surface regarding Alamo Drafthouse, the Austin, Texas-based movie empire currently embroiled in a sex assault and sexual harassment scandal involving several employees and business partners. On Saturday, IndieWire first reported on Jasmine Baker, a former Drafthouse employee who says Ain't It Cool News founder Harry Knowles — who co-founded Fantastic Fest with Drafthouse's married owners Tim and Karrie League in 2005 — "groped" her "opportunistically on more than one occasion" in 2000. That news comes on the heels of a scandal involving Devin Faraci, a Drafthouse-employed film writer who stepped down in October 2016 after being accused of sexual assault, whom League then quietly rehired to pen promotional material for this year's Fantastic Fest. It also comes less than a month after Los Angeles' own nexus of movie nerddom, Cinefamily, ceased operations amid its own sexual harassment scandal. Since that report, multiple women have come forward to allege that Knowles has subjected them to various forms of sexual harassment and assault over the years. Several, including Baker, say they informed the Leagues about Knowles' actions and were consistently greeted with words of concern but ultimately inaction. Knowles, for his part, had denied any wrongdoing. On Monday, League announced that Knowles, 45, is "no longer affiliated with the company in any capacity." The CEO went on to say that he had skipped Fantastic Fest this year, currently underway in Austin, to instead go on a "listening tour" of the 22 Alamo Drafthouse locations around the country. (Some, like the Austin, San Francisco and Brooklyn locations, are owned by League; others are franchises.) One day after IndieWire's report, a Drafthouse customer named Gloria Walker accused Knowles on Twitter of having "on more than one occasion grabbed my ass and other parts of me." Walker cited another incident in which she tried to enter the cinema to watch Captain America; Knowles allegedly stood in the doorway and told her "I had to kiss him to get in." The Daily Beast, meanwhile, on Tuesday published screenshots of a text conversation between Knowles and an anonymous film blogger, in which he allegedly told her, "Come hither to Austin. Your eyeliner makes you look good enough to eat. Obviously I'm talking about cannibalism, baby. You have can have my Vienna sausage anytime." Andy Signore, creator of Screen Junkies and the “Honest Trailers” series, has been fired effective immediately, Defy Media announced Sunday evening. Signore has been accused by several women of sexual harassment, and at least one said he tried to sexually assault her

Sammy Harkham: Everything Together (PictureBox) Comics artist and Kramers Ergot editor Sammy Harkham will discuss and sign the brand new anthology of his short story work, Everything Together. Sammy Harkham is regarded as one of the most influential cartoonist/editors of his generation. After a decade of work and groundbreaking anthologies, Everything Together collects his short stories. These comics condense vast amounts of emotion and information into nuanced cartoon narratives. Harkham's classic style is both articulate and expedient. At the center of the book are two vastly different tales: Poor Sailor, a sea-faring myth of a man gone to find wealth for his love; and Somersaulting, a kind of fever dream of teenagers in love, wiling away the summer. Around these stories shorter comic strips tackling everything from Napoleon (if he was a tortured artist) to touching examinations of Jewish mysticism and life in a shtetl, to satires of contemporary University life. Through all these works, Harkham maintains a light touch and emotive wit. The works in this book confirm his place among the best storytellers of his generation. Sammy Harkham was born in Los Angeles in 1980, moving to Sydney, Australia, at the age of 14. He soon started making his own comics and a zine, Kramers Ergot, which has evolved into one of the most influential comics anthologies published today. His comic strip Poor Sailor, originally published in Kramers Ergot 4, was subsequently included in Best American Nonrequired Reading of 2004 and has been published in French, Korean and Italian. Kramers Ergot has been on numerous “best of the year” lists including the LA Weekly, Time, The New York Times, Dazed and Confused, The Comics Journal and Publishers Weekly. In 2006 Harkham started the ongoing comic series, Crickets, and edited The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror, and most recently the eighth volume of Kramers Ergot. A partner in both the renowned bookstore Family, and the movie theater, Cinefamily, Harkham lives in Los Angeles with his wife and three children. THIS EVENT WAS RECORDED LIVE AT SKYLIGHT BOOKS OCTOBER 11, 2012. Copies of the book can be purchased here: http://tinyurl.com/acdrgv6
